Symlink? - MacDropAny

Hello,
I was trying to sync two Macs using MacDropAny. From what I can tell, it creates symlinks using a GUI interface but I'm not completely confident in that statement. I linked the Desktop folder on my Mac to the Google Drive folder using the software. When I went to delete the link, by dragging the copied Desktop folder in Google Drive, back to its original location, as instructed on the MacDropAny website, nothing happened. I uninstalled Google Drive and tried to delete the desktop folder within the Google Drive folder, but this moves everything to trash. Does anyone know how to remove the link between these two folders? I know to work the command line if it's easier to provide instructions that way. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
I too am getting an 'SSL error' when trying to download.
While googling I found some other download links, but all have the same problem.
Seems to me that the oopsclick website/download server is 'down' or misconfigured.
Not an Apple error.

Stefan

  • [Error in news] Please update news 2012-07-14 "/lib becomes symlink"

    Hi,
Could someone please update the news article on the front page from 2012-07-14 regarding "The /lib directory becomes a symlink"? The instructions in it are no longer accurate, and following them results in a broken system.
If you can add the following lines from the DeveloperWiki, it would be perfect:
Note: for installs that have not been updated to glibc-2.16, it will save you lots of time and prevent major breakage to do:
       pacman -U http://pkgbuild.com/~allan/glibc-2.16.0 … pkg.tar.xz
where <arch> is replaced by i686 or x86_64 as required. Add a single "-d" if needed. Then proceed with
*** INSTRUCTIONS THAT ALREADY ARE IN THE NEWS ***
(Yes, I know I should keep my system up to date, but I have servers that I only upgrade every once in a while. Following the instructions in the news usually works, but not in this case.)
    AsmundEr

On such a server, assuming you don't want to be following Arch developments like a hawk, another distribution would serve you better. Arch is not some sort of 'best for everything' distro, the devs WILL willingly break things if there's a reason to, and in a period like the past year or so with so many changes mainly influenced by upstream, anyone who lags more than half a year behind is going to be caught in the 'special zone' of having to deal with more than one major change at once.
You CAN do that. You just need to know more about it than you would if you were updating every week (Allan says he uses Arch on his servers, but then again he knows what's happening in Arch, of course).

  • Creating a symlink directory on a network share to a path below a mapped drive letter, local path, or UNC path does not work

Am I correct in assuming I can not create a `symlinkd` to a network share, local path, or a UNC path on a network share that will be accessible by clients?
    ###Mapped drive letters don't work:
    1) navigate to a network share:
    pushd \\windows2008server\share\
    2) make a hardlink:
    mklink /d test_sharedir t:\directory\
    dir .\test_sharedir
    #Directory of Z:\test_sharedir
    #File Not Found
    UNC paths don't work:
    1) navigate to a network share:
    pushd \\windows2008server\share\
    2) make a symlink:
    mklink /d test_dirunc \\windows2008server\share
    dir .\test_dirunc
    #Directory of Z:\test_dirunc
    #File Not Found
I can create a functional `symlinkd` on a local drive to a mapped drive letter or a UNC path.
    Are my assumptions above correct?
We are in the middle of a migration and have created two symlinkd to UNC paths for shared DLLs, one below c:\windows\system32\ (directing to a share containing 64-bit DLLs) and one below c:\windows\syswow64 (directing to a share containing 32-bit DLLs).
On the file server, we have had a path to 32-bit DLLs (from Windows 7 clients: s:\dll\).  I am attempting to rename this directory so that it is accessible via "s:\dll32\" and would like to create a symlinkd that links "s:\dll" to
"s:\dll32" [again where S: is a mapped drive on a Windows 2008 server].  How do I do this?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hello Mandy,
The link you sent me is for Netapp CIFS server daemon contained within DataOnTap (the Netapp OS) to follow symlinks.  I am inquiring about the Microsoft products Windows Server and Windows 7.
To gain a better understanding of the Microsoft Windows Server and client (Windows) CIFS stacks and interaction of the stacks, I have referred to Figure 6 "Server Message Block Server Model" within the following (albeit older) document: http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/8/0/2800a518-7ac6-4aac-bd85-74d2c52e1ec6/tuning.doc
    You will see the following:
I assume that the Windows Server CIFS server service must be "smart enough" to determine that a CIFS client is attempting access to a SYMLINKD and actually fill the request by following the SYMLINKD.  The CIFS server service does not appear
    to operate like this.
    1) Am I correct in my assumption that the CIFS client (redirector) and the CIFS server (server) do not following symbolic links (whether they be file or directory)?
    2) If not, how do I submit a feature request for this so that it can be reviewed and approved or not approved for inclusion/hotfix release?
    Thanks for your time,
    Matt Brown
    [UPDATE]
Note that you can use a `directory junction` instead of using a SYMLINKD, to link to LOCAL resources (source). However, `directory junctions` do not allow access to resources over UNC.

  • Deleting Documents folder and replacing with symlink - Downsides?

    Background:
I have a new iMac with the dual internal drive option (SSD + HDD) running Lion. I am trying to set up the system to have the OS and applications on the SSD with documents and media on the HDD. In researching my options I found three paths often suggested:
    1. Create folders in the HDD and save your documents there + point applications like iTunes and iPhoto to the HDD for storage.
    2. Move your entire home folder to the HDD.
    3. Replace certain folders of your home folder with symbolic links that point to the actual folders in the HDD (i.e., Documents, Downloads, Movies, Pictures, Public) + leave certain folders in the SDD (i.e., Library, Desktop, Music) + point certain applications to the HDD for storage.
After weighing the pros and cons of the options, I plan on using option number 3. Option 1 required the least "advanced" work, but had the downside of needing to change preferences in all my programs that default to folders like Downloads to the HDD as well as the good chance that I or others in my family would forget to navigate to the HDD to save documents. Option 2, moving the entire home folder seemed simple after reading the steps, but came with two main downsides: 1) warnings not being able to boot should the OS stop recognizing to look to the HDD for the user account and messing up the library and 2) not gaining the performance boost of keeping certain things on the SSD (e.g., the library file of iTunes and Aperture, files for current active projects kept on the Desktop).
That left me with Option 3, the one with the most setup work, but hopefully a good balance of later ease and performance.
    Question:
In order to set up Option 3, my understanding is that I need to create a new folder in the HDD, delete the usual folder in the user home folder, and then create a symlink that lives in the user home folder so programs reference it and seemlessly access the folder in the HDD.
Does this really work without any problems? In order to delete folders like Documents and Downloads, you need to ignore warnings that say the folder "can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X" and then use terminal commands to do so.
Of course, I plan to replace these folders with symlinks, so I think all should be fine and applications will just see the newly created folder without a hitch. I just want to be sure.
Here are some links to articles outlining the method:
    http://gigaom.com/apple/how-to-create-and-use-symlinks-on-a-mac/
    http://macperformanceguide.com/SettingUp-Relocating-Documents.html
    http://martinbay.net/how-to-move-user-folder/
    Thanks for the help!

Just a note... I've noticed a problem in some sandbox apps when trying to save a file to the symlinked Documents directory.. depending on how the app saves the file, it might throw an error.

  • ITunes deletes symlinked folder on Album Artist rename

    Hello community,
I experience a very strange behavior of iTunes in combination with Symlinked folders. I use Windows 7 and my folder structure is listed below. I have a Laptop with a 256GB SSD and instead DVD-Drive a 640GB SATA drive.
    Drive layout:
    C: System (Windows Drive)
D: UserProfile (also symlinked to D:\Username
    E: Media
My iTunes DB is about 170GB large including media of all kind. I spread the iTunes Media subfolders among several drive, because I want iTunes to start up very fast, but playing music and syncing my iPhone would not benefit from the fast SSD Drive so I don't want to waste the valuable fast space.
Now when I change the Album Artist of an album iTunes kills/deletes my Music symlink folder after completing the first rename and show the rest of the album as missing files (with the ! in front)
I have discovered that this only happens when iTunes tries to rename/move folders like it does if the Album artist is changed.
I have already tried restricting the permission to the symlinked folder to read even with deny write permissions, but it manages to delete the folder everytime.
I have used a folder junction instead also. All without joy.
The owner of the folder is the Administrators group which my user is a member of. There are several reason I cannot work a a regular user and I do not want to change that.
So did anyone experience this and knows why this is the case? I would be glad to know. Thanks for everybody investing a thought
Sorry for this text monster, but this really bugs me.
    Best regards Bruce
P.S. Maybe Apple will here my whining and look into this behavior also.

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
iTunes and symlinks don't play nicely... They work OK as long as iTunes is only reading data but get all confused when iTunes tries to write back. I recommend you just put the whole library on a drive big enough to hold it all in one go.

  • [SOLVED] Problem with symlinking and PKGBUILD

    Hello Everyone,
I have created the javafx-sdk package on AUR, and make the installation a lot simplier. But I am having a problem with the creationg of the symlink.
So I have 1 binary file "javafxpackager" in the "bin" folder that I need to symlink into /usr/bin. This is the method I am using
    mkdir -p ${pkgdir}/usr/bin
    chmod +x ${pkgdir}/usr/lib/jvm/${pkgname}/bin/javafxpackager
    ln -s ${pkgdir}/usr/lib/jvm/${pkgname}/bin/javafxpackager ${pkgdir}/usr/bin/javafxpackager
My problem is that this method doesn't work at all. The only way to me after the installation to make the symlink working is by doing this :
    ls chmod +x /usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/javafxpackager
    sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/javafxpackager /usr/bin/
In order to make it work.
How can I solve this problem ?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Luis Da Costa

Problem solved ! Here's how to do it :
    mkdir -p ${pkgdir}/usr/bin
    chmod +x ${pkgdir}/usr/lib/jvm/${pkgname}/bin/javafxpackager
    ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/javafxpackager ${pkgdir}/usr/bin/javafxpackager
I didn't know, but you can symlink a file that doesn't exist yet, and this is what I did. I use and non existing (yet) javafxpackager binary from the non existing (yet) "/usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/" folder, and send it to the ${pkgdir}/usr/bin/javafxpackager, that will be copied into the original "/usr/bin/" folder.
So this problem is solved and I'm happy
(PS : thanks @ngoonee and @Trilby for you help ! Thanks to you I found out a little bit faster where the problem was ^^)

  • Support symbolic links (symlinks or Unix's 'ln -s') in the iTunes Media folder hierarchy

As of iTunes version 12.0.1.26, iTunes has partial support for symbolic links in the iTunes Media folder hierarchy. I'd like Apple to enhance iTunes to treat any symlink or folder alias within the hierarchy the same as folders. With the Unix core under OS X, there is no clear reason to not support this feature.
Why is this important? As more of us try to use iTunes as the single repository of all media, the library size becomes larger than is possible to hold on a single partition. The simplest and most convenient solution is to allow users to move large folders (e.g. Music, or Movies) to a different drive or partition, then put an alias or symlink in the original location within the iTunes hierarchy. Users with large collections or small partitions may need to split multiple times. Other users may want to put the bulk of their media on their home/work NAS and only keep a portion on their laptop for mobile access (think long overseas flights), but not have to constantly fiddle with iTunes.
The point is not whether any one of these scenarios may be supported today though a crude hack or third-party tool. Support for symlinks would be relatively easy for Apple to implement and extremely flexible for advanced users.
This is partially supported today. For example, if you do what I described above, iTunes will play all of your existing media. The part that is definitely broken is when you try to use the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder, iTunes will not copy the file to a location under a symlink or alias. The new file will sit in the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder and iTunes will generate multiple instances/tracks inside iTunes (e.g. movies appear in the "Unwatched" tab). While there are ways to work around this limitation, they are tedious and ultimately unnecessary if full symlink/alias support is provided.

    Pete

  • [help needed] make symlinks in dir to dir script for bashburn

Hi! i start using bashburn and i think is amazing! but the only thing is that to make the symlinks to /tmp/burn is tedious... i use tuxcmd and one file at the time i select from the right click menu "make symlink" for all the files i want... so i think to make an script to make symlinks from one directory to another and then when finish, delete those symlinks... BUT (BIG BUT ) i only want to make symlinks to /tmp/burn until it has dvd5 size (4,3gb?) adding symlinks in alfabethical order throught the original dir, because its no use if size is larger than DVD size i will need to delete those files... maybe later i can add the choose option between DVD sizes or specify a custom size
Here's what i have right now, need little help & comments i think this will be usefull to many

  • How do I properly use symlinks for SSD/HHD hybrid MBP?

So, I have OS X (10.8.4) on the 120 SSD in my MBP. There's also a 500GB HDD partitioned into "Machintosh HDD" (250GB; this partition is what I intend for the storage drive) and "Time Machine" (250GB; I'm backing up the boot drive, am not doing so for the storage drive. Any remarks about this?). I don't want to dump the whole home folder on the the HDD, but I can't get the symlink commands in terminal correct. This guide seems to have the right idea, but it's not working. Example. I open the SSD (/Users/anotherwalrus/) and the HDD and drag the Pictures folder from the home folder into /Volumes/Machintosh\ HDD/storagedrive/ (Note: "storagedrive" is a folder I created at the base of the HDD). I open terminal. In ~/Users/anotherwalrus/ typing "sudo rm -rf Pictures" deletes the folder. I see it happen. Then again in ~/User/anotherwalrus/ I type "ln -s /Volumes/Machintosh\ HDD/storagedrive/Pictures". Okay, now there's an alias file in the home folder in Finder on the SSD that when clicked takes me to the copied Pictures folder on the HDD. However, and here is the problem, Pictures no longer exists. I mean, going into Finder Preferences and resetting it to show Pictures doesn't work because once you leave the Preferences page: * A) It's not in the sidebar * B) Going back into Preferences shows that it's unchecked Also, when trying to download photos from the net, there's not option to download in to the Pictures folder. Isn't the whole point of symlinks to show that the folder is in the home folder like normal, just it doesn't actually live or store data on the drive? Right now I don't have a Pictures folder in /Users/drtobin/ with the other folders (Documents, Movies, Applications, etc.). There are all of the folders I haven't messed with yet, and a white page alias icon that goes to the HDD. I thought the beauty of the symlink method of a mixed drive was that you can still interface (put files in, etc.) with the folder that pretends to be in /Users/anoherwalrus/ but really is on the HDD. Are there commands that will accomplish this properly. Wat do?

I don't know that copying them from an external would be any different than doing it internally because they are physically seperated.  I have tried many different configurations.  It won't let me erase or format the SSD so that I can clone the Hybrid to it. Which is what I prefer to do but I haven't boot from the recovery or an external and tried doing it that way.  But even then I have to boot from each seperately, what is holding me up is I've lost both product keys to office and adobe ms 6 due to the fact of not only having them so long and always upgrade using dmg's as well as upgrading os's so often.  So those programs are only available on one computer. Which happens to be on a seperate internal disk.  A slick unix script would be nice.  I am just really tired of trial and error and would like to get back to using my stuff.

  • Finding the UNC path of a symlink'ed directory

    Hi Scripting Guys,
I have multiple powershell scripts which access data files on a remote networked machine working through a symlink on the local machine. This way the remote fiile location isn't coded in the scripts, and if we decide to change the location of the data then
only the symlink needs to be recreated. So, for example, "c:\my_scripting\my_symlink\" in fact takes you to "\\remote_machine\my_data\"
In a script I am working on now, I have a need to be able to retrieve the UNC path of the remote data directory, in other words - where is my_symlink pointing to?
Can you help me with this please?
    Cheers,
    Colin

Here's my solution so far (assuming only one reparse point in the local starting directory):
    # get the remote path associated with my_symlink
    [string] $uncPath = &cmd /C dir /AL *
    $uncPath = $uncPath.Split("[`[`]]")[1]
    # get the logical disk object
    $networkDrive = $uncPath.SubString(0,2)
    $logicalDisk = Gwmi Win32_LogicalDisk -filter "DriveType = 4 AND DeviceID = '$networkDrive'"
    # replace the network drive letter with provider name
    $uncPath = $uncPath.Replace($networkDrive, $logicalDisk.ProviderName)

  • How do I get Finder to show thumbnail icons of symlinks to images?

For some reason, even when I have icon preview enabled, instead of showing the thumbnail of the image, it shows a generic JPG icon with an arrow.  This is really frustrating because I need to be able top see thumbnails of all my images at once, so I can quickly select files for acting on.  And just to be clear, all the images in the directory are symlinks to the original images.  I can't browse by the original images because I am using symlinks for organizational reasons.

I am porting an image matching program from windows, which has a similar need; to show images which are similar to eachother via symlink or  windows shortcut.
The data to show a preview of a linked image is readily available to the operating system.
There should be absolutely no need for a 3rd party app.
It works seamlessly and effortlessly under windows.
It is a ridiculous shortcoming by Apple that this functionality is not available.
(also, @barney, an alias is not the same as a symlink.)

And here I duplicate it. Please see on Stackoverflow because I'm afraid I'll not be able to format my question here right way using these forum tools.
I use Win XP and Dreamweaver. I have ZF2 project. Here its "site root directory", using DW words:
    application_root/
        config/
            application.config.php
            autoload/
                global.php
                local.php
                // etc.
        data/
        module/
        vendor/
        public/
            .htaccess
            index.php
        init_autoloader.php
    I have it here C:\xampp\htdocs\mySite
In /vendor directory there must be ZF2 library. But I have it in other directory'C:\xampp\htdocs\ZF2' and just want to put symlink to it in my /vendor directory.
But if do so DW considers that ZF2 library is outside of my project directory. For example I want to require a class:
    require_once('\Zend\Mvc\Application.php');
    But DW says:
This file is outside of the root folder of site "mySite", and may not be accessible when you publish the site... Would you like to copy the file there now?
No, I don't want to copy. I don't want to make a score of the same library in every directory of my projects. But DW seems doesnt allow to do it. It makes me to copy only.
So my question is. Is it possible to set DW that it allows to use symlinks to include libraries which are not in the "site root directory"? How to do it?
I've read this http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/setup_php.html , but it doesn't help. It has one sentence about the problem and that's all it has. It absolutely doesn't give the answer how to solve it.
However, this results in two identical copies of every file. Instead it's common practice to store project files in a folder inside the document root of the testing server, which is what you'll do in this tutorial.
And there is nothing in the tutorial about the problem.

Non-Windows browsers do not have a concept of a "trusted" site. In Windows, IE and Chrome do not repeatedly prompt for credentials because they use the user's login credentials on the desktop. Other devices do not have this capability. Instead,
you need to use something like ADFS to authenticate users.

  • Remote Symlink Folders in Windows 8.1

I have two PCs in a Windows 8.1 home group. On one PC I have multiple folder symlinks that are working just fine on that PC. However, when I map to that PC's folders, that contain symlinks, on the other PC, I'm not able to access the folders created by
the symlinks. I've tried the directive fsutil behavior set SymlinkEvaluation L2L:1 R2R:1 L2R:1 R2L:1. When I do
fsutil behavior query SymlinkEvaluation, it shows all the correct properties enabled.
However, when I attempt to access the folder on the remote PC, I get the message, "Location is not available: <folder_name> is unavailable. If the location is on this PC ... If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network
..." The problem is that I have an entire drive mapped, and the symlinked folders are just a few of the folders on that drive. I can access all of the other folders with absolutely no problem.
How can I make this seemingly simple task work? I thought, when I made the fsutil settings, it would cure the whole problem, but it hasn't effectively changed anything even though it shows that all types of exchange -- including R2L and R2R -- are enabled.

     Hi,
Location that is unavailable, your link isn't pointing to the right place, or you have a different view on another pc. Access the share and see if the path that the link references actually exists\avilable from the problematic pc. You should also put the
folders you want to access in a public folder or a shared folder. Meanwhile, make sure the connection is fine.

  • DVD burn fails on symlink

I'm trying to burn a DVD backup of a directory that contains some symbolic links to other directories, and the burn fails every time. If I drag the directory to the blank DVD, then try to remove the symbolic links from the burn folder, they actually get removed from the "real" folder! Does anyone know a way around this? At the very least, I need some way to gracefully get around having a symbolic link -- some way that doesn't involve creating a coaster, which so far is all I've been able to do.
EDIT: So, it looks like it wasn't the symlinks at all, but something more generally related to backing up the ~/Library folder, per this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/webx?128@@.68b7e70f. I have to say. I tried fixing permissions, but no luck, I just made my sixth coaster of the night trying to backup my own files. This is frankly ridiculous: Not only does the folder inexplicably avoid being burned, but it crashes the entire burn process, not at the point of preparation, but mid-burn.
Second, burning for me is slow, just 2X. I've seen a couple of recent threads on this issue, but they're with Rev B iMacs as I understand. I'm using a Rev. A, with the Pioneer DVR-KO4F. Is there any way to improve the speed?
    Thanks very much-
    -Alan

    Hi
It sounds as if it may be lack of free disk space, or lack of contiguous free disk space. How much do you have left on your main drive? Perhaps deleting some unwanted files would help.
If your drive is highly fragmented the DVD image may be scattered all over the disk, causing a buffer underrun, especially if you're running the burning software off the same drive. You can buy software to defragment it, although OS X defragments small files on the fly so it's not normally needed. Perhaps burning at a slower speed would give the drive time to keep the buffer full. Freeing up some disk space should also help though, so there's more contiguous free space available

  • I Receive Error DF015 Unable to delete symlink "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/APE/3.4/adbeapeco

    Hi,
I am having issues installing Extension Managger CC.  I receive the follwoing error when attempting to install Extension Manager:
    Exit Code: 7
Please see specific errors below for troubleshooting. For example,  ERROR: DF015 ...
    -------------------------------------- Summary --------------------------------------
    - 0 fatal error(s), 1 error(s)
    ----------- Payload: Adobe Player for Embedding 3.4 3.4.0.0 {6E6ECFC9-FE3D-4314-B937-7E25A7862899} -----------
    ERROR: DF015: Unable to delete symlink "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/APE/3.4/adbeapecore.framework/Libraries"(Seq 4)
I don't know if the permissions on the file (and contents) are correct.  I noticed that they were pointing to a user that no longer exists.  I manually went in and made the owner and groups point to system, wheel and root and everyone, with all three having R+W access.
Are these the correct permissions?  I was thinking of using Adobe CC Cleaner but I didn't see anything that mentioned Extension Manager.  What would the APE 3.4 be called?
    What yould you recommend?
    Thanks,
    Rocky

Moving this discussion to the Creative Cloud Download & Install forum.
Rocky you are correct to determine this is a file permission failure which is causing the error.  Please see Error "Exit 6" or "Exit 7" | Install log | Read, write, system file errors | CS5, CS5.5 - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/error-exit-6-exit-7.html for information on how to adjust the file permissions.
If you continue to fail with this update you may want to try applying the update in either a Root user account or a new administrator account to see if the same failure occurs.
