Synaptics driver goes hectic after changing policy.

When I booted into a clean install of arch, two fingers moving on the touchpad at once just moved the mouse pointer. I updated the policy to emulate two finger scrolling and reboot, but then when I put two fingers on the touchpad, it jumps back and forth almost randomly, but one finger does fine. So I restored the policy to the default policy, but it doesn't want to go back to being stable, it continues to jump around even after the settings are the same as before. I think somehow it doesn't want to forget the new settings. I changed /usr/share/hal/fdi/10osvender/11-x11-synaptics.fdi and here's the before and after:

*maybe* related to hal update, it completely screwed up my touchpad. try to downgrade hal (and restart it) to see if it helps. I'll open a bug report later today (if someone else didn't do it yet)

  • SATA Hard Drive Goes Missing After Playing Video In iTunes, How? Why?

What in iTunes would make my 500 GB SATA drive just "disappear" from my list of drives under My Computer?
Seemed to happen after I tried playing a video back in iTunes. I thought it was Windows Vista. But, I'm not having any other problems. I don't dare plug in my ipod until I fix this. I just downloaded the lastest version of itunes since it said for Vista, but that doesn't seem to matter.
I have all the latest drivers, but I have a GeForce 8800 video card, that's not the issue is it? What else can I do here to get itunes back on track?

My guess is that you have an Nvidia Nforce SATA controller, and are affected by a known bug in the Nvidia driver. Apple mention it briefly at the bottom of this document. HP have posted what appears to be a standard Microsoft SATA driver here to work around the problem until Nvidia releases an updated driver. Since it appears to be a standard driver, you may be able to install it on a non-HP system too.

  • Can't find some files after changing drive name

I keep all my music files on an external drive, and my iTunes folder (and iTunes Music folder) on the internal drive. After changing the name of the external drive, a good number of files (not all, and probably not even most, but a lot) couldn't be found by iTunes.
I'm suspecting that this problem results from having my files stored externally and separate from the internal default iTunes Music folder, but I'm hoping someone can give me some more details about this and hopefully help find a solution. Thanks.

In the root of the filesystem there normally is a folder "lost+found", in which files with strange names are found. These are the files cvfsck has collected in the recovering of the filesystemnames. It is sometimes not possible to recover the original file name and location. So this is the only way for cvfsck to give them back.
If you think the content of these files is allright, you can rename and relocate them.

  • Touchpad stop woking after Synaptics driver is installed

2 days ago I installed the new Ethernet, WWAN, Camera, Wireless, Audio, Graphics drivers from the HP website and also the latest BIOS, and the Synaptics touchpad mouse and stick mouse stopped working, if I remove the Synaptics driver the touchpad will work (very slow), If I reinstall the Synaptics driver again it will stop working, I've tried different versions of the Synaptics driver from the HP support website and nothing, as soon as the driver is installed the touchpad will stop working. I have removed the WWAN and Camera driver but nothing happens still the same. If I reboot into BIOS mode the touchpad works fine, so it's not a harware problem. If I check the Mouse Properties there is no Synaptics tab. If I check the Device Manager it's all good.
    This question was solved.

    @brosenz ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  The first thing I would ask is what prompted a BIOS update.
Did you have an issue with your system that required you to do a BIOS update. If not do an HP BIOS recovery back to the old version.  If it isn't broke don't fix it.
    Restoring the BIOS
After that do a system recovery back to the older driver and software.  Again if it isn't broke don't fix it.
Now if you where having issues with the system that required a BIOS update and an update in drivers and the recovery does not resolve the problem.  Contact HP phone support for repair options.

  • After Windows 10 update synaptics driver forgets settings on reboot

Yes jf87, Win 8.1 on touchpads with availablity have swiping. It is gesturing across from left to right or right to left. Also up and down swipes. The swipes start from off the touchpad and swipe over the edge (with a singe finger)and onto the  touchpad from one of the directions I mentioned. It brought up menus and other programs running. A nice option.

I might have found a trick, in any case that works for me with the latest Synaptics driver automatically installed today by Windows Update. Change the registry value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\DisableIntPDFeature to "33" (Hexa - it should be set at 22). Reboot. Now it should disable the trackpad on startup when there's a mouse connected. Only downside is that now every time I reboot there is this Windows notification on the bottom right corner telling the trackpad has been disabled because a mouse is connected to the computer... Don't know how to get rid of that yet.EDIT: Nevermind, just disable the Synaptics app notifications in the computer settings (tab "notifications")...! PS: Found this by trying the last option from this reference: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-turn-off-touchpad-when-mouse-is-connected-in-windows-78-1/

  • ITunes locking up after changing external hard drives?

I recently got a new external hard drive, and moved my music from the old one onto the bigger new one. (They're both the same brand, so I know it's not a compatibility problem.) I seem to have everything loaded into iTunes fine, but when it goes through and tries to get the album artwork, or determine the gapless playback it freezes, and I can't even force quit it. The only way for me to close iTunes is to log out and log back on.
I've tried un- and reinstalling and that wasn't the answer. Any help/Suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I came across your post because, I have been having issues for a while with the same description, except that I am using separate partitions on my main drive.
What I noticed is that if I set my podcast downloads to go to my NTFS main partition, there is no lag... but the moment I set it to my FAT32 partition, the lag starts back up.
I believe that the issue is with the slooow write time to FAT32 in large drives. (And in my instance, the move command apple does to put the podcast, which writes to the FAT32 partition and removes the NTFS temp download) Do you see the same lag or alot shorter if the drive is formatted to NTFS?
I don't really have any space currently to format my partition to test the issue, but I the fact of the downloads speeding up when set to my NTFS main disk makes me think that this issue could be lessened by using FAT32.
a side note for me, I'm considering reformatting my drive to NTFS, after backing up due to the advancement of ntfs3g in linux, so this could solve my problem at least.

  • Synaptics Touchpad Tap Scroll settings changed back to defaults on every reboot. Windows 10

After the Windows 10 upgrade my Synaptics Touchpad setings seem to be reset to factory defaults on every reboot.  I go in and change to deselect Tap and Scroll gesture options, save, and everything works as expected.  If I reboot my pc... all of my changes are erased. I go to Start >Settings > Mouse and Touchpad > Additional Mouse Options > Device Settings > Settings Right after boot:  MultiFinger Gestures (selected)  Scrolling (deselected)  Tapping (selected)  Buttons (selected) After change manually and saved:
MultiFinger Gestures (deselected)  Scrolling (deselected)  Tapping (deselected)  Buttons (selected) Rebooted again... and back to initial defaults (Arg!!!)  Can anyone suggest a fix?

Hello! I just wanted to share a solution to this issue. I've been having this issue ever since I started the Windows 10 insider program so it's sad that Microsoft didn't fix it before release. Anyway let's get started! The first thing you will want to do is uninstall the Synaptics Driver. Right click on the start button and click programs and features. Find the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver and uninstall it. You will eventually need to restart your PC but do not do that yet otherwise it will just reinstall itself. Next your going to want to Hide the update from Windows Update. To do this on Windows 10 you need to download a tool which can be found here. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930 Run the tool it will begin detecting problems and searching for updates. You will get two options, Hide Updates or Show hidden updates. Click on Hide updates and on the list you will see the Synaptics Driver, place a checkmark on it and then click next. Let the wizard finish and you've successfully hidden the Synaptics pointing device driver. Next open settings and click on Update & security, click recovery on your left, and then click restart now under advanced startup. Next click on troubleshoot. Then at the choose an option screen, click advanced options, click on startup settings, and click restart. Once your computer restarts you'll see startup settings. Press the number 7 to disable driver signature enforcement. Your computer will now boot up. Login and open your web browser and go to this link http://www.synaptics.com/en/drivers.php Download the latest synaptic's driver for Windows 8 and install it. Once installed, you maybe prompted to reboot so go ahead and reboot the computer. After that, go into your mouse settings and configure your touchpad to your liking. You will not have to worry about losing your settings after restarting the pc anymore. I suggest keeping the tool that allows you to hide or show hidden updates as it is quite handy.
    Summary:
    1.) Uninstall the Synaptics Driver
2.) Hide the Driver Update for Synaptics using this tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930
3.) Go to Settings, Update & security, recovery, advanced start [restart now]
4.) Click troubleshoot, advanced options, startup settings [restart now]
5.) Press the number 7 to disable driver signature enforcement
6.) Download the latest synaptic's driver for Windows 8 from the website. http://www.synaptics.com/en/drivers.php
7.) Reboot the computer if necessary.
8.) Configure your mouse settings to your liking.

  • My external hard drive goes in to constant access mode and really slows down my computer

I'm using an external hard drive for time machine.  After working for an hour or so the drive goes into a constant access mode and realy slows down my IMac.  I look at activity monitor and everything looks good, no high CPU usage or memory issues.  The only fix is to use the power button to shut down my IMac.  After restart it works fine for a while.
If I turn off time machine the problem seems to not happen.  I tried disk utility on the external hard drive and it says the dirve is fine.  I change out external drives and the problem still occures.  Any thoughts?

I didn't realize my profile stated otherwise.
Please check near the bottom of your original post above to see OS X (10.7.2).  You might want to update that to avoid confusion and save some time in the future.
OK, please take a deep breath.
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme....likely because it is not reliable. You might want to review this Apple Support document to confirm:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038
So, we are not going to be able to provide you with much assistance on that issue.
Some users seem to be able to make this work....some have some problems....and some (like me) who have tried this have nothing but problems.
Sorry, I can't help on this one, but maybe another user who has had better luck will post to provide his secrets.
The iTunes and iPhoto libraries and files are my only copies now.  I moved everything from my Macbook to the external then deleted the originals.
Not sure if you have thought about this.
If you deleted the "originals", then your only copy of your data is on one hard drive. You have no backups if the drive has a problem.
A minimum backup plan would be to have a copy of important data on two different drives. When....not if...one drive fails, you have the data on the "other" drive.
You have no "other" drive according to the information that you have provided.
Further.....Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point....you cannot know when.....Time Machine will pick up the change on your Mac and delete the iTunes and iPhoto data from your Time Machine backups.
The files might stay there a few months, or even longer. But, I have seen instances where the files were deleted within a week or two.
So my advice would be to only delete data from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • ESATA - No Hotswap - Connected drives going to sleep - BSOD

    Hello Forum,
I have a brand new HP Envy 700-215xt, running Windows 7 Home Premium.
I purchased an eSATA bracket so I could hotswap two external drives.  DRIVE 1 is a 1TB SAMSUNG drive in an enclosure by Acomdata.  DRIVE 2 is a Hitachi 250 GB laptop drive in a simple no-name enclosure.
    *** PROBLEM #1 ***
Both drives show up fine in Windows if they are attached and powered on before booting up.  Neither of the drives appear at all when powered up after the computer is already booted.  Going into device manager and selecting "Scan hardware for changes does nothing.  The only way to make the drive available to the OS is to reboot the computer.  This is very disappointing.  I thought eSATA was supposed to be hotswappable.
Since both drives worked exactly as expected on my Win XP machine, I suspect this has to do with the motherboard or BIOS settings.  Please help me get this feature working.
    *** PROBLEM #2 ***
Even when the drives are recognized by the OS, after a few minutes of inactivity, the SAMSUNG drive "goes to sleep".  I can actually hear it spin down.  When I try and and access the files through the explorer or any other application, I hear the drive spin up and I have to wait on order of 15-20 seconds for the drive to wake back up.
I have even gotten a few BSODs, especially when I try to shut down the computer while the Samsung drive is asleep.  I have to do something to wake up the drive before I can shut down.
Where are the settings for me to disable this annoying behavior?
    Thanks for your help,
    -Steve
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

eSATA on HP PC's depends on what its plugged into.
If you have an external PCIe card, this will hotswap if the card allows it. There is nothing within the motherboard to stop that, its an external controller and will function as such.
If your external esata card is simply a port with a cable going to one of your sata ports then you will need to have it going to either a port on the motherboard labelled as esata, or a sata port that allows you to select internal or external in the bios.
Not all HP's are very forgiving in this regard. I have an Elite 8200 CMT at work and that has one esata port. We have an external caddy in it with two bays, but we can only use one due to the limitations of this board. And the sata ports on this board can't be selected as external.

  • Synaptics touchpad sensitivity will not change

Under Synaptics device settings, The sensitivity will not change when I adjust the sensitivity setting with the slider. Uninstalled Synaptics driver & reinstalled with the latest version. The sensitivity is the same with or without the Synaptics driver installed.  Thanks!

I've searched I can't find a solution. I thought for sure a driver update would solve it but it didn't. I also noticed that the pressure graph only goes about half way with hard pressure instaed up to the top. Suggestions?

  • Hard drive startup issues after extended sleep/shutdown

    Hello,
When I put my iMac to sleep or shut it off for an extended period of time (overnight) and then try to wake it up or turn it on, the iMac makes a strange clicking noise and freezes.
After manually shutting down and restarting it one or more times it will startup fine.
Putting to sleep/shutting down the computer for short periods of time doesn't cause any problems.
So when this first started happening I though "Uh oh, hard drives going to that great recycling depot in the sky."
But, Disk Utility, Apple's hardware test, and TechTool Pro 4 all find nothing wrong with my system.
Is there any chance this could not be an hard drive issue? Or should I just get the drive replaced and stop trying to diagnose the problem?

You've covered the biggies already - I'd recommend a trip to the Apple store or at least a call to AppleCare. Back in the late 80's and early 90's 'stiction' was a serious problem with hard drives. A hard drive motor has very low torque; it can spin fast but it doesn't have much oomph and the lubricant used back then could harden overnight so that when the computer was booted up the drive's motor couldn't spin up the platters. Improvements in lubricants have made stiction less common today but it hasn't been eradicated and it is one of the things that might be affecting your drive. At any rate, since I can't put your computer on my bench, the best call I can make is for you to make a call. Sorry.

  • HT1491 My password in iTunes will not work, even after changing it. It keeps showing a window to add PW. I do and it pops up again.

My PW in iTues will not work. Even after changing it. Window pops up and ask for PW. Over and over.

I would be worried about that - but it may turn out to be nothing.
Since you already changed your password, you're probably OK - but I recommend looking at your purchase history to see if there's any unauthorized purchases (use iTunes on your Mac or PC to go to the itunes store, then click your account in the upper-left or upper-right corner). If there are any new purchases that you didn't make, click the button to report problem (and if they happened after you reset your password, you should immediately change your password again).
I think sometimes when you change your password and verifiy your credit card info, it can "reset" the warnings - so it may actually have been you logging in to your own account that caused you to get the warning. But I'm not absolutely sure of that, so it's best to check your purchase history (and reset your password if necessary - but you already did that).
I also recommend turning on "two-step verification" (but Apple makes you wait a few days after changing your password to turn that on). With "two-step verification", Apple will send you a text message with a 4-digit code the 1st time you try to buy something from a new computer - since a hacker won't have your phone, they won't be able to continue (theoretically). After the 1st time, it goes back to mostly working normally (until the 1st time you  try to purchase from another new computer, then you get another text message - so this alerts you to someone, somewhere else, trying to get into your account).

I havent had the exact same problem as you but I am having a similar problem where lately I noticed when working in Pro Tools (mainly because I use my mac pro for audio work) or even when on the internet whatever it may be that my screen has been flickering a little bit or gets slightly glitchy.
Yesterday upon startup for the first time the screen went black. Had to do a force shutdown. Unplugged all external devices. Reset everything as well. Slowly checked everything was on the phone with Apple even during the process. Seemed to correct the issue. Then of course I get off the phone, restarted my computer and it goes black randomly again.
Rebooted fine. Checked all my hard disks internal and external, verified and repaired permissions on main drive and clone. Since then nothing yet...But I still feel its either the Video Card or the Monitor as everything else is fully operational.
I plan on taking it in to look at as my applecare is up in November but I cant point my finger on it. And really am trying to avoid lugging the mac pro and monitor in at the same time...(Not the easiest thing with lack of parking in nyc..)
If the display was dying I feel like it would have konked out already.
The funny thing is I have had to replace video cards and monitors in the past but this time I cant quite figure out what the **** is going on.
I am leaning towards the video card as I noticed it flickered a little when opening plug in windows in pro tools or multiple windows in sfari but it doesnt make sense.
Worst part is I cant do a hardware test cause for some reason this computer doesnt have the software installed. It does nothing when I hold down the D button...
I  totally baffled but the randomness of this.
