Syc music to my new 3gs is being doubled

hey all
i just got a brand new iPhone 3GS 32GB. once I got it home I charged it up, installed itunes from the apple site (the latest I assume). after I installed itunes and plug my new iPhone in it said to update to the latest firmware 3.1.2 so i did. the next thing i did was sync some of my songs (these are mp3s ive made from my cd's not bought in itunes).
the problem iam having is some artists are being doubled up (i synced by artist name) 3 artists have doubled up, this is bad because each artist i have 3 to 4 cds so iam getting 9 to 12 cds doubled up. i tried removing then re syncing... not luck. ive tried converting to ACC with no luck.
i was going to try converting to iphone format in the advance menu but it is always greyed out.
any help would be great.
thanks XL

Most likely your ID tags in itunes are wrong. In iTunes, select all the CD's that are being doubled on your phone, and right click, get info. Now you can change the ID3 tag which holds information about the song. ID3 tags are different than filenames. The iPhone/iPod uses ID3 tags, not filenames to show your songs. If you get double artists, it most likely means your ID3 tags are bad.
This article may help:

There are also third party programs to batch change ID3 tags in itunes, do a google search.

  • New 3GS, older models being passed on

My new 3GS has been delivered to my house today, and I hope it sets up easily tonight!
My brother-in-law bought is purchasing my 3G from me, and passing the 1st Generation iPhone he purchased from me last year to my sister. He had to purchase a new SIMM card for the 1st Generation phone at the time.
If I understand correctly, after my 3GS is activated, my 3G SIMM will be dead. I guess that means my brother-in law will have to purchase another 3G SIMM...? And will my sister need a new SIMM too?
Is restoring the 3G to factory a no-brainer? Refresh my memory please!

All you have to do is wipe the 3G clean b4 you give it to your brother.
When he plugs into iTunes, it will see his 3G as a new, non-activated phone. Same as your sister does the 2G. No need to switch sims.
Funny how PC users never understand iTunes.

  • Is there a way to move music from my Iphone 3gs to the Itunes on my computer without deleting it?

Is there a way to move music from my Iphoe 3GS to the Itunes on my Windows 7 laptop? The hard drive of the laptop had been corrupted so it was replaced which makes the computer now register as being a new one alltogether.

If you still have the old drive you (or a helpful friend) may be able put it in an external drive bay and extract your iTunes library and other personal data from it. Otherwise see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • How do I connect my new 3gs iphone to itunes when i have a corrupted backup file

My iphone 3gs died (got stuck on the itunes screen) when I tried to upgrade it.  i never had a good backup for my phone but i tried to back up anyway. Didn't work.
Today I got a new 3gs at the apple store and now I'm trying to put everything back on it manually.  My contacts and calendar are in outlook.  My pictures are in a file on my computer.  My music is on my computer.  I don't know where my apps are (they were shown in itunes the last time I had my old phone plugged in).
So, the apple guy told me that he wouldn't restore the phone from back up, but i'm not exactly sure if that means I should reinstall itunes or just leave it as it is and set up my phone as a new device.  Any thoughts?

If you don't have a backup that is reliable, but all the components are there on your computer, I would start from scratch  and set it up as a new iOS device.

  • How can I move my iTunes music to a new iTunes account?

I need to unsync my iPhone from my spouces iPhone and I understand the only way to do this is to have my own iTunes account.  Can someone please help me with instructions on how to move my music to my new iTunes account?

Well according to what I said earlier about an account being the online account for purchasing music and what you said earlier about what you meant was indeed the online account, not what you have on your computer, then leilaboxergirl's answer was not correct.  Since you marked it as correct then what you meant was not an account after all but files from your iTunes collection.
By the way, you can do it all without a CD just by dragging tracks to a flash drive, then dragging them to an iTunes window on another computer.  Alternatively, if the computers are on the same home network you can use Home Sharing and do it all wirelessly.
Incidentally, you don't "burn songs from disc to that account".  You will rip songs from the CD to the iTunes collection or library on your computer.  Burning is what you do to put tracks on a CD not get them from a CD to a computer.
Terminology is important here or confusion will end up with you doing something wrong another time and wipe all your files or something.

  • I have just downloaded all of my music into the new itune's however all of my music has an "!" buy it and I get an error saying "original file can not be found". How do I get my music back?

I have just downloaded all of my music into the new itues, however; all of my music has an "!" but it and I get an error that says " original file can not be found".
How do I get my music back?

Ok, I had a glitch, forced to restart, and lost my train of thought.
Reinstalling iTunes should fix the major issue that might have gone wrong, perhaps your explaination points will disappear and everything will be peachy again.
But if they don't, you can open the XML file in iTunes Folder using a Text edit program to see what the common pathname is to the iTunes Music folder or where your content is located.
If you moved the itunes folder, it needs to go back.
I can't  download iTunes to my Vista virtual machine to test it out right now because iTunes is down, so I can't verify the pathname, perhaps your issue and the iTunes being down are related somehow?
You don't want to import all your music again, but it's a option, but you lose all your playlists, that's what I'm trying to recover.
If oyu don't have a whole lot of playlists, then simply select all the explaimation point music and delete, select File from the menu and import your itunes folder again.

  • Backing up 3G so I can put apps and content on my new 3Gs

Hi, I will be getting a new 3GS soon and I was told by the at&t salesperson I can back up my current 3G on my itunes so when I get my new 3GS I can add all the content:music, apps, contacts and so on. Can someone please tell me how to back up my current 3G so I can do this when I get the 3GS???
    Thanks,
    BILL

You are already doing this when your sync your existing iPhone with iTunes.
iTunes creates and maintains a backup for your iPhone, which is updated if needed as the very first step during the sync process - if any of the data on your iPhone that is included with your iPhone's backup has changed since the last sync.
Your iPhone's backup includes data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, contact info, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, photos in your iPhone's camera roll, and 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app.
All your iTunes content - music, video, podcasts, and 3rd party apps should be available/remain in your iTunes library on your computer.
Photos in your iPhone's camera roll should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
Contact info and calendar events are designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. With Vista, this can be with Outlook 2003 or 2007 for contact info and calendar events, or with the address book used by Windows Mail (Windows Contacts) for contact info only.
When you connect your iPhone 3GS to your computer and iTunes the first time, you will be prompted to transfer the backup for your iPhone 3G to your iPhone 3GS. After the backup is transferred, you must sync your iPhone 3GS with iTunes to transfer your selected iTunes content including 3rd party apps from your iTunes library, and the same for any photos you have selected to be transferred from your computer to your iPhone.

  • Has Anyone Across this Nation Received their new 3GS Yet???

Has anyone received their new 3Gs Iphone yet. I presume everyone will get them at random times throughout the day, with the East Coast possible being first because of the working hours for the deliverers. Found out mine is actually coming by FEDEX and some have told me theirs will be coming by USPS. So can someone who first receives a phone please let the rest of us know? Thanks!

    Hi,
It's approx. 9:45 AM here in Virginia and I have a black 32G 3Gs in hand. I'm so hapy with it! It's my first iphone. I went to my local Apple store and waited approx. an hour in line and paying the $300 was worth everything! I just love it!!!
All the basic features seem to be working OK. I can surf the web and I was able to jump on my local home network; it found it and automatically asked if I wanted to join it. Loaded some apps.: Sirus/XM - incidentally, Howard Stern doesn't seem to be on the available. I'll have to investigate more on this. It'll be a bummer if he's not accessible on iphone sirius. The camera and video works great. The Apple staff at the retail store here in Fairfax, VA's Fair Oaks Mall were great! It was painless and they were very accomdating. They even served coffee and bottled water and some fruit bars while were waiting in line. Go Apple Go! What a beautiful puiece of machinery. Everyone good luck. Goodbye Verizon.

  • App Icons Mismatched after syncing up new 3Gs

Has anyone else had this problem. My apps are on my new 3Gs but some, not all, have the wrong icon. For example, my Remote app show the icon for a jigsaw puzzle app but says "Remote" under the icon. The app appears to work just fine. Same thing for my Kindle app -- wrong icon but the app works fine. Thoughts?

It may work for some. I tried this on the other thread as seen with other iPhones on 3.0...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2044341&tstart=0
Doesn't seem to fix it for me. Any fix that I've seen is only temporary and for some reason or another the icons revert back. The only trend I've seen is that generally the first 3-4 pages of icons are correct, with most after that being screwed up. Moving a screwed up icon, even after re-installation does not fix the problem however. Removing the App via iTunes or the phone and then reinstalling it via sync does not seem to work.
Any ideas anyone? This is truly frustrating.

  • Cannot Register new 3GS on iTunes

    Hello,
I just purchased a 3gs as a replacement for my original 2g. At&t activated the phone in-store and I am able to make and receive calls. However, when I brought the phone home to sync to iTunes 8.2, I can't go through the Registration process. When I connect the new 3gs, iTunes gives me the "Welcome to your new Iphone... Lets get started" screen, then I click continue. However, nothing else comes up after this. I am left with a blank iTunes window. I've left my phone like this for several hours and nothing ever comes up. I do notice that the center display window at the top of iTunes is always showing "Accessing iTunes Store..."
Here's what I've done so far (i'm using a Windows XP computer by the way):
I've reset my computer multiple times... no change.
I've reinstalled iTunes multiple times and also ensured I have the most recent version from Apple... no change.
Reconnected my old 2g phone to iTunes and verified that it will still sync and update to iTunes (although service has now been transfered to 3gs).
Removed my entire music library from iTunes to rule out a corrupt library that could be causing a syncing issue to the iTunes store... no change.
Disabled Genius in iTunes (I've read this can cause some peoples' iTunes to hang)... no change.
I'm officially out of ideas and need some help... anything is appreciated. Thank you!

    Gudzy,
I had the exact same situation as you. Original iPhone owner... upgraded to 3Gs.... can't "register"
Actually, I still haven't managed to "register" my new iPhone, but it doesn't really matter! You can bypass that step. Instead of trying to "continue" just click on "Register Later" or "Never Register" or "Cancel"... I honestly forget exactly how the other button on that intro screen is labeled off-hand, but there is another button besides just "continue".
When you cancel out of that "registration" screen, it will move along and ask you whether you want to "setup as a new phone" or "restore from a backup".... hopefully you have a full, recent backup from your previous iPhone (if not, connect your original iPhone & do another backup first).
Anyhow.... just say "restore from backup" and select the backup of your old iPhone. It will completely restore your old iPhone's configuration & content onto your new iPhone.
I think I saw a quick flash on the screen at some point saying that it "could not activate iPhone..." but it didn't matter. My iPhone worked perfectly aftewards. Phone, messaging, internet/wi-fi, music, photos, videos, etc... All there! All working just fine!
Now, as for eventually registering my new iPhone for product support or service & the like.... I'm going to look into doing it manually on the Apple web site. There is most likely a place to register "manually" any new Apple product that you may have purchased. Probably just a matter of entering the serial # and a few other details. I'll let you know when I look into that. But I'm not in a hurry on that part.
Point is... it's easier to just skip that registration and move on with the business of getting your new phone fully up & running with all your content, etc....
If you still want to see what Apple has to say about it.... well, let the rest of us know what you find out... I'd be curious... but it didn't stop me from setting up & using my new iPhone 3Gs.

  • New 3GS irmware, baseband and iOS version.

i am buying a new 3GS today, unlocked. i need to essentially install the snapshot from my old 3GS, which was also unlocked.
    *my current device is:*
    Model: MB718LL
    Firmware: 05.13.04
    Baseband: ?
    iOS Version 40 (9Z999)
Based on what i've found during research, and asking Apple Live Chat, the following set up is what the current 3GS is being sold configured thusly:
    FW: 05.14.04
    Baseband: ??
    iOS: 4.2.1
so, need to know what Baseband to expect.
    Questions:
    1) can i retro-install a previous iOS if i find the 4.2.1 is not suitable for my use?
    2) what potential conflicts will i encounter by installing the "assets" (not iOS config files or support files, i mean Apps etc) on to the new device, coming from a 3GS 4.0 version device? +*i realize much of what this depends on is the individual apps compatibility regarding the given iOS+

Sorry, doesn't work quite that way.

    1) NO. Apple does not support reverting back to previous versions of the iOS.
    2) Just restore your backup from your current device, there will be no issues. If you are really concerned, simply sync your media and apps to the new device, any app specific settings (like game stats, history, etc) will be lost.
There is nothing special to this whole process, it's simply a matter of either restoring your most recent backup or setting up as a new device and syncing your media and apps. Why do you want to make it complicated?

  • Giving my wife my 3G and activating/syncing my new 3GS - sequence questions

I would like help understanding the proper sequence of actions i need to do to successfully pull this off. Here's what my goals are:
I want to give my current 3G, which is synced to my iTunes, to my wife with a blank slate. She has a seperate iTunes account and would like to take the empty 3G and sync it with her account.
Of course, i also need to transfer all the contents of the 3G to my new 3GS before i do this. Then i want to sync up my new 3GS to my iTunes and....well, you get the picture.
I am confused and anxious about getting all this right...authorizing, de-authorizing, restoring, syncing, etc. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Ok, here you go...
First, ensure you have a good backup of your 3G on your iTunes account. Next, sync your new 3GS and when it connects you'll be asked to add a new phone or restore to a previous backup... choose your 3G backup and wait for the restore to complete. Once completed you'll then need to re-sync all your content (music, videos, audiobooks, apps, etc) to the new phone. Once all that is done your 3GS should look just like to 3G did and all your settings, texts, etc. should be intact.
Then wipe the 3G by going to Settings-General-Reset-Erase All Content and Settings. Once this is complete the phone will be ready for syncing with your wife's iTunes account on her PC.
BTW, this is exactly what I did since I gave my former 3G to my wife who has her own PC and iTunes account. It all worked flawlessly.
