Sync aperture 3 between 2 computers

How can I sync Aperture libraries on 2 computers (my laptop and my desktop)? Apple says:
"Merge and Sync Libraries
To merge two or more Aperture libraries, simply drag one Aperture library into another. If any of the merged projects match those already in the library, Aperture automatically updates those items with the most recent changes."
Question--Will this drag-and-drop method work between 2 computers?
Thanks for any help.

Hey everyone,
I've been using iPhoto on my laptop (which was my main computer) since like 2004 when I first started on Mac. The iPhoto library reads as 150gb... so quite a lot.
I also have a desktop that I use for work (mainly Video editing station) but over the last year, my projects have gotten me into using Aperture on the Mac Pro and now any time I happen to go back to iPhoto... it feels "small". So i'm gonna be moving that over to Aperture as well.
Now... a fair amount of my personal stuff over the last year has been making it onto the desktop with aperture due to its better editing capabilities... but I'd like this stuff to be on the laptop as well. Last few months I've been using PhotoStream to push back the best selections that I can view now on iPhoto... but that has limitations (ie, video, large files)... so after doing some reading (and this thread)... i think I know the workflow that I want to setup, but I'm not entirely sure of the best way to go about it.
What I want is this:
Desktop (Mac Pro)... to have EVERYTHING... all the masters, RAW files, projects, libraries etc (due to expanded hard drive bays, plus easy to keep external drives just connected and mount/unmount as I need).
Laptop (Macbook Pro).... to basically be a mirror of my aperture library... but at a much smaller scale. I don't need the RAW files, or the huge masters etc. I just want the images that 99% of the time will be for viewing or emailing, but I'd like to do this abroad when i'm not at the desktop.
I've figured out how to import my iPhoto library into Aperture on the laptop... then I need to move that onto the desktop so I have the last 8 or so years of photos on there... and then I can just merge it into my current on-going aperture library.
So I have 3 questions:
a) use different libraries? will it make things better? on the desktop... i just have one library, that has my personal photos and work-related photos... i split them simply by Project and that works fine enough for me. Will I gain anything if I split into a work-only library and a personal-only library? I dont really want to have to continually switch between the 2 depending on what I'm doing
b) How do I have everything stored (referenced? im still a bit unclear as to how the referencing works in aperture...i just know that sometimes i have the "show in finder" option on a photo... and sometimes I don't).... on the desktop (whether it be an external drive or internal for the RAW/masters).... and then how do I only bring over what I need (including the aperture edits) over to the laptop? If I make changes on the laptop and desktop... how do i sync them to "merge" the changes/which edits does it take preference? from all the reading ive done (including the 2 links above), i'm still really unclear on this.
c) I use some plugins which ive noticed just create new files in aperture... how/where exactly does aperture store those (ie, i often use a de-noise plugin), that will then bring it over to the laptop as well.
Thanks for the help!

  • How do you sync files between computers

I want to sync files between Macbook Pro (2011) and IMac. File structure for Pictures needs to be Identical, not sure what is best method. Do not want to try until I have a good plan.

    Hello AshleyRiverman,
It sounds like you have a directory of folders that contain photos in a specific organization that you want to copy to another computer. You can enable File Sharing to be able to access the photos from one computer on another, and even allow the viewing computer to be able to add photos or delete them, thereby keeping them the same across both computers. This article will help you get that set up and configure the permissions for it:
OS X Mountain Lion: Share your files
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • Sync Mail Between Computers

I am running 2 macs. I have one problem...is there any way that I can have my mail sync on both computers without .mac ... It can be quite a pain having to check then delete the mail on one computer, and then come on my other computer and have to delete all the same messages. Again, I would not like to have to subscribe to .mac ... I know it is a great program from mac, but the fees can be a pain, so if there is any way to do this, I would thank you!!!!
    Thank You.

    Hi.
With .Mac mail, it allows you to run it as a IMAP mail, which stores everything on the mail server.
That is the kind of mail you probably looking for, to "sync" between two or more macs, you basically access your entire mail account, which is on a mail server, via an email program like Mail or Entourage.
So if you do not wish to subscribe to .Mac, then you would have to look for another mail account, that supports IMAP.
Incidently, if you are looking for a free email account, and don't mind accessing it fromt the web, (i.e. web-based mail) then there are a lot for you to choose from: GMail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail
    Cheers

  • Sharing Aperture between Computers

    Hi,
Can anyone please let me know how I can share an Aperture 3 collection across multiple computers?
I have an iMac at home that is used by all family members for downloading photos from various digital cameras into (and I am sorry that I don't know the exact term) a folder that is readable through the finder, rather than into a bucket that is controlled only by Aperture.  This was done as not all of us use Aperture only to manage and manipulate our photos.
I then own a MacBookPro and would like to get photos from the iMac so primariliy I can see them on the laptop, but also so that if I want to, I can manipulate them on it as well and have the changes sync back to the desktop?
You'd think that'd be easy, right?  Nope, not as far as I can see.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks
    John

If you're not keeping the original photos in the library i.e. you've configured your library to use referenced masters, you'll still need to take a copy of (or the original of) the Aperture library (the database and other stuff you don't normally see) and work with that copy/original on your MBP.
The library will be much smaller (as it doesn't contain the masters) but approaches discussed above still apply.
Note also that moving your masters to a NAS will result in potentially annoying pauses while you're working with your photos, particularly if you're accessing your NAS via wifi. There's also a suggestion in the previously linked KB article that storing referenced masters on FAT32 can result in the files occasionally going offline. Another irritant is that your aren't guaranteed to mount the volume containing the referenced masters using the same path (similar to the drive letter assigned by windows). This means Aperture may not be able to find the referenced masters until you manually re-link them (in their "new" location) via Aperture.
I'd also note that no NAS I'm aware of actually lets you choose to format the shared volumes as HFS+ so don't be tempted to put the library on the NAS.
I've tried pretty much everything discussed in this thread. The only reliable solution I found after spending stupid amounts of time on recovering damaged libraries and money on network/NAS/servers is to use a removable disk.

  • Syncing documents between computers?

When I had MobileMe, I used my iDisk to move files back and forth between my home and work computers.  I've just "upgraded" to iCloud, and based on what I'm reading, it looks like iCloud only lets you keep documents in sync if they're produced in Apple's own document suite (Pages, Keynote, Numbers).  Is that correct?  Is there no way in iCloud to sync other documents?
    Thanks in advance!

Never mind, I've figured it out.  Apparently now I can use my Time Capsule as a self-hosted iDisk equivalent, which seems to work just as well as iDisk did.

  • Is it possible to sync catalogs between computers?

I would like to sync PSE 10 catalogs (over my homegroup network) between my desktop computer (Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit) and my laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit), similar to the syncing between a computer and the photoshop.com website.  Is that possible?

If you're talking about synching the photos, and the photos are on the computers, the answer is "No" because the catalog keeps the location information keyed to the drive ID.
If you want to store the photos on a network storage device that's common to both computers, it can be done.  See this FAQ:

  • .Mac failing to sync Contacts between computers--what do I need to Copy?

I have two computers syncing everyhting via .Mac but today after making a lot of changes on one (the Quad), the Powerbook is blowing up with the following statement (which I see is not an uncommon error after reading a lot of post):
    .Mac Sync Notice
An inconsistency was detected on .Mac for your Contacts data. You may want to reset .Mac from a computer with good data.
I have tried following the .Mac support ideas:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iSync/2.0/en/isc9.html
The 'Reset Sync History" did not change the error.
So now, I am thinking of going back to the old fashion way and just manually copy the file from my Quad over. Other than AddressBook.Data in Library/Application Support/AddressBook do I need to copy anything else to get back to a steady state????
    PB 17 1.33 GHZ & 12 1GHZ & new Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I manually copied over entire Address file and then reset Quad first to overcopy .Mac and then PC to reset to .Mac.
Had to do it twice, but eventually I was able to get it to work again.

  • Firefox won't sync passwords between computers

    Hello,
I recently got a new desktop computer and would like to move my Firefox data from my laptop. Using sync, I have successfully transferred my bookmarks. However, my passwords are not syncing.
I do not have a master password enabled and I have clicked the option to sync passwords on both devices. When I use the Options menu to view my saved passwords on both computers, I can definitely see that the many passwords I have saved on the laptop have not made it over to the desktop. I have tried restarting Firefox on both devices. I do also have the latest version of Firefox on both.

and what really pissed me off was he said that he would make sure that all my information would copy and paste over to the new firefox.. yeah NOT, I'm having to go back and add all my tabs/websites. what I do love about Firefox is the pinning of tabs and remembers passwords/information. again Thanks

  • Photoshop CC - Can't sync settings between computers

    Hi!
I have Photoshop CC both on my desktop computer and on my laptop. Now I want to sync the settings to my laptop. But it doesn't work.
Here is a screendump from my desktop computer:
As you can see I'm logged in to my account. But shouldn't I also be listed as logged in under Settings > Syncronize Settings?
Is there something I have overlooked?
I would be thankful for some support.
    Thor

I went into the help menu and signed out of PSCC 2014, and then signed right back into it and it was available for me to save my settings. This worked for me - Hope it works for anyone who finds this post.

  • Syncing aperture two computers

I recently purchased Aperture. Have a MacMini at home that I do most of my photo editing on but I also have a MacBook Air that I use when traveling.  I want to be able to take my MacMini Aperture files with me when I travel. I have tried copying the whole Aperture director from one computer to the other but that didn't work. The pictures appeared but I could not edit them.  How do I move my Aperture library from one computer to another?

    Sorry, illuminor,
you asked a technical question, and I pointed out a possible technical problem.
I have tried copying the whole Aperture director from one computer to the other but that didn't work.
You may want to explain in what way this did not work.
If you copy your complete Aperture library to another computer and open it in Aperture it should work, unless you are having a permissions problem or the original image files are missing.
The pictures appeared but I could not edit them.
Is your Aperture library referenced?  Do you store your original image files outside the Aperture library?  Then transfering the Aperture library alone will not suffice. You will have to copy and reconnect the folders with the original image files as well to the other Mac. Or consolidate your Aperture library (File > Consolidate original image files) - make sure, all original image files are included in the library, before you copy the Aperture library to your other computer. Only, this might blow up the size of your library considerably, and it may be too large to store on your MBA.

  • How do you sync tabs between computers with Mozilla Firefox Sync?

I have some groups of tabs. Can I sync these groups to my new PC?
When synchronization is complete, nothing changes and the group is not synchronized!

    Hi bendorzx,
You can sync tabs, but I am not sure about groups.
There is a bug: [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1011357] that could use some more information on this.

  • Sync calendars between computers allowing edits

Hello. I couldn't find an answer to this, so if there is one and i've missed it could someone please direct me?
I have a mini running 10.5 while my wife is on our PowerBook Ti running 10.4 (meaning different versions of iCal.) What we would like to do is set up a "Household" calendar that we can both edit/view on our machines to stay on top of household chores/bills/etc. Is there a way to do this aside from using third party applications?
Again, thanks in advance and sorry if this has already been answered elsewhere.

  • Where do I find the "On My Mac" mailbox files and can I Sync them across computers?

I want to find out if I can sync them across computers and have the files show up on my desktop and my notebook.

Here's where mine seem to be:
    Macintosh HD > Users > (MyName) > Library > Mail > V2 > Mailboxes > (etc.)
Not sure if yours are there.  I haven't tried syncing them between computers with a program such as Chronosync but it may work.
    Maybe this helps.

  • Synching iTunes between computers

I backed up my files including iTunes from my iMac to Macbook pro.
If I add songs to iTunes on my iMac, and then update them to my iPod, how can I use the iPod to update the new songs onto my MBP?
    Thanks.

A simple way to sync iTunes between computers is to turn on advanced > home sharing in iTunes on both computers.
Once activated on both computers, you can import tunes.
There is also a handy option at the bottom of the iTunes screen that will only display those tunes you don't have on the receiving computer—which you can drag and drop or select import

  • Will the new iCloud feature sync Aperture libraries between different computers?

If there was a Cloud section in the forums i would post this there but there isn't so here it is. Syncing my Aperture libraries between my laptop and imac is a big problem for me right now. Does anyone know if the new Cloud air synching feature coming this fall will sync photos between aperture libraries on multiple computers?

There is now an iCloud community iCloud
But I believe the answer to this question is no, iCloud is not meant to do this type of syncing.
