Sync Data etween a PC and Mac

Here is the situation:
I have a MacBook running OSX and a Desktop running Windows XP with an extended partition with all of my data on it - (pictures, music, office documents). I want to be able to automatically sync this data on the Mac. This way when my Mac is connected to the network all the files are updated, and when I take my MacBook with me I still have all my files (and they are the most recent.
Is there any way to set this up?

I haven't tried this but it looks like what you're after <https://www.foldershare.com/info/aboutFoldershare.php?>.
Hope this helps! bill

  • Syncing outlook over a iMac and Mac Book Pro

I'm having some trouble figuring out how to sync outlook over a iMac and Mac Book Pro without connecting them by a cable each time.
Had the Mac Book first and did a migrate to the iMac. Everything is working fine but when I open an email on one it doesn't show that its already been opened on the other.
Is there a way to get outlook to update itself, or a program out there that will do this for me.

It sounds like you're using a POP mail account. POP accounts do not send any information back to the mail server, so another computer downloading the same mail will have no idea what has been read and what hasn't.
IMAP accounts do have two-way communication with the server, so you will be able to sync read mail, as well as store folders on the server and have them accessible to both computers.
Check with your mail provider whether they have IMAP access. You may have to change the server addresses and ports that Outlook uses, but they will be able to give you that information.
Caution: if you end up removing the POP account and adding it back in as IMAP, make sure you save your inbox and sent mail to a local folder first - otherwise it'll be lost.

  • Here's how to sync your Notes between iPad and Mac

This is not immediately obvious and took me several conversations with various AppleCare techs before I finally got the solution as to why my notes on my iPad where not syncing to my Mac Pro. The problem seems to be that you can't sync if you only have Notes on your iPad. You must have notes on your Mac to which unlike Calendar and Contacts don't have corresponding standalone applications, iCal and Addressbook, respectively. Notes exist within Mac Mail. I only had Notes on my iPad and none on my Mac Pro. In this event here's what to do to get setup and syncing:
    SETUP:
    1. Go to System Preferences on your Mac > MobileMe > Sync > and make sure Notes is checked although, syncing via the cloud apparently won't happen until iOS 4.2.
    2. With Mac Mail launched, if you've never created a note in Mac Mail, in the left column you should see:
    MAILBOXES
    ON MY MAC
    RSS
or if you've created some notes on your Mac Mail, you'll see:
    MAILBOXES
    REMINDER
    - Notes
    ON MY MAC
    RSS
The key is you have to have REMINDERS created. So if you don't have it created, when you sync your iPad and Mac, the iPad doesn't know what to do as there's no "receptacle" for it's notes on your Mac.
So in Mail, in the top of the window create a new Note, click the notepad icon to the right of the New Message.
Now REMINDERS will be created in Mail's left column with this new note. You can simply put "Test" or whatever and click "Done" in the upper left of the Note's window.
    3. Plug your iPad into your Mac, in iTunes, in the left column click your iPad under DEVICES the Info tab in the top. At the bottom of the page is "Other" > click: Sync notes. Do NOT click the checkbox "Notes" in the next section under "Advanced"
    4. Click "Apply" at the bottom of the page and your iPad and Mac will begin to sync. It may take awhile as I believe it is doing both a sync and backup.
Once this process is done, you'll see your notes fully sync'd on your iPad and Mac. Yea! but there's more...
    5. Notes created in Mac Mail show up in 2 places: your MAILBOXES > Inbox and under REMINDERS > Notes, and if you delete the Mac Mail note in your inbox, it deletes the note in your REMINDERS.
This is unfortunate and not great interface design IMHO and should be remedied.
Luckily the last Tier 2 AppleCare tech I just spoke with had a workaround for this, which is:
    6. Create a new mailbox inside Notes under REMINDERS. Click Notes, then go to Mailbox > New Mailbox... in the top of your monitor screen.
Under the location pulldown it should show a notepad icon and On My Mac.
For the Name, I called my new mailbox "iPad Notes" Then click OK.
Then a triangle appears next to Notes mailbox to access this new subfolder (iPad Notes) and you then drag your now sync'd notes from Notes under REMINDERS to your "iPad Notes" subfolder under Notes. Now your left column will look like:
    MAILBOXES
    REMINDERS
    -Notes
    --iPad Notes
    ON MY MAC
    RSS
Doing this drag to "iPad Notes" will remove the note(s) from your inbox, but keep it in your REMINDERS and thus be available for Syncing, which currently can only be done with your iPad when plugged in via USB to your Mac.
Apparently, in iOS 4.2, you'll be able to use MobileMe to sync Notes just like Calendar and Contacts. We'll see.
I hope this is helpful. It took me awhile to get all this set up, and being that I am not an AppleCare tech, if you have questions instead of asking me, I recommend you call AppleCare and review with them. Let them know I got the above info from Tier 2 support.
Once iOS 4.2 and Lion come out, all this may, hopefully be a simpler process, but as of this writing, pre 4.2 and Lion, this is now working on my iPad and Mac Pro.
    Good Luck.
    Steven

Thanks ,,, but when I "Go to System Preferences on your Mac > MobileMe > Sync > and make sure Notes is checked"
I CANNOT check the "Notes". It is NOT highlighted. MAYBE because I am NOT logged-in to mail.mac.com?
Is this why my Sync Notes between MacBook Pro and iPAD 2 does NOT work?
    How do I fix it?
Also I continue to get Error Message "smtp.mail.com" password not accepted.
I DO NOT know my mail.mac.com password.

  • How can I share data between WinXP Pro and Mac OS 10.8.3 via wifi

How can I share data between WinXP Pro and Mac OS 10.8.3 via home wifi.

    MartyP wrote:
Or is there a problem with both OS's writing stuff to the
~/Home/Library folder that may be incompatible?
Yes, big time.  Mail, for sure, has a different file/folder structure, and would not be happy.
Plus, a number of apps (Apple and 3rd-party) are "Sandboxed."  That's a security feature, to prevent malware or bad coding from affecting things it shouldn't.  Some of their files, including the preferences files, aren't even stored in the same places!
Or to other places I'm not aware of?
Probably.  If you have two versions of the same app, they may or may not expect the same data setup.
To have one User folder for both OS's would save a lot of drive space
Not if you use some or all of woodmeister50's suggestions.
But I'm also not sure how I'd use Time machine with such a set up.
Just as you do now.  By default, Time Machine backs-up everything (except things like system work files, most caches and logs, trash) for all users and all internal drives & partitions.  By default, it excludes external drives.
You can change those defaults, of course, via TM Preferences > Options.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #32 for details and considerations of multiple drives.
    Presently I backup with . . . clones to other HD's
Good.   Yes, clones are different.  You need multiple "tasks" to back up multiple drives/partitions.  But once set up, that shouldn't be a big deal.

  • Syncing iPhone to both MobileMe *and* Mac w/ merged data

I'm almost sure I've gotten this working before, but for the life of me, I can't seem to figure it out now. I want to sync my contacts and calendar to both my MobileMe account and my computer (which also syncs to my MobileMe account) without having two sets of contacts and calendar items on my iPhone. I want to do this because most of the time I use my iPhone in an always-connected mode (via either 3G or WiFi), so sync from my iPhone to MobileMe for additions and changes works great (and syncs down to my Mac without having to connect my iPhone), but I also often travel internationally where my iPhone is offline for long periods of time, so sync via a cable to my Mac is the only way I sync up contacts and calendar. I don't want two completely separate sets of contacts and calendar items on my iPhone, I want them merged as one but still synced to both MobileMe and my Mac through iTunes.
Possible? If so, what are the steps to make it work?

If you do both, then it will give you two copies.

  • Contact Sync Incomplete: BB Torch 9800 and Mac

I installed the BB desktop manager software on my MAC running the latest OS (mountain lion) but when I try to sync the contacts from my Torch 9800, the data went to my SKYPE contact list.
Worse than that, all it shows is a name and phone number.  I need company address, e-mail addresses, etc...  This BB used to use an electronic sync w/my company but I turned off electronic transfer as instructed so I could get the list on my MAC.
Anybody else run into this and found a solution?  Thanks!

    Update:
It appears data also went to my MAC Address book and all data is there.
Any idea how to remove it from my SKYPE section and just leave it in addresses?  Thanks!

  • All my firefox sync data has been deleted and I don't know why. Any way to restore it??

I had alot of bookmarks and passwords on my firefox sync. However, I rebooted my computer a few days ago and now when I clicked on "Merge sync data" my data still does not appear and it seems like everything has been deleted. Can I restore this data?

I have tried restoring it but it only shows dates for the last 5 days which doesn't help. I rebooted my computer (formatted hard drive and reinstalled windows) a few days ago so any backup files in my computer are gone. I thought that there are backup copies made on the Firefox server but obviously I was wrong!
I don't see the point of Firefox sync if you can't view your bookmarks etc online and if there aren't backups made on the server.

  • Problems syncing iCal btwn iPod Touch and Mac running Snow Leopard (10.6.8)

Last fall I purchased an iPod Touch 32 GB, now running 6.1.2 iOS. I have an iMac 2007 running Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  I was looking forward to being able to sync my many iCal calendars and take it on the road with me, so that I could make appointments and have them then be available to me on my Mac. I have synced using usb cable, and can get contacts, music, apps synced just fine: but the Calendar has been rather choosy about what it will sync. Sometimes it will give transfer to the iPod all the appts on one calendar (for example, Medical, which lists all my medical appts) and sometimes it will only give me some of those, with no apparent pattern as to why some are transferring and some are not. Other calendars never sync at all. In the beginning I was able to make an appt on the iPod and have it transfer to the Mac,but it stopped doing that within the first month of purchase.
I have spoken with Apple Care twice on this topic, and both times the conversation ended with the saying they would have to send this up to someone more knowledgeable, who would assuredly get back to me. I have not received any contact from their supervisors/other departments to work on this. The first Apple Tech Support person thought it was due to the new iOS, and assured me they were working out bugs on that, but further updates have not addressed the issue.
Most folks seem to think the best solution is upgrading to Lion/Mountain Lion and syncing through the Cloud. But I *like* Snow Leopard, and what I've heard/seen about the newer operating systems isn't making me want to jump on that bandwagon unless there's really no other way around it. I've even seen some problems syncing calendars through the Cloud.
Has anyone found a solution for this that allows me to continue to run Snow Leopard?
    Many thanks.
    A

Problem fixed. I have 3 wireless mice connected to my Mac Mini through a USB bus, and started to get conflicts, disconnected all of them, re-connected my Apple bluetooth mouse and it all snapped back in to place, also didn't help that earlier, my wife caught the cat walking across my keyboard. That problem solved by closing off the office when I'm not there, and cat expelled from the area.
    Everything working as normal.

  • Contact sync issues between iphone 4gS and mac address book

I have a miss match on contacts in my address book and on my iphone.
My iphone has 70+ more contacts and syncing does not over-ride the contents of my address book.
I found a link that told me how to clear the address book, dlete contents, cache settings etc etc etc .
All followed and deleted. Hooked my iphone up and synced with iTunes and same issue, more contacts on my phone than on my mac.
    Any ideas?
    thxs

i think the issue is with the address book not the phone.
my phone has all i want, i cant get it to overide the data/merge or anything on the mac.

  • Is there any way to sync POP mail between iOS and Mac devices via the cloud?

The title says it all.  I have Comcast email and would like to keep three devices in sync with email like I do with calendars and contacts.  I use an iPad, iPhone, and a Mac Mini and am having a hard time configuring the three to stay in sync.  It seems that a .me account is needed for cloud email, which I have, but that only seems to send via the .me outgoing server.  So, while a .me account can retrieve the POP mail, it doesn't send outgoing mail correctly for me.  Maybe it just isn't possible.

When I send mail from my mobile devices, it comes from my .me account.  Same for my mac.  But, I don't care because no matter which email the recipient responds to, I get the response.
I use my .me account now as my primary account, but I have a ton of folks who still use my cox account as my primary email address.  Most don't even know which account the email is being directed to.

  • Auto Sync iTunes Libraries between Macbook and Mac Mini?

I download and store all of my music on my Mac book. But I would like to know if it is possible to make it so that, if I add 3 songs to my macbook, my Mac Mini will reflect the same changes, and vice versa. Kind of like what Mobile Me does with iCal and Contacts.
So If I add a song on my Macbook, my home network would transfer the song to my Mac Mini and update the iTunes library?
And I'd rather not use an external network drive to keep my library on, because I need my music physically on my Macbook.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks in advance.

There are a few utilities specifically designed to help you sync iTunes across different computers. You could begin your research by having a look at these for instance:
    TuneRanger
    SuperSync
    syncOtunes

  • How do I sync my calendar between iPhone and Mac on Mavericks? The postings I've seen so far are not showing me how to do this simple thing! Apple used to be easy to use - not so much any more

I am trying to sync my calendar between the mac and my iphone now that I have upgraded to Mavericks. I understand that I have to use iCloud (which I am not at all excited about) but I'll be damned if I can find out how to do it.  I've read several postings in the community but they point me to broad troubleshooting pages and I can't find anything that simply tells me how to get my calendar into icloud to begin with and then how to sync.  i was pretty happy syncing dircetly through itunes.  I am feeling very sour about Apple right now.

Actually it is pretty easy to do through iCloud,
    On your Mac(s)
    System Preferences > iCloud
Be sure the services you want to sync through iCloud are checked
click on Account Details and be sure your Apple ID is correct
    On your iPhone
    Settings > iCloud
Account -- Verify the Apple ID is the same one you set in System Preferences on your Mac(s)
turn the services you want to sync throug iClound or ON. These should match the ones you set in System Preferences on your Mac
    On your iPad
    Settings > iCloud
Account -- Verify the Apple ID is the same one you set in System Preferences on your Mac(s)
turn the services you want to sync throug iClound or ON. These should match the ones you set in System Preferences on your Mac
That is literally all there is to it. The first sync will occur when your iPhone or iPad is plugged into power and on WiFi. After that any change made on one of the synched devices will appear on all of the other synched devices the first time they have an internet connection.

  • Can I use Lion Server to sync files from my MBP and Mac Pro tower?

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro and a Mac Pro I'd like to sync files between. I also have a Mac Mini that I'm considering for an OS X Lion Server install if it could help sync all my files across computers. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated!

There is a simple way for unmanaged clients.
To point an unmanaged client to your update server, enter the following command in terminal:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://<your_server>:8088/index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
(replace <your_server> with the dns name of your update server.  If the unmanaged client runs snowleopard or leopard, adjust the url accordingly. For snowleopard clients, remove the "lion-" part. For leopard clients, remove the "lion-snowleopard-" part

  • Transferring Data form both PC and mac to new iMac G5

Saturday I can go and collect my brand new iMac G5.
My father can get his as well.
But as I used to work (at home) on a PC. I'm looking for a fast (and easy) way to transfer my data to my new iMac.
3 different computers are in use.
    My iBook G4 at work.
My PC (windows 2000, with ethernet card and firewire-ports).
My dads old PC (windows 95, no ethernet card and no CD-RW-drive)
    How should I handle this?
I was hoping to make a network connection with both Ibook and PC to my new mac. Do I need a cross cable for the connection Imac - PC? Or will a normal ethernetcable do the trick? Or should I even use a router?
Is firewire an option for the PC as well or will this give problems?
And how should I make my PC recognize the mac or vice versa?
And any suggestions concerning the old PC without network-card?
Perhaps placing the harddrive in my PC with networkcard? I don't think there is place left in the oldest PC to install a network card.

    2. the windows 95 without network? The computer has 2
USB ports, but if I'm not mistaken windows 95 doesn't
support USB, so a memory stick isn't an option.
Is there perhaps a possibility to create a network
over parallel or serial ports?? Bit like over
    firewire, but slower?
In theory you can use the serial port, but this would be impractical.
I would suggest buying a cheap ethernet card ($10) and network it.
You could remove the drive from the Windows95 PC and install it on the newer PC.
