  • Does Mac have any plans to create and/or update drivers for multi-media hardware that is useless to me after "upgrading" to Mavericks? This is a waste of money for free..

I have found that since I "upgraded" to Mavericks, many pieces of audio hardware that was compatable with snow leopard is not compatable with mavericks. these machines are supposed to be the best for multi-media, now, without any warning, Mac has really messed this up. What are they thinking. I just converted from PC. Was it a $3000 mistake. MAC....Get BUsy, It can't be that hard to create some drivers that are compatable with common and popular pieces of hardware needed to do the projects I bought this thing for!!!!

similar problem here. running the latest 13 inch mbpr and ableton live software, mavericks obvsly.
experiencing crashes only with external soundcards attached. it happened with a usb interface (NI audio 2 dj) and with a echo audiofire 2 (firewire through thunderbold adapt.)
keyboard and trackpad got unresponsive after the crash with the usb interface as they run on the usb buss I suppose.
This is interesting: If i m running usb or firewire interfaces plugged in to my thunderbold display at home - i get 0 problems. it just works 100%
so what does this tell us? is the hardware of the macbook defective?
but why does the FW interface crash then when attached to the computer directly and not if attached to the display?
this is extremely frustrating. basically my job is using this machine on stage and i cant use it. i m back to my 2007 macbook now running 10.6, thinking about getting a USED machine which was before mavericks and haswell - think these are the issues and what i would like to know:
WILL THERE EVER BE A FIX FOR THIS ON THE LATE 2013 MBPr??

  • HT2731 i have an Apple ID and want to get free ringtones on my iPhone 4.  What more do i need for this?

I have an Apple ID and want to get free ringtones on my iPhone 4.. What more is needed to do this?  I have worked on this all day and I am very frustrated.

You could have multiple libraries on one computer and then hold the Shift key down when startng iTunes to choose which library to use.
Or you can have everything in one Library with organized media and apps using multiple Apple IDs.
    Which would you choose?

  • Front Row - Mac Mini - and PowerBook G4, Mac-Mini Multi Media centre.

I will be purchasing a HDTV is the near future and would like to buy a Mac Mini to complement it. ( then sell my DVD player )
    The big question are:
-Can I ( using Front Row ) stream AVI data (film) from my PB G4 to my Mac-Mini and watch the content on my new HDTV. ( over AirPort )
-Do I need to buy a new PB that also has Front Row ? ( I hope not )
-What type of video data can I stream ? (iTunes and iPhoto I already know about)
-What about HD DVD's when they come out. Is the drive in the Mac-Mini HD DVD compatible ?( I don't think so )
Please - If you have any other relevant points or question's about the Mac-Mini usage as a multi media centre, Post them here.
    15" PB G4 SD 1.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I just tried a AVI film and it work's with QT,
although a mpg film did not.
Now that I think about it, I tried a mpg plug-in for
    QT and was disappointed.
Has anyone had any success with such a plug-in ?
    Another Question:
Must then this AVI data reside in iTunes for
Front-Row to "see" it ? How does this work ?
I guess that when a Blue-Ray drive is added to Apple
products that a HD DVD will not play, or will it play
it but only burn Blue-Ray ?
When shopping for a HDTV I asked about the difference
in Blue-Ray and HD and he told me that the TV will
    play both versions.
I hope that the drive will also play both, although
the way I know Apple it will be Blue-Ray only. (
    at-least in the beginning ) Remember DVD-R
i would not worry about the blu-ray - HD-DVD thing right now. too much still in the air. once they realize consumers are too un-techie to figure it out and just continue to buy DVD's their will be a standard plus their is already other formats being developed. then if you talking about movies and such my guess is downloaded content is the way apple will go with an itunes movie store but thats my guess.
but yes, HDTV's will play either, its the player. I have a 61" samsung 720p DLP and my new mac mini looks good on it at 1280x720. front row is great. I also watched a ton of HD trailers from quicktime's website and they were amazing.
and from what i have seen from front row it only shows content that is in itunes or iphoto not random folders but i could be wrong, still palying around with it.

  • Bluetooth won't pair both audio and phone. Car multi-media in range and turned on?

I have iOS 8.1.3.  Can no longer use both phone and audio- it disconnects one to pair the other and doesn't allow both. Error message says make sure car multi-media is turned on, in range, and ready to use.

Thanks Peter! I had done  that before multiple times with no success- even turning off bluetooth and the phone in hopes for a reset; I called Apple and my rad service person Shaquita requested I turn off my wireless, reset my network, and try again. That worked and both the audio and the phone paired. Have a great day! Hopefully this helps others with the same issue; but I understand that the bluetooth may kick out again and I may have to repeat this process. Kind regards, Angela

  • Is ther a way to speed up a Mac? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.  When memory comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? Is there a way to determine unused programs/software to remove and free space?

Is there a way to speed up a Mac (similar to de-fragging on a PC)? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.
When memory/disc comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? How should I determine what programs/software to remove and free space?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Mac Mini and Boxee as a media center

Seriously considering bying a Mac Mini to run as a media center. Has anyone some recent (2011) experiences, good and bad with Boxee to do the job?
Also, is the low-end Mac mini (2.3 GHz, 2GB RAM,Intel HD Graphics 3000) powerful enough to stream HQ movies and tv-series ?
    Thanks for any reply fellows.

Boxee has discontinued making the software available as an independent download for home systems. The goal is to get you to purchase their hardware.
Plex and XBMC are current and free to download.
My recommendation would be to download and install them both.
Try each of them and see which one you prefer.
If I may offer some additional advice...
    1) install the maximum RAM allowed in your Mini. Better safe than sorry. Not that you will or should experience any issues. It will simply save you from having to do so in the future. And far too many people run their systems with the basic amount of memory and wonder why their system runs slower as time marches on.
    2) Configure and administrate the Mini for ease of use as a media centre. Some OS and 3rd party software can and will interfere with your enjoyment of a simple media centre. Picture this, you're watching a movie on your media centre when suddenly a window pops up to alert you of a software update. I know it sounds like a minor thing but in the middle of a tense or gripping movie scene it can be VERY annoying. You will have to decide what is pertinent and what isn't. If you put the time in to administrate your Mini before regular use as a media centre you'll be happier in the long run.
    3) Speaking of administration, you may want to consider using Little Snitch. Buy, install and configure it so that your system is kept safe and any incoming/outgoing connections are established before running the media centre. 'Nuff said.
    4) If you have an iPad. iTouch or iPhone you can download remote control apps for your media centre. Some are free and some will come out of pocket. You may need to manage minor settings on both the Mini and your remote (iPhone, iPad, etc) before you can use the app. It's a lot easier than running up to the Mini's mouse & keyboard each time you want to watch a movie (example). You can set up more than one handheld device at a time so that you, your spouse, roommate, children, etc can control the media centre application.
    5) This one applies to all computers: invest in external storage devices. For me, I have 2 Terabyte hard drives connected to my Mini Media Centre. This allows me to store my movies, music and pictures external to the Mini safely. The second Terabyte hard drive acts as a backup to the first one in case (God forbid) something happens to the first one. This isn't paranoia. Just good data management and security.
I realize that all of this seems like a lot of work but it's not. Actually considered writing more but I think you get the picture. A little work upfront will make your Mini Media Centre experience a joy.
    Hope this helps.

  • Trouble with multi-media docking station

I have used my multi-media docking station every night since I got the phone in September. Last night I put my phone in and went to sleep only to wake up at 5 and realize that its not charging.
I took the phone off and put it back on and it still won't charge. After several tries I got up and got my usb charger and my phone charges fine on it.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks

Did you try taking the plug out of the back of the docking station and then reinserting it. Maybe it was knocked loose.

  • UPDATE ON CREATING AND SYNCING RINGTONES

    There is a link...
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3792
to create and ringtones using iTunes 10. This video, be it helpful, is completely out of date. The interface is completely out of date and basically useless. So I am reaching out to any iphone users, is there is a better reference to create ringtones and syncing them to the latest Ip5s utilizing the latest iTunes 11 and higher?
I am in need of specifics of why the conversion from .mp3 to .m4r doesn’t work as prescribed per the Cnet tutorial video (see link below)…
    http://cnettv.cnet.com/create-free-ringtones-itunes-10/9742-1_53-50093086.html
…,that is still floating around on the apple site as a reference tool, how the simple drag and drop option does not function the same in the later versions of iTunes 11 and later. Any assistance would be greatlful.

    DIY version
    1. Select a title (.mp3 or .m4a) in your iTunes Library
    2. Do File > Get Info on selected title (Windows do Edit > Get Info)
    3. In the dialog choose Options tab
    4. Set Start Time and End Time (no more than 35 secs otherwise won't work)
    5. Close dialog.
    6. Now control click the title (right click) and choose Create AAC Version
Note: If you don't have Create AAC version, switch in menu File > Preferences...(Windows do Edit > Preferences...) > General > Import Settings... > Import Using: AAC Encoder.
    7. When it is done, drag the newly create title to the desktop.
    8. Delete the newly create title in iTunes. <-- This step is important
    9. Rename the title on your desktop from ringtone.m4a to ringtone.m4r
    10. Drag and drop it into iTunes
    Now you have a ringtone.
Make sure it is selected in iTunes > Tones for syncing with your new iPhone.

  • Multi Media Key Board

The  multi media keys on my HP HID wireless Multi Media keyboard no longer work although the rest of the keys are O.K.. I think I did something wrong when I went into the 'properties' as I can no longer see the 'BUTTONS'  listed there. Can anybody help please.

    Hi Waren
    Adding to Tulse's helpful suggestions...
I recently created my first Keynote. Before using the application I watched the short videos from this Apple Keynote Tutorial. This short time investment helped me immensely. Saved a lot of time.
Images: you will have to import your photos into iPhoto or Aperture, as Keynotes Media Browser accesses your images from those sources. And, as Tulse suggested keep images at or smaller than 1024x768. Otherwise you may experience lag time.
When I prepare images for Keynote, I first alter them in Photoshop as PSD files using a minimum of 240 dpi. When saving, I change the DPI to 150 dpi (probably can get away with 72 dpi, however I bumped it a bit just to be safe). Then, I save as a JPG using the maximum quality setting (12). Image size is usually around 350K. Then, I open iPhoto (or Aperture) and import the images (shift/command/I keys is the iPhoto shortcut). I haven't had any problems with artifacts, however, if you do, then I also second TIFF as the alternative.
Also, make sure you are creating the keynote presentation on the same machine you'll use to run Keynote. On the MacBook Pro in Keynote, you'll set the Keynote size via the Inspector>Document panel to match your machine's monitor display size. In your case, select the Custom option and set it to 1440x900.
Lastly, always best to have at least one dry run, ideally on screen. Keynote has great transitions. The tutorial provides some good suggestions about how to use them effectively to keep your audiences attention.
    Good luck

  • C3 business cards sent as multi-media attachments

Hi, I have had my C3 for a couple of weeks and seem to battle with a number of functions.  One such function is that when I am creating a msg and want to insert a number from my contact list, I dont have this option available. Instead I can select 'Insert Business Card' but when I do, the msg is automatically changed to a multi-media msg and the contact is sent as an attachment.  My phone wont even send multi-media msg's so this is really frustrating, please help.

Do you have the option to send the card with or without image?
I don't have C3, but I have noticed in my C7 that business cards with images go as MMS, business cards without images go as SMS.
    Worth checking...

  • Download free ringtones without itunes?

Is there any way to download free ringtones directly to my Iphone without having to go thru Itunes or sync from my laptop? Droid allows you to download straight to the phone but I can't get my Iphone to do it. Has anyone found a way to do this? Using Itunes to do this is a hassle and is time consuming. Maybe I should have bought a Droid.

You can take music and turn them into ringtones for free with ringtone app. Download songs from your old CDs onto iTunes on computer then sync iPhone. After that use ringtone app then follow app directions you might sync phone to computer to put ringtone in right spot on phone. It will tell you how to after you make to ringtone on your phone.

  • Any way to get free ringtones without using a mac or itunes?

I am a new iphone user. I have a PC..with itunes on it, yet my husband has a mac with all our new music  on it (dont want to open itunes on my pc and have it download all the new stuff...satellite internet can't handle the transfer!)
anyway...is there a way to get free ringtones onto my iphone WITHOUT having to go thru itunes?

i just remember that if i open itunes on my pc, wont it automatically detect new downloads and try to add them? I have satellite internet and when i do that, it exceeds my fair threshold policy and i cant have that...
also wasn't sure if i could hook an iphone to a pc and have it transfer the ringtones properly.
EE- do you have to have music on your iphone already to do that?

  • Searching multi-media content in IFS

Is it possible to search multi-media content
    in IFS? For example:
"Find all audio clips with a trumpet in it",
or - "Find all video clips with whales in it"??
Any help in answering this would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    dw

(Hey, here's proof that I really do search the archives before posting. :-))
Moments ago, I was asked ...
Do you know if Oracle UCM has the capability to do speech recognition & transcription of audio and video files, and then make that transcription searchable?
So somebody checks in a piece of video, which presumably passes through FlipFactory on a refinery: can FlipFactory do anything fancy with the audio portion?
Likewise, if someone checks in an MP3 file, has anyone figured out how to get the content server to pass it through speech recognition and index the result?
My gut call would be to start out by passing, say, an MP3 file through some speech recognition software that produces an N%-accurate text file (before working with the content server). Then one approach would be to checkin in the MP3 & text file as the primary & alternate files respectively for a new content item: the content server would then index the alternate file, would it not? Another approach would be to create a folio of these two separate items.
Perhaps searching the recognized speech of a video clip could work in a similar fashion?
How did you solve this issue? :-)
    Thanks!
    Don

I just got an iphone 5c and downloaded ringtone maker and made a 30 second 4r ringtone and when I try to drag and drop it in the tones folder of itunes nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

If the file is a correctly formatted AAC file with the .m4r file extension and less than 40 seconds long, then iTunes should put it into the Tones section of the library and move it into the Tones folder inside your media folder.
I've just checked the current version of iTunes behaves as I've desribed, which it does for me at least.
You may need to have some tones in your library for the tones tab to display when the device is connected.
