Symbian^3 on Nokia N8, upgradable to Symbian^4?

There's been a lot of writing the last few days about Nokia N8 to be the last Symbian N-series device, officially confirmed by Nokia. I'm still planning to buy a N8, i just have one big issue; will it be possible to upgrade to Symbian^4 in the future? I'm not the only one with this question since it has been posted on several Nokia-blogs.

  • Nokia C6-01 cant upgrade to Symbian Belle from Sym...

Pls advise me how to solve this problem cause i cant upgrade my C6-01 to Symbian Belle using Nokia Suite 3.3.89.

First check whether Nokia belle is available for your phone's product come and region. Check belle availability page of Nokia Europe's website. If its available, try updating with the latest Nokia suite. Check whether your antivirus is blocking connection to your Nokia suite. Refresh repeatedly for the update to appear. Try advancing the date a few days or weeks and check again. If nothing works, take your phone to Nokia care and they'll update it for you. All the best.

  • Will Nokia N8 be upgraded to Symbian 4

Is there possibilities that the Nokia N8 be upgraded  to Symbian 4 or will happen same as it has happen to Nokia N900
In that case is it good to Purchase Nokia N*

Based on historical precedent, it is unlikely (as already stated) that the N8 will be updated ro Symbian^4, but not necessarily impossible.
Nokia doesn't tend to upgrade the entire OS of a phone, but Nokia hasn't yet had two OSs developed so closely as ^3 and ^4, so there might less incompatibility - usually the problem is that the software tends not to be backwards-compatible with the old hardware, so it isn't cost-effective to update older devices (and also, why update a two-year old device when you can sell a new one?) - with both ^4 being already developed even before the initial launch of ^3 we can assume that they are being developed with similar hardware specs in mind.
That aside, I'm in full agreement with synth_fg - the N8 is looking like an impressive phone, why write it off and OS when it hasn't even been seen in action in the wild?
As for Nick's comments, if you fancy a move away from Symbian, at least choose a comparable OS that will offer similar freedom of use - however many iPhones they sell, if Apple keeps its current attitude to complete control over the buyer's use of its products, it will never be a real 'competitor' for any other smartphone - it will always just occupy its own little niche away from the rest of the world just as Mac computers always have.

  • Nokia 500 Review on Symbian Belle

After the update screen went through, I had my fingers crossed, and despite the screen saying “15 minutes remaining,” the update was finished in about 5 minutes.
Upon startup, there was a line of dots (….) which lighted up on after the other sort of like a loading bar and it was. After the loading came the usual language selection and Ovi suite options (“Create an Ovi Account” “I have an account” and of course “Later.”) after going through the Ovi suite options (literally took 10 seconds) my carrier had charged me about 0.45cents (USD cents) for the tips I had signed up on while I still had Symbian Anna on the device. Nokia suite was installing support software after the phone booted up and after 5 more minutes, I set the date, time and location and I was presented with the home screen. The standard home screen as on other Belle devices with the Flip clock, Ovi Social widget and 4 icons (Camera, contacts, Angry birds [oh yea!] and Maps) at the last widget’s position; at the bottom edge of the screen are menu, call and home screen options. The widgets take a few seconds to load but once they load they don’t lag. The second home screen has “Favorite contacts” widgets and 4 more icons (Messaging, Store, Calendar and Web), the third home screen has a Music player widget and the 4th home screen is blank for the user to customize. Unlike other Nokia/Symbian Belle devices, the Nokia 500 only has 4 home screens as opposed to 6.
The lock screen is similar to the Anna screen and is only redesigned. The Belle home screen allows usage of a background unlike Symbian Anna’s.
Now the menu: unlike Symbian Anna, the menu does not have an applications folder so everything is spread out on the home screen creating a mini mess. Luckily, there is an option to create a new folder in which to put your apps in.
In Symbian Anna, the keypad for ‘Call’ was not very user friendly as the ‘*’ and ‘#’ where not where they would be on a physical alphanumerical keypad, but on Belle, the keypad is identical to the physical one and very responsive.
    Apps:
While Symbian Anna lagged on the Nokia 500, Nokia Belle is very smooth. I don’t see any major changes with the camera on the 500 and the quality remains the same. There have been some rumors going around about the Nokia 500 getting HD video with the Belle update but these rumors are not true and the Nokia 500 remains with the usual 640p*313p video. While on Symbian Anna, there was no ‘Gallery’ icon but there is one on Symbian Belle and a separate ‘Videos’ icon is there too for easy access to downloaded videos (yes downloaded videos or those NOT taken with the phone’s camera). The angry birds app is a hugely wanted app for the Nokia 500 and is very identical to the computer version. Actually, it IS the computer version in smaller scale. Symbian Belle still allows the user to kill unwanted applications running in the background by holding down the menu key and clicking the ‘X’ icon. Ovi maps on the device is version 3.06 as predicted and even if not version 3.08, it still gets the job done.
The settings menu is the same and nothing major there too. On Symbian Anna, the Nokia 500 has many themes for different colors but on Symbian/Nokia Belle, the 500 only has one “Nokia Evolve” theme which means the users have to download their own themes for personalization.
Overall, the icons seem a bit smaller especially on the home screen and this makes the phone look abit tiny which it is. The size was not brought out in Symbian Anna but in Belle we can see how small the screen on the phone is compared to devices like the E7, N8 and Nokia 701.
With Symbian Belle, the Nokia 500 is able to really show its 1Ghz processor at work and even if it might not be able to play (fancy) 3D games due to the lack of a OpenGL compatible GPU, it can still allow us to play OpenVG games such as “Asphalt 6: Adrenaline” and “Nuke Defender 3D” available from Ovi store.

Great to see you are a happy user. I have just bought two Nokia 500 phones (another for my wife), upgraded to Belle, and both have the same infuriating problems:
    - system crashes half a dozen times a day without any warning (during calls, browsing, text messaging)
    - if I change the language for text messages, I cannot type anything (SMS) any more
    - when phone goes to sleep, it often won't wake up and I need to remove the battery (after doing this 4-5 times a day one starts to get very frustrated).
I am very disappointed and cannot recommend the phone to anyone. First Nokia that I feel this way with.

  • IS SYMBIAN^1 UPGRADE TO SYMBIAN^3........????

    Hi, brother.
Yesterday I mailed to symbian about upgrading symbian^1 to Symbian^3. and I got replay today. And they are telling that if nokia want they can give symbian^3 to their symbian^1 customers. If it happens its next very good thing after MAPs.
If u interested in this topic then send a request mail to nokia for upgrading.
    What u say.........?

While i agree with chanchan05 observations, i think it's possible.... Symbian^3 supports ARM11 architecture.... it may not be practical nor reasonable to implement (not to mention cheap), even for a 'lite' version without some 'candies'...
However it would show that Nokia really cares about customers, X6, N97, 5530 and 5230 would be eligible as well for the update...
But i really doubt it that there will be any effort in that way by nokia's side.... if there was any plans in that way Nokia would just correct existing bugs instead of implement/enhance new features on current firmwares...
Because of the restrictive OS and IDE (however Qt Creator looks promising) i, as a programmer, give up of doing stuff for my phone (i actually did 3 small games and pseudo WRT plugin for Webkit) ... i would reconsider it if S^3 came to my phone... oh well...
We can always dream .... or hope that some crazy, highly skilled (and perhaps angry?) programmer finds a way to force it into...
5800xm on a blender ... will happen sooner than expected.... v51 is a failure as an update .... v52 just postponed its fate....

  • Map updates for Symbian version of Nokia Maps/Driv...

The last map update I had for my Nokia 808 is from back in April of this year.
Is Nokia no longer providing map updates for the Symbian version of Nokia Maps/Drive software?
This would be VERY disappointing if so.
Please respond, and not ignore this question.
    thank you

    thanks!
But sadly Nokia didn't even have the manners to respond in that thread either.. so there is still no answer.
I just dropped $550 on a Nokia 808 Pureview, with the assumption that I will have good GPS software...
Now Nokia is abandoning map updates for symbian?
I will be outraged if this is the case..
    NOKIA please respond!!

  • Symbian Belle for Nokia E6

Hi , Today I read on Nokia website , symbian belle is available for Nokia E6, is that correct? has anyone upgrade symbian anna to symbian belle
    http://www.nokia.com/sg-en/products/featured-phones/belle/for Nokia e6
    Arun

Better not to upgrade E6 to belle, I had upgraded  it to Belle, Belle is good for Big Screen like N8 and E7 it is not good for E6, In one screen you can create only 8 shortcut, where as in anna in i thhnik it was more that 12.
I am not happy with Belle on my E6, offcourse my phone become faster, apart from that you will get less apps, like fring is not available, my son's favourate Frunit ninza is not available.
therefore final conclusion :  do not go for upgrade to Belle on E6.
I will request nokia to release some new FW for Nokia E6, why because if it is a bussiness phone, at least provide -email, calender and clock in one home screen, right now which is not possible.

  • Nokia's Strategy with Symbian, I really don't get ...

I've tried to let the dust settle a bit since the announcement last week and I've come to the conclusion that I really don't get it.
Now there have been a lot of conversations on these boards about it and I've tried to read as much as I can as I'm interested in what might happen with my N8.
But the more I think about it, the more it doesn't make sense!
Now I should say that I am not one of those who is against the partnership or Nokia and Microsoft, indeed it could be that Nokia's influence on the W7 OS will mean the Nokia devices in the future will be excellent. That remains to be seen.
My problem is with the Symbian side of things. Here's what I see:
The statement says that they want to sell 150m more Symbian devices in the next few years.
So how can they possibly do that without ensuring Symbian can compete with Android, thereby meaning that they have to keep updating it surely? Trying to modernise it.
But how can they do that whilst supporting WP7 as well? Surely the cost of that is massive.
The only way I can see this working is if Symbian and WP7 gradually start to come into line, looking the same and doing the same kind of things which means that Symbian will continue to get good updates.
If there are hundreds of millions of Symbian users out there then strategically it makes no sense to abandon them. Unless you do what I said in my previous statement.
But if you continue to invest in Symbian, what is the point in moving to WP7?
Well there may be some point in it, but the timing and scale of the announcement is ludicrous. By all means say "We are going in partnership with MS and in the next few years we will consider a transition to the windows platform". that works because it implies natural progression to a new OS without abandoning the other one.
So if you continue to invest in Symbian (which i think is the logical approach to keep loyal Nokia users), what happens if it gets good? Starts selling really well?
You have got yourself a stupid award for acting like a kid who thinks he's made a new friend only to realise his old friend was actually much more reliable and it turns out more popular as well.
So I've waffled a bit, but what i'm trying to say is that this is a lose/lose situation Nokia find themselves in. they either:
    1) Abandon loyal users, literally millions of them. Lose that business and pretty much might as well give up
    Or
    2) Continue to support Symbian and make it good and competitive, then why the hell is WP7 their only strategy?
OR, bring the 2 products together so we get used to the UI and functionality gradually so when it comes to getting a new phone, the WP7 OS feels like an old friend. Surely that's it isn't it? Nokia's influence on Windows will actually be greater than the Microsoft influence on Nokia?????? That's the only sensible conclusion I can come to!

BlackBerryHelp on twitter is one avenue. The best way to get support is by calling your carrier.  If they are unable to solve your issue they should transfer you to BlackBerry's support line.
