Sympodium drawing tablet and Keynote?

Hi folks,
I've been using a drawing tablet to liven up presentations and I'm having trouble getting it to work with Keynote. In a different room, they had one (a "Sympodium" drawing tablet, which is an LCD screen that lets you draw right on the screen) and it was set up to work with the Windows machine, where it worked very well with the otherwise nasty Powerpoint. This is a fabulous thing that lets you draw right on top of slides while showing them, clearing the screen when you advance to the next slide but retaining your drawings if you go back, and simultaneously recording your entire presentations as a quicktime file.
The only problem is, I can't get it to work with Keynote, which I prefer to powerpoint in almost every respect. Has anyone else tried this, or does anyone have any info about getting this to work?
Thanks,
-mk

The features you are describing are features of the SMART Notebook software that is the underlying driver for the Sympodium. The Sympodium, incidentally, is functionally identical to the touch-sensitive SMART board, but more useful when the projection screen is larger than about 5'.
Anyway, first make sure you have the SMART software installed on your machine. Get it from www.smarttech.com; they have a very liberal license policy (as long as your organization has at least one of their hardware products, you can use the software). You'll also have to connect the Sympodium to your computer via USB. I know that in the classroom I just built, I provided a VGA connector and an audio connector for users laptops, but no USB connector for the Sympodium; that's "permanently" wired to "my" computer. You'll need a USB A->B cable (with the square connector on one end) to hook to the port on the left-hand side of the Sympodium.
I've not yet used the Sympodium with Keynote, but I imagine you probably have to tell Keynote to share the display for your annotations to show up. We're getting a dual-boot Mac Mini for the classroom that has the Sympodium; once that is up and running, I'll experiment with it.

  • Digital drawing tablets, do they work well with Illustrator, if so what brand is best?

I'm wanting to get a drawing tablet and would like to know if and what brand Adobe supports. I'm a graphic designer and need to break free from the mouse!! ANYONE?

I use the Wacom Intuos 2 12x12; very, very nice in Illustrator.  A friend recommended the Wacom way back when I went digital in '95, and WOW!; I've never looked back.  I even use it in Word.  The best part is, the tablet allows you much more freedom and flexibility in your work station.  The mouse is limited by the cord and, a wireless is more flexible, but you still have to deal with the surface's texture or lack of and the mere fact of physically handling a line sequence by clicking and moving a mouse instead of using something so intuitive as a pen.
Don't hesitate, get the tablet.  It'll boost your productivity as well.  Plus, you will avoid costly medical procedures like carpal tunnel syndrome.

Check with the manufacturer for updated drivers for your tablet.

  • Noticeable lag when using drawing tablet, streaming video, and simple games

Hi, I'm using a Toshiba Satellite Laptop model A335D-S69221. There is a noticeable lag when using my drawing tablet, streaming videos (such as youtube), and games that are not  "fast" such as This War of Mine and Don't Starve. All drivers and the system is newly wiped and up to date.  When visiting web pages if there are embedded videos it causes a whole system lag until it either asks me to stop script or I close the page.  Colors and graphics look just fine.  No problem playing fully downloaded videos. The programs themselves work just fine and the lag only happens with the above mentioned activities.  Not a virus.
Is this an issue that can be solved by increasing the RAM from 4GB to 6GB or 8GB?  Or is it an issue with the graphics card?  I suspect RAM but don't want to shell money on the wrong thing. Most of the programs say 4GB is required but it almost seems bare minimum.  Is my laptop even worth upgrading?
Unfortunately it takes away my ability to draw and makes gaming progress annoyingly slow.  Once the lagging action is complete it works ok but just repeats.

this is my personal opinion as a guy who had more than 5 pcs, 4 gaming laptops and other mac books for work in the past.
I believe it is slightly an older model of Toshiba you are using, your drawing tablet relies on your Ram but not as much as it relies on your GPU which would be the graphics card processor. So none of those upgrades will give you a significant change on things you want to do.
I would rather suggest you a newer model for the things you do with your budget than getting rams for your computer. Both of you are processor and graphics card.
If you want to upgrade, Ram is your cheapest option, but check out the slots, usually they have 2 slots, and 2 x 2GB on them, so if you buy a 4GB , you get 6. DDR II is kinda out of date with current programs and software, keep that in consideration aswell.
I do not think any upgrade you spend money on will give you the speed you want to feel.

  • Wacom Tablets and Standard Productivity Programs.

I am interested in getting a Wacom tablet and I am well aware that for Adobe type products such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash it is very useful. However, I am curious as to if it can do anything just within the OS itself, especially with Safari, Mail and basic System functions; as well as Office for Mac (2004), iLife '08 (especially iWeb) and iWork '08 (especially Keynote). Has anyone tried it out on those programs/suites? Also can it do anything with Bridge?
*Edit: I have Adobe CS3 Premium Design Suite on my system. The line of tablets I am interested in is the Intuos3 line as I do mostly Photoshop work.

I have a Wacom Intuous and for me, I have to say that in Bridge or any non graphics program, it doesn't do anything special for me. If you do a lot of Photoshop work or like to draw, you will find it invaluable. Also the Intuous line comes with a mouse, so if you have the tablet plopped in your lap, you can switch between the pen and a mouse while using the tablet easily.
If you get the Intuous, you may also want to try out the Ink application. When you have your tablet connected, it shows up in system preferences and you need to turn it on to use it. Some of the features it offers are system wide (i.e. you can write text like a palm pilot instead of typing but I would rather type). Ink does offer a couple of useful features though, you can dash off a quick note or a sketch with it.
Again, if you use Photoshop a lot, get the tablet; it's well worth it.

  • So, iDisk (great with MobileMe) is closed! Ok. I got the most expensive iCloud Plan and LOVED storing files online. Is that REALLY OVER??!! (besides Numbers', Pages', and Keynote's docs sync).. Will I REALLY have to downgrade to "free" on iCloud?!!

So, iDisk (great with MobileMe) is closed! Ok. I got the most expensive iCloud Plan and LOVED storing files online. Is that REALLY OVER??!! (besides Numbers', Pages', and Keynote's docs sync).. Will I REALLY have to downgrade to "free" on iCloud and PAY for "DropBox", "Google Drive" or "Microsft's Sky Whatever.."?!!
I could not log in to this Support Community with my UPDATED Apple ID (and this is another issue I can't believe Apple just says "NO, you CAN'T!" - deleting other (old) Apple IDs we've created by mistake or a long time ago and being able to have it all on ONE SINGLE UPDATED Apple ID - ALSO saving Apple's storage servers, etc.).
Anyway, my Apple ID for better communication is [email protected] (but I really couldn't log in here - it kept saying that the e-mail is already registered, etc. I know it, I'm trying to use it here, that's all...
So, really. Of course a lot of people don't care about the iDisk issue. That's fine, we all love and hate specific apps or software.. But why has Apple just shut it down, since it was so EASY to use (as DropBox) on all our Apple devices?!! So, we really can't upload/store any kind of files anymore and that's it?!
I used iDisk when MobileMe was still alive, and it was great to have my files from work, home, any backup (whatever we want) uploaded and synced and used in our Macs, iPhones and iPads. If we have the OPTION of an iCloud Plan (the top one, for example), but we just don't like the automatick backups for the iPhones and iPads, nor the Pictures' sync function.. Why can't we just have the SAME simple and efficient/great service of the iDisk installed in each device?!
Do we really have to go back and downgrade back to the free iCloud Option (just for keeping the e-mail) and paying extra for DropBox, Google, Microsoft, any other services?! I have nothing against them - I actually have DropBox and it works great because it REMINDS me of iDisk!! But WHY NOT just keep it simple and closed with 1 company/platform/option - Apple's iOS, OSX, etc.
That's why I decided to have a Macbook Pro, an iPhone 4S and an iPad 3rd. Generation (for example, along with other products and services such as Apple TV).. I know I'm CHOOSING to stay with 1 world, that's fine. And that's why I didn't (yet) go for a Samsung phone or another tablet.. I wanna stick with 1 pattern and I have chosen Apple's..
Just can't understand such an innovative company make such decisions (such as shutting down iDisk or not letting us just DELETE Apple IDs we do NOT use anymore).. Please, just some guidance or confirmation if that's correct: No way of uploading files others than Numbers', Pages' or Keynote's!!??
    Thank you very much!!
    Peace.

    Thank you Roger.
That's exactly what I was afraid of...
During all the time I have been a loyal customer of Apple's products and services, these have been the only 2 issues that I really can't understand (specially when we look at Apple's strategies and management)...
    1) Not being able to DELETE (simply delete or deactivate) old or duplicated Apple IDs... I have 3 different Apple IDs but only one is the real Apple ID I use for everything, with all my purchases and services (such as e-mail) related to it (Why won't Apple jus let people delet, deactivate or - at least - merge Apple IDs?! That would help everyone, including Apple when we think about costs, storage, database maintenance, etc.) - Actually, even when I gave up on trying to delete other Apple IDs, I tried to have the one I really use and have organized to use my @me.com address as the Apple ID itself (as Apple asks us to do - and makes sense, of course). But never worked. Just because I created that Apple ID with a @hotmail.com account (since it asks for a valid e-mail when you create an Apple ID, it NEVER lets me now change my Apple ID to my @me.com e-mail address - I mean JUST having my @me.com e-mail address as my primary e-mail and my Apple ID (for example, having that old @hotmail.com e-mail address out of it, cleaned..)!
    2) The other issue was this one, about iDisk. Of course there must be reasons for having it shut down, maybe the apps used by iPhone and iPad, along with the folder on Mac OSX, is way too complicated, expensive, full of bugs, I don't know. But if we decide to pay for 50GB of online storage, why even THINK about different options for files we use?! I have Dropbox, I've read about Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive, etc. But I just wanted to STICK with a single ALL-APPLE solution.. That is.. Pay the annual fee for the 50GB and just still keep any file I want on the cloud with iDisk. So, what Apple tells me is that if I have other files than iWork or PDF (and some few exceptions), I should actually downgrade to "free" iCloud and decide to PAY for another solution (organization), such as DropBox, Google Disk or Drive (I don't really know), Micrsoft's SkyDrive..
Of course there's the strategy of getting more and more people to use Pages, Numbers and Keynote (buying them for iOS and Mac OSX, as I already have and love them). But "killing" iDisk and just telling users to look for other storage solutions doesn't really sound like Apple.
I have seen so many questions here about both issues (deleting or merging Apple IDS + iDisk back since we pay for storage) that I really believe Apple should reconsider these issues or, at least, open the issue and let us know what would be the best "partner solution" for iCloud...
    Thanks a lot!
    All the best...
    Eduardo Rocha.

  • X220 Tablet and Windows 8.1 - Limited Touch drops with Intel HD 3000 is installed?

I have installed Windows 8.1 Professional on on a Lenovo X220 Tablet and everything seems to have installed correctly, although my system, which supported limited touch with 2 touch points in Windows 7, only has Pen Support in 8.1.
I have been able to get the system to be recognized as "Pen and Limited Touch Support with 2 Touch Points" but only if I disable/unintall the Intel HD 3000 driver, and use Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead.  The problem is that the resolution isn't as crisp.
Any recommendations as to what I can do to get the limted touch to be recognized with the Intel HD 3000 driver?  This one is baffling.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    The X220 Tablet's type is 4296-2WU
Also, the Intel HD Graphics 3000 driver is the latest version compatible with 8.1 64bit - 9.17.10.3517.
Update: I have also tried the previous Intel driver release, 9.17.10.3347, as well as the recommend Intel driver from the support page 9.17.10.2843 and non of them allow my screen to do Limited Touch Support with 2 Touch Points.  Yet, if I disable the Intel driver, and restart, I can.

    Troy,
Thanks for sharing your expeirences and the details of the driver version.
Officially, I don't think Lenovo provided full support for Win 8 on the X220, but as you note it (and the upgrade to 8.1) can work with some limitations.   I'll check with one of our software engineers to see if he may have some suggestions on this one.
I expect you will probably draw some responses from the community as the X220 was a very popular system with a good following.
    Best regards,

  • Need Recommendation On First Drawing Tablet (PC)

    Hi,
I am a web developer (I mostly do the 'plumbing' -- PHP, SQL, CSS) and work with art already received. I do various tasks in Illustrator and PS, such as color correction or converting a photo to a line art logo, but up until now never done much 'free hand' work. I think it's (finally) time to get a drawing tablet... as I've read some good things about less expensive units such as Wacom Bamboo. (I don't want to spend a ton of money on this until I'm sure it's something I will use productively---who knows, I may -hate- the whole concept? Or I may wonder WTF I waited all these years for.)
To be clear, I don't need it as a 'mouse replacement'. My primary need is to learn to free hand draw line art---I mention this because lots of product videos seem to stress the 'iPad'-like functions more than the actual 'drawing'.
    A couple of questions:
    1. Are there other brands/models (under $200) I should be looking at seriously?
    2. I was more focused on the bigger Bamboo... just because all the artists I've ever seen working use big $1000 ones. But I've seen a number of articles where users/reviewers talk about being quite happy with the smaller unit for real drawing. I wonder if that's true once one is an experienced user... IOW is it easier for a noob to to 'learn' to draw well on a larger tablet?
    Thanks,
    ---JC
PS: I am running one machine on CS4 XP and another CS5 --- Win7. Hopefully one can assume the drivers and all that stuff is sorted for all these combinations, right?

For my money you should really only consider WACOM products. All other tablets are inferior.
I've used everything from a 4x5 Graphire 1 to my current large Intuos 4. Never used a Bamboo though. The sweet spot for most users seems to be the 6x8/6x11/medium size. It really relates more to how you work/draw - with lager arms gestures or small finger/wrist gestures. That combined with how much screen realestate you have. I run 3 monitors and while I could get by woth a medium or 6x8 tablet, the large (roughly 12x16) suits me better.
As for features, the Bamboo feature list seems like a great starting point for someone new to tablets. But realize it's got much less pressure sensativity as well as customization options than an Intuous tablet has.
A tablet won't help you "learn to draw" but it will help with small, delicate adjustments and fine tuning that's simply not possible with any mouse, trackball, or trackpad.
Drivers are all at WACOM's site.. never use any driver that comes on CD/DVD with the tablet, they are almost always old versions. Just plug in the tablet and go to wacom's site to download drivers.

  • In Search of Vector Drawing Tablet Advice

    Hello All,
I have been using CS4 for a while now (mostly in my spare time) and have gotten quite into drawing cartoon versions of friends, family, etc. I have just worked from photographs in the past and have generally used Illustrator to accomplish this.
My results so far look something like this: http://crockstarlimited.com/blog/about/ (sorry those are the only examples I have online at the moment). I have been wondering about ways to improve my technique for this and thus my question is two-fold:
    1. Has anyone used a drawing tablet (like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-UPTZ431W-Intuos-3-Digital-Writing/dp/B001NANLOI)? If so, do you have any recommendations about what to look for or which ones are particularly good?
    2. Does anyone have any tips for this style of drawing?
i.e. Use Photoshop instead of Illustrator?
Thanks very much for any help you can provide!
    Crock

Illustrator by far. You have far more control over your drawing in a vector program. Edits are easier. You can always bring into PS later to add effects. All the digital illustrators I've ever contracted with have worked in AI without exception. The master file is always vector though they may bring an image into PS for some added effects. But the top of the line illustrators can do incredible effects in AI without ever going into PS.

  • Weird lines with drawing tablet?

Hey guys! I just bought a new drawing tablet to use with Flash. It works amazing in general, but when I tap on the screen I just get these weird... lines? It works fine with my mouse.
    How do I solve this?

Sorry, Tom! I really appreciate your help and i am not meaning to be flippant. I am using the Best Quality, 90 minutes, and i don't mess with any of the presets.
I'm exporting to Compressor like so: When i'm in final cut i go to file > export > send to compressor.
Sorry, i'm still a bit new to compressor! thanks!

  • PLEASE HELP!!!! Problem with my Huion H610n drawing tablet!!!

I recently purchased a drawing tablet which is the Huion H610N its working perfectly however when I opened photoshop cc I tried drawing in a blank canvas and Its not showing anything. I tried using the 'basic brushes' instead of my 'custom brushes' and it lets me draw and I can see it however the sensitivity is not showing when I draw using the 'basic brushes' the lines are just plain BOLD please help! I dont know why its doing this!

    Try accessing the *System Preference* panel, named *Universal Access*;
then, note the choices within it include Mouse (among other) and click
on the Mouse section to check and see if _+the slider control+_ to change
the Size of the *Cursor icon* has been moved over to make it larger.
You can check/change several settings in Universal Access; also some
of these have keyboard shortcuts which may be engaged by a user,
by accident due to random use of a keyboard. Be aware of this, since
a pattern of changes when children use a computer may repeat; as
similar keyboard mistakes (or intentional odd results) use similar keys.
    There are symbols representing keys used to engage Universal Access;
their icons in this control panel area of System Preferences should be-
come familiar to you, so when/if other odd visuals occur, check here.
Notice what the 'default' settings are, in the different U.A. panel areas.
This will help when you find another issue arise; a repeat is likely.
You may choose to set up a different user account in the Mac then have
it not allow full access to more than a few basic necessities, for a child.

  • Non-Wacom tablets and CS4 and Nvidia

I have a Trust tablet and CS4 and have experienced problems with draw. The problems have already been stated in the thread http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6c5ed/53 regarding Wacom tablets, and apply to Genius tablets as well as Trust.
As I have said in that thread, when I draw with the tablet and then select another tool, such as type, then try and draw with the tablet again, all I get is a straight line between the start and the end point. There is no such problem in earlier versions of Photoshop.
However,I have just noticed something odd. I was experimenting, trying to fix the lag in my screen redraw, drawing and typing (also see relevant thread- "CS4 lag. What graphic card will it take?") and thought I would change the screen refresh rate. After I did that, the tablet started working again perfectly, and this "fix" works every time. This happens even if I start to change the screen refresh rate, but then cancel.
Since I have an Nvidia card, and this fix is playing with the card settings, I wonder if it is all related to the obvious problems CS4 and Nvidia have with each other? Can someone else try?

Lag in screen redraw is most likely a video card issue.
Bad lines, or a lack of pressure are due to tablet driver problems.
Do make sure you have Photoshop 11.0.1.

  • Using a drawing tablet with Logic Pro, esp. for hyperdraw?

Is anybody using a drawing tablet, such as the Wacom Graphire 4, with Logic Pro? I am particularly interested to hear whether a tablet makes inputting hyperdraw data easier.
    Thanx and cheers,
    Vincent

Yeah, it changes everything — from selecting menu items, to turning knobs or moving sliders. You'll never go back... This is due to the fact that pointing and clicking are merged into one gesture, like playing a piano key takes care of selecting both the pitch and the velocity.
Be sure you get a small model though, not the big one that they use with Photoshop...
I find it indispensable whatever the kind of application I'm using, be it a text processor or an audio editor, whenever precise selection or action is required — to the point that I feel awkward when I'm forced to use a mouse.
By the way, people who are used to using trackballs feel the same — but this isn't true for track-pads.

Ever since I upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion, I'm having a terrible time saving my documents in pages and keynote. I miss "save as" and can't stand the "rename" and "move to" replacements. Is there a tutorial to help me? or can I put "save as" back in menu? Has anyone else been struggling with this?

Sure. At midnight, you have to draw a sacred circle, light 11 candles, say the incantation, hold down the option key, and choose "save as".

I have been looking all over for this and every search result pops up with "how to use iPad as a Drawing Tablet" which is what I don't want to know. I want to know if there is a drawing tablet that can function with iPad/iOS to provide a more accurate drawing and image editing experience. I know there are styli that work with iPad but I don't want to spend money on giant pens that look very innaccurate. I want to use the iPad as the display and the drawing tablet as the input.

It's unlikely to happen.  Instead, buy one of these non-giant devices:  http://justgosmart.com/stylus/
