Synaptics Driver Problems? [solved]

Anybody else having issues with the synaptics driver lately?  I spent the last couple weeks messing around with some other distros, and this morning when I reinstalled Arch I couldn't get X to start without changing my mouse driver from "synaptics" back to "mouse".  I get 3 error messages all complaining about not being able to find the synaptics device.  I'm not doing anything different from normal.  I'm even using the same xorg.conf because I keep a backup of the one I know works.  I also ran hwd to make a new one just in case my computer changed its hardware over night, but still no X if I try to use "synaptics".
Has the version of the synaptics package in the repositories changed recently?  If so, I'm blaming the new version, because I had an almost identicle problem with FreeBSD using synaptics from ports.
Now, everybody upgrade your driver and tell me if it breaks.

  • 975X PowerUp--setting up PATA RAID0 and 2 optical drives (Problem Solved)

Hi, all.  Revamping my existing system extensively and need some help.
I have 2 optical drives and 2 hard drives.  I want to have the optical drives set up as master/slave on one IDE cable and the 2 hard drives set up as a RAID array on a second IDE cable.  I did it on my old mobo but is this possible with the 975X Platinum PowerUp?
The manual says that IDE1 can support a master and slave, but that IDE2 only supports a master.  However, I know this to be false because IDE2 is the slot that the JMicron RAID controller governs.  I can manage to set up a RAID0 array with both HDDs master/slaved and plugged into IDE2.  However, the optical drives in IDE1 are not recognized if I do this.  I can get the system to recognize the optical drives if I plug them into IDE2...  They work, but are incorrectly recognized by the JMicron portion of system post as a RAID array.  I can't install Windows on the RAID array because so far the system won't access the optical drives without them being on IDE2--which I need for JMicron to control the RAID array.  You can see how this would cause trouble.    Is there some way that I can go into the BIOS and tell the system that IDE1 is the optical drives?
I have looked in the manual and on websites.  Nobody seems to have the same problem.  I know that I am a bit behind the times by not having a CD-RW/DVD-RW combo drive, but even having only the one device would not solve the problem of devices on IDE1 not being recognized by the system.  This sounds like it should be possible to set up correctly, but because of the unfamiliarity of the motherboard and the complexity of the BIOS in relation to my last one, I know I am not doing something right.  I hope I've made the situation clear enough to make sense to other people!
    Any suggestions?

Since it is a fresh install, the only drivers that are installed are the ones that came on the Windows XP SP2 CD and the JMicron RAID drivers that I slipstreamed in.  However, the directory structure and instructions for use weren't very clear in the .zip file that the RAID drivers came in.  It says:
    "For floppy install:
Please copy all the directories and files in the "floppy" folder to the root directory of a floppy disk to create a pre-install disk for Win2K/WinXP/Win2003/WinXP 64bits/Win2003 64bits.
    For example,
    A:\amd64
    \x32
    txtsetup.oem"
Well, my power supply does not have a connector for a floppy drive, which is why I was installing the RAID drivers with a slipstreamed XP CD.  However, in the actual .zip file, there is no "floppy" folder!  There are 4 subdirectories:  Application, Driver, Floppy32 and Floppy64.  The Driver directory has 2 subdirectories:  amd64 and x32.  I didn't understand whether I was supposed to use the files in the Driver/x32 folder, or the ones in the Floppy32 folder.
I ended up slipstreaming the files from the Floppy32 folder because it seemed to make the most sense according to the instructions.  However, I noticed both in nLite and when Windows was actually preparing setup that multiple RAID drivers were found in and loaded from this directory, whereas in the Driver/x32 folder, nLite detected only one set of RAID drivers.  Did I use the wrong directory to get the JMicron RAID drivers when I made the slipstreamed XP CD?  Or do you think there is a different problem?

  • Overheating the laptop - Ati driver problem (SOLVED)

    Hi ppl.
I have Acer Aspire 5732 Z laptop. Intel Pentium processor T4400 2.2 GHz. Ati Mobility Radeon HD 4570 512 MB VRAM, 15.6", 3 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD.
I successfully solved all the problems during the installation, but this one I can not handle. The laptop is HEATING too much. I also have Ubuntu 9.10 on the other partition and its all fine. Its working on the temperature of ~46 C. And my Arch is working on the temperature of ~60 C. So its about 15 C difference between Ubuntu and Arch. Way too much.
Arch is running in KDE mode. Have to add that I installed all KDE packages. Maybe the cause of this problem ?
I am using the proprietary Ati Radeon driver. I tried to change it with open source Ati driver but Xorg refused to configure again (gave me a blank screen).
I checked Wiki on laptop, but didnt succeded to solve this problem. Here s my rc.conf:
    MODULES=( acpi-cpufreq )
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus hal !acpid !acpi-support powernowd wicd !network !netfs alsa crond laptop-mode kdm)
    powernowd configuration:
    OPTIONS="-q -u 30 -l 10"
acpi-support is blacklisted because I installed it from AUR and didnt managed it to work. Its just saying "no permission" during the boot. I actually installed it because I read that its Ubuntus Acpi management. ~ I repeat Acpi is working fine on my Ubuntu.
I can also show my laptop-mode configuration files - if needed.
I am a newbie for Arch but I rlly done my best on this issue as I want to use this system. I think its great and highly configurable and I just love the fact its a rolling distro. But I cant use it overheating.
    So, please help.

I am using lmsensors on Arch and some kind of panel sensor on Mint, but its ok for sure. Few minutes ago I checked temperature on Arch and it was 56 C. Then I rebooted and when I logged into Mint it was 56 C. But few mins later temperature normalized to 45 C in Mint. After lsmod I logged into Arch again and temperature raised to 54 C.
So its Arch problem for sure.
    @hokasch
I am not sure about noise level of fans. Sounds similar to me. But maybe its a fan problem. I know its sometimes loud and sometimes silent. Probably depends on the system temperature. Maybe Arch cant control it normaly. Is there any kind of software that is used for fan speed ?

  • DVD drive problem solved

I just received a MacBook Pro yesterday as a Christmas gift. Absolutely loved it until last night. I had watched one DVD yesterday after I got it set up without any problems. Then, I decided to watch a DVD last night. Put in a used DVD I had purchased from Blockbuster Video. They had put an additional label on it with a couple of strips that run through it that I am assuming are used to prevent people from stealing them. The DVD drive read the disc fine but it sounded like the label was rubbing against the top of the drive while it was spinning. In fact, it was so loud, I couldn't even hear the audio when the speakers were turned up full blast, so I quit DVD player, ejected the disc and put in another disc to watch. Was very disappointed when the DVD drive wouldn't work at all. Wouldn't spin. Just made this humming sound and eventually ejected the disc. Tried some other discs with the same result.
Made up my mind to take the computer to an Apple Store today. But not before reading through the posts in this discussion. Found out that there were some firmware updates. Installed them without any success. Read one post that wasn't really related to my problem where one person suggest zapping the PRAM. I figured it was worth a try so I zapped the PRAM. Now the drive works just fine. Even the DVD that originally caused the problem plays in the drive and doesn't make a bit of noise. Odd solution to a very disappointing problem. I really thought I was going to have to have the drive replaced and would be without my MacBook Pro for a short time.

    I'm sorry, I should've edited this post.
Later I had the idea of going to the bios and checking to see if my hardware was even recognized at first, and it wasn't. It's probably broken. Did you do this? I got to thinking that its rather unlikely that the system would fail to recognize the CD/DVD drive since its needed for the installation, don't you think? It should be very stable.

  • CS3 Leopard Epson R1800 driver problems solved (hopefully)

Trying to put this post in searchable terms for others having the same problem finding the answer -- new to mac.
Everybody knows that you need to go to epson.com and download the new mac leopard drivers for most of the printers, including R1800. But the new driver won't install correctly unless you go into Library/Printers/ and move the entire "EPSON" folder into the trash can before double clicking the VISE install icon on the downloaded package. (Maybe there is another way to make it work, but mine wouldn't actually install and start working till I did this.)
If you have the right driver, you will see "EPSON SP R1800 (1)" as your driver in System Preferences/Print&Fax. Also, you will see "Print Settings", "Roll Paper Option", "Expansion" and "Extension Settings" as options in the pulldown menu in the epson print dialog through PS CS3 (after hitting print in the first print dialog box). There is also a "basic" and "Advanced" choice under Print Settings.
If you still have the wrong driver, you won't get any errors, but the new dialog box won't show up. The old driver that doesn't work shows up (I think I remember correctly) as EPSON SPR 1800 in your System Preferences window. No parenthetical. Also, if you have the old bad driver, in the epson print dialog box, you see a different set of options, and no 'basic' and 'advanced' choice under print settings.
I hope that helps some people. I was having a hard time knowing if I had the new driver actually working (even though I thought I installed it). Turns out I didn't! Thanks to random post by John McWilliams and Duane Ellison (who posted screenshot of new dialog in the LR forum), I figured out the thing with the Epson folder. Now let's just hope the prints look good!

    Hi Laura.
Isn't that the most frustrating thing in the world? Anyway, that isn't the right driver. That is the one that ships with Leopard (or something, I don't know - anyway, wrong one).
Try deleting the EPSON folder again, deleting your printer from system prefs/print fax, reinstalling the driver and re-finding your printer. Now that I think about it, I did that, and generally fiddled around in there a bit, before it worked.
I don't know how Macs associate printers with drivers (I'm a PC person and missing my PC!), but once the software in the dmg package was properly installed, the printer automatically picked up the EPSON SP R1800 (1) driver when I told it to go look for printers. I didn't have to choose it from the list of drivers.
    Hope that helps.
    Susan

  • HP Driver Problem Solved...Buy Epson!!!

Below is a transcript from HP Support Chat...the tech admits that they have not updated their drivers since Acrobat 5
Christine Shock : Need a twain compliant driver for Officejet Pro L7590 as we are having problems with this machine working with Adobe Acrobat Pro 9
[An agent will be with you shortly.]
[You are now chatting with Astle .]
    Astle : Hello Christine.
Astle : /Welcome to HP Total Care for All-in-One products. My name is Astle. Please give me a few moments while I review your problem description details.
Astle : No need to worry, We will work on it.
Astle : Could you please provide the Model Name of the All-in-one (eg: officejet 7110, PSC 2400) ?
Christine Shock : All I need is to download a Twain compliant driver for your all in one...the one currently loaded does not seem to work like the epson
Christine Shock : Officejet Pro L7590
Astle : May I know the version of the Operating System (Windows 98/Me/XP/Vista) you are using?
Christine Shock : Windows XP SP3
Astle : Can you let me know exactly how the All-in-One is connected to the computer,Is it through a USB cable or over a network?
    Christine Shock : networked
Astle : Thank you for the information.
Astle : Are you having problem printing from the Adobe acrobat application?
Christine Shock : No I am attempting to scan either to PDF or to OCR and the machine is locking up...Looks like the driver that shipped with the machine does not have a compliant twain driver as the epson machine is working the the same configuration
Astle : Christine, I regret to let you know that we are experiencing a few compatibility with the newer versions of Adboe.
Astle : However you can be able to scan a document by selecting the *.pdf option in the file type.
Christine Shock : So I take it we need to send this back to HP and go with Epson...how do I get an RMA
Astle : Did you install the printer software?
    Christine Shock : Yes
Astle : Inorder to use the OCR program to scan a document and edit it, We need to have the Readiiris OCR program installed on the computer.
Astle : We will see if this program is installed or not.
Astle : Click on start ==> search ==> Files and Folders ==> in the search box key in "Dpe_OCR.exe" without quotes and search for the file.
    Christine Shock : both dpe_ocr.exe
    Christine Shock : and
Christine Shock : dpe_ocr.exe.local are there
Astle : Double click on the dpe_ocr.exe file to start the OCR program.
Astle : Now try scanning a document, In the scan to option select save to file and in the file type select *.rtf (rich text file) and then try to scan.
Christine Shock : I do not want to use readiris...I want to use Acrobat Pro 9 for this...Is your device compliant with current Twain and or WIA
Astle : Is the printer is connected with the USB cable we can be able scan through the Windows Image Aquisition.
Christine Shock : no it's networked and we want to be able to scan into Adobe Acrobat, If this machine cannot do this please advise and we will send it back and go with epson
Astle : Christine, As stated previously we can be able to scan to pdf. But as we are experiencing a few compatibility problems we might not be able to have the option listed there.
Astle : Do you have the *.pdf option listed when you try to scan from the HP Software?
Christine Shock : What I need this machine to do is scan into Adobe Acrobat 9...I do not want to use anything but Acrobat 9 If this machine cannot do that (as we were told by your educational sales rep I am advising my IT department to send this back and go with Epson
Astle : We cannot scan directly to Adobe 9, but can use the save to file option and scan the document as a pdf file and open it with the adobe application.
Astle : Do you have any other queries for me ?
Christine Shock : This is not satisfactory and I need a machine that will scan directly into Acrobat 9...any way to print this chat out
Astle : I understand yourconcern Christine, and I am trying my best to help you out.
    Ast

  • Ipod not recognised? my solution. (driver problem solved)

my computer didnt recognise my ipod when i first attached it, (it was in windows explorer, but not my comp) and i followed loads of impossible "causes" of this up to deleting parts of the windows registry :O
(skip next step if found new hardware wizard comes up when you connect ipod)
turns out the problem was drivers. very easy. you go into device manager (start menu . right click my computer > manage) then look for unknown devices (yellow ?) and right click ipod > propertys. go to drivers tab, and reinstall / install drivers. the wizard will come up.
click this time only then next, and install the drivers from a specific location. type C:\WINDOWS\inf into the box, and it shoud find the drivers for the ipod and install them. another wizard may come up after this one finishes - do exactly the same thing on that one.
my ipod was now recognised. hope it helps someone else

  • [SOLVED] Synaptics Driver is not loaded

I try to set up a T400 and ran into problems with the touchpad. My 10-synaptics.conf sets synaptics as the driver:

I followed your advice and got suspicious when my touchpad stoped working completly. So I got rid of the 10-synaptics.conf posted above (which was taken from the T400 arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Le … _UltraNav) and started a new from strach. As there seems to be no native multitouch support I found the debian page quite helpful: http://wiki.debian.org/SynapticsTouchpad.
My new 10-synaptics.conf looks like that:
    Section "InputClass"

This started after an update about a week ago. It was working perfectly fine with no effort before. I have an elantech touchpad.

  • Middle button scrolling stopped working after Synaptics driver updates. (3rd gen, Windows 10)

It seems that the new driver released in 3/17/2015 by Synaptics has issues with middle button.
And it doesn't even list middle button in its panel. I can't find a proper feedback entrance on Synaptics' sites so I hope posting here would help. (Though considering a driver issue with Compact Bluetooth Keyboard doesn't get fixed in years, I don't think they would give a **bleep**. Oh why I am buying ThinkPad again!)

Same thing happened to me, but with an HP laptop. It seems that Windows 10 (at least, while in preview) does not allow you to disable automatic updates, and rolling back the driver (which solves the problem) won't help much - it will be installed again...
The only way I found how to prevent this particular update from installing is a set of PowerShell tools to control Windows Updates. I wrote about how to do it here: http://superuser.com/questions/901803/prevent-windows-10-from-installing-updating-a-specific-driver/...
    Hope this helps!

  • Touchpad stop woking after Synaptics driver is installed

2 days ago I installed the new Ethernet, WWAN, Camera, Wireless, Audio, Graphics drivers from the HP website and also the latest BIOS, and the Synaptics touchpad mouse and stick mouse stopped working, if I remove the Synaptics driver the touchpad will work (very slow), If I reinstall the Synaptics driver again it will stop working, I've tried different versions of the Synaptics driver from the HP support website and nothing, as soon as the driver is installed the touchpad will stop working. I have removed the WWAN and Camera driver but nothing happens still the same. If I reboot into BIOS mode the touchpad works fine, so it's not a harware problem. If I check the Mouse Properties there is no Synaptics tab. If I check the Device Manager it's all good.
    This question was solved.

    @brosenz ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  The first thing I would ask is what prompted a BIOS update.
Did you have an issue with your system that required you to do a BIOS update. If not do an HP BIOS recovery back to the old version.  If it isn't broke don't fix it.
    Restoring the BIOS
After that do a system recovery back to the older driver and software.  Again if it isn't broke don't fix it.
Now if you where having issues with the system that required a BIOS update and an update in drivers and the recovery does not resolve the problem.  Contact HP phone support for repair options.

  • Bluetooth driver problem on windows 8.1 Yoga Tablet 2-1051f

    Hi,
I just purchased my yoga tablet 2 but i can't bluetooth get working.
Bluetooth device has status "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". Currently installed  driver from microsoft, version 6.3.9600.17093. Also I'v tried to install driver for bluetooth from http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/tablets/yoga-series/yoga-tablet-2-1051 but it didn't bring any changes. After trying to reinstall driver I'v noticed errors in event log: 1. The address of the local Bluetooth adapter is not valid, Source: BthMini, Event ID: 2; 2.The driver has been unloaded, Source: BthMini, Event ID: 17.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Problem solved.
I have found the way to set BT on.
Instead Fn+F5 I have found on the section "Lenvo Internet Connection", a function that call "Radio Wireless".
    Now I'm happy.

  • Lenovo T400 screen goes dark issue, some video driver problem

    Lenovo:
    Motherboard:
    CPU Type: Mobile DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo P8600, 2400 MHz (9 x 267)
    Motherboard Chipset:  Intel Cantiga GM45
System Memory: 1992 MB (DDR3 SDRAM)
    BIOS Type: Phoenix (08/19/08)
    Display:
Video Adapter: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Video Adapter: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
3D Accelerator: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470
    Problem/Issue:
Driver problem appeard after upgrading from XP to Windows 7.
From the Device Manager I saw that ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 was not working properly and
    a) I did the "update driver software." After restart the screen light was darker than usual. (This was usual if I was working from battery but I was plugged in this time. )
As I'm not the best with computers I thought my drivers might be in conflict and to prevent serious damages, I just
    b) disabled ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 from device manager.
This actually resolved the dark screen problem.
    c) then I went to Lenovo support site: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-72858
downloaded newest drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 (Switchable Graphics Driver)
and Intel 4500MHD (Intel GM45 Express Chip)
For some reason while installine the: Intel GM45 Display Driver (version 8.15.10.2302) gives me error:
"This Computer Does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software"
Also some problem appeard when installing the new downloaded version:
ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver  (version 8.792.5-110424b-119200C)
    d) so I went back to device manager and made an update to ATI Mobility Radeon  from there.
Well, I got it working, but the screen went dark again. When I disable the driver it goes back to normal
brightness and when I enable it again, it stays normal.
I'll try to restart and see what happens

We had the excat same issue.
I could get the picuture back pressing the power button until it went to sleep and then wake it up again.
After the I went to device manager to delete all display drivers both Intel and ATI and then reboot.
doing the reboot windows found some drivers it could use.
I then installed the switchable driver from lenovo.
Now windows device manger report two display drivers:
    1)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series, Version 8.792.5.2000, Driver manufacturer ATI Technologies Inc
    2)
Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family, Version, Version 8.792.5.2000, Driver manufacturer ATI Technologies Inc
So it seams the switchable ATI driver take over the Intel card and the Intel driver is not needed.
At least the problem is solved for us.

  • Windows 7 - HP Laserjet 8500 print driver problem

I have tried everything imaginable to correct this HP 8500n print driver problem with no success, please help!
I cannot correct or get rid of a reoccurring “Incompatible Print Settings” error dialog box message that repeatedly states that “There are one or more conflicting settings. One of the settings is: Output Bin: Mailbox 1, Accessory Output Bin: Not Installed”. The radio button options are “Restore my previous settings or Keep this setting, and I will change it later”. This same dialog message repeats 13 times for all the other various conflicts each time you click on printer properties to change to 2 sided printing or any other printer settings. This printer does not have any of these features attached or set into it.
I am a volunteer that manages a number of computers on our small church LAN, 2 computers operating on MS XP-SP3, 2 on MS Windows 7 Home Premium and my 2 problem computers that came pre-installed with Vista Home Premium of which I have performed an HP OEM upgrade to Window 7.
I have isolated this print driver problem to the Vista operating system and even when computers are upgraded to Windows 7 does not correct this driver error. I have also tried every possible print driver variant of the HP 8500, HP8550, PCL, PS to include the Microsoft versus HP versions with no success. In each case I get this error yet neither of the XP computers or the computers that had Windows 7 as a original operating system have no problems with their print drivers for this printer.
Yes, I have repeatedly searched and upgraded the operating system and print drivers. In desperation I have even tried to find the correctly behaving Windows 7 print driver and transfer it to these Vista upgraded to Windows 7 machines. However I could not isolate the driver location.
The only thing I can conclude is that this errant HP print driver was resident within Vista and remains resident even after a HP OEM Windows 7 upgrade. Additionally, all of these computers are configured to access this printer via its static IP address on the network.  The XP computers are 32 bit, all of the Vista upgraded to Win 7 and OEM Win 7 computers are 64 bit machines all with respective OS.
Can anyone please help me correct this problem?

    Hi,
Unfortunately I can't see your uploaded image yet as it is awaiting approval from HP.
From what I can see you are correct that HP does supply drivers for this printer and that the drivers for your printer are already included with Windows 7.  On the machines affected, try the procedure below to see if it helps at all
Next download revo uninstaller on the link below and install it.
    http://www.revouninstaller.com/download-freeware-version.php
Disconnect the printer from the PC.
Run Revo and see if it finds any  HP Printer Software installed.  If it does, right click the software icon and select uninstall.  During the process you may be asked to delete registry entries.  If you are, just select all and click delete.  Do the same for any left over files and folders.  Once completed, reboot the PC.
Re-connect your printer to the PC and follow the guide below.
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?&objectID=c02536257
If this helps you will need to repeat the process on each of the affected machines.
    Best wishes,

  • PLEASE HELP .... Tosiba hard drive problem or dead ???

Hi ... I never had a hard drive die before.  So I am not sure how this would occur.  Not sure if I purchase a new Toshiba hard drive would solved the problems I am coming across.
    I am using a Toshiba MX4019GAX 40GB h/d for my notebook for about 5 1/2 years.
    Error Message#1:
     Intel(R) Boot Agent FE v4.1.09
       (c) 1997-2002, Intel Corporation
       Intel Base-Code, PXE-2.1 (build083)
       (c) 1997-2002, Intel Corporation
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
       PXE-M0F: Existing Intel Boot Agent
       Operating System Not Found
This is partially solved.  But comes back after a couple of crashes and sometime when I turn on the notebook.
After selecting F10 for BIOS boot setup, hard drive is listed as first selection.  The "Primary Master" shows "none" every now and then.  Sometimes it will pick up and list the Toshiba hard drive.  I did see the Toshiba drive listed with garbage (!!!! after Toshiba MX4019GAX) a couple of times.  Already opened the HDD drive bay and checked connections/tighten cable.  Looks okay to me.
Problem #2:  Notebook crashes while I'm on the internet.
Error:  States a serious error has occurred and the system will shutdown
to prevent serious damage (the dreaded blue screen).
After restarting the notebook.  I get ..... Cannot find file .... c:/windows/system32/config ....
So I reinstalled the prepackaged windows xp os through setup along with drivers and application programs.  It worked for a while and then crashes again.  I reinstalled again, then I get the error ....
    Problem#3:
Error:  Faulty driver discovered by plug and play.
    Blue Screen tech info: Setup: 0x000000CA (0x00000001, 0x812c5B10, 0x812c5E30, 0,x000000000)
Now I cannot even get to windows.  I also disable plug and play through the BIOS
setup.  I still cannot get to windows.
Problem#4  While going through Windows setup ........
Error:  Windows XP require a hard drive volume with at least 492 megabytes of free space ....... Setup was unable to locate such a drive with the required amount of free space.
I just get a blinking cursor on a black screen now.
IS THE PROBLEM THE HARD DRIVE?
I did not hear any rattling or loud noises like most users do.
Question #1:  How do users usually know a hard drive is dead?
Question #2:  What occurances tells a user that a hard drive needs to be replaced (what do the see happen on the screen)?
Question #3:  Are users coming across the same problems I am having (are these the signs)?
Question #4:  Checking the C:\ with DOS .... why don't the full 40GB show.  Only see a 100,000+ bytes listed.
Please advise.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Everything you are seeing is indicative of a failing hard drive.  Ensure that you have backups of any critical data immediately before it fails completely.  Then replace the drive.
