Sybase support

Guys
Is there any information on being able to use SQL developer for connecting to Sybase SQL server. Not for migration but in a manner similar to connecting to MS SQL.
Thanks

We will add support for Sybase in the future. This work will get done as we extend our migration capability to cover Sybase. It is next on our list to add. Browsing support is a by product of this effort.
What version of Sybase do you use? We are currently looking at supporting only versions 12 and 15
No availability dates yet that I can give you though.

  • Keep alive sybase database connection

    Hi,
How we can keep connections alive. In our application we are using java as frond-end and making connection to sybase database server using jconnect. We are firing big queries which took generally more than two hours to run. But firewall drops the connection which are ideal for more than 1 hour.
So, is there any way out to keep those connections alive.
    Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't be attempting to run a job that takes that long. Googling certainly suggests that Sybase supports scheduled jobs.
    That suggests the following
    1. Create a job queue (table)
    2. Create a scheduled task to process tasks in the job queue.
    3. Modify your app to put a task in the job queue.
    4. Modify your app to query for a complete job at some reasonable interval (like minutes.)
And you might look further at the design and requirements for that matter. For example there is no point in running a 2 hour job 15 times a day that returns the same results because 15 people want the same results. Instead run the job once at midnight and keep the results and return those each time for the 15 requests.
Even if the jobs are different sometimes the data can be munged in a nightly process to make it more efficient. For example create a summary for each account. Then a sales report for a specific sale rep just collects the existing summaries rather than summerizing it each time.

  • LMS 3.1 Backup job Failing

    Hello,
We have LMS 3.1 installed and the backup is failing with the following message
    [Tue Feb  8 09:20:26 2011]  ERROR(247): E:/Backup_3/backup.LOCK file exists
Most probably another backup process is running
    [Tue Feb  8 09:20:26 2011]  Backup failed: 2011/02/08 09:20:26
I tried to do the following, but it didn't work:
1- Run again the backup job, but specify a new backup directory folder (ex: E:/Backup_4/). --> Did not work
2- - Stop the Deamon Manager service using: net stop crmdmgtd --> Did not work
         - Delete the backup.LOCK file from the E:/Backup_3/ folder
         - Restart the Deamon manager service using: net start crmdmgtd
         - Run the backup job again using the new Folder destination.
    Please Advise,
    Regards,

    I am currently working on a same issue with LMS 3.1 on windows;
After stopping dmgtd have you been able to delete the backup.lock or have you restarted the server?
In my case I was not able to delete the file and it turned out dbvalid.exe blocked this. The backup seems to run without any problems. When the backup is done dbvalid.exe trys to verify the backup database files. This validation fails and dbvalid starts dbsupport.exe to get some detail information on the failure and trys to send them to Sybase support. You should find (several ?) crash files here: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\SQL Anywhere 12\diagnostics. dbsupport.exe seems to be started interactively and thus hangs up waiting for some user input...
In the crash file I see dfmInv mentioned as the database which did not pass dbvalid. I assume I will end up reinitializing the dfm databases to recover - but let's wait and see. I found some hints that there could be a bug with dbvalid.exe form Sybase- not sure if this is the culprit or a real DB error. What I found really strange is the cli of dbsupport.exe (see the option -gui at the end... )
    D:\PROGRA~1\CSCOpx\objects\db\win32\dbsupport.exe" -crash "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SQL Anywhere 10\diagnostics\SA10_20110215_040218_4348.crash_log" -crashpn "dbeng10" -crashsn "dbvdfmInvEng" -gui
Also, I would quickly backout the last know good backup from the backup directory - just in case... (the one before the failure raised the first time)

TEMP tables were made available in Oracle8i (8.1.5).
You should find information about them in the Oracle8i

  • Announcing TPS Tuxedo Toolkit

    Dear Group:
TPS, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of its Tuxedo
Toolkit. The Toolkit is a ready made Tuxedo infrastructure to build
applications with. It's intended to help new Tuxedo developers get past
the learning curve, and for company's with multiple projects it provides
a single common infrastructure that all teams can use.
Some of the Toolkit's features include:
    * Automatic XA: By simply changing a command line switch when the
server boots, you can go from No-Transactions, to SQL transactions,
to XA. The Toolkit code takes care of the navigation. You can
actually test the performance differences between XA and SQL
    transaction modes simply by rebooting.
    * TPS Service Shield: A ready made Tuxedo Service with Production
Quality features built in (Logging, Metric Gather, Security, HA,
etc.). The Application Programmer simply write a series of C
functions with the appropriate Business Logic, and the Shield takes
care of all the Tuxedo stuff.
    * Makefiles: Automatic compilation of VIEWs and FML definitions,
UBBConfig files, and Domain config files. You can create a
UBBConfig file and move it to any machine or directory, and
recompile it without changing any of the Machine specific
parameters. This allows development team members to work
independently, yet with a common test suite.
    * Unified Error Reporting: A common means of trapping and reporting
Tuxedo, DBMS, OS or Application errors, and then having those
errors flow back through all the Tuxedo layers to the originator
    (client).
    * Pre-built Servers: Servers already coded to do CRON Jobs, Logging,
    and Metric Gathering and Reporting.
    * DBMS Toolkit: Toolkits for integrating a DBMS into Tuxedo and the
Tuxedo Toolkit. Currently supporting Oracle 8.x. DB2, Informix, &
    Sybase support to come.
Now, for what I think are the best features:
    * Source Code: The entire Toolkit is provided in source form. This
way you get to see all the inner workings. Unlike Application
Generators and 4GLs that can often get in the way, if you don't
like the way something works, or if you need to do something we
didn't think of, you're free to change it.. All we ask is that you
send changes back to us for possible inclusion.
    * No Charge for Development: You are free to download--given that you
agree to the license agreement--and experiment with the Toolkit all
you like, pretty much for as long as you like--6 month eval period
    with extensions allowed.
    * Documentation: We used a real nifty tool called Doxygen from
www.doxygen.org that scans a source source tree and processes
comments inside the code and then generates HTML, MAN Pages, PDF,
and Microsoft Help files simultaneously. The output of the source
files contain hyperlinks to all functions inside the code. So, as
you are looking at a piece of code and come across a function that
you are curious about, you simply have to click on it to be taken
to its definition and the actual code. This makes maintenance a
    breeze.
    * Production License: You only pay if you use the Toolkit inside a
Production Application. Which of course we hope you will. In
return, that pays for TPS support during Deployment and Operations,
which are the most critical phases of Tuxedo development. It also
pays for maintenance and upgrades to the Toolkit with new ideas and
    features.
TPS, Inc. has been consulting with Tuxedo for about 10 years, and we
developed this Toolkit for own business. We having client after client
building their own Infrastructure or needing one for creating Prototype
applications. So we've been using it for several years now. Gauging by
the FAQ in this group, we realized that we have an answer to many of the
questions. So we've decided to make the Toolkit available to everyone
for a nominal charge. Even other consulting companies can use it free
of charge for creating Prototype Applications--they're not Production.
I founded TPS, Inc. to help clients navigate through the wilderness of
building Tuxedo based OLTP applications, and make a buck or two along
the way. Providing the Toolkit to developers seems like the logical
    next step. So enjoy.
Feel free to pass on any comments, questions, suggestions, flames,
etc. TPS, Inc. believes in Openness.
    Cheers.

Sorry Todd, I started the installation from a telnet session (from my windows based PC) so that is why Java was having all sorts of issues.
    I have installed tuxedo successfully.
Now I am trying to run the simpapp and facing issues in that :)
When I run tmloadcf ubbsimple on the command prompt, I get the following error:

any idea why it cannot find the tmloadcf?

  • Conversation lower case to upper case by default not wanted

    Hi,
Oracle converts lower case table names and columns names to upper case by default. To keep lower case letters names must be quoted. This "work around" is not acceptable.
Is there a way to change this behavior either for the database or for a session?
    Thanks

Easy answer. We are migrating from sybase ASE to
oracle. Sybase supports mixed lower/upper case by
default.Which is a proprietary behavior. After all these years of accusing Oracle of not conforming to standards, when they do (or come close) it bites them. <g>
Users are familiar with reading column names like
    "RxCellsHec0Clp0" instead of "RXCELLSHEC0CLP0".
Yes, there are users working directly with sql.If the users are used to putting the column name in double-quotes, then creating the table with identifiers in double-quotes will conform to the expected behaviour. That simply means that each and every reference to the table requires double-quote around the identifiers.
And it is quite impossible to get them changing all their queries
    from select RxCellsHec0Clp0 from ...
to select "RxCellsHec0Clp0" from ...One alternative is to wrap every table (of concern) with a view. My thought would be to leave the table with upper case identifiers, have the view with mixed-case identifiers, and use private synonyms to redirect the user to the view.
    The assumptions are
    1) user-oriented security is in place
    2) users use the quoted-identifier syntax

  • Delete Message SUp +DOE

I have a Data object that has one child node.
When in SUp I mark de root node for deletion the sup return only de confirmation for deletion the root object, in this case the child object not is erased in mobile datat base and still orphan.
How Do elete all the table content (root and child)  ?
    root
    |- child

When record is deleted, root node will be sent as delete as it is obvious that all child node instances should also be deleted. So, DOE also sends confirmation only with root node as delete. In this case, DB logic (DLLs provided by SUP server / generated code by SUP server) should take care of deleting all the child instances for the root record.
I think this case is already handled by SUP server libraries.
Please raise a CR in Sybase support center if this is not happening or raise OSS message in gateway component.
    Regards,
    Siva.

  • Does SA 16 treat chip licensing different?

I am used to dealing with SA 12 and when it would start, it would display the number of physical processors and the logical processors (cores).  It would then state how many physical processors it will use based on the license and then start worker threads for every logical processor found within the physical processors it would use.  In other words, if we have a 2 chip license and a computer with 2 quad core processors, it would say it sees 2 physical processors, 8 logical processors and I could tell through process explorer that is basically started 8 worker threads.  If it used only one of the processors, it would have fewer threads.  I am also basing this in discussions I've had in the past with Sybase support analysts.
Here's a snippet of what I see with SA 12:
Processors detected: 2 (containing 24 logical processors)
Maximum number of physical processors the server will use: 2
With SA 16, I noticed when I installed it, it asked the number of cores licensed.  This used to be the number of processors with SA 12.
This has me concerned how the new version does things.
    Here's a snippet from SA 16:
Processors detected: 2 (containing 24 logical processors)
Maximum number of processors the server will use: 2 physical processor(s), 2 core(s)
I just want to make sure I understand what the engine is going to do as far as worker threads goes because this has been an issue in the past with customers and how they setup their servers.

The license (per core or per CPU) is driven off of your install key.  It sounds like you may have (erroneously) gotten an install key for the per-core licensed version, which is used with SQL Anywhere On-Demand Edition.
Where did you get your install key from?
If you want to email me ([email protected]) your key, I can check it to see what edition of the software it is for.
If the key is incorrect, you should contact sales to get access to the correct key.

  • Licenses - where are they?

I have a need to re-assign a license.  I used to do that on the Sybase Product Download Center (i.e. Subscribenet).  Is that still the place?
If so, I don't see the two licenses that we generated in Jan/2013.  Why not?  I need to re-assign one of these.

  • PowerDesigner 16.5 Recommended Maintenance

I have installed the 16.5 Information Architect 32bit base (16.5.0.3982).   Do you recommend I install an SP03 EBF over the base to get the latest maintenance and, if so, which of the 3 EBFs below I see listed on the SAP SYBASE support portal should be used?  I'm assuming the EBFs are cumulative and no other intermediate SPs, PLs, etc need to be first applied as prereqs.
    EBF 22451: 16.5 SP03 PL01
    EBF 22756: 16.5 SP03 PL02 PowerDesigner x86
    EBF 22249: 16.5 SP03 x86

    Hi John,
    You need to install EBF 22249: 16.5 SP03 x86 first. Then you can apply EBF 22756: 16.5 SP03 PL02 PowerDesigner x86.
The SP upgrades you from 16.5.0 to 16.5.3.
The PL applies the latest bug fixes to 16.5.3.

No, not the current workbench. We will be bringing out support for Sybase 15 in SQL Developer at the next release.
You could try bringing the db down to 12 if that was an option and then migrate from that.
