SX 280 - The Life and Times of the Lowly Battery

I know there is another thread about the battery issues on this camera.  I have even posted there, but that thread is long and Canon seems to have forgetten about its issues with the battery.  So, here is a new thread that will hopefully get Canon's attention.  I do think they decided that the issue is closed after the latest firmware "fix," but it still is a problem.  So, ...
Canon, please convince me to keep the SX 280.  Please tell me that the latest firmware change to 1.0.2 was only one step in the process of resolving the poor battery life and hasty shutdown during the recording modes.
Do you monitor battery levels differently in picture mode and recording mode?  It sure seems like it. You definitely display different levels.  Is the level displayed in each mode an anticipated level and not a true level of power remaining?  If this isn't the case, then I do not understand why the levels are very different in the picture-taking and video-recording modes.  If the battery level starts flashing red (low battery warning) in the video mode, it should be flashing red in picture mode.  Instead, we see the battery level display fully charged or partially charged when switching to the picture mode from the flashing red of the video mode.
Zooming puts a drain on the battery.  No argument here.  But, I think that what the camera is doing is monitoring the battery level during a zoom and if it sees the battery level drop below some line, it triggers the red-flashing or shuts off the camera.  I think that the camera should allow the zoom to complete, THEN check the battery level. It might not be that low.  Of course this only seems to be an issue during recordin mode.
The battery gets quite warm, almost hot.  I wonder if battery life "improves" when used in cooler temperatures.
I am not sure if I am going to keep the camera.  I am hoping that Canon opens it eyes and ears and uses its intelligence to really determine the cause of the battery problem and FIX IT.  For now, Costco's excellent return policy will allow me to test this camera a bit longer.  My tests actually show a respectable amount of battery life, but there is still a problem in the video recording mode.  I am not much into video recording, but if I have it, I expect it to work.  It would really be nice to know how much battery power is remaining when doing anything on this camera.  I just want ONE BATTERY LEVEL that is displayed the same while in any camera mode.

I hope the above article will help you guys..

  • Important!! Improve the life and performance of the battery.

Reduce the operating temperature and increase battery life
The battery in your notebook PC is designed to provide the necessary amount of energy for the processor while maintaining HP high safety standards. As a result, the battery may not charge or may stop providing power to the notebook when the battery temperature exceeds the specified, design safety level.
If the battery life appears shorter than normal, the battery stops charging before it is 99%-100% full and the battery appears warmer than usual, the battery has most likely reached its designed "no charge" safety state. The battery will no longer charge until the temperature condition is corrected.
Try one of the following methods to correct the battery temperature:
When charging the battery, do not use applications that require large amounts of system resources such as graphic or memory intensive applications, heavy and extended hard drive usage.
Turn off your notebook and remove the battery to allow it to return to a safe operating temperature.
Make sure the notebook PC is operating on a hard surface. Using the Notebook PC on a bed or sofa may block the vents causing the notebook PC to heat up and shut down.
By taking these steps, the battery will return to its normal operating temperature range and continue to charge and discharge as designed.
Calibrating the battery while PC not in use
Recalibrating the battery requires a cycle of a complete charge and a complete discharge. To recalibrate the battery while using the PC is not is use complete the following steps.
The recalibration may take 1-5 hours depending on the age of the battery and the configuration of the notebook PC you own. The PC should not be used while you perform the following steps. Completing all the following steps will also calibrate the battery so that the power meter readings are accurate.
    Shut down the notebook PC
Connect the AC Adapter to the notebook PC and to an electrical socket.
Charge the Notebook PC until the Battery Charge light is Green. This indicates the battery is completely charged.
Press and release the Power Button to start the computer.
Press the F8 key several times when the HP Logo displays.
When the Windows Advanced Startup Menu displays, select the Startup in Safe Mode option.
Remove the AC power adapter from the notebook PC.
Allow the battery to discharge completely until the notebook PC turns off.
The battery is now calibrated and the battery level reading on the power meter is now accurate.
If you are not using the notebook regularly then please unplug the AC adapter and shut down the notebook. By following these practices will improve the life and performance of the battery. Here is a quick list of Do's and Don'ts for the care of your Li-On batteries:
    Do's
When you receive a new Notebook or Tablet PC, leave the battery to fully charge overnight.
Condition a new battery by using it until it is fully discharged, and then re-charge it fully. Doing this once a month will help to accurately calibrate your battery.
Always ensure the battery is recharged as soon as possible after it becomes fully discharged. A battery will be permanently damaged if left for an extended length of time in a fully discharged state.
Remember that a Lithium-Ion battery will slowly deteriorate; a new battery will always perform better than one that is 6-months old.
Remember that the battery half-life is rated for a certain total number of charge/discharge cycles (see your User Manual or Quick Start Guide for the rating). For example, a battery that is rated for 3 hours and 500 charge/discharge cycles, will still be considered as within specification, even if it only lasts for 1 hour 45 minutes after 500 charge/discharge cycles.
Heat is the worst enemy of a battery. Allow plenty of air to circulate around the Notebook/Tablet PC, so that the battery is kept as cool as possible when charging and also when in use. If provided, use the integrated 'legs' under the Notebook to raise the notebook and improve air circulation.
Remove the battery if storing for several months (the battery should be at approximately 50% charge or higher).
If you use a NoteBus or if charging your Notebooks or Tablet PCs in a confined space, allow for adequate ventilation in order to keep the batteries as cool as possible.
    Don'ts
Do Not - Expose the battery to excessive heat or cold (i.e. outside the range of 10-35 degrees Centigrade ambient).
Do Not - Store the battery in a fully charged state (store batteries with about 50% charge).
Do Not - Allow a nearly flat battery to be unused for more than a month or so. The battery will slowly discharge until it becomes fully discharged and this will permanently damage the battery cells.
Do Not - Charge your Notebook/Tablet PC inside a carry case - the battery may overheat.
Do Not - Charge your Notebook/Tablet PC when stacked on top of each other - the battery may overheat.
Remember: Your battery is slowly degrading all the time, even if it is not used. Keeping your battery as cool as possible will slow down this degradation considerably.

If start date and end date filled then actual time taken field should automatically should fill, for example 2 days 12 hours 48 min 3 sec.
    How to achieve this?

    Hi Sam,

My iPhone with 40 or so percent randomly shuts down with iOS 7 and 6. Often with the camera app stating the phone is out of battery.  Moments later I turn it back on and the same battery life still appears.  It sometimes happens over and over until I leave it alone for a while (still not charging), and then it works.

I think you might get a new phone instead of repairing it as it takes time and you said the repairing center is far from your living place

  • Help... Bug in the Date and Time ?!

Hello... I have BB Z10 that I bought it a year ago, and very satisfied for my decision to change my Torch into Z10 so far. Recently I have upgrade its OS to the latest one, and I'm quite happy to see myany improvement in it. But after a while, i just realize something strange with my Z10, which I don't know is it really a bug or not? I'm just a loyal user of BB and have no capability in Dev sectors.
    The problem is :
Everytime I shutdown my BlackBerry, It's clock always change. why it happens? is it really abug?
First of all, in Date and Time setting, I set my Z10 timezone to my home time zone. And I *set off* the Auto Update Time Zone since i have to work many times to places with different time zone of my home city... and I still want my Z10 to show my Home City Time Zone rather to the place where I stayed for temporary.
Secondly, sometimes I must Shutdown my Z10, according the rules where I worked. So It's no option at all for setting it to Airplane mode.
Thirdly, sometimes I always shut my Mobile Service, and change it to Wifi Connection where available. I do it so I can spare my battery life, since in my workplace, sometimes there's no electricity at all, and many times i forgot to bring my charge when i go to town with electricity.
So... again, everytime i turn on my Z10, the date is always change... and i couldn't recall, is it the time before i'm upgrading my latest OS.
So, if this is a bug, i hope RIM dev can fix this in the next OS Update. Some other my phone (sucha as Nokia, Samsung, Android, and even my Company Satphone) doesn't have this problem.
If this is not a bug, what can I do so my Date and Time is not change?
FYI, as I said before, I CAN NOT set on Auto Update Time Zone, since I LIKE my Z10 to stay in my home zone so it's easier for me to see what time in my home. I've already have to set Date and Time Automatically Bar to *On Position* 9even I don't know for sure what is used for), but when I restarted why Z10, the Date and Time was changing again. Meanfile my Time Zone still the same, to my Home Time Zone. So what exatcly the Set Date and Time Automatically option really use for? My Date and Time still always changing everytime I "turn it on" or "restart" my Z10, regardless that automatic option set on or off.
Any idea? Thanks for the help
I sent it from my BBzTen.

If you back everything up, you can restore everything after the wipe. You will not lose data. After restoring all you have to do is enter your password for your accounts.
However, if you do that it's possible, not for sure, but it's possible you will restore the problem. If you restore only media and application data you will have to re-add your accounts, reset all your notifications etc. Any apps you had will have to be redownloaded from BBWorld but it's quite quick and easy to do. The wipe will leave the OS in tact so you won't have to do anything with that.

I just replaced my battery yesterday, but I am still getting the same battery life of about 2.5 hours. When I first got the laptop, I was getting atleast 6-7 hours.
Can anyone tell what is wrong? The stats are from the newly replaced battery

    Hi katsoccer92,
The first thing I suggest you do is read neuroanatomist's excellent battery FAQ at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1764220
New batteries can take a few cycles to work up to maximum capacity (and your figures indicate that the batteries maximum capacity is a little lower than you would expect, so maybe it still has some room for improvement).
In a situation like yours it is important to calibrate the battery when you first get it - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490 I also often recalibrate again after the first week when the battery has settled down a bit, and then every couple of months thereafter. If your battery's full charge capacity isn't up around 4500mAh after a week then it may have been old stock or otherwise defective.
But usage patterns have a huge impact on charge life.
If , for example, you are watching a lot more "flash" based videos on line these days then you can expect a dramatic fall in computer run time. "Flash" plugins chew up a heap of CPU time, and accordingly can flatten your battery faster than a politician can break a promise!
Bluetooth is another real battery muncher, and so, of course, is anything like an external drive or other device powered by the computers USB or firewire ports (Elgato EyeTVs , unpowered hubs, bus powered scanners, etc etc). The internal iSight camera is a real power chomper too.
    Cheers

  • How can I get rid of the dates and time on my Notes

How do I get rid of the dates and times on my Notes that appeared when I updated to 8?

Yes, it's seems like a poor design decision.
By putting the date on the line below the Note title in the Notes Index, the app shows half the number of notes per page AND if you have a large number of notes, it takes twice as long to stroll down.
I doubt the designer actually uses the app.

You should be able to use the battery if you get a car type charger which recharges mobile devices.
The full size iPads use a 10-12W charger, whereas the mini uses a 5W charger. Many car chargers only supply 5W. But at 5W, the car charger should give you some extra time on your iPad. It would be best to use a 10-12W car charger.
     Cheers, Tom

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

The missing apps could have been done by setting the Restrictions that can hid those apps. If the backup was made with those retrictions set the the Restrictions are also restored.
Thus, if you get it to work restore to factory settings/new iPod, not from backup

  • My firefox will allow me to open a page then it gets stuck on the second page and times out--how do I fix this. I have checked the sites on Explorer -it works

It started with the second page not being able to be displayed
example it would go to yahoo and I would sign in but the next page would just spin and time out
Now it won't even go to the first page.
Firefox will not let me go into the options to change cache.
I am trying explorer and it works.
    Help

This is a page within the Yahoo site? When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In that dialog, you can individually remove your yahoo.com cookies.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

  • How can I display the date and time from the playhead info as a subtitle ?

Is there any way it is possible to display the video capture data and time during playback. I have seen some discussion on creating subtitles to do this, it would be nice if one could simply add a Title template with display fields for playhead information so that it automatically gets created during rendering.
In case you are wondering why on earth anyone would want this, I would like to use this for display on multisport racing videos.
    Thanks

There is a Date/Time title in the titles browser, does just what it says...

Hi! My name is Tom from San Diego, CA. I have the exact same question as you. That is, I would like to be able to print out a photo from iphoto with the date that picture was taken displayed on the face of it. In this way, someone looking at that picture in a photo album years later would know when it was taken. Did you ever find a method to print copies of photos out of iphoto with the date displayed on the print? Thanks for your help!

  • Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.
