Symbols/WinXP Common Library files in Fireworks CS3

I went into Common Library and into the WinXP to pick a few
symbols of a textfield and buttons, because I was going to layout a
design with form. But when I double click on it and edit the symbol
and make it change and click "done" it wont update the one on the
page. And besides I shouldnt have to edit the instance only a copy
of it. I'm sure symbols work like they do in Flash, so it wouldnt
be a good idea to edit the master anyway, even though its
associated with my PNG file. But even when I edit it, it wont show
the changes.

What are you trying to edit? Most of the editing is done via
the Symbol
Properties panel. If you are trying to scale it, you do not
need to
double click, just use the Transform tool.

  • PSD File Assiciations Fireworks CS3

    Hi
Having lots of problems with Fireworks CS3 on PC (XP). Most
of these issues I can live with but the main problem is that I just
can't get it to associate with PSD files. After trying to do it
manually, the Fireworks icon shows on PSD files but when I double
click on the image icon it tries to open in Acrobat. When I
uninstall Acrobat it tries to open in Dreamweaver. When I uninstall
Dreamweaver it tries to open in an image viewer I have installed.
If I try to open it manually by going through the Folder
Options (or right click "Open With") route & click on
Fireworks.exe, it still tries to open in other applications
(Acrobat then Dreamweaver etc). Fireworks never shows in the list
of "Recommened Programs", so I need to browse for it.
Thanks for any help (Adobe & MS support could not help).

Can you not simple select it in File Type and choose
Fireworks and choose always use this program? That should work.

  • Symbol Insertion from Library file

I can insert Symbols from the current document via script.  Is there a way to insert a symbol from a symbol library?

Thank you Carlos, I hadn't thought of just opening the file and extracting the information.
It's amazing at how focused we get.
    I appreciate your help.

  • Fireworks CS3 & Illustrator CS3

I'm not sure if this is more an Illustrator problem or a
Fireworks issue, but since I can post here but can't log into the
    Illustrator forum, I'll start here.
I have illustrations created in Illustrator. Black and white
images, and I want the white to be transparent, or rather see-thru
since I don't mean transparency as in opacity. What I want is for
the background to show through the "white" portions of the black
and white illustrations. So, if you have a black circle with a
white triangle in the middle, and put it on a green background, the
black circle will be black and the "white" triangle will be green.
Hopefully, that clarifies what I am trying to do.
So, in Illustrator CS3, I take that illustration and use
"exclude" and "expand" to apply it to the illustration. Seems to
work fine there. If I create a solid-colored square and move it
behind the illustration, the "white" areas show the square's color
    instead of white.
Now, when I open that illustration in Fireworks CS3, I get a
black solid image. No paths where the "white" areas should be. Just
    a solid black area.
Now, if I take that original illustration, open it in
Illustrator 5.5(!), use "exclude," save and then open that modified
file in Fireworks 1.0(!), it works just fine. I can also open that
Illustrator 5.5 file in Fireworks CS3 and it works fine.
Mind you, the illustrations are more complex than a white
triangle in a black circle. But, if Illustrator 5.5 and Fireworks
1.0 can handle them, the CS3 versions ought to be able to handle
    them as well.
Since I would expect that the CS3 versions should be able to
do the same things that the much older versions can do, I can only
assume (and hope!) that I must be doing something wrong. I would
hate to have to save all my Illustrator CS3 files down to
Illustrator 3 files (since CS3 can't save to Illustrator 5), open
them in Illustrator 5.5 and "exclude," then resave them and then
finally open them in Fireworks CS3, especially since that involves
using two Macs, since the Intel Macs don't run Classic. Seems like
I should be able to go direct from Illustrator CS3 to Fireworks
    CS3.
So, what am I doing wrong?

Found it! Compound Path instead of Exclude.

  • Common Library - won't update symbols

I am designing a series of CD labels that have common
elements. It seemed natural to have those common elements as a
graphics symbol in the common library, so that in the future a
change to those elements does not require manually editing 30
    files.
    But...
I can't get an imported symbol to update from the common
library AT ALL. Even manually using the "Update..." command for the
imported symbol from the library pane says it completes and then
DOES NOTHING to the symbol instance and DOES NOT CHANGE any new
instances of that symbol. It basically doesn't work at all, at
least not for the files I am using. I'm using Fireworks CS3 with
all the latest Adobe updates installed.
Is this a known bug? Am I misinterpreting what the Update
command is supposed to do? Is there some simple trick I am missing?
Here are the basic steps I'm using for testing:
    - Create a document and import a common library graphic
symbol. It shows up in the library pane and says (imported).
    - Drag the symbol onto the workspace to create an instance.
    - Save this file as File1.
    - "Save as" the file as File2 (File1 is closed and the file
    is now open as File2).
    - Edit the symbol in file 2 in some blatantly gauche way. Use
Save to Common LIbrary from the Library pane. This dialog requests
confirmation to overwrite the existing symbol file. Say yes.
    - Save and then Close file 2.
    - Open File 1. From the Library pane, select the symbol and
    choose "Update..."
    - Nothing happens to the symbols in file 1.. They are not
"Updated" whatsoever and remain as originally instanced, not as the
symbol that now exists in the Common Library. If I delete the
symbol and re-import it, then I do get the modified symbol... but
then thats not quite the same thing as being able to update the
    symbols in place.

I think on top of the fact that Fireworks has very limited
support for sharing symbols across files, I am also running into
    bugs in their limited implementation.
The Shared Library preview shows the correct version of the
symbol, but this is not the version that is dragged onto the
document. Plus the "Update..." function in the Library pane does
not appear to function at all.
Guess I will have to work around this somehow. CS3 certainly
seems to be way buggier than previous macromedia releases of
Fireworks. I'm constantly running into things that are broken, as
well as extensive memory leaks when working with very large
graphics. Fireworks has a lot of functionality, but I don't know
that I would recommend it to others, unless they are just doing
    very simple things.
Here is another bug I just ran into: I directly opened the
Common Library symbol png files in Documents &
Settings/username/Application Data/Adobe/.... to edit the symbols.
The symbol editor opens fine and everything appears normal, EXCEPT
that you can't change colors on graphic objects! Very very strange
behaviour. Typical of the sort of thing I am constantly running
    into with Fireworks.

  • Can I move the common library or use a symbolic link so that Dropbox can sync it?

A team of us are now using Fireworks for interaction design, and need to synchronise the common library so that the elements we use are up to date.
    1.  Is the common library the correct method?
    2. we use dropbox, and I don't think I can tell dropbox to synchronise just the common library folder (as an isolated path from the rest of the dropbox tree...) - so, is there a trick using a symbolic link we could use so that dropbox thinks the common library is actually in it's own tree?  (OSX is BSD afterall...)
We're on Mac OSX 10.7.X, running FW CS6 and using the latest dropbox for Mac.
I look forward to hearing some ideas.  The question of teams using fireworks has been raised several times since 2009, and Adobe still hasn't got a solution.  The mind boggles as to whether or not Adobe takes Fireworks seriously - I hope they do...
    All the best,
    Dylan

    Thanks groove25.
I did find that it is possible to use symbolic links and Dropbox to synchronise the common library across computers.  It does come with its idiosynchrasies though (excuse thepun).
I'm going to have a go with what this thread recommends:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20120803093247391
and leichter's explanation and walkthrough (nested in the thread) looks very helpful:
There's a subtle point that, once you understand it, makes symlinks much more useful in Dropbox.
The whole design of symlinks in Unix tries to make them invisible to programs that don't specifically try to manipulate them. So suppose 'sym' is a symlink to 'file'. If a program opens 'sym' for read, it actually gets the data in 'file'. If it appends to 'sym', it actually appends to 'file'. However, if it deletes 'sym', what disappears is the link 'sym', not the file 'file'. Opening 'sym' for writing as a new file - not appending to it - is equivalent to deleting the old file and creating a new one: It leaves 'file' unchanged and creates an entirely new file named 'sym' which no longer has any connection with 'file'.
A link to a directory follows the same rules. Looking a file up using the symlink as the name really searches the linked-to directory. Creating a file through the symlink is like appending: It creates the entry in the linked directory. And so on.
A program that wishes to do something special - like change where a symlink points - has to be aware that it's dealing with a symlink and use special OS calls for that exact purpose.
Dropbox works with symlinks *but it doesn't do anything special with them*. So suppose you put that 'sym' linked to 'file' in your Dropbox directory. Dropbox comes along, finds a new file, and sends it to its servers. What does it send? Well, first the name 'sym', and then the "contents" - i.e., what it gets from reading 'sym' which is exactly the contents of 'file'. On the server, and then later on other clients, what you will find is a normal file named 'sym' with the contents of 'file'. *There is no connection with a file named 'file'.* If you change 'file' on the system where 'sym' links to it, the changes propagate. If you change it anywhere else, the changes propagate back - but Dropbox doesn't modify files in place, it writes entire new ones. So the effect back on the original system is to break the link and write a new file named 'sym' with the latest contents - but no connection to 'file'.
I know of no way to keep a link to a *file* as a symlink across updates. But the story is different for *directories*. Unlike ordinary files, directories are normally updated in place (unless you explicit delete and recreate them). So you can do the following:
    1. Create directory 'dir' anywhere you like.
    2. Create symlink 'dirlink' pointing to 'dir' in your Dropbox folder.
    3. Wait for 'dirlink' to appear on all other clients. It will appear as an ordinary directory, not as a symlink. If the original 'dir' had files in it, those will now appear as files on the clients, too.
    4. On each client, rename 'dirlink' to 'dir' *in the place you want it to appear in your directory tree*. (Renaming only works if you are staying not the same device. Otherwise, you need to create 'dir' and move all the files.) This need not be the same on all clients, though it's easier to keep track of if it is.
    5. On each client, create symlink 'dirlink' pointing to 'dir'.
Now you have a 'dirlink' on each client, which will to Dropbox look like a subdirectory - and it will sync all the files in that "subdirectory". Changes made on any client to any file in 'dir' aka 'dirlink' will be synced to all the other clients as well. Files created or deleted in 'dir' will be created/deleted on every other client as well.
It's probably easiest to do all this while there are no files in 'dir'. Otherwise, Dropbox sometimes repeatedly syncs the same files until everything eventually settles down.
    The limitations here:
    - Some platforms (e.g., iOS) don't support symlinks. To them, 'dirlink' will just be an ordinary subdirectory.
    - Any time you add a new client, you have to go through the process for that client. Certain reset operations in Dropbox - anything that requires re-syncing every file in the Dropbox folder on a client - will require the same, because Dropbox doesn't know how to *create* symlinks - it'll just create an ordinary subdirectories.
I've used this configuration for a couple of years. You have to watch out for the reset situations and such, but generally once you have it set up, it "just works".

  • Fireworks CS3 OS X constant crashes with complex files

I recently purchased CS3 and started using Fireworks CS3
instead of Photoshop for web development. Absolutely love it. I
started having crashes, mainly on opening complex files created in
Fireworks CS3. A couple weeks ago I formatted my entire system,
starting completely from scratch, only installing the applications
and fonts that I absolutely needed. Nevertheless, I continue to get
Fireworks crashes, which appear by the logs to be related to a
    memory leak in Fireworks.
If Fireworks only crashed itself, the issue would be bad
enough. But it brings down several other apps with it. The apps are
different each time. Sometimes it crashes Mail and Dashboard
Calendar, sometimes it crashes Firefox and iCal. Rarely does it
crash only itself. And rarely does it crash all programs. It's
usually a random selection of apps.
All other CS3 apps have worked beautifully. All other apps on
the box work great. And the log is filled with stuff like:

Brian, I share your frustration. Fireworks has become
completely unstable for me with large or complex files on my Mac.
It works much better on my PC though. It has been my experience
that almost all releases of Macrodobe software works this way on a
mac until late in its product cycle.
This, sadly, seems to be the way Macrodobe works though. :(
This is a user to user forum, Brian. There's not much we can

  • Opening illustrator cs3 file in Fireworks changes color, but not code

I created a vector graphic in Illustrator CS3, with RGB. I
then opened the file in Fireworks and everything looks fine because
it's still vector. But the color is not right. It's close, but much
lighter. The RGB values are exactly the same.
    Anyone have this problem before?
    thanks,
    Justin

Fireworks does not use color profiles, so the colors you see
in Fireworks will be what the majority of Web site visitors will
see (skipping, for the moment, the huge problem of monitor
variation). Only Safari displays images using the color profiles.
I recently read a moderately controversial blog post on
setting/disabling profiles in Photoshop (comments disabled at 200),
but many people appreciated the article here:
    Best
Practice Color Setup for Web Designers
So, while your experience is with Illustrator, it's probably
the same underlying cause. Illustrator is showing you the colors
with an ICC profile, even though they're in RGB. When you open the
image in Fireworks, you see the colors without a profile.
This is one reason I like using Fireworks. I have a better
feeling about what my visitors are going to see (again, setting
aside the huge problem of monitor variation).

  • Help converting Fireworks CS3 to Illustrator CS2 (vector file)

    Hello,
I have a customer trying to send artwork that he created in Fireworks CS3 that I need to have in some sort of Vector file.
It appears that Fireworks CS3 can only save an AIv8 file. When doing this, it loses its shading and some (I believe) objet styles when opening the file in AI CS2.
Is there any insight on how to do this?
    Thanks,

  • Fireworks CS3 cant open any file

    Hi all,
I have Adobe Fireworks cs3 portable and it wont open any file. It wont open the open or save dialog. Even when I drag files into it from my windows explorer, the application shuts down. Any ideas as to what i need to do to sole this?
    Thanks

I never heard of Fireworks CS3 portable, released by Adobe. Fireworks is always installed, it can't be portable (this is not Filezilla, for example, which is very light program and can be portable).
Chances are that you run a version, created by a third party -- I've heard of Photoshop portable, so Fireworks might exist, too, but this is not an oficial version, rather a "hacked" version so that it can work from a USB stick, or any location and be "moved around".
Sorry, I think that I cannot help you with that... I'd suggest installing an official Fireworks version, made by Adobe

  • Encore CS3 missing Library Files

I have installed Encore CS3 and also purchased the Adobe Master CS3 DVD 30 day try out. On three different PCs. Running Windows Pro, tried different user types, MSconfig to turn off program when installing, you name it.... When I run Encore and look for any Library file nothing is there.. just a General Tab and no files. I called Adobe after 45 minutes, 5 different contact people I was told to do a reinstall (duh!).. I did that same problem.
Can anyone tell me how to get Encore CS3 to install the Library content files or where to locate these to install.
    Thanks
    DP

Neither does the full version. I purchased the full version this week and NO LIBRARIES
I upgraded (at least I thought I was upgrading) Premiere and Encore this week. I am close to asking for a refund since I have had nothing but issues with both.
My problem right now is the libraries for Encore CS3. You know the templates for menus and buttons etc. Some people call that content but the useless people in India call the manuals content so I am trying to be clearer.
I bought the downloaded version so please do not tell me they are on disk #3. I download 5 files and installed them. Some of them I re-downloaded and I installed twice. They are.
    - ADBEPPROCS3_ALP.exe (Premiere Pro CS3)
    - ADBEAENCC3_ALP.exe (Encore CS3)
    - PPROCS3_Cont_ALP.EXE (Premiere Pro Content/manuals)
    - AENCCS3_Cont_ALP.exe (Content/manual installer for Encore CS3 manual)
    - AENCCS3_Cont_ALP.7z (3 gig file of foreign language manuals)
I am running on an HP M8040N with Vista Ultimate (32) I of course search the Adobe site and Google and I have seen other people with the same problem. After spending 1 hour with "Tech Support" in India I was told I needed to call Adobe Tech Support Monday thru...you get the idea.
WHAT AM I LOOKING FOR...the pre made Templates, Menus, Buttons, etc. that came with the disk version of Encore.
Can anyone help or am I effed for the week-end and most likely beyond?

  • How do I back-save a CS4 InDesign library file to CS3?

    Any ideas anyone?
I have an InDesign library, originally created in CS3, but since updated in CS4.
I need to distribute this to colleagues using CS3; they can open the library fine, but cannot drag items from the library to the page.
Any suggestions would be appreciated as I'm pulling my hair out on this one (even though I've got no hair to start with!).
    Cheers,
    Martin

    Martin,
A work-around: Open CS4 and the library. Drag objects out. Drag to desktop or Bridge. Open CS3, thus producing xml snippets. Drag snippets from Bridge or Desktop into CS3. Drag objects into a CS3 library.

  • Fireworks CS3 Not Displaying Photoshop CS3 file Exactly

Ok, so I was down to start using Fireworks to do my image
optimization, in fact I was somewhat excited. I heard that
Fireworks CS3 was supposed to load in PSD's seamlessly, support the
layer styles, and all that good stuff.
Well mine doesn't. It does not support clipping layer masks
at all. The opacity and look of my layer styles do not match from
    how they look in Photoshop.
Does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong? Am I going to
have to completely change my workflow? Or am I going to have to
    stick with using ImageReady CS2?
    Any help is appreciated.

I have to say that Adobe has done a lot better in CS3
regarding Fireworks compatibility. Adobe used to be downright
hostile to Fireworks users, and now that's not the case, but they
have a LONG way to go before they can claim seemless integration.
There is still a problem with layer blending in Photoshop
translating to Fireworks. When it comes in, it doesn't always
match. The color spaces don't match, either.
Masking is another issue, but I never do my masking in
anything but Fireworks, anymore (for web graphics), because
Fireworks has so many approaches to masking. In Fireworks, you can
draw vector masks (same as creating a path in Photoshop), place an
object inside of a vector (which includes a vector with a gradient,
to create a gradient mask), group layers together as masks, or
paint a bitmap mask on a layer (same as photoshop).
Fireworks is not the same thing as Photoshop. It's become the
best of many web production tools, in my opinion, a best of app
combining Photoshop, Illustrator and Freehand. To become a power
user and truly understand what the diehards are so excited about,
you really need to learn it from the ground up. If you try to
translate what you know from any other program to Fireworks, that
will reduce the real power of the program. You'll need to rethink
how you do pretty much everything, but it really is worth
    it.
