Swollen battery on macbook pro 17"

swollen battery on macbook pro 17", laptop running hot, can I remove the battery and still use my computer with ac adapter? Also, what is normal temp for laptop?

Yes, you can remove the battery, but if we're talking about a unibody system, you'll need to take it somewhere to have it removed. The batteries are locked in by a rather unique screw. That's because the under side of the battery is soft and can be easily punctured.
But you can have it removed and keep on using it. It will obviously shut off immediately if power is lost, but otherwise there's no issue. And a normal temp is that the system should only feel slightly warm to the touch.

  • Swollen Battery for MacBook Pro 15"2008

My battery swelled about 1 inch from it's original size. Could I get it replaced if the warranty expired? I was reading about several batteries that have been recalled, are they related incidences?

Yes, you probably can — but only Apple can tell you for certain. Make a Genius Bar appointment to have it looked at.

  • After a year of no use and a fully discharged battery, my MacBook Pro refuses to accept the administrator name and the password. How can I reset these?

After a year of no use and a resulting fully discharged battery, the MacBook Pro refuses to recognize the administrator name and password (both). It has system OS X 10.6 which can not be upgraded without the information. How can I reset or reistall the administrator name and password?

Thanks to all who responded. You are all absolutely correct. However, this Ipad was a gift to my wife who was dying of cancer in the hospital and wanted some entertainment. So I started it out with her Apple ID. After she passed away I moved from Sacramento to Austin and eventually proceeded to get the Apple ID changed from my wife's to mine. Meanwhile when she was in the hospital I opened an Itunes account in my name to buy movies for her. That was the first mistake.
Then during the move to Austin I lost track of the IPAD and later found it and tried to use support but could not remember the proper ID. Later the folks at the Apple store helped me create a new and novel Apple ID that was unfortunately unlike any other.
The botom line is that I am stuck with three Apple IDs and three passwords. I am told by Apple there is nothing they can do about this as IDs cannot be changed or destroyed. I can quit using them or start a new account but when I try to do that the system keeps remembering too many things from the past and resists.
Even if I sold this Ipad and bought a new one, the system memory is still there.
I think the real problem is that destop and laptop computers are totally owned by an individual and that individual can control logins and passwords to his liking. IPADs and similar Apple products are different in that the corporation has built in their own intrusion detection schemes because of the relation to Itunes.
One thing I thought about is to open a new Itunes account pretendding to be a new customer with my regular Apple ID. Perhaps I could do the same with Apple Support.
    Thanks for your comments.

  • HT3053 How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

You can leave it plugged in all the time if you wish.
Once your Macbook is fully charged, it stops charging.
You can see this if you click on your apple logo, about this mac, more info, system report, power.
In any event, it is also a good idea to use your Macbook under it's own power to keep the battery in optimal condition.
As much as possible, try not to fully discharge your battery.  It could do more harm than good to your Macbook.
Good luck and enjoy your macbook

Hi, i want to upgrade my Ram, Hard Disk and Battery of Macbook pro 2010 Model with i7 processor and 15" display.
    My current configuration:
Ram: 2GB + 2GB (original with mbp purchase)
Hard Disk: 500 GB (250 GB full)
Battery: Cycles - 669 and Health - 87 % (As show by istat)
    New configuration I want:
Ram: 8 Gb best of all (what to do with the previous 2GB + 2GB Ram)
SSD:Minimum 128 Gb ( what to do with previous 500 GB

I ignored the (with price) part. Sorry.
    Crucial m4 512GB SSD - from Amazon - $389.99.
    Crucial m4 256GB SSD - from Amazon - $203.84.
    Crucial m4 128GB SSD - from Amazon - $112.87.
    Crucial 8GB RAM for 2010 15" MacBook Pro - from Crucial - $47.99.
What to do with your old RAM? Just trash it or label it and put it in an anti-static bag and put it in your 'parts' drawer. Or trash it. Or give it away. It's not worth anything.
    Good luck,

  • Problem with battery for MacBook Pro 2007

I have a problem with battery that was replaced during video card service 1.5 years ago
Battery health was around 80% and it stopped to work, I continued to use notebook with power cable and after week the battery become like this!
spoke with person in Apple store and got answer that it is not covered by Apple and I will need to buy another new battery.
For me it looks like manufacturing problem and I'm not expecting that after 1 year my battery will die like this! Thanks that it didn't explode!
What I should do in such case?

    Thanks for your reply!
All my battery story is ending with bad taste...
I always relied on quality of the Apple products, it brought me to change all computers and phones to Apple brand. I was ready to pay extra for their products...
This battery has an Apple brand on it and I'm expecting that Apple will take some responsibility for it.
First battery on my MacBook Pro 2007 worked without any problem for 4 years, then it was replaced by Apple service tech person for unknown reason. This "new" battery failed just after ending of 1 year warranty coverage and even deformed in such scarry way. And now I don't have any option to ask if there is possibility that I'm experience a manufacturing defect! And I know that it is possible, internet is full of negative comments for these batteries!
Now I'm asking myself again, if it worst to buy Apple products? Are these products have proper quality?

Whether the battery is OK after 2 year of Non Use is anyones guess. More then likely yes but really Who Knows unit it is taken out of the box and turned on.

  • HT3371 how to replace internal battery in Macbook Pro 17"

My 17" went dead while sitting in a warehouse waiting for a residence. Grrr.

You can only replace the battery yourself on a 2008 or older MacBook Pro. If you do it in a newer computer, you will void the warranty.
If you have a 2008 or older computer, buy the battery at the Apple Online Store > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA348LL/A/rechargeable-battery-15-inch-macbook -pro?fnode=5a Then, install it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3053
If you have a newer computer, you have to look in iFixit for the steps to replace your battery > http://www.ifixit.com

  • How Necessary is PRAM battery on MacBook Pro (c2d intel 2.13, model a1211)

Hello Everyone, I stupidly broke the socket/clip where the pram battery attaches to the logic board on my Macbook Pro (c2d Intel 2.13). Unfortunately, since the socket/clip is a surface mount component and the way it broke (I don't see solder pads) I'm unable to re-solder the clip back on to the motherboard. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about (borrowed from someone else who apparently did the same thing): http://yfrog.com/6ximg0870nj
My first question is if anyone knows how vital the pram battery is to a Intel Macbook? It seems that the laptop works fine without the pram battery. Is the battery only necessary to retain pram settings if the main laptop battery is removed and the power adapter disconnected?
Second question is whether there is any alternative to repair the logic board other than get an entirely new board? The laptop is recently out of warranty (Applecare expired earlier this year) and I don't believe that Apple would have covered this since I caused the damage myself.
Third question(s) is whether it would cause any problems to use the logic board out of a c2d 2.33 a1211 macbook pro (I can get my hands on one for a pretty reasonable price)? The only difference I can see between the two boards is the clock speed of the main processor and the amount of video ram. Would there be any advantage to using this logic board? Doesn't seem like the speed bump and video ram would do to much.
Thanks in advance for any comments/help you can offer.

Much obliged. So it sounds like the only time this will be an issue is if I disconnect the regular battery and the power supply at the same time. The rational thing to do here is to just live with it rather than blowing hundreds on the new logic board and risking additional damage during replacement.
I just wish I wasn't so OCD about this. Bothers me a bit to know that something is wrong with the laptop even if it doesn't manifest itself on a day to day basis.

  • HT1446 Battery in Macbook Pro Retina

I have a new, barely used Macbook Pro retina.  Although I have barely used it the battery is now very low and although I have plugged it into the mains to recharge it, it will not start up and just shows the battery charging symbol.  Is this correct, or should I be able to use it whilst recharging.

You actually explained your problem well - it's just something that I've never seen nor heard of!
You can try both a SMC and a NVRAM reset -> Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and About NVRAM and PRAM.
Although I'm not sure that will do anything - give it a try and call back.

  • Using ac power adapter vs. battery on MacBook Pro

I purchased a 15 inch MacBook Pro with retina display a couple months ago.  Most of the time I use it with the ac power adapter.  Is there any harm to the battery life if I never left the battery drain down some and then recharge it? I have come to understand that when the battery is fully charged and plugged in to an outlet the battery is basically on standby.
    Thanks

If you use it mostly on AC, then once every one or two months you should use it on the battery until the battery runs down to about 20%. Then reconnect the AC so the battery can recharge.

  • A1321 battery for MacBook Pro Mid 2009

So the title says it all. I have a mid 2009 15" MacBook Pro and have already purchased one faulty battery from a less than reputable site. It's just impossible to find the battery for this critter.
Has anyone purchased an after market battery and had good luck with it? If so what company?
I wish Apple still made batteries for this model of machine. It has a lot of life left in it.
    The battery is a 'A1321'.
    Cheers

Thanks for all your inputs. I finally gave up searching on the web for a new generic or genuine battery a month back. While I hate paying apple prices (considering how much I have spent on apple products for the last 30 years) I finally figured this bloody mac book pro 15 has paid for it's self 1000 times over, and I didn't want to blow it up by being to much of a cheap ***. It has eaten 9 solid months of my life over the last 3 years, but allowed me knowledge untold and access in a way that is understandable to me. I paid $180 to have some quack 'authorised repairman' spend 5 minutes popping one in from apple that probably cost $17 in China to make. (I could have installed it blindfolded). I gave it a new color case and magnetic charger as well, and came to realise it had actually well earned that $300 to bring it back to life. Maybe mac machines do have a 'soul' of their own. Funny ol' world eh?

  • Installed New Battery in MacBook Pro--Computer Freezes Twice

Since my MacBook Pro was way past it's warranty, I decided to replace it's depleted battery myself. It wasn't rocket science and it was much cheaper than taking it into Apple and having them fix it for me as I had done so twice in the past (when I was covered under warranty). After I went through the process of removing the depleted battery and replacing it with the new one I got, I ran simple specs on my computer and the battery. The battery is certified new (arrived to me half charged on its first cycle) and matches my MackBook Pro's requirement model and my all of my computer's hardware is functioning as it should. However, since the installation of the new battery, my Mac has froze twice for no apparent reason. The first time it froze was while I was working online (Chrome) with no other applications open. The second time it froze I was running a video via my Mac's storage (file did not exceed 600MB) and nothing else. When it froze the second time, I turned off my Mac and ran the comprehensive hardware check and came up with nothing. I also checked the battery's physical appearance and there's no swelling, leaking, damages to the casing or to the connective wires that run from the battery. So my question is: Could the freezing be due to an undamaged battery that might be a low quality battery, or some other issue?
***My MacBook Pro hasn't had a freezing episode in over a year and it is always kept cool.

    **Update**
I had another freeze episode just now from picking up my computer...perhaps something is loose internally. Will be re-checking everything and posting results.

  • New battery in Macbook Pro - louder fan.

    Hardware Overview:
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro 8.1 (2011)
    Processor Name: Intel Core i5
    Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz
    Memory: 4 GB
I had a dead battery in my MacBook Pro replaced two days ago and since using my Mac with the replacement, whether on charge or not, the fans are a lot louder when watching videos or playing games than with the old battery/when the battery was dead.
Is it due to the new battery, the installation or do I need to reset something that I've missed? Thanks.

Have you tried reset the System Management Controller (SMC)?
