Sync and "Enable Disc Use"
Just noticed that the iPod Touch doesn't give you the "Enable Disc Use" option in iTunes.
Any idea why ?
Apple haven't activated/allowed this yet. We may see this when the SDK (Software Development Kit) which will allow people to create 3rd party applications, is released.
Until then, it's anyone's guess when or if we'll ever if able to do this.

Trying to transfer camera video to computer (windows XP) if I uncheck the manual transfer box, I will lose all the data that is already on the IPOD and have to settle for a download of everything in my library. How do I get access to the "enable disc use" option?
Awesome. Glad to hear that the issue has been resolved. Currently, the only way to copy the Video files from your iPod to your computer is the manual way. Perhaps you could suggest the automatic feature to Apple through the link below.

Not sure as to why photos are all being removed upon syncing, but I do know that you can set your iPod up to sync any folder you wish that contains photos as described in this Apple support document.

80gB Classic requires restore whenever I attempt to enable disc use
I have a new 80 GB classic. Syncing music and video is fine but when I enable disc use (even just ticking the box and not transferring anything) there is no longer any music or videos on the ipod even after safely manually ejecting ipod. The ipod is then not recognized when it is reconnected and requires to be restored. I restored twice and update to latest firmware with same results.
I don't know if it is related but safari and mail have been crashing all the time after upgrading to 10.4.11. I have not found a solution to this yet either.

Itunes keeps quiting since i've enabled disc use on ipod
hello
i updated my ipod software to allow me to "enable disc use". since then, after onlya few moments my "itunes has detected a problem and must shut down".
i can not update anything
itunes does however remain open when ipod is not connected
this is all very frustrating

I canot find the "Enable Disc Use" option in the summary screen of this version. I checked the help file and there is nothing there. Need help!!

Hi, I have my husbands 1st gen shuffle and want to use it as a memory stick with my new MBP. The options to change it to disc use are not available in the "settings" tab when it is plugged in...am I missing something? And how do I enable it for disc use? is there a workaround?

Open iTunes.
Select the shuffle in (what I still call) the Source list. The display in iTunes main window will be tabbed.
Select the Settings tab in the main window.
'Enable disk use' and the slider are at the bottom of the window. You may have to scroll to find it.

My hard drive crashed, do I have to sync and erase to use iTunes?
Hi guys,
So my hard drive died during a recent move. I was able to recover all of my music files onto an external drive, but my computer is now running on a new hard drive, onto which I've installed iTunes, and imported all my old music.
All well and good, except when I plug in my iphone and attempt to manually manage my files, I get the dreaded, "You must Sync and Erase" message.
Is there any way I can sync my phone to this library without losing everything?
I actually don't mind erasing the music. I'll add it back in manually. But the idea of reinstalling all my apps and setting them all up again, losing my pictures, videos, contacts, etc. is somewhat daunting.
Anybody have any possible solutions?Note that the OP apparently DID have a backup, and restored all of the music to iTunes. We are so used to people not having backups that we assume that no one does.
If the music is on your computer then when you sync it will erase the content, but then put it back from the restored music library. It would probably be easier to disable Manually Manage.. and instead sync the music library. Less work. -

option using /log:<file name>. However, the log files created do not seem to be regular text files or any other log file format that I immediately recognize. When opened in Notepad or Wordpad you can see that they contain a lot of additional binary data
which can't be read by a regular text viewer.

Only Microsoft can manage to design something as stupid as this. If you start wusa from the command line, it pops up the alternative command line switches. For log, it just says: " /log - installer will enable logging". It doesn't say that you
should specify the log file name, hence not HOW you specify it (" /log:<path\filename>.") It doesn't say what extension to use for the file, alas which file type it is (" /log:<path\filename.evtx>."). You open it in notepad, you cannot read it.
You open it in sccm's cmtrace.exe/trace32.exe, you get nothing. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO IMPLEMENT THIS IN A WORSE WAY. How can something be so bad? How can Microsoft get such stupidity inhouse, when you need to go through six interviews or something to get in??

ITunes 9.0.2 crashes when syncing and enable Spoken Menus is checked.
I have had no problems syncing my 5th generation iPod until I checked Enable Spoken Menus. There is no problem with Enable Voiceover. I have tried this 4 times and each time iTubes 9.0.2 crashes. If I uncheck Enable Spoken Menus the problem goes away. Firmware is 1.0.2, worked ok in 1.0.1
Actually, iTunes 9.0.2.25 was the first version that supported Windows 7. The Windows 7 64-bit issues with iTunes are complicated by things by the nVidia chipset issues (which tends to crop up on 64 bit systems because they are more likely to have 4 GB of RAM installed), and the issues with PM55 and P55 intel chipsets (which is a BIOS issue). There's also trouble with AMDS installs on some 64-bit systems, but that's hitting Vista systems as well as 7 systems.
I'd try giving 9.0.3.15 a crack. From the release notes:
iTunes 9.0.3 provides a number of important bug fixes, including:
• iTunes no longer ignores your "Remember password for purchases" setting.
• Addresses problems with syncing some Smart Playlists and Podcasts with iPod.
• Resolves a problem recognizing when iPod is connected.
• Addresses issues that affect stability and performance.
... So fingers crossed, that might include your particular issue.
In particular, if you're still at 9.0.0, you'll likely have the 1.0.1 version of Apple Application Support. That was linked to some syncing issues. With a 9.0.3.15 (or a later version of the 9.0.2.25 installers) you'll have a Apple Application Support 1.1.0 in place which might also help matters. -

I am having difficulties with my iPod and my new computer (Windows 8). My laptop won't read the iPod (it disappears from the "File Explorer" after just a few seconds). I was told to save all my files to SharePod first. However, when I do this, it tells me I need to go to iTunes and "Enable Disc Use" on my iPod. When I went to do this, it began syncing my iPod, but I got worried that it would erase any songs I did not have on iTunes or did not purchase from iTunes (many songs were purchased from Amazon).
Will syncing my iPod on my new laptop in an empty iTunes make me lose all my songs on my iPod?

Unable to disable 20gb iPod 'enable disk use' Disc in iTunes7

i got this problem, when i connected my old 20gb iPod on to my computer which now has iTunes 7 installed i wont be able to turn off "Enable disc use" check button. Why?
Resetting the iPod wont help, restoring the software to iPod wont solve the problem either.
Can anyone help with this one? Or is this setting solid and could not be changed.

T.Do you have the iPod set to manual transfer? That's the reason that the enable disk use option is greyed out and not selectable.
With manual, the default setting is enabled and cannot be changed. -
"Notes" does not appear on device menu even after checking enable disk use
I am not able to see notes in my ipod device menu. I have enabled disc use in I Tunes and selected "On" for notes in my IPod menu.
I found the Ipod Icon with the notes folder on my desktop.
