Sync Apple Lossless but downgrade lossy over 128kbps

I have my iTunes set to downconvert audio to 128k for my iPhone and iPad to save space.
However I'd like to sync Apple Lossless files to the devices as lossless, and only downconvert lossy files that are more than 128k.  Possible?
Reason I ask is this - I bought a Pioneer AirPlay dock yesterday and would like to test the sound quality of Apple Lossless on a decent speaker like the Pioneer.  I believe AirPlay supports streaming Apple Lossless.
I have obtained one album in Apple Lossless format, however I think I'm right in saying to get it onto my iDevice I'd have to untick the "cover higher nitrate songs to 128k", which would force iTunes to re-sync my entire 30GB music library just so I can test 1 album?

That's a very good question and one I've been thinking about recently. The only way I can think of comparing one album to another in this way is to actually compare it on my Mac instead of my iPhone and then decide whether I want to use compressed synchronisation or uncompressed.
As far as I can see it's either all or none when you tick the 128k box

  • Problems syncing Apple Lossless Files with iphone 3.0 and 3.1.

I recently started having problems with syncing apple lossless files with my iPhone 3G. They were recording I made using Logic Pro and the same as have been working with no problem since I got my iPhone last year. Although the songs would play and indicate the correct total time in iTune, on the iPhone they would indicate a total time of over 2 hours even though they were 2-3 minute long. The same files converted to mp3 did not have this problem. Since updating to iTunes 9 and 3.1 on the iPhone, the problem is worse. The Apple Lossless format files do not show up on the iPhone at all even though they are fine in iTunes. mp3 format do not have this problem.
Anyone else having the same issues?

    Hi Allen,
I would like to thank you very much for your help with Forte 3.0 and WTK 1.0.1 beta.
Thank you for the pointing me to the ForteJ2MEGuide.pdf file. It is very useful document.
However, even following it I did not succeeded in accomplishing my task.
I was able to follow the instructions and create, compile and run the Hello midlet which
was generated by the IDE. My previous problem related to the fact that I did not create
project and midlet suite for the midlet. After doing all of that the generated midlet worked. However, it was not what I wanted.
First, the instructions in the guide only described how to generate new midlet. I tried
to add the existing midlet to the current project. Unfortunately, the IDE always picked
up the generated template, not my code.
Second, when the generated midlet started to work, it was difficult to debug it. I set
up the breakpoint, but the IDE did not stop at it. I think the reason is the compiler
did not have debugging flag set up. Do you know where it is possible to set it up?
So, at the end I still cannot accomplish very simple task which should not be very
    difficult at all:
    1. Use my own code to create a midlet.
    2. Compile and execute the midlet and see how it runs in emulator.
    3. See step-by-step execution of every line of my code and the value
of every variable in the code.

  • Rip music with Apple Lossless but compress when sending to my Ipod

When I pull my music off a cd onto my computer via Itunes, I want to use Apple Lossless compression. When I want to sync the music to my ipod I want to compress down to 128kbps. How can I go about doing this?
    Rob

I use two libraries - a 'Lossless' library and an 'iPod' library. I use a script (http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/ituneslibrarymanager.php) to toggle between them. This allows me to stream lossless at home over my network without being confused by two sets of each song.

  • Syncing Apple Lossless Files As Something Else

    Hi all,
I am a proud new iPod Touch owner with 60+GB of lossless music in my itunes library, automatically organised, in ALAC (Apple Lossless) format. As my new iPod only holds 8GB, I would like to sync (as much as possible of) my music to the ipod in 192 or 256kbps, whilst keeping the lossless files as well for playing off my computer. Apart from having two computers with two identical yet distinct libraries, one Lossless and the other not, is this at all possible?
    Thanks,
    Ross

On-the-fly conversion is only available on the iPod shuffle. The iPod shuffle (probably because of it's limited capacity) has the option to "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC". This option is not available for any other model iPod. For the larger iPods the files have to be converted in iTunes first or indeed have to have been imported in a compressed format prior to transfer. so if you want to keep your files in lossless format you would need to make a separate copy of those files in another compressed format if you want to sync those to your iPod. You could use either a separate library to sync the iPod or sync it from a distinct playlist of compressed songs within your existing library:

  • Apple lossless quality over time

I have noticed my apple lossless files have been loosing quality over time. How can this be? This has to be impossible since it's a lossless format. My question is - Could this happen if there is a bug in the itunes software? Or perhaps I have a virus or something. I would like for apple to look into it and see if its true or not.

If the tracks are in Apple Lossless format it means they will not be protected by DRM and as such you can therefore test playing them in an alternate program like VLC.
I doubt it is your issue, but relatively recently Apple added a new feature to allowing syncing Apple Lossless tracks to an iPod, iPhone, or iPad and during sync for them to be downscaled to 128kbit AAC format. The originals in Apple Lossless would still be kept on your computer but this allows using lower quality and smaller versions on your iPod (etc.) device which has less space than your computer.
While your computer might be in a quiet room with good powerful speakers, your iPod (etc.) is going to be used on the go with little headphones and as such can stand using lower quality versions of the music.
Ideally, Apple would let you choose 256kbit AAC for this but they don't.

  • Burning a CD downloaded from iTunes with Apple Lossless

As the subject says, I am trying to figure out how to burn the highest quality audio CD from an album purchased from iTunes. I've seen other articles that speak of the Apple Lossless, but have not been able to find it on the program anywhere. Does anyone know, is it possible to burn a high quality audio CD, using Lossless or something similar, from something bought from iTunes?
I tried to search the forums for an answer on this and came up empty, my apologies if I missed something and this has come up previously. Thank you for your help!

Regardless of what format the songs in the library are, when you burn a list of songs using the Audio CD setting it is automatically formatted to normal CD standard so the disc will play in regular players. Converting your iTunes Plus (AAC) formatted songs to lossless prior to burning would make no difference to the sound quality. You would only have a quality difference if the songs had been ripped/created in lossless format in the first place. Converting from a lossy format such as AAC to a lossless format such Apple Lossless can't add back the information already discarded when the file was compressed.

  • How do I convert WMA lossless to apple lossless

I've recently switched from Windows and I have over 400 cd's ripped in WMA lossless format. Is there a program (free or reasonably priced commercial) that will run on the mac and batch convert these files without loosing tags or album art?  I used goldwave on my last PC to convert to MP3 however it didn't support apple lossless.
                                                                                                                                                                                             Thanks

I have had this same exact problem for about 4 years now.  I keep checking online every few months but never have any luck.  What gives?  Is there nobody out there that can program an application to transcode efficiently while maintaining metadata including album art?
I bought and owned over 1,000 cd's by 2003 when I decided to rip them all with WMP (Windows Media Player 9) on a PC into WMA Lossless without DRM (Digital Rights Management).  I used the slow but detailed error correction so it took a long time to complete this project.  Many of the CD's were from different countries (as I had been living in different countries) so some had different songs and album art than the US Versions.  As a response I had to continually over-ride the built in suggestions for metadata from WMP and had to manually type in song titles and search for album art online, then copy and paste it into the folder the files were in.  WMP would then import that file into the WMA metadata. It took a lot of evenings but it was worth it and I had the best music collection I knew of while traveling for another 5 years.   I was ahead of the curve as far as digital music went.
In 2008 I switched to a MacBook Pro and haven't had easy access to my music collection sense.  In 2011, I ripped another batch of about 150 new CD's I've bought into Apple Lossless but now have to keep 3x music collection folders.  1) WMA Lossless, 2) VBR MP3 (converted for itunes without art), and 3) Apple Lossless.   I have thought about switching back to a PC but I do like my mac so I'm stuck with no options.
There are very few applications that can transcode WMA Lossless to Apple Lossless, less that can do so without bloating the file size to almost double, and none that keep the size similar to WMA Lossless while maintaining the album art already saved in my music collection's folder hierarchy.  (To clarify itunes on mac doesn't, Flip4Mac doesn't help, Auditri does not, VLC does not, Song bird does not, Pro Audio Converter does not, easyWMA does not.  I've even installed VMware (virtual machine to run Windows on my mac) to try dbpoweramp and no luck.)  And with all these trials I've also noticed it takes just as long to transcode on my Intel i5 MBP as it did on my AMD Athalon XP PC in 2003.
I'm very confused so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Will new ATV stream apple lossless?

I put all my CDs in itunes in the Apple Lossless format which synced to my old AppleTV because I wanted my music in the highest quality. The specs say the new ATV supports Apple Lossless, but my question is: does that mean it will stream in that high quality format or support it? Are they synonymous? I like the idea of digitizing my music and having assess to any musical tracks but don't want to sacrifice the music quality.

I am in a similar situation as the original poster--I have my entire library in apple lossless. Part of this library was created in apple lossless from CDS directly in iTunes, but some of it was converted to apple lossless from a previous FLAC library. I read a different thread from 2008 that apple lossless files that were created using a conversion may not stream on ATV, even though they work on iPod, iTunes, etc. Is this still the case with the new ATV? If not, I'm off to buy one tomorrow!
As an aside, I wonder will consumers ever be able to download music from the iTunes store in lossless format? I am still buying CDs and ripping because this is not available....
    Thanks for the help!

  • Want to replace Wav Files with Apple Lossless in the same folder...Scripts?

    Hello!
I have about 4,000 wav files (wow) that I digitized from Vinyl. I organize my media folder myself (I have the organize option unchecked in preferences) and most of the songs are not properly tagged. I would love to convert the wav files to apple lossless and have Itunes save the file in the same folder from where it originated. I havent found a way to do this yet. Its weird to me that I can select a song in a playlist and hit "Show in Finder" and it knows exactly where it is yet when I convert files to apple lossless they end up in the "unknown artist-unknown album" folder. Anyone have any ideas or is there any scripts that can do this for me ? thanks so much!!
I had found one script that deletes the original wav files but still the new apple lossless are still put in the unknown album folder.....
    Zeke

When iTunes converts a file, it does not allow you to direct the location of the output file, but rather places it according to the Artist/Album tags, which in your case are unknown.
Almost every other conversion tool allows you to direct the location of the output. There are not a huge choice that run on the Mac and support Apple Lossless, but a good one is Max.

  • Syncing Apple TV  and iPhoto

I am trying to sync my iPhoto library to my Apple TV, the progress bar in iTunes says Syncing "Apple TV", but it is not actually showing the files syncing, and my MBP fan is running and my Apple TV is hot, and it is taking way too long. Did anyone else have this happen? Does it just take a long time for it to sync? Thanks!

I have a 25,000 library of photos in iphoto and syncing isn't happening. I noticed that the librarys would show the size of the library while it appeared to by syncing and then they would disappear. sooo after trying this several more time... I rebuilt my iphoto. (also ran permissions...)
    Still not syncing.
I created a completely new iphoto imported some photos into it and that is working great.
I also had luck with aperture.
If anybody comes up with why my larger library is having problems, I would love to use that one instead.

  • Library in lossless but want iPod to be lossy (not lousy)

I like to keep my iTunes library on my iMac in full lossless format and would like to put the songs onto my new iPod in high-quality lossy (like mp3) format. How can I do that with iTunes? Do I need to set up 2 distinct libraries each with the different format? If so, How do I convert the songs already in lossless to mp3? Thanks

I just did this for my sister's iPod - all my music is in iTunes at 256 AAC (virtually CD quality). What I did was to create a separate playlist for my sister's iPod so I could fit more onto the nano (if yours is a Classic, I wouldn't bother - the drive is large enough to hold a lot of music at Apple Lossless quality, the latest one has a 160GB HD!) Then I converted tracks to 128 AAC, copied it over to the nano manually, then deleted the playlist to avoid having duplicates on my iMac.
If you are using Apple's white earbuds, there is no point having music at any higher quality than 128 as you won't hear the difference. But if you get a decent set of earphones then you would notice it.
In the end its an equation that boils down to:
"how much music do I want on my iPod?" vs "how important is quality to me?"
and that's a choice every iPod has to face and make.
Oh - and the actual conversion is done through Preferences > Advanced > Importing, then just select the format you want. It works for converting existing tracks in your Library as well as ripping CDs.

  • I have bought itunes songs on an ipad with my daughter apple id. i would like to back them up on the same computer I sync my iphone with using my apple id but they will not transfer. Both iphone and ipad have only been synced on the computer mentione

I have bought itunes songs on an ipad with my daughter apple id. i would like to back them up on the same computer I sync my iphone with using my apple id but they will not transfer. Both iphone and ipad have only been synced on the computer mentioned since they were purchased. Is there any way to get the ipad music transferred to the computer?

And they were definitely purchased from the iTunes store, they show on the account's purchase history (Store > View Account on a computer's iTunes, or you can view the last 90 days purchases via http://reportaproblem.apple.com) ?
You could potentially log into the account on that computer's iTunes (Store > Sign Out to log out of your account, that will then change to a Store > Sign In option) and redownload them by clicking on the id towards the top right of the iTunes screen and Purchased on the popup :
But that will potentially tie that computer to that account for 90 days : Manage your associated devices in iTunes - Apple Support
Or do you have a different computer that you could redownload them on and then copy them over to that computer via a flash drive or memory card, and then add them to its iTunes via File > Add To Library ?

  • How to keep synced library on Apple TV but delete synced items from iTunes

I use a Macbook Pro and space is limited, so does anyone know of a clean way to break the sync connection without deleting the existing synced content on Apple TV? I'd like to move items over, and then delete from my iTunes library to save space. I will also later want to add new items to be streamed, but without causing any past synching to be lost.
Can this be done by simply unchecking the "look for Apple TV" box in iTunes? If so, how can I then stream new content from the same Macbook Pro without causing past synced content to be lost? Since the syncing is quite slow over wireless network, I want to maintain commonly watched items on the apple TV but still ave the ability to stream a new item, from the same macbook pro if possible.

Thanks for the information. Just to be sure I'm clear: after I synch the one library (which I'll keep on an external hard drive where I have more space), is it OK to keep it around and make future changes that I want synced (and then just connect that library for synching whenever I want to change what is synched)? When I change back to my on-board library (on the Macbook pro), will that library not be synched automatically? Must I do anything on the Apple TV or in iTunes, other than start up with the different library, to ensure that my previously synched changes are not superceded?
Are you effectively saying that the synching of Apple TV is specific to a single iTunes library, even if different libraries are successively used in iTunes on the same machine? The manual has basically no information on how to preserve things synced, once synced, unless you're using the simplest model of wanting your iTunes library to be actively mirrored on the Apple TV. It is very painful to see things inadvertently deleted from Apple TV, given ow slowly things move over wireless g networks...
