Symlinking instrument vi's

I use a bunch of instrument vi's (Labview Mac 8.6). For workflow purposes (I have different installations of Labview installed on my work machine and at home - same version), I want to keep the instrument vi's in a particular folder that is synced.
I have tried symlinking the vi's to /Applications/National Instruments/LabVIEW/instr.lib folder but they do not show up in block diagram pop up for instrument drivers. Only when I copy over the folders do I see them. Questions:
1. Why are symlinks not seen by labview ?
2. Any way to make this work ?

Caleb:
I am working in the same that you and I saw your questions in the comedi list
and I am trying the same. I work with the PCI-6025 and I saw that you are
working with the PCI-6023 but the installation is the same. Furthemore I have
installed the driver edaq-0.9.5 of National Instrument but the analog output is
not supported.
Now I have some problems with the installation of Comedi in Debian 2.2 but I
will resolve this problem and then I will begin to make the vi's with comedi
inside, I think that we can help us.
Please mantain the contact.

  • Logic Pro 9 will not find some EXS instruments

I recently updated to Logic Pro 9.1.0, and today tried to load a project I've been working on for a few weeks (prior to the update), only to be greeted by the message "EXS24 Instrument 'Name.exs' not found."
A few sites have suggested re-indexing my Spotlight and restarted, and I have tried that to no avail. I also tried setting the EXS options to "All Drives". What's strange is that some instruments are loaded, but others are not. If I search for the filename using Spotlight, I can see they are located on the drive where they always have been.
What's potentially unusual about my installation is that I have a symlink at "/Library/Application Support/Logic" pointed at one of the other internal drives where I store all my Logic data. This has always worked before, and I don't really have enough space on the boot drive to put all of Logic's samples in /Library.
Does anyone have any clues how I could get my project loading again?

one shouldn't move installed content from the default places
It's not that so much, it's that you must understand Logic's behaviour in how, why and what to move, as it varies depend on the content.
I for one have used symlinks with Logic (and other apps, too) for years without a hitch until v9.1.
As I've said - for some of Logic's content this always used to work fine. For others, it *does not work*. I'm not going to list all the various types of content and paths that don't work with symlinks, but it's enough, trust me.
There are several reasons why one would have content elsewhere even without such novel application as Dropbox makes possible, for instance harddrive space and simply organization.
Of course. I'm not saying there isn't. I'm simply that that in some cases, Logic does not make this easy, and it's a bit of an unsupported hack in some cases. For other content, such as samples, Logic has always been designed to be flexible and there aren't many problems moving it or aliasing/symlinking it.
Personally I have all the factory content on the system disk in the default location these days, but I prefer to have the user content elsewhere.
Me too. And I've invested some time in understanding what can and can't be moved, what works and what doesn't, and have set up my system according to this and to my needs.
It is absolutely aggrevating for Apple to overlook such a thing, or a fix to take so long
    Sure.
to read on a forum "just don't do it like that if it doesn't work"
Sure. but these help forums are to get people going, not to endlessly wallow and moan about why it doesn't currently work the way I want it to. I can moan with the rest of them, but I mostly choose to deal with it in the best way I can for the time being and revisit it if the situation should change in the future.
I'm not a coder, but based on what I've read on forums and asked a couple of coder friends, this shouldn't be the most complicated matter to make work. Many of them have suggested that it's probably only an overlooked thing in the API change, not a huge ordeal.
Yes, probably so, however sometimes things that seem simple on the outside aren't always trivial to implement.
All you can do in the meantime, is report the behaviour, and set up your system the best you can to work in a practical way. If this is impossible, revert to an older version, and hope that a future version changes the behaviour.
But I don't recommend leaving things broken and expecting it to be fixed imminently, because this may not be the case.

  • Loops and certain instruments won't download properly

The loops won't don't download as well as certain instruments.  Any help?

This is the WMP plugin: np-mswmp , so you have it.
You may be missing a codec to play that content or some extension or security software is blocking that content.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]

  • How can I re-index the instrument library?

I've got a few instruments playing just fine in GarageBand, but only as tones in Logic. I suspect that if I re-indexed the library it might solve the problem. But for the life of me I can't remember how to index the libraries in Logic.
All instruments have been installed on the operating system hard drive. I haven't moved a single thing since installation. Only a few instruments are showing up as tones - but they DO play in GarageBand.
    All ears...
    Ben

(It's improbable, but I think Pancenter may have misread you & thinks you are in GarageBand; but perhaps I am wrong & it is I who has misunderstood. Or, more likely, he does understand that you are in Logic, & is saying that if you were to use GarageBand then you would be using mini-EXS… although if so, you had of course said the same thing yourself, earlier on.)
Anyway: I take it you mean that you are in Logic, but are selecting sounds from the 'Garageband' sub-menu.
+"There is no obvious evidence that it is being played through the EXS."+ If you look at the Track icon in the Arrange window it will tell you that this is so, & the Channel Strip to the left will have a plug-in insert marked "EXS24". So that's how you can check. Double-clicking on that plug-in is also a quick way to open your Software Instrument of choice so that you can access all the available sounds directly (& edit them if required).
+"Who knows what is actually playing the instrument when I go direct through the I/O to 'Garageband'."+
You do, by looking at the name of the insert!

  • [Error in news] Please update news 2012-07-14 "/lib becomes symlink"

    Hi,
Could someone please update the news article on the front page from 2012-07-14 regarding "The /lib directory becomes a symlink"? The instructions in it are no longer accurate, and following them results in a broken system.
If you can add the following lines from the DeveloperWiki, it would be perfect:
Note: for installs that have not been updated to glibc-2.16, it will save you lots of time and prevent major breakage to do:
       pacman -U http://pkgbuild.com/~allan/glibc-2.16.0 … pkg.tar.xz
where <arch> is replaced by i686 or x86_64 as required. Add a single "-d" if needed. Then proceed with
*** INSTRUCTIONS THAT ALREADY ARE IN THE NEWS ***
(Yes, I know I should keep my system up to date, but I have servers that I only upgrade every once in a while. Following the instructions in the news usually works, but not in this case.)
    AsmundEr

On such a server, assuming you don't want to be following Arch developments like a hawk, another distribution would serve you better. Arch is not some sort of 'best for everything' distro, the devs WILL willingly break things if there's a reason to, and in a period like the past year or so with so many changes mainly influenced by upstream, anyone who lags more than half a year behind is going to be caught in the 'special zone' of having to deal with more than one major change at once.
You CAN do that. You just need to know more about it than you would if you were updating every week (Allan says he uses Arch on his servers, but then again he knows what's happening in Arch, of course).

  • Very slow load times on EXS24 instruments?

Hi everyone - I have a troublesome problem..
At the moment this only seems to happen garage band instruments loaded in exs24
When I try to load instruments from garageband i get to enjoy the spinning wheel and about 3 minutes of load time [and this wouldnt be the first stime i would have loaded the instrument]
When it does finally cease spinning it asks me to choose between the garage band samples, or dupe sampler files in self contained projects.
I always pick the garageband directory..
Is there a way to decrease the loading time?

This tends to happen when you have more than one copy of the EXS sample on your drive network. As soon as EXS sees two of a sample, especially if there is no existing direct link in the EXS instrument, it will tend to scan your whole system for any and all potential duplicates. This can take a while.
My only suggestion is delete the duplicate samples and make sure your instruments all contain path links to the appropriate samples. Bear in mind that if you store samples in the project folder, at least those should be found quickly, but it will not solve the problem of loading new patches into the project.
To be able to find and get rid of duplicate samples and re-establish the links in a batch fashion, I highly reccommend EXS manager by Redmatica.

  • Creating a symlink directory on a network share to a path below a mapped drive letter, local path, or UNC path does not work

Am I correct in assuming I can not create a `symlinkd` to a network share, local path, or a UNC path on a network share that will be accessible by clients?
    ###Mapped drive letters don't work:
    1) navigate to a network share:
    pushd \\windows2008server\share\
    2) make a hardlink:
    mklink /d test_sharedir t:\directory\
    dir .\test_sharedir
    #Directory of Z:\test_sharedir
    #File Not Found
    UNC paths don't work:
    1) navigate to a network share:
    pushd \\windows2008server\share\
    2) make a symlink:
    mklink /d test_dirunc \\windows2008server\share
    dir .\test_dirunc
    #Directory of Z:\test_dirunc
    #File Not Found
I can create a functional `symlinkd` on a local drive to a mapped drive letter or a UNC path.
    Are my assumptions above correct?
We are in the middle of a migration and have created two symlinkd to UNC paths for shared DLLs, one below c:\windows\system32\ (directing to a share containing 64-bit DLLs) and one below c:\windows\syswow64 (directing to a share containing 32-bit DLLs).
On the file server, we have had a path to 32-bit DLLs (from Windows 7 clients: s:\dll\).  I am attempting to rename this directory so that it is accessible via "s:\dll32\" and would like to create a symlinkd that links "s:\dll" to
"s:\dll32" [again where S: is a mapped drive on a Windows 2008 server].  How do I do this?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hello Mandy,
The link you sent me is for Netapp CIFS server daemon contained within DataOnTap (the Netapp OS) to follow symlinks.  I am inquiring about the Microsoft products Windows Server and Windows 7.
To gain a better understanding of the Microsoft Windows Server and client (Windows) CIFS stacks and interaction of the stacks, I have referred to Figure 6 "Server Message Block Server Model" within the following (albeit older) document: http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/8/0/2800a518-7ac6-4aac-bd85-74d2c52e1ec6/tuning.doc
    You will see the following:
I assume that the Windows Server CIFS server service must be "smart enough" to determine that a CIFS client is attempting access to a SYMLINKD and actually fill the request by following the SYMLINKD.  The CIFS server service does not appear
    to operate like this.
    1) Am I correct in my assumption that the CIFS client (redirector) and the CIFS server (server) do not following symbolic links (whether they be file or directory)?
    2) If not, how do I submit a feature request for this so that it can be reviewed and approved or not approved for inclusion/hotfix release?
    Thanks for your time,
    Matt Brown
    [UPDATE]
Note that you can use a `directory junction` instead of using a SYMLINKD, to link to LOCAL resources (source). However, `directory junctions` do not allow access to resources over UNC.

  • Deleting Documents folder and replacing with symlink - Downsides?

    Background:
I have a new iMac with the dual internal drive option (SSD + HDD) running Lion. I am trying to set up the system to have the OS and applications on the SSD with documents and media on the HDD. In researching my options I found three paths often suggested:
    1. Create folders in the HDD and save your documents there + point applications like iTunes and iPhoto to the HDD for storage.
    2. Move your entire home folder to the HDD.
    3. Replace certain folders of your home folder with symbolic links that point to the actual folders in the HDD (i.e., Documents, Downloads, Movies, Pictures, Public) + leave certain folders in the SDD (i.e., Library, Desktop, Music) + point certain applications to the HDD for storage.
After weighing the pros and cons of the options, I plan on using option number 3. Option 1 required the least "advanced" work, but had the downside of needing to change preferences in all my programs that default to folders like Downloads to the HDD as well as the good chance that I or others in my family would forget to navigate to the HDD to save documents. Option 2, moving the entire home folder seemed simple after reading the steps, but came with two main downsides: 1) warnings not being able to boot should the OS stop recognizing to look to the HDD for the user account and messing up the library and 2) not gaining the performance boost of keeping certain things on the SSD (e.g., the library file of iTunes and Aperture, files for current active projects kept on the Desktop).
That left me with Option 3, the one with the most setup work, but hopefully a good balance of later ease and performance.
    Question:
In order to set up Option 3, my understanding is that I need to create a new folder in the HDD, delete the usual folder in the user home folder, and then create a symlink that lives in the user home folder so programs reference it and seemlessly access the folder in the HDD.
Does this really work without any problems? In order to delete folders like Documents and Downloads, you need to ignore warnings that say the folder "can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X" and then use terminal commands to do so.
Of course, I plan to replace these folders with symlinks, so I think all should be fine and applications will just see the newly created folder without a hitch. I just want to be sure.
Here are some links to articles outlining the method:
    http://gigaom.com/apple/how-to-create-and-use-symlinks-on-a-mac/
    http://macperformanceguide.com/SettingUp-Relocating-Documents.html
    http://martinbay.net/how-to-move-user-folder/
    Thanks for the help!

Just a note... I've noticed a problem in some sandbox apps when trying to save a file to the symlinked Documents directory.. depending on how the app saves the file, it might throw an error.

  • ITunes deletes symlinked folder on Album Artist rename

    Hello community,
I experience a very strange behavior of iTunes in combination with Symlinked folders. I use Windows 7 and my folder structure is listed below. I have a Laptop with a 256GB SSD and instead DVD-Drive a 640GB SATA drive.
    Drive layout:
    C: System (Windows Drive)
D: UserProfile (also symlinked to D:\Username
    E: Media
My iTunes DB is about 170GB large including media of all kind. I spread the iTunes Media subfolders among several drive, because I want iTunes to start up very fast, but playing music and syncing my iPhone would not benefit from the fast SSD Drive so I don't want to waste the valuable fast space.
Now when I change the Album Artist of an album iTunes kills/deletes my Music symlink folder after completing the first rename and show the rest of the album as missing files (with the ! in front)
I have discovered that this only happens when iTunes tries to rename/move folders like it does if the Album artist is changed.
I have already tried restricting the permission to the symlinked folder to read even with deny write permissions, but it manages to delete the folder everytime.
I have used a folder junction instead also. All without joy.
The owner of the folder is the Administrators group which my user is a member of. There are several reason I cannot work a a regular user and I do not want to change that.
So did anyone experience this and knows why this is the case? I would be glad to know. Thanks for everybody investing a thought
Sorry for this text monster, but this really bugs me.
    Best regards Bruce
P.S. Maybe Apple will here my whining and look into this behavior also.

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
iTunes and symlinks don't play nicely... They work OK as long as iTunes is only reading data but get all confused when iTunes tries to write back. I recommend you just put the whole library on a drive big enough to hold it all in one go.

  • Recording Stand-alone Soft Synths & Virtual Instruments in Audition 3

    Hi People,
Have a little problem which I'm struggling to figure out.
I have been using Cool Edit Pro for several years. My set up has always enabled me to record any standalone Software Synths via my sound card. I have always had it set up so my sound card plays through patch one and records through another patch enabling me to record in the multi track editor with no problems at all and my set up records only the soft synth/instrument, and not any waves previously recoded. Instead just plays them back so I can build up my music and play along at any given time. Although this is a rather different approach to doing things, it suites me down to the ground and I'm happy to create this way
My problem has come upon whilst trying out the new Adobe Audition 3, which is based around ASIO Drivers. Because of this I can no longer run another program (Stand alone soft synth), because Adobe hogs the ASIO driver and will not allow another program to be run at the same time. I can use the Adobe windows driver for audition no problems and I am able to continue recording how I did with Cool Edit, but I would much prefer to go along with auditions ASIO drivers to make sure I am recording with the best quality and reliability.
My Sound card is an E-MU 1616 with breakout box. I have tried numerous ways with the patch mixer to get around this, for example I have tried using my sound cards driver for audition and ASIO4ALL2 for my soft synths. One of which is Hypersonic 2, and the other being SampleTank. I cannot for the life of me get my set up and running how it was with cool edit.
I must admit that although I have played around with my settings, it could be something simple I need to do that just hasn't jumped out at me yet. My evaluation of Audition 3 runs out in 20 days and I'm almost sure that there is a way to enable my set up to work how I want it to before I can go out and buy Audition 3. I'm very comfortable with audition 3, naturally. I love the changes and extra features it has now along from the cool edit days.
I have looked into other solutions as well after scouring message boards, one of which was Cycling 74 Soundflower, this sounded like it could be an answer but unfortunately it is Mac only. If Adobe did Audition for Mac then I wouldn't hesitate in going down that route...
My other solution is to have a second computer, either a modified mid range P C, or even a Mac, to act as my synth station and have my various software synths and such running on there and playing out to my recording PC with Audition on. This would free up the ASIO to be used by Audition solely. It's a long way around but wouldn't cost the earth and would be a simple enough idea to set up. But surly, I shouldn't need to go this far out to get my ideal setup.
Anyhow, I would much appreciate any advice and ideas to help me solve this problem; I will keep working at it in the mean time.
Hope my explanation makes sense above, I can appreciate that there are other ways like just going along with another program and such, but in all honesty I like the way I work and don't really want to move on, I'm more bothered about just getting on and recording new ideas in the environment I'm so use to. I love the way Cool Edit/Audition works for me and I have developed my own methods with the software over the years. Working with just audio suits me to the ground as I record and chop up my own Guitar bass and drums, along with sounds from my field recorder and a host of other methods and ideas.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi!
As long as your softsynths comes in the VSTi format (most of them do now), you can insert it on a track in Audition, which has 'host' capabilities from V3.
In the Multitrack, insert a new MIDI track from the 'Insert' menu (note: MIDI Track, not just 'MIDI').
On that track pane hit the 'Sequencer' button, and it will open in a separate window. In the pane left of the keyboard you can insert your VSTi of choice, and make your MIDI connections.
Back on the Main track pane, engage the 'L' button for Live monitoring. Actual recording (of MIDI) is done in the Sequencer window.
The usual, and recommended workflow is to keep the MIDI tracks 'open', i.e. you can edit the sound in your instrument and even the notes played at any time in the process, compiling the actual audio as the last step in the mixing.
If you kind of 'insist' on doing it the old way, you can export the audio from your recorded MIDI+VSTi creations track by track like this: Leave the Sequencer window open, make a selection in the multitrack that covers the time span you have played. Solo the track (will mute all others), and use File / Export Audio Mixdown. Use 'Master' as the source. This will give you a wave rendering of what's currently in the MIDI sequencer. Qualitywise this is better since it's all internal and digital instead of in/out of soundcards with DA/AD conversion etc.
I haven't found a method for a 'live' wave recording while you play, but there may be one...
If you purchase Audition it comes with Help files explaining this in more/better detail. ;)

  • I tried to add sf2 instruments.  I put them in the audio/banks file but they do not show up in the DSL instruments on Garage Band.  Why not?

How can I get sf2 intruments that I've downloaded to use in my GarageBand?  I have downloaded them and have put them both in the GarageBand instruments folder and the Audio/Banks folder of my Library, but they do not show up in GarageBand on the DSL instruments as they should.  I have some instruments in that category that I must have put in before, but can't find them in the audio/banks folder or the GarageBand instruments folder and cannot locate them with a my computer finder anywhere.  They are listed in the DSL instruments on GarageBand when I open the program.  Is there another library that this version of GarageBand can be using??  I have GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.4)d, which was updated a while back.  I had the previous version of GarageBand with a diffent system quite a bit earlier.  I've look in the "previous system" folder as well, and cannot find the instruments, or an audio/banks folder at all.

Mortimer,  iTunes does not know when you restore a file.  After you restore the file, you need to re-add the file to iTunes.
If you know exactly which files you restores, re-add them using File > Add File to LIbrary.
Otherwise, lre-add the folders.  iTunes has certain safeguards to reduce duplicates when you do this, which are not perfect but are better than nothing.  Start with a few small folders and see if you are happy with the results.

  • What connectors do I need for my ipad so I can connect it to my apogee duet 2 interface essentially using the ipad as an instrument utilizing a few of the synth and drum machine apps to record tracks into Logic on my Mac?

Ok, so I completely feel like this is a stupid question for those of you already in the know and recording tracks onto your Computers DAW from instrument apps on the iPad and other i devices. I can not seem to find out exactly what connector or unit I need to be able to connect and use my ipad as a instrument to record tracks onto logic. I have an ipad2 that I want to connect to my apogee duet 2 interface which is obviously connected to my Mac. I know Logic comes with plenty of drum and synth options but I still want to be able to use beatmaker, jam up pro and the sunrizer synth apps on some of my tracks. I do have the camera conversion adaptors. So my question is, do I just run from the camera adapter in the ipad into the midi port on my apogee interface? (I'm new to and still learning about midi) Or is there a special 30 pin cable I need to get that runs from the ipad into the XLR or quarter inch in the break out cables on the apogee? I did find one cord out there that plugged into the ipad and had left and right XLR connectors but my duets break out cable only has two inputs each is their own channel. Also , if the cable I need isn't midi  and does connect to the breakout cables, do I set it as an instrument or as a mic in the apogee software? Or am I completely way off base and needing something different all together. Any help would be much appreciated!
I have a fare amount of experience when it comes to recording, set up and the flow of standard instruments, using external hardware and plugins. But the last few weeks I spent a lot of time programming some great beats in beatmaker on my ipad and I want to track them into Logic. It seemed like no matter how I worded the questions when researching what I thought was and should be simple to figure it out, it just took me to answers I wasn't looking for. Thank you ahead of time. Like I said I'm just starting to get out of my comfort zone and learn about midi and the more digital side of things. So sorry about any ignorance concerning that side of things.

The new Apogee Duet for iPad and Mac, is compaible with iOS devices and includes a USB Midi input. This sounds like the perfect solution for your workflow.

  • Save Instruments In Logic 8?

Okay, so I'm kinda new to Logic and was wondering how to save instruments like in Garageband. I am not sure and I really need to know. If you don't understand what I'm saying then here it is: I want to open up the orchestral strings instrument then edit its EQ and such, then when I have what I want, I need to save it with the other pre-made instruments for easy access. You can do this in Garageband with ease but not with Logic. Someone please help!

You can do this in Garageband with ease but not with Logic.
You mean "I don't know how to do it in Logic", not "You cannot do it with ease in Logic".
Either use the menus at the top of the instrument/plugin to save it's setting (this saves one plugin's setting, and you can organise these as you wish), or you can save the complete channel strip as a channel strip setting, which is the instrument, and all plugins with all their settings) from the channel strip settings menu.
