Symbian versus series 40 handsets

I've done a search for this and come up with nothing, so excuse if this has been discussed in some way or another already. I've often heard and read that you can do far more with a symbian/series 60 handset than you can with a series 40 one. What are some of the "applications" or things that you have done or can do with a series 60 phone? What kinds of applications have you got on your phone? Where do you find these applications? How do you install them? Why do the interfaces of series 60/smartphones seem more straightforward than series 40 (for example, no screen saver, no 3d menu icons, etc)/ why do they appear to be less configurable, superficially speaking? Why do you have more camera options, (e.g. filming in night mode,) on series 60, but not on series 40 handsets? How do you find out how much your particular handset is capable of doing if you own one?
Would really love to know. Thanks to anyone who responds.

I've used both in the past and present.
The series 40 I would say is more of a common phone interface. It's primary function is as a phone and it's a damn fine interface for it. My experience of the 40 phone was with a 6230. I did find the OS to be much more stable than S60 phones. The features that I really need from a phone (ie it needs to make calls) were very slick and fast to operate.
The apps for a S40 phone pretty much did what I needed at the time. You could find JAR applications galore out there, just a lot them were games.
The S60 is a smartphone that has a closer resemblance to a PDA than a straight forward phone. It's whole interface is infinitely more customisable, like your PDA or PC would be. It also seems to have more productivity apps available for it. It also has a collection of games available as well. You also get things like Virus scanners for S60 phones because there are nasties out there written to exploit the Symbian OS.
The phone itself does more than just make calls. I think that's the key for an S60 phone.
What would I choose? I would like an S40 for ease of calls and an S60 for everything else, thus I have an S60 phone.
As for camera options, that's merely down to what Nokia want to put into their camera. The Ericsson camera phones may not run either but their camera options are very good.

    Hi,
I am stuck in a Dilema.
A friend of mine told me that I should buy the F-Secure Anti Virus...its 35 Euro for a license..and it needs re-newal every once in a while for another 35 Euro.
My question is, is this really necessary?
Are there viruses out there that can mess my phone up?
I dont have a active GPRS connection or other connection other than my PC and Laptop.
    Any Ideas?
    Much appreciated,

It's a complete waste of money - with the security model of the s60 3rd phones, the only way for you to get a virus is to install it yourself. Stay away from warez and you will be fine.Message Edited by charlesgknight on 20-Aug-2006

  • How to minimize apps in nokia 2700classic

my phone is nokia 2700classic how to minimize apps .....other nokia 2700 phones supportted this link..,please help me

    Hi Abdulhaseb,
As the Nokia 2700classic is a Series40 phone, it does not support full multi-tasking. If there were instances where Series40 has supported multi-tasking, it is very rudimentary support and I'm presuming limited to only the built-in system apps and not other third-party apps (such as those available in the Nokia Store).
If you wish to have a handset that supports multi-tasking, your best bet would be to use Symbian or Nokia Lumia handsets. AFAIK, even Asha series does not support multi-tasking. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Microsoft could win in mobile...

If Sun doesn't deal with some major issues in J2ME.
Given the current situation with J2ME, I think Microsoft may be able to pull off a repeat of what happened in the browser wars ... but this time it's the J2ME vendors that are making it happen.
Here are the problems with Java handsets (J2ME) we are seeing.
    1. The handset emulators are almost useless for testing mobile apps. As a developer you have no choice but to build and test on every handset you intend to sell for. It's not only that stuff that works on the Emulator doesn't work on a handset, sometimes it's stuff that doesn't work on the Emulator but DOES work on a handset.
    2. The extensions (for example, Camera functions) are not always standardized and are often kept secret by the handset manufactuers.
    3. Some handset companies simply refuse to support developers.
EXAMPLE: An inquiry into the camera functions on a LG Handset (for a camera based game) produced this response.
Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics. Unfortunately, LG cannot supply you with this information as it is proprietary information. Furthermore, LG does not support nor provide SDKs for our phones. For further assistance with your request, you may want to contact the service providers that carry LG phones. Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions or concerns. Thank you again for contacting LG Electronics.
    4. SUN is NOT verifying compliance of the handsets and their associated J2ME implimentatioms with the standards.
    5. Even within the standard, the VM's are broken:
I've been involved as a producer and designer of games for A VERY LONG TIME (TRS-80 anyone?) and have been working in mobile since 2000.
J2ME Portability? This must be a definition of portability I was previously unaware of. If you don't test on every specific handset, even within a family ... your code may not work. We have seen commerical products for specific handsets that failed, in many cases because the publisher assumed that testing on one handset in a family of handsets was sufficent. I can assure you that it is not.
What have programmers seen? Here's some examples:
    a. Character array out of bounds exceptions behave differently on different phones. That's right, something as simple as when an exception is thrown showing different behavior on different phones. According to the J2ME standard, the String.substring(int beginIndex, int endIndex) method throws an IndexOutOfBoundsException "if the begin index is negative, or end index is larger than the length of this String object, or beginIndex is larger than endIndex."
This works in practice on the Nokia 3650. However, on the Motorola i95cl the IndexOutOfBoundsException is thrown when beginIndex is EQUAL TO OR LARGER than endIndex. This does not conform the standard and causes code to run differently on the two phones.
    b. Nested loops failing. We fixed a problem on a relatively new phone (the Nokia 6600) by removing a nested loop in a Java game. Problem did NOT occur on the Nokia 3650. The J2ME was actually skipping the execution of the inner loop at times. The problem did not occur on other series 60 handsets.
    c. Broken memory managers. Failure of GC to regain space from discarded objects.
    d. HTTP I/O functionality is unreliable. Standard tricks such as closing an http connection to force a timeout don't work on most devices. You have to monitor I/O processes to kill threads when they freeze.
... and there's so much more.
Then there's the issue of the specification itself. Would the folks who designed MIDP 1.0 had talked to someone, anyone in the game business. If you need to detect button press you're going to be device specific. The key-codes for the cursor pad, number pad, vary from handset to handset. Yes, MIDP 1.0 has "game actions" that are supposed to abstract the phones so that you don't rely on all phones having arrow keys and fire buttons but this actually causes more problems than it solves. Example: on the Nokia 3650 a call to getGameAction(keyCode) may identify the key as UP. However the keyCode parameter may also be the ID for the 2 key. Now you have to inject complicated logic to distinguish whether one should interpret it as a "2" or as UP. Then there's stuff like trying to draw individual pixels
MIDP 2.0 looks promising, but the MIDP 2.0 handsets we have are showing the same "write once, test everywhere" characteristics we have become familiar with in MIDP 1.0
So what about Microsoft? Microsoft is all about "developers, developers, developers" ... unless someone from SUN et. al. gets serious about this, they could lose their market advantage. Programmers tell me that the mobile development suite from Microsoft works well, and that most of the I/O issues they have with J2ME don't occur in the Microsoft suite.
Here's a thought ... how about a compatibility suite and certification. That is a series of programs that test a large range of the functions .. with user interactions to insure the proper graphics and UI interfaces.
I've seen this situation before (broken implimentations) ... back in 1989 with CD-ROM on PC's and the MSCDEX drivers. We (Activision at that time) created a test suite, contacted every CD-ROM company and provided the results so th drivers could be fixed.
Now what I have been told, in regards to the KVM's, is that it's pretty much a hands off deal by Sun. Handset companies just buy off the shelf VM's that kinda work.
If you wonder why there aren't a slew of multiplayer games or network apps .. this is the main reason. I'd estimate that over half the expense in building "The Dozens"tm (Mobile Multiplayer Game) has been in working out how to deal with the "lock ups" in HTTP I/O and other issues.
I think there's time to fix this for MIDP 2.0. Sun or someone needs to create a set of rigorious test suites that really determine if the VM meets the spec, and in particular exercises the I/O and memory management aspects of the J2ME VM. You can't blame Microsoft for these problems, it is entirely self-inflicted.

do you think anybody really interrests your opinion
    about OSS java?
OOS-Java means to give control out of SUNs hands, if
a jvm is not standard it may not be called "java", so
no problem in means of compatibility there.
HAVE YOU EVER READ SUN's LICENSE? ITS DISGUSTING,
    ANOYING, JUST CRAP.
That what OSS means, not incompatibilities and
    100.000 forks.
But you are just telling everybody what you think -
nobody is interrested in. I am sure you have NEVER
read the license under which java stands, haven't
you??i don't need to read license, i know it's fine for me .. we were not talking about that anyways

  • Why no bluetooth in connection manager ?

PC Suite 6.80.22 cannot connect to my phone (6021) via bluetooth.
When I run the Nokia connection manager, I can only choose infrared, serial data cable and usb data cable.
I do not have bluetooth !
When I use the windows explorer, I can make a connection there and I can manage files (upload, remove, download).
So I am sure my bluetooth device (Trust BT120) is installed and working correctly in my OS (Win2k SP4).
In my device manager, the bluetooth device is reported as a lan device.
I already re-installed the pc suite.
My question is : why don't i have bluetooth in the connection manager ?

    Are you using a Mac?
If yes the following is irellevant...just incase..
Connecting the Phone to a USB Bluetooth Dongle. Using PC Suite.
Yesterday, I stayed up all night to figure this out. I called nokia support to see what they can do, and apparently the new drivers from Sitecom (the BT adaptor that I use) creates a "Cloak" over the Microsoft ones. (This is only if you have SP2!!)
    Required for these steps:
~PC Running Windows XP on Service Pack 2. (how do I know if I have Service pack 1/2? Go to Start > Controll Panel > Classic View (on the top left corner, or if you already are then ignore this) > System. In system it will say which serivce pack you are running.
~PC Suite version 6.80.22 or later.
~Bluetooth Adaptor + Drivers for it
    ~Nokia Phone supporting a bluetooth In/Out connection.
~Patience (this may take half an hour depending on your PC Spec) (Took me 15 minutes)
So here is what I did:
First of all close all programs that you dont need running.
Start > Controll Panel > Add Remove Programs > Sitecom drivers
Remove ALL Sitecom (or which ever company's you use).
    Reboot Computer.
Next put the CD/Floopy in the PC or folder that you downloaded have ready on your desktop, containing the drivers required for your adaptor.
If a autorun comes up cancel it.
Plug in your bluetooth adaptor to a permanent usb port! The port you plug it into will be the only and only port that you can run bluetooth from, dont ask me why. So use a good safe place. (I put mine in the back of my PC, not the front.)
Windows will now say that it has found new hardware. It will ask you if it can search the internet for drivers, click > Yes This Time Only.
It will search and wont find anything.
Now it will ask you if it can search for drivers on the PC, click : Yes, and tell it where the drivers are located, CD/Floppy, Folder. eg: E:\Sitecom/drivers/XP
Let it install. It will finish, then suddenly re-open.
Run the same step as above again. (dont ask me why..it just installes some more drivers.)
Finally it will finish and say that your software is ready to be used.
DONT TRY TO USE IT! THE SOFTWARE REQUIRED ISNT RUNNING YET. DONT RUN PC SUITE EITHER! DONT QUIT PC SUITE, AND DONT TRY TO USE THE CONNECTION MANAGER.
    REBOT the PC.
Now when you go into PC Suite > Connection Manager, you should find a new connection. In my case:
    Bluetooth (Sitecom)
and the old bluetooth connection looks like this:
    Bluetooth (Microsoft)
The connection is very fast and stable. You can browse the phone as if it is cable connected which is awsome. Transfer speed depends on your adaptor, but it averages between 1 - 3 Megabites Per Second.
Hopefully this works for you too!
    Good Luck,
    Tal

  • How do I install a JAD & associated JAR file on a ...

    Hi all,
I have a Nokia 6288 which I would like to install a signed application in the form of a signed JAD and accompanying JAR file.
I need the JAD because it is a signed application, and I need the phone to recognise this because the application accesses user data from the memory card.
    I have tried:
    1. Using PC Suite. It does not recognise JAD files.
    2. Copying the signed JAD & the JAR file onto my memory card. The phone does not recognise JAD files. I can use the JAR file fine but it isn't fully functional.
    3. Installing the JAD file from a WAP service by pointing my phones web browser directly to the JAD file online. It downloads and installs, but again, fails to be fully functional.
So at the moment I am stuck as although I can install the JAR by itself, the application is then not signed, and will not work because it cannot access the memory card.
Basically, how would I install a signed application (JAD & JAR) onto my Series 40 handset?

Since my last post I have been discussing this issue with commercial application developers and have been experimenting with various applications.
Firstly, let's make the JAR/JAD situation absolutely clear. Some, but not all, applications unquestionably require the JAD file as a part of the installation process. If the application is a "signed" application then the security authorisation is contained within the JAD file, not the JAR file. The JAD file is created from the JAR file and contains security verification information that is separate from the JAR file and which enables the application to signed as kosher.
The Nokia PC Suite Application Installer does not need to show you the JAD file. The JAR file is sufficient. If you install the application from a folder on your PC that contains both the matching JAR and JAD files then Application Installer will correctly install the application from both the JAR and JAD files. If the folder ONLY contains the JAR file then it will only install from the JAR file. I have proved this.
So, if you cannot get the application to work then the reason is not the installation process. The reason is far more likely to be that you are trying to install the application on a branded handset rather than on a standard Nokia handset. Some service providers heavily modify the base standard software that Nokia installs on its vanilla handsets and these modifications may well include changes to security authorisation rules that will prevent many applications working on handsets that they sell.
I am in dispute with one such as we speak. I will not name them right now but if I am unable to achieve a satisfactory outcome then be assured I will let EVERYONE know. Thank God for YouTube.

  • Nokia Communication Centre cannot find my SMS/MMS

    Hello
I currently have a Nokia n70, which I am replacing with a new model. However.
No Nokia software can find my sms/mms messages so I can take a backup of them.
Latest firmware version on the phone:  v 5.0705.3.0.1
    Latest version of PC Suite.
    Windows 7 RC.
I can sync my phone with windows and everything works perfectly. (Contacts, notes, etc etc)
When I open Nokia Communication Center however, It just says: "getting messages" 0% (translated to english, so might differ) And then it just dissapears...
Nokia Photos just finds my photos and videos. But no texts..
When I try to take a backup of the messages (Everything else works just fine) I just get a "!" And nothing is backed up.
I can enter my sms and mms just fine on my phone.
The problem has been there for a while, but I have basically just ignored it. Since I was using the phone after all, and didn't really miss them. (In other words, same thing happened with Vista / Xp, so I doubt the reason is that I am using Win7)
I have ~2000 sms files, and ~50 mms files.
I am getting pretty desperate and willing to try anything. Quite a few of the messages are very personal and dear to me, so I would do anything to save them..
Maybe some application which can save messages in a .csv file?
    Anything
    Best regards.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi. I had the same problem with my N70.  This solved it (Nokia FAQ site (Australia) for PC Suite). Just follow the 5 steps listed and everything should be fine:
Q: Sending of short message with Nokia Text Message Editor fails.
    A:
Check the connectivity between your phone and PC. If the connection is fine, and other PC Suite applications work without problems, check your phone's operating system (ISA or Symbian) from www.nokia.com or from the phone's user guide.
If your phone's operating system is ISA (Series 40), check that your message settings are correct. Contact your local phone operator for more information.
If your phone's operating system is Symbian (S60, Series 80 or Series 90), check that the PC Suite Support file is installed in your phone. The PC Suite Support file is an add-on application for PC Suite usage with contacts and messages. You can check it from the phone's application list. See your phone's user guide for more information. In your situation, the PC Suite Support file might be corrupted or too old for the PC Suite version you are currently using. Do as follows:
    1) Disconnect the phone from the PC.
    2) Uninstall the PC Suite Support file from your phone.
    3) Reconnect your phone to the PC with the Get Connected wizard (on the PC Suite main window).
    4) PC Suite detects that the PC Suite Support file is missing and advises you to install it.
    5) Follow the instructions on the phone's display.
    Cheers.

Instinctively, you are right. However, Nokia was never able to do that. When they introduced Symbian/S60, Series 40 was much more mature in many regards. When they introduced Maemo, Symbian was much more mature in many regards – and now with Windows Phone it is not even the fault of Nokia anymore. There you go …
