Symbios SCSI card working/not working with KT4

Excuse me while I blow off some steam first... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHH HHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, that helped. Now I can talk rationally (well, as rationally as I'm able to at 12.30 A.M. after spending a full afternoon with my head inside a computer case). I took my home theater computer to MSI when the KT3 UltraARU came, and since then it has been a sometimes tense, but most of the time good relationship, with a bunch of sound cards and a jump to the KT4. Then I got tired of having the KT4 Ultra version without built in LAN, so I found out I could use the one I had in my server (where I don't need that many PCI cards so I can use a PCI network card). And today the wonder arrived: one KT4 Ultra FISR (or something like that - gigabit lan, firewire, bluetooth ready and serial ATA RAID), plus a brand new AMD XP2600 Plus with a 333 bus for 166 FSB. And I took great care mounting it, for once tidying up all cables, securing good airflow and even cutting two blowholes in the top for good measure, since I knew that the 2600 runs a bit hotter than my old 1800. Then in with all the cards I had used on the former KT4 (from the top: Radeon 9500, Audigy Platinum EX, Live! Value, Pinnacle PCTV Rave, one free PCI slot and finally a ultra SCSI card at the bottom), and I was ready to go. Or so I thought... So what happened? Wel, everything seemed to fire up at first, but it got stuck on the green LEDs on 1 & 3, which should be where the graphics card starts to send messages to the screen. And it got stuck. And stuck. And even after a full BIOS reset (just in case somebody had tested this board and made a wrong setting) it got stuck the same place.
So on to the usual suspects, then. First the memory. Out with the new stick and in with the one I used in the predecessor, which had been working earlier today. No change. OK, then it had to be the CPU. Out with the 2600 and in with the 1800. Nothing. So it had to be the graphics card, then. Out with the 9500, in wich an older ATI Radeon VE. Nothing. But since I'm methodical I simply cursed at the wife and kids, kicked the dog and relieved myself in the neighbours flower bed before I started the next phaze. And I got a hit on the first attempt. As soon as the SCSI card was out, everything functioned. I got into the BIOS, changed everything to what it should be and restarted the PC. Worked like a charm. I even had my two harddisks on the IDE 3, like I have told you before. No problems there. So in with the SCSI card, and nothing.
I know this card works, or at least that it was working earlier today. And nothing had happened that should damage it. So this weekend, when I change mobo in my server (if I do that tomorrow my wife will call a divorce lawyer - one night inside a PC is barely tolerable, two nights in a row is marital suicide!) I'll test it on the "old" KT4 again. My bet is that it works. What can this be? The only difference I was able to see between the boards (except for the firewire and gigabit lan) was that it had a newer BIOS. I think I was on 1.1 on the former KT4 while this arrived with 1.2. Can this be it? I thought BIOS upgrades were to fix problems, not introduce new ones...
Can anybody give me a pointer here? I'd really appreciate it since this SCSI card runs the DVD ROM inside my home theater, and it would be a full retreat to even think about having to open the door to the server room to change DVDs!  8)

Mastiff,
If you limit your troubleshooting options, then you were limiting the chance for solving your problem.   The diff slot suggestion is still opened for you.
4. Take out all other PCI slots, let only SCSI card alone.
You only need to make sure it can BOOT right? Don't worry about messing up Windows configuration of your PCI cards. Just put them back if you've tried all possible slot configurations.

  • SCSI Card work with OSX 10.4 ?

Anybody know if the ATTO PCI SCSI card will run on OSX 10.4.10 (in my Dual 2.0 G5)
They're closing out their stock of this particular card right now and the price is good.. but only if it works. If not, I've got a very nice 68 pin SCSI LaCie drive that will become a boat anchor.

I have been running a Dual 2x2.0 GHz G5 with an ATTO UL4S (PCI-X) for the last two years, including the recent software update to Mac OSX 10.4.10. I used it to drive an Imacon film scanner, and it has worked without a hitch.
Last week, I upgraded the G5 to a Mac Pro, which required the newer UL5D (PCIe) card. This would not recognise the scanner at first, but ATTO technical department were absolutely on-the-ball, and sent an e-mail with files and instructions to "roll back" the firmware to an earlier version that was better for my particular scanner. It now works perfectly.
I would therefore recommend either the UL4S or the UL5D – whichever suits your computer.

  • Can a PC ATI X1600 XT AGP card work with my MDD..

Can a PC ATI X1600 XT AGP card work with my MDD?

I have a friend that made the mistake of buying a (new) non-Mac edition ATI card. Not the card you've specified, this was a few years ago, but everything worked for him, with OSX. His biggest issue was the loss of the ADC connection on the card, getting DVI connectors only instead. That means a trip to Apple to get an ADC-DVI converter, mine was about £100 for my second display. My friend payed slightly less. At the end of the day, it would have been cheaper for him to pay the £30 extra for the Mac edition.

  • Will an onboard garaphic card work with the lates version of photoshop or do I have to have a dedicated graphic card

Will an onboard graphic card work with the lates version of photoshop or do I have to have a dedicated garphic card

Most likely you should be fine.  Some of the early i7s might not support it (did the first i7 core have integrated GPU?), but any of the last couple are fine.  The nice thing is, that you can always add an aftermarket GPU if you need to, so give it a shot.
I have a Haswell i7 (4770k) in my desktop PC, and it's more than enough.  I did a lot of research when I built my PC and my conclusion at the time was that a GPU doesn't offer a sizable performance boost unless you buy a really nice GPU ($400+).  The integrated GPU can run all the functions of CS6.
My laptop is an older i5.  Not sure which, but I think Sandy Bridge.  I can notice the difference in process times between the integrated GPU and discrete (AMD).  But only on certain heavy filters and when working with big composites (~2 gb files).  But that's an i5 and and older one.  That said, the integrated GPU is far more stable, so I usually just put up the lag instead of having the AMD GPU crash my computer.

  • Powerbook 1400 do any wireless PC cards work with it?

Hi I have a Powerbook 1400 (most of you know that by now!) anyway I just got it more RAM (it now has a total of 48MB) and installed OS 9.1. Ive been seeing wireless PC Cards on eBay real cheap for only 10 bucks Buy it Now. Will these cards work with this powerbook? And is it true that the PB 1400 only supports 16bit PC cards?
    Thanks

    Apple Rules
Yes. It is true that the 1400s are 16-bit NuBus machines. Internally, they lack any means of 32-bit translation, and it cannot be added. Their only means of 'wireless' communication is through the IR port, and that is not easily adapted to your purpose. They are capable of ethernet 'wired' communication through an internal NIC, or a NIC PC card in a PCMCIA slot. And that is it.

  • Will ATI Radeon HD 5800 card work with Premier Pro CS5 Mercury engine?

    Hi There:
I've been using Premeier Elements 7 for the last 2 years and am about to buy Premeier Pro CS5. But having read the video card requirements I'm confused.
Will my video card work with PP CS5 and the Mercury playback engine? My card is the ATI Radeon HD 5800 with 1 gig memory?
The dealer specifically sold me that 18 months ago so I would be able to move to Premiere Pro with no problem. I have an Intel Core 17 with 10 gigs of ram and a great ASUS motherboard.
    Thanks,
    Rudy

    Hi Harm:
Thanks for the reply. I checked my RAM and in fact it is 12 gigs. I got it put in 18 months ago when I bought the system. I had to use Windows XP back then. Anyway, I now need to change to Windows 7 and Premiere Pro.
I had no idea back then that I was buy the wrong video card for Premiere Pro.
I am not familiar with the terms you and the other two respondants have used in your replies, and I have no idea what it means that my system will run 10 times slower than if I had a NVIDIA, whatever it means it sounds bad. Which is really too bad because I spent a small fortune buying one of the fastest card available at the time.
What do you suggest I now do?
    1) Just use my system as is? It sounds like my performance will be terrible, so should I really go this route? I will be editing MPG2 codec from a Canon XF100 shot at 50 mbps.
    2) Should I try to sell off my ATI card and buy one of the recommended cards?
    3) Should I just go to the Sony Vega Pro systems?
Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Rudy

Yes, provided they have at least 1 GB VRAM. See for instance http://ppbm5.com/MPE%20Charts.php or http://ppbm5.com/DB-PPBM5-2.php
Select Video Card / GeForce 600 Series and sort on the column header. There are no 640 cards yet.

  • Will this SCSI card work in a 2009 Mac Pro?

I'm a bit confused about the differences between a PCIx and PCI Express.
Will this SCSI card work in a 2009 Nehalem Mac Pro?
    http://reviews.cnet.com/i-o-cards/atto-expresspci-ul4s-storage/1707-3019_7-30199 659.html
    Thanks for your help.

ATTO does make a PCI-e SCSI card. But it is this (much more expensive) high performance card:

Spending $US500 to run anything but a High-performace Hard drive or Array makes no sense. If you have ONE modest speed device to run, look into the Ratoc Firewire to SCSI adapter:

  • DAQ card works with NIDAQ test panel but not with VB app/Component works

I am seeing this problem with 2 different DAQ cards. The card works fine with the NIDAQ test panel, but acts like the return lead is lifted with my VB app. The plotted signal appears to be little more than noise. Channel scan is internally triggered; that apparently works fine. The VB app is running in this configuration successfully in other areas, and I fixed this problem once by swapping cards. Currently, I lack a spare, as my "spare" is showing the same symptoms. Any helpful hints?
    Card type: AT-AI-16XE-10
    Configuration: Double-ended input, +/-10V range
    Running: VB6, NIDAQ 6.1, ComponentWorks Std. 2.0.1, Windows NT 4.0 SP5

I upgraded to NI-DAQ 6.8.1 (with patch), but no joy. The upgrade went smoothly, the card was recognized and I was able to set the resources without a problem. The test panel works fine looking at the actual signal on the target system: slowly varying DC between 0-5 V or so. My app works fine also, except that it behaves as though the A/D is not connected to anything: noise between .05-.1 V or so. I swapped DAQ cards between the test system and my development system. The problem appears to be in the test system, not on the card. Another test system, identical except for (now) the version of NI-DAQ, works fine. I'm stumped!
BTW, why are there 3 DMA channels listed in the configuration for this DAQ? Do all 3 need to be assigned? I've run some systems
for years with only the first 2 assigned.

  • Vid card works with adapter, not directly

I have two monitors available: an old CRT that has VGA connector, and a new Dell E228WFP 22" LCD that has both VGA and DVI connector. My card is ATI Radeon 9000 Pro (DVI and ADC ports). The Dell has worked perfectly for almost a year. The problem began when I wanted to add a riser under the Dell. With the Dell connected and computer on showing perfect video, I disconnected the DVI cord, put the Dell on the floor, put the riser on the desk, put the Dell on the riser, and connected the DVI cord. No video. I have done this type of maneuver a hundred times in the past with various computers and monitors. There is never a glitch unless the resolution is not correct. I can't believe that simply disconnecting and reconnecting the DVI cord will damage a video card. I reset PRAM, no video. I connected the old CRT with a DVI to VGA adapter and it worked great.
Thinking the Dell's DVI cord may have gone bad, I connected the Dell by VGA cord to a PC that has only VGA connection (typical of office PCs). The Dell worked great. I called Dell and asked for a replacement DVI cord. They took a stubborn attitude and insisted on replacing the entire monitor and all its accessories with a refurb monitor. The next day they arrived and we connected the new monitor using the new DVI cord and no video. They tried the monitor on the PC via VGA cable and it worked great (of course -- I already knew that).
Since the card works great with the old CRT plugged into the card's DVI port using a VGA to DVI adapter, does that mean my card is till good? I suppose their can be some difference in the pin out of the adapter and the DVI cord. Is that what I am experiencing, a card that has no video through a normal DVI cord but has video through an adapter?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I had already reseated the card. There are no bent pins in the connector either on the card or on the cable to the monitor. I even had Dell replace the monitor and the replacement came with a new signal cable. The problem remained.
I finally solved the issue and it is important that all of you at Apple add this step to the troubleshooting list for a Mac with no video:
I restarted holding option (could boot to an OS X install disc, too I'm sure). That resolved the issue immediately. It seems that the hard drive's OS X auto-adjust feature for the resolution did not work. Booting to the Startup Manager (doesn't load the OS X from the hard drive) defaults to some predetermined setting that is display-independent. Then all I had to do was press Return and it has been well since.
It is interesting (and annoying) that resetting PRAM did nothing to resolve this while booting to a non hard drive video input did.

  • Wmp 11 pci card work with WPA encription?

I just purchased a new 54G wireless access point since my new laptop (with Vista) doesn't seem to want to give "full connectivity" when using WEP security activated.
I now use WPA and the laptop hooks up fine to the new access point.  My problem now, is all my other wireless computers have the older wmp 11 pci cards, and I don't see anywhere in the setup where I can select "WPA" security so they can see the new access point.
Is there a way that they can work with this new access point with WPA?

I have a WMP 11 2.7 - I know for a fact it supports WPA2 because I am connected to the net using it and WPA2 right now.
I knew it had to work cos I got it working under Ubuntu linux using this
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1071920&mode=linear
    very helpful guide.
Could not however get the damned thing to work on windows using any of the drivers from this site. So I went back and had a look at the linux guide and found a simple solution. Download this driver
    http://sidulus.textdrive.com/bcmwl5sys.zip
Go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\bcmwl5.sys rename the driver there to bcmwl5.old.sys and unzip the new driver to that location. Restart. Hey-presto you should now be able to connect to WPA and WPA2 networks.
I think this will probably only work for the 2.7 version as that is a Broadcom chipset.
You know what really bugs me tho? I shouldn't have to be telling you to do all this, I shouldn't have to do it myself either. Why the hell does this card not connect to WPA with the drivers supplied on this site?!?!?

  • Will Quadro 1000N card work with Mercury Playback Engine?

The NVIDIA Quadro 1000M graphics card isn't listed as a recommended graphics card for running Premiere Pro CC 2014. Does anyone know if it will work with MPE?

Not what I would recommend at all. There are far to many laptop solutions out there with Geforce 800 series chips and 900 series mobile are coming very soon.

  • Anyone know if the StarTech Express eSATA card works with 10.6?

Hi - maybe a bad assumption, but according to StarTech, their eSATA ExpressCard works with 10.4 and 10.4 - so I assumed it would work with 10.6. The model number is ECESATA1.
My original MacBook Pro recognizes the card because I see the icon in the top bar - however none of the two eSATA drives I've tried to connect get recognize or can be accessed via Finder or Disk Utility.
I verified that the drive, cable, and card works because I verified on a Windows XP machine.
StarTech's support is not open this weekend and nothing definitive via Googling - so I thought I'd ask here.
    Thanks

There are Mac drivers buried in the folders of the updated drivers online - I thought they were only Windows drivers.
    Duhhh..

    Hi John -
I am about to buy a StarTech duplicating dock, but finding out which card will work with it through my expresscard slot is a nightmare.
Are you using the card that has two ports on it, and so has one drive per port, or are you using Port Multiplication to have two drives through one port ?
I want to get this one, which I think is the same one you are using:
    http://www.startech.com/product/ECESATA1-1-Port-Flush-Mount-ExpressCard-34mm-eSA TA-II-Controller-Adapter-Card
Startech support tell me to download the new driver from silicon website, but I still read threads which say there is a problem with it.
Its the PMultiplication feature that is essential for what I need.
Your experience and also driver that you are using would be very helpful before i blow £300 on kit that isnt going to work properly !
