Sych drift using edit to tape

FCP is running perfectly in all areas except for edit to tape.
This is a new issue since upgrading to 5.1x and I've been using FCP since version 1. Audio drifts about a frame per second from the assemble edit point and i cant figure it out. Either the sound is dragging out by a frame per second or the pic is going down faster than 25 fps.
Is there a preference or setting that I'm supposed to alter?

That is a BIG offset. Typically mine run from 20 frames to 9 frames. Figuring out just WHAT the offset is tricky. If you have it figured out, and it is ALWAYS that same amount...then that is good.
Another freaking oddness with FCP. I don't have this issue when outputting to Digibeta...only HDCAM. WOnder if it is a deck/NLE communication issue.

  • Can not stripe T/C using Edit-to-tape balck and code function

I am in Edit-to-tape mode, mastering, I have T/C enabled, I am attempting to stripe an NTSC Digibeta; I click black and code and choose the settings and then select starting T/C (00;56;00;02) and click Drop Frame, click OK when it says it will erase the tape, but when it actually starts striping the tape, it does not start at 00;56;00;02, it starts at random times that appear to be generated externally.
How do I actually stripe a tape and re-write T/C?
Sorry, this is my first time doing projects like this.

Decide whether you want drop frame or Non Drop Frame and set the switch accordingly ( switch under the flip out control panel) also verify your in record run here
Set the TC switch on the deck to "INT" and "Preset" then set the TC start time, by pressing the "hold" button. You can now set hours min sec frames by pressing the jog button and rotating the jog wheel. rotate the jog wheel without pressing the jog button to select the next pair of numbers. when you have the desired start TC press the set button. If the deck is connected to black burst and you have no SDI input feeding it, and SDI selected as the input, the deck will generate black when you press record on the deck thus beginning your stripe. Stripe past 1 hr, stop the deck and rewind a little so you're in active code, set the TC switch back to "regen" from "Preset", make your patches put the deck in remote and assemble edit your piece. If you want to do an insert, stripe the tape out about 30 seconds past your last frame.
the dbeta deck will insert or assemble. Not all decks will, some won't even assemble, only hard record. consult the deck manual when in doubt

  • Print to video vs edit to tape - which to use?

I'm new to FCP. I want to output to a tape that has not been entirely blacked or striped. Should I use Edit to Tape assemble edit? Or will Print to Video work?
    thanks!

Thanks. I just read the user manual PDF and think that is the way I am going to go. I want to start at 01:00:00;00 and be frame accurate.
    thank you!!

  • Edit to Tape... intermitant error with start T/C

Having a problem using assemble & insert edit.. when outputting using Edit to Tape with a start T/C at 01:00:00:00, the first frame often starts at 00:59:59:24 (PAL so that's one frame early).. doesn't happen all the time, but enough to be really annoying...
Am using a KONA LS video card with a black burst generator. First noticed the problem years ago with a DSR11 outputting to DVCAM and assumed it was probably an issue with the DVCAM deck being useless, but this is happening with a DVW500.. so it's rather annoying as it causes all sorts of problems with audio finish etc.

timecode needs to be set to internal regen after you preset and stripe about 10 seconds ahead of your sequence start time. so if you need to start bars at 58;30;00 start stripe at 58;20;00 and go past 58;30;00. then do your assemble with deck set to internal regen.
    FCP does not output TC

  • Trying to "edit to tape"

I am trying to use the edit to tape feature so that I can put a certain timecode on the tpe I'm printing out to. ... I am having issues with it ... I black the tape using the edit to tape feature and then try puting in the timecode that i want my video to start at and FCP will not let me drop in the sequence to the edit to tape window.
I am using a panasonic DVCpro HD deck (my video is 1080i)
nd I am trying to go through a blackmagic decklink
please help! I need to be able to start picture at a certain TC on the tape
    Thanks!

I ran into the same issue printing masters of our TV shows. The Outdoor Channel required the show to start at 01:00:00;00. We tried every way possible to get the TC through FireWire to the deck until I came across a blurb in the FCP user manual that says FireWire cannot output TC. You must have another type of deck control, like RS-422. We ended up using an old deck that was laying around to black 5 minutes of TC, then used edit to tape to do an assemble edit starting at the correct TC.
If that's not an option for you, I did run across this thread while searching for an answer:

I didn't try it, but its suppose to work!

  • Edit to Tape playing out different sequence

    Hello
Does anyone know why when I try to play out one sequence using Edit to Tape it begins playing out another? I drag my sequence called 'PLAYOUT' into the Insert option, yet a different sequence from the same project starts to record on my tape. I'm completely confused!

This has happened to me once in the past, though the sequence that wanted to play out was not even in the same project. Trashing prefs should solve your problem. I was never able to figure out any other way to fix it.

  • Edit to tape

Hello, when i using "Edit to tape" (BTC SP), final cut plays only one track, but i need plays two tracks, because in the second track are subtitles. Can i make any settings or final cut dont support plays more tracks at Edit to tape? Thanks for your idea and answer.

Are you talking VIDEO tracks or AUDIO tracks? FCP always outputs a video signal that contain ALL video tracks. But it defaults to TWO audio tracks, in Stereo, unless you tell it different.
Go to the SEQUENCE menu and choose SETTINGS. Click on the AUDIO tab. There you can choose how many channels of audio you need to output, and if they are stereo or Mono.
Now, on the timeline, right-click between the lock and the autoselect button on the AUDIO tracks...on the left. THis is how you assign what audio track gets sent to what audio CHANNEL when outputting.
I think a video tutorial might be in order on this.

  • Edit to tape using Firewire

Is it possible? I've just used a SONY M25 DVCAM deck and not been able to send timecode from FCP to the deck. It generates its own timecode and does not recognise timecode via firewire. The manual says it does take timecode via RS422 cable.
Is this standard for all decks? Do any decks allow timecode in from FCP using firewire and therefore precise assemble edit control?
    Thanks for any help!

Hi - I'm not sure if this info will be of any use to you, but -
When using firewire to send video/control/edit to a DV deck your options are pretty limited.
If your client wants the program to start at an even timecode number, you can do something like this:
Put in a blank tape into the deck and rewind it to the head.
Bring up the Edit to Tape window and press the "Black and Code" button
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/BlackCodeButton.jpg!
This will let you stripe the tape with black and code, unfortunately the code starts at 00:00:00:00.
Once you have striped the tape with black and code, you can them make an edit in at specific timecode number - so if you have 1 minute of bars and tone, ten seconds of slate, 5 seconds of black and then your program starts - set your edit in point for 00:01:45:00 and your program will start at 00:03:00:00.
Not as good as being able to start at 1:00:00:00 like the real world, but at least it is a precise start.
Also - if your DV deck only allows for an assemble edit, and not an insert edit, make sure you add a minute or two of Slug to the end of your sequence so there won't be any tape break up close to the end of you program.
    Hope this helps.

  • Jittery motion when editing to tape via Blackmagic SD

I have a situation that has me a bit perplexed, and I'm hoping one of you gurus can help. We will shoot DVCAM footage, capture into FCP (now at v5.03, but this occurred with earlier versions as well), and then export a quicktime movie (not using QuickTime conversion). I then bring the movie into After Effects, and do some compositing work, and render using Uncompressed 8 bit settings. I create a new sequence in FCP with matching settings (uncompressed 8 bit), and import the movie file I created in AE. Everything looks great on my computer monitor, but when I edit to tape, any moving objects (either effects or people in the video) jitter visibly when viewed on my broadcast monitor, and the resulting BetaSP tape. There are no unrendered sections of the sequence, and the the frame dominance is the same on the imported clip and the sequence.
I can apply the de-interlace filter in FCP, and that improves the image somewhat, but it's still visible.
    Any suggestions?

... and the the frame dominance is the
same on the imported clip and the sequence.
it seems that the filed dominance is wrong:
upper or lower field dominace is determined by your blackmagic card and the codec used.
in your sequence settings use easy setup to load the correct settings for the codec you are using with your blackmagic card. after that, read what the field dominance is set to. use the same field dominance when rendering in AE.
    good luck,
    kurt

  • Having trouble with audio edit to tape, print to video ok

Hi all, please go easy on me, this is my first post.
I am having difficulty getting audio on to tape via 'edit to tape'.
The hardware is blackmagic decklink extreme, feeding component video and analoge audio to a UVW-1800P.
I can do a print to video on a crash record and the audio works that way, but edit to tape does not.
I have tried both deck link and built in audio in the audio settings and the FCP a/v settings, seperate and ganged output settings, I have set the insert settings to 2 channel Sony, reloaded the decklink drivers.
The irritating thing is the audio is there whilst cutting, but as soon as I try edit to tape there is complete silence. The important thing is that it worked a few weeks back but does not now, it must be a setting?
Thanks in advance for your help.
This machine I am working with this week is an Intel MacPro running FCP 5.1.2 and Mac OS 10.4.8
    G5 Dual 2GHz-Blackmagic Decklink Pro, G3 with Sonnet G4 upgrade   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    G5 Dual 2GHz-Blackmagic Decklink Pro, G3 with Sonnet G4 upgrade   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had this same problem and this resolved it for me:
-Go to your "Settings" icon and click on the "General" tab.
-About 2/3 way down the page you will see "Use side switch to:" - make sure "mute" is checked rather than "lock rotation."
-Then make sure the side switch, located next to the volume toggle switch on the side of your ipad, is moved to the right (no red dot showing).
My audio worked fine in embedded videos after I did those two things.  Hope it works for you.

  • Edit to tape in Final Cut Studio 2 question

This entire week we've been dividing time and shoots using one camera, a Panasonic DVX100A. As a result I think the settings on our camera and computer have changed a bit between shoots. That being said I'm having a problem doing an 'Edit to Tape' from the file menu in Final Cut Pro 6.0.3. When the Edit to Tape window comes up, we set the in point there after pulling over the Sequence we want to edit to tape on the camera monitor for the recorder it says it's recording. However, all I see it a blue screen with the 'REC' notice at the top. Since we've done this using this camera a few times I'm not sure what settings may have changed. To sum up, I need to know what has to change in order for me to effectively edit a sequence to tape in FCP 6. Thanks (most definitely) in advance for your help!

Alex, thanks for your help. I didn't notice one of the FCP settings for my camera had been changed. Funny how working at 2:45 a.m. can sneak up on your brain.
    Thanks again & take care!

  • Edit to tape INSERT & NO AUDIO

Ok, so i have a brand new Mac, Decklink Blackmagic Extreme HD card in it. Everything works properly, except the insert edit to tape. When I perform an assemble edit through the "Edit to tape" window it works fine, but cannot get the insert edit to insert audio?? Using a Sony UVW-1800 deck. Performed a test on the deck with another editor and it worked fine. Using the Blackmagic 10Bit Easy setup thus far. A bit confused about what the device control settings should be, or where I should be looking to get FCPS2 to tell the deck to record audio when doing an insert edit. And before you ask, yes I have selected "all on" from the "edit to tape" window audio pop-up.
I need help soon, as this is how we put all our productions to master tapes for the company!! Thanks in advance!!

Alright, if you have a Decklink card, and a BetaSP deck... this will be VERY helpful!!!

  • Edit to tape... Cannot Assemble...

Hi, I am trying to edit a 30sec commercial spot to tape to get it to the local cable company ASAP. I have a Powermac G5 outputting to a Multibridge extreme, controling a Panasonic AJ-D455 DVCPro deck. I have the timeline all set to export but when I drag it over to the Edit to Tape window, all options (insert, assemble, preview) are grayed out. Please help me.
    Thanks
    Paul

First of all, why not go out Firewire? That will keep the output a digital copy of your timeline.
If you insist on using the Decklink, make sure your settings are correct (device settings) - you should be able to control the deck prior to output. Do you get an error message when you click the black tape button?

  • Edit to Tape not working for me!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

    Hey everyone,
I've researched this in many forums and have found what could be the answer, only to try and still get NOTHING!!!
When I drag seq. to ETT window I get the pop-up but 'insert', 'assemble', and 'preview' are kind of greyed out, and don't let me drop anything in, i.e sequence from browser, from viewer, clips, etc.

Footage was shot 720P 24PN on Panasonic HVX200. Ingested via P2 Cards/P2 Store, (W/ REMOVE ADVANCED PULLDOWN FRAMES checked).
Project was edited in a 23.98 timeline.
Have tried: Exporting to QT at both 29.97 and 59.94—then re-importing into FCP with a new timeline w/ matching settings.
I have been told that FCP doesn’t produce TC ‘going out’ and that essentially we are looking to 'MATCH-EDIT' to timecode on tape.
I have Black and coded tape to 00:58:50;00
Project In point is 00:59:00;02 --for all intents/purposes this is a test seq. so OUT point is 01:01:00;07
I have complete Deck Control in FCP but, the problem I’m having is not being able to use the “Edit to Tape” func. In FCP. I can Black and Code the beginning of the tape, and the “ETT” window shows the corresponding timecode on the deck, but when I go to drop the sequence in the ‘Insert’ or ‘Assemble’ drop box, I get nothing? I don’t know if it’s the settings in the DECK, KONA CARD or FCP??
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!SHOW AIRING in 2 DAYS!!!!
    Thanks
    Zack

That deck cannot do insert editing or assemble editing with proper show time to the 1200 deck. That is that decks big weakness. Only the 1400 deck has this ability. You'll have to crash record and then get the tape dubbed at a dub facility with the proper show code.
TRUST ME...I have been down this path.
