Symbian 25.007 on Nokia N8

At the moment I'm on 22.014! I've been checking for updates OTA for a few weeks just for kicks. I checked through Nokia Suite today and there is this 25.007 update. Only problem is it's not the 1MB update I keep reading about! This is a 1.3GB update!
Did I miss a couple updates that somehow added up (big time)? Is this normal? Is it safe to update?

OTA just updates the bits of the OS that require it
NSU downloads and installs a complete image over the top of your previous firmware install
It's perfectly fine

if your phone is network branded, the network mayhave not yet authorized release of firmware for their phones.

  • Patch for Symbian Anna released? (Nokia E7)

    Hi All
I am not sure what is going on.
My E7 was serviced by NOKIA care Point one week ago. Phone came back to me with Symbian Anna and all updates applied (I checked it same day the phone was back)
Today, when checking Applications>SW Update I noticed this:
    My Question is:
Is this update about patch for Symbian Anna?
Because here are details of my system:
I am confused because same set of updates came from Nokia when I was updating from Symbian^3 to Anna.
    Can any one explain this?

let me give you some more flashes:
    1. 7370 reset will tell you that all the 3 updates are required.
    2. after doing so, ovi store will not work.
    3. you will scour this forum and find out that you have to install 3 files, in proper sequence, reboot system.
    4. bad luck.
    5. then you will try 3 button reset
    6. WOW. ovi store will work after the similar 3 file anna update
    7. you will call nokia care line
    8. they will tell you that 3 button reset is not nokia recommended and that you will have to "reflash" your device
    9. you will lose your cool, especially after having come from the same place already
    10. then you will scream out loud in this forum.
    11. you will get used to the problem or you will optimistally wait for Belle.
whew... sometimes, i tend to think that if the above process is standard in one order or the other, there is no need for this forum! nokia can post this in a website itself as a
    if... then... else... code prose!

  • Will symbian be released for Nokia N8

Will symbian belle be released for Nokia N8 ?

Apparently they had a few of the current Anna devices with the official Belle version on display at Nokia world so I agree with Vaidovesta, it will be soon.
I doubt it will come this month; it will be more of a Christmas present
Show your appreciation. Hit that kudos button real hard

  • If symbian is opensource why nokia not wont share ...

I mean, nokia take too much time to release an update. Share the damn source code so users could improve the phone software by themselves. And nokia can reduce its costs by firing some programmers that dont do anyshit right....

I mean, nokia take too much time to release an update
What are you talking about ?
The fact that Nokia took 3 months or so to build latest firmware .
Or the fact  that phone firmware gets held up once Nokia have passed it to the phone providers .
Releasing the code wont make the network providers work any faster to update individual phones .

  • Nokia 500 symbian belle w/ NFC support?

i wonder if i upgrade to symbian belle on my nokia 500, will it able to add NFC support? TY
    Nokia user since 2004.
    Owned 3310, 1100, 3300, 6600, 6300, 5310, 5130, N79, 5800.
Owns: 6230 (still alive) and 500....
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well the Nokia "Store" seems to think that the Nokia 500 has "NFC SUPPORT"... Please take a look at this link:
It clearly states there the folllowing:
     - "Simply perform the NFC handshake with another Nokia 500, 600 or 700 to unlock content."
So I don't know if whoever posted it up was trying to mislead people who own the Nokia 500 into buying their application and make them think that the software will "enable" NFC on the device.... Or just a "typo"?
It probably was a marketing strategy..... "me thinks"...

  • Symbian Belle for Nokia E6

Hi , Today I read on Nokia website , symbian belle is available for Nokia E6, is that correct? has anyone upgrade symbian anna to symbian belle
    http://www.nokia.com/sg-en/products/featured-phones/belle/for Nokia e6
    Arun

Better not to upgrade E6 to belle, I had upgraded  it to Belle, Belle is good for Big Screen like N8 and E7 it is not good for E6, In one screen you can create only 8 shortcut, where as in anna in i thhnik it was more that 12.
I am not happy with Belle on my E6, offcourse my phone become faster, apart from that you will get less apps, like fring is not available, my son's favourate Frunit ninza is not available.
therefore final conclusion :  do not go for upgrade to Belle on E6.
I will request nokia to release some new FW for Nokia E6, why because if it is a bussiness phone, at least provide -email, calender and clock in one home screen, right now which is not possible.

  • Nokia N8, RM-596 Symbian^3 Keyboard and Font - Lan...

Back in the 'old' days of Nokia Symbian S60 Devices. Nokia has decided that each phone sold to each region (Europe, China, North America, Middle East Africa, India, Thailand) would have separate language packs.
If you live in North America, you probably get Latin Fonts without support for CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), Arabic, Hindi, Hebrew.... etc. and the Keyboard is limited to English, French, Spanish, maybe Italian...
So now, the iPhone and the Android has come out. It has a unicode font set that will display almost every single character of any Latin-based or Foreign non-Latin based language.
So when you are in the US, live in the US and speak English as your mother tongue. But also speak Hebrew, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Japanese, Spanish, French... your iPhone/Android will be able to browse web pages, read text messages in these languages...
BUT on a Nokia Device... you are stuck.
If you bought a phone in the US. You most probably see ? or 'squares' when going to a foreign languages website or when you receive a message in a foreign language outside your 'pre-destined' language pack.
Then, you need to say, input something in Japanese... but you can't because your keyboard set does not support it.
In the end, many people had to go to Nokia Care and have their phones re-flashed to their desired language. Those who speak more than what Nokia provides as language packs are hooped.
For example, someone who needs Thai, CJK and French cannot do any typing or reading for all these languages in the same device because the regional language pack in Latin-Based Languages.
    With the iPhone/Android, you can!!!!
Of course, you can create your own unicode font and place it in E:\ or F:\ to override the Nokia pre-installed limited font set... and then hope that there is a 3rd Party FEP (IME) that will override the Nokia (Virtual) Keyboard that will work with your device so you could input in a language that is not English.
In short, this is a PAIN when Nokia does not release a fully flexible firmware that is truly UNIVERSAL in nature that works with the WORLD and make the phone a WORLD PHONE!
I am, we are, all of us are tired of hacking into our phones, changing language packs, fonts, FEPs to make our Nokia Device suit our needs.
So... my question to the Nokia N8 Developers, Sales & Marketing Team.
Does the Nokia N8, rather Symbian S^3
    a) Does the Font installed in the Nokia N8 (Symbian S^3) Device support all languages, foreign languages, Double-Byte Characters so like someone in the US or Canada or the UK or maybe even Europe or China.... can read something in a foreign language?
    b) Does Nokia have a Universal IME, e.g., FEP that will allow users to switch language input?
OR do we have to find hacks and workarounds again?
Please HELP! I need to know before I buy another Nokia Device and get disappointed!
    Solved!

OK. This is confirmed. Font replacement in the S^3 Device Nokia N8 is the same as previous (minus a few devices that required the font router)
I am going to re-edit my Nokia Sereis 60 Font again... because I used an ugly but almost complete Unicode Typeface.
Just place your 'modified font' in E:\Resource\Fonts or F:\Resource\Fonts. The font should have the same font name, font family as what the S^3 device ships with.
Simple as in N97 and N97 Mini Font Replacement and older Nokias that do not require the 'Font Router' application that cannot be installed and used in some S60 devices.
Just don't know what the size limitations are this time.
This is from the S^3 Developer's Guide on Fonts
Symbian^3 Product Developer Library > Symbian Guide > Text and Localization Guide > Font and Text Services Collection > Font Store Component > Font Store Tutorials >
The font store automatically loads all files in \resources\fonts\ on all drives at startup. The search path is soft to hard ( Y:, X:, W:, ..., C:, B:, A:, Z and if two or more files have the same name the first one found is used. This means that files in the ROM (Z can be replaced with files on user drives.
The font store assumes that the files are in an appropriate format (see). Unsupported font files require a corresponding font rasterizer plug-in.
To install a font file at startup:
Copy it into \resources\fonts\ on any drive.
Restart the device to restart the Font and Bitmap server.
It is also possible to load a font file dynamically at run time. It is not possible to install a new font rasterizer at run time, however, so font files installed at run time must either be bitmap fonts or supported by an existing font rasterizer.
To dynamically install a font file:
Call CWsScreenDevice::AddFile() , specifying the file to be loaded.
Nokia just gave me a new project to do. I don;t know if I should thank them or curse them for not providing this basic feature. Font + Languages!

  • Nokia 500 Review on Symbian Belle

After the update screen went through, I had my fingers crossed, and despite the screen saying “15 minutes remaining,” the update was finished in about 5 minutes.
Upon startup, there was a line of dots (….) which lighted up on after the other sort of like a loading bar and it was. After the loading came the usual language selection and Ovi suite options (“Create an Ovi Account” “I have an account” and of course “Later.”) after going through the Ovi suite options (literally took 10 seconds) my carrier had charged me about 0.45cents (USD cents) for the tips I had signed up on while I still had Symbian Anna on the device. Nokia suite was installing support software after the phone booted up and after 5 more minutes, I set the date, time and location and I was presented with the home screen. The standard home screen as on other Belle devices with the Flip clock, Ovi Social widget and 4 icons (Camera, contacts, Angry birds [oh yea!] and Maps) at the last widget’s position; at the bottom edge of the screen are menu, call and home screen options. The widgets take a few seconds to load but once they load they don’t lag. The second home screen has “Favorite contacts” widgets and 4 more icons (Messaging, Store, Calendar and Web), the third home screen has a Music player widget and the 4th home screen is blank for the user to customize. Unlike other Nokia/Symbian Belle devices, the Nokia 500 only has 4 home screens as opposed to 6.
The lock screen is similar to the Anna screen and is only redesigned. The Belle home screen allows usage of a background unlike Symbian Anna’s.
Now the menu: unlike Symbian Anna, the menu does not have an applications folder so everything is spread out on the home screen creating a mini mess. Luckily, there is an option to create a new folder in which to put your apps in.
In Symbian Anna, the keypad for ‘Call’ was not very user friendly as the ‘*’ and ‘#’ where not where they would be on a physical alphanumerical keypad, but on Belle, the keypad is identical to the physical one and very responsive.
    Apps:
While Symbian Anna lagged on the Nokia 500, Nokia Belle is very smooth. I don’t see any major changes with the camera on the 500 and the quality remains the same. There have been some rumors going around about the Nokia 500 getting HD video with the Belle update but these rumors are not true and the Nokia 500 remains with the usual 640p*313p video. While on Symbian Anna, there was no ‘Gallery’ icon but there is one on Symbian Belle and a separate ‘Videos’ icon is there too for easy access to downloaded videos (yes downloaded videos or those NOT taken with the phone’s camera). The angry birds app is a hugely wanted app for the Nokia 500 and is very identical to the computer version. Actually, it IS the computer version in smaller scale. Symbian Belle still allows the user to kill unwanted applications running in the background by holding down the menu key and clicking the ‘X’ icon. Ovi maps on the device is version 3.06 as predicted and even if not version 3.08, it still gets the job done.
The settings menu is the same and nothing major there too. On Symbian Anna, the Nokia 500 has many themes for different colors but on Symbian/Nokia Belle, the 500 only has one “Nokia Evolve” theme which means the users have to download their own themes for personalization.
Overall, the icons seem a bit smaller especially on the home screen and this makes the phone look abit tiny which it is. The size was not brought out in Symbian Anna but in Belle we can see how small the screen on the phone is compared to devices like the E7, N8 and Nokia 701.
With Symbian Belle, the Nokia 500 is able to really show its 1Ghz processor at work and even if it might not be able to play (fancy) 3D games due to the lack of a OpenGL compatible GPU, it can still allow us to play OpenVG games such as “Asphalt 6: Adrenaline” and “Nuke Defender 3D” available from Ovi store.

Great to see you are a happy user. I have just bought two Nokia 500 phones (another for my wife), upgraded to Belle, and both have the same infuriating problems:
    - system crashes half a dozen times a day without any warning (during calls, browsing, text messaging)
    - if I change the language for text messages, I cannot type anything (SMS) any more
    - when phone goes to sleep, it often won't wake up and I need to remove the battery (after doing this 4-5 times a day one starts to get very frustrated).
I am very disappointed and cannot recommend the phone to anyone. First Nokia that I feel this way with.

    N8 will be getting updates.
Just because nokia release a new devive with a new OS doesnt mean they forget the old devices.

The question you are asking is one that cannot yet be answered. You can be safe in the knowledge that your N8 will get map updates for at least the next two years. Beyond that is too far ahead to predict so no one can yet give you a definitive accurate answer.
Thanks for your replies. I know and understand it's difficult to 'look into the future'. But sometimes there are announcements, like the one in my first post.
I was just wondering if there was any announcements/news on future map updates for Symbian^3 smartphones, when Nokia will switch to WP7.
The reason is that my father is looking for a new phone. He's like from a previous generation. No need for apps, facebook, twitter, web surfing or any of the modern features. All he wants to do with it are making good quality pictures, navigate his car and of course... making phone calls. Based on these 3 wishes I came to the Nokia N8. But there was 1 last wish I could not find a solution for: he wants to use it untill the phone falls apart from age. But the future of Nokia Maps on Symbian is unsure.
To illustrate the longterm use of 1 phone: he already has his N73 for around 5 years, and wouldn't be looking for a replacement, but his trusty phone starts to fall apart. It's difficult for him to learn to use a new OS. I am actually astonished that as a senior he isn't using such a black/white with huge dial buttons granny cellphone. Apparantly, some of my 'geekiness' is rubbing off on him.   )
Anyway, that's why I am trying to look a bit further than the 1 or 2 years most people do with their phone (since most cellphone plans are 1 or 2 years).
I am still in doubt what to advise him. Are there other alternatives for smarphones making reasonalble quality photo's/videos and free (downloadable/offline usable) navigation maps?

  • Nokia 5800 -like compass navigation view (or app) ...

Can I get anywhere same like navigation compass app to my new Nokia 701 (or any other Symbian ¨3 version) as Nokia 5800 had? When hunting, I like to add navigation points (for example where I left my car). Of course I can get walking navigation via maps (and choose straight line), but I miss Nokia 5800 style compass view, where I can use saved favorites as navigation points.
