Sync documents across 2 macs

Is there a way to sync folders across both of my mac computers? So that when I make an alteration to a document it will be updated on both computers?

There has to be an easier way than doing it with that external program though isn't there?
Easier than Dropbox?
I don't know of anything easier than:
1) Install Dropbox, and enter your Username & Password
2) Save files into Dropbox folder.
it seems easy enough to have 2 computers sync up and mirror each other. Isn't it?
To do syncing properly is actually very complicated. When you're dealing with people's data, you have to build in so many safeguards to avoid data corruption, overwriting of the wrong files, connecting through firewalls, routers, multiple networks.
That's why Dropbox is so good. It simplifies everything down to a few clicks.

• Sync mailboxes across macs

Hey,
Just wondering if it is possible to sync mailboxes across macs without having to subscribe to .mac?? Is it possible if they are on the same network but NOT connected to the internet??
Crazy

There are 2 different things at work here:
The .Mac Mail sync does not sync the contents of mailboxes that exist on your Mac. It only syncs Mail rules and Mail preferences across different Macs. It does not sync messages.
IMAP or .Mac type access to .Mac email account. If all of your folders exist on the .Mac mail server and you have your Mac configured to access the .Mac mail account as a .Mac type or IMAP type, you will be able to see the same messages in those folders regardless of which Mac you are at.

• Why has iCloud stopped syncing documents across devices?

Just recently, my iPhone has stopped syncing documents with my iPad. They are both on wifi yet they still wont sync with each other. I have gone through all the settings on both devices, and I can't seem to find anything wrong. I have even tried syncing both of them with itunes, but yet the documents still wont appear on both devices. Any recommendations besides restoring both of them?

Had the same problem. iCloud failed on my iPhone and on my iPad2.
Turned out, in my case, to be a corrupt contacts-database. I have 176 contacts on the iCloud-website, but only 50 of them turned up on my iPhone, In addition to all of the problems mentioned in this thread.
This is how I solved it:
- Synced iCloud contacts with my Outlook 2010 (PC): http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/pc.html
- Copied the new Outlook iCloud contacts-folder to an empty or new Outlook contacts-folder.
- Deleted all contacts on my iCloud web-site.
- Waited for Outlook iCloud-folder to sync to empty state.
- Copied contacts (from the second step) back to the Outlook iCloud-folder.
- Waited for sync to copy contacts to the iCloud web-site.
- Did a factory reset on my iPhone to be able to reinsert my iCloud-account. Everything works fine!
Easier on my iPad: just removed/added the iCloud-account to get it to work again

• Sync podcasts across Macs

I'm putting this in here as I think it's where I'd find the people who will know a solution to my problem, if there even is one.
To keep this short, I have an iMac, a MacBook Pro and an iPhone. I'll often start a podcast at home on my iMac, listen to it on my commute with my iPhone, and then listen to it on my MacBook Pro at work. At this current moment in time I have to manually sync everything. I have to keep track of what podcasts I listened to and then delete them from whatever device they are still on. I have to set play times before I resume a podcast on another divice.
I don't want to do that.
So what are my options? I have iTunes Match/iCloud but as far as I'm aware that's not currently going to help me. When it comes to podcasts I have no particular loyalty to iTunes as long as whatever system I use requries less effort than I currently have to expell.
I've seen a few podcast managers for iOS that sync across your iOS devices, but so far nothing that syncs from iOS to iTunes (or another app) aside from iTunes itself.
To be honest, I can understand why Apple didn't inclues this in Match. It would put loads of short-term storage on their servers and just eat up bandwidth day after day after day if they did what they're doing with music. But they don't need to... Podcasts are already fully available any time anywhere online.
I just need something that tells my computer, "You are now subscribed to this podcast. Go download the lastest five episodes, you're 37 minutes into the first one."

It's iTunes that's syncing with multiple devices. That's why you have to sync back to iTunes, then sync other devices to iTunes.
I have a Mac Pro, an iPhone, an iPod and an iPad (actually had two of them for a while). Podcasts are in sync on all of them.

• ICloud syncing Documents on Mac, Ipad, and iPhone Not working

              Hi all!,
Can someone help me understand something. I'm working on a page document and it synced to icloud fine. I can see the document on Ipad and iphone BUT i can't figure out how to see it on my Macbook Pro. Can someone give me some ideas what i need to do so i can take all that mobile working on to my desktop ?
Anyone that knows how to do this step by step would be a great help.

Make sure Documents & Data is turned ON.
The problem is that there is not a single application that makes use of this on a Mac. Not even iWork09 v9.1 where everybody thought it would sync to the cloud and to iOS5 - it does not.
Iwork Users need to open Safari, go to www.icloud.com, into the iwork section there in the browser and drag and drop the files from Mac to the cloud this way to have the documents in the cloud and have them available onto their iOS5 , too.
No way around that clumsy solution.
"documents and data" is currently limited to iWork for iOS only. ( Sketchbook Pro for iOS and a handful of mini apps start using it too, on iOS that is all - not on Mac ) .

• Is there a way to automatically sync documents across devices in iCloud?

I thought that iCloud would automatically find my Pages documents and sync them to my iPad and iPhone.  But I find that I must first download the doc from the cloud, edit it and then replace it to the cloud every time.  Surely there is another way to do this.  Otherwise I might as well email it to myself.
Does anyone know of a better way?  Am I missing something?

Oops, I forgot to update my profile. I am using Mountain Lion. I think I've figured this out now.  Apparently I must open my documents that are in the cloud FROM the Pages application, not from iCloud.  Thanks for replying.

• Syncing Firefox across Mac and iPad mini 2

Hi there,
I do a *lot* of research and web browsing on my Mac Air with Firefox (google chrome seemed to consistently freeze my macbook air forcing me to hard restart). I currently have 2-3 windows with a good 30 tabs or so open on each. (I know, I know, judge me all you want! haha). I also love my speeddial. In the interest of making my own experience seamless across my ipad and my mac air for productivity purposes, is there a way to replicate my firefox browsing on my ipad, so when i go between devices, I can, for exampl,e have tabs that I'd like to share from my ipad appear in a new window or as a new tab on my macbook? Similarly, can I have my existing firefox speeddial from my mac air be transported to Mercury browser on the ipad?
Thanks for your help!
Kevin

There's no way to do it with firefox because there is no firefox web browser for the iPad.
As to exporting/importing tabs and bookmarks from firefox to mercury, you'd need to dig into how mercury works to see if they allow or support that.
You may want to experiment, because I'm not sure if the iPad has the system resources to maintain 30-60 open tabs on any browser

• Can you just sync playlists across 2 macs with identical libraries

can you just sync playlists across 2 macs with identical libraries. i have done a carbon copy of my home mac itunes library to a work mac.  i'll then switch itunes match on on the home mac, and i am assumign i won't need to redownload everything to my work mac.   my question is though, is it possibnle to use itunes match to just sync playlists as really i dont want to have to upload my contetn to the cloud as its nearly all not goign to be on itunes match in the cloud (obscure stuff).  so if i keep libraries in sync myself, can i jsut use match to sync my playlists?
cheers

No you can't. Match is an all or nothing service.
However, depending on the size of your library and your upload speeds, you may be surprised at how quickly the match/upload process takes, and by the amount of stuff that does match.
Depending on how big an issue the subscription fee is to you, it may be worth giving it a go. I use match mainly to keep my iTunes libraries in sync and it is the solution that I've been looking for for years.

• Failure to sync across .Mac

I have a set of calendars that sync to two computers across .Mac. I made a change in one, and then received a notification of conflicts that need to be resolved on the other. I resolved the conflicts and then did a sync, but each time, I get the notification that there are still conflicts to resolve.
Any ideas how I can get these calendar changes to propagate better?
Thanks.

The short, though not explicitly always accurate, answer answer is: it takes time for changes posted elsewhere through the push-pull nature of the synchronization framework to be distributed across your synchronization pool. How much time, depends largely on the composition of your pool, and how—and how often or at what intervals—you synchronize.
When you see a phrase like "Refreshing contact groups and calendar information…" appear in iSync, that indicates that iSync is interacting with the truth database on your machine, in anticipation of posting additions, changes or deletions to the Address Book, iCal or a supported device. In terms of your 'local' machine where this database is maintained, the Address Book, iCal, Entourage, iGTD, Daylite or other applications, along with iSync, are also 'local' and often interchange data in a manner which is not obvious to users, whenever an application is active in the foreground or background. Other components, such as additional machines, .Mac via .Mac Sync, Plaxo or similar synchronized 'services,' mobile handsets and smartphones and other supported devices are essentially 'external' and changes made on them may take longer to be fully distributed.
In the case of two machines, one must interact to push data to and pull data from .Mac using .Mac Sync, before it is available to be pulled from or pushed to the other machine. In addition, the data does not move directly from iCal to .Mac to iCal: it actually moves from iCal to the truth database on one machine to .Mac to the truth database on the other and to iCal on that other machine. It must complete the transition along that path before it is 'visible' in the second copy of iCal.

• Any way to sync my 10  MAIL accounts across macs and on iDevices? Thanks in advance for you help

Dear friends,
over 21 years of fumbling with mac (PowerMac 7100/66) I have rarely bothered to get tips but I cannot seem to find, though I cannot believe this, a way to sync MAIL ACCOUNTS (and the keychain too ... but that is secondary) across Macs and iDevices.
As I piled up email accounts I am in a position, am sure not entirely unknown to some of you fellow Macusers, to have about 15 email accounts that more or less frequently I need to monitor. As things stand, with the killing of the otherwise pretty bland MobileMe, I am forced to enter those account for every new user or hard-drive or iDevice I have while.
I think that is ridiculously cumbersome and am convinced that there must be a third-party or a mean to have the mail accounts synced across different Macs, partitions and/or iDevices using Lion and iCloud.
Can any kind soul spare a valid tip to save me from the boredom of serial e-mail settings?
Thank you very much in advance for the help you will provide.
Sincerely,
FrankieC

Yep, and it still didn't work.
But I figured what I did wrong: I was selecting both the text and the heart, and then I was doing the whole Object>Wrap Text>Make thing, as opposed to just selecting the heart and doing it. Once I did it, I moved the heart around on top of the text, and it "made room" for the pic, wrapping itself around the heart.
Thanks so much, and thanks A MILLION for being so patient.

Hello
I was wondering if there is a way of syncing the sent mail folder across my iPhone, iPad and MBA?
For instance if I send an email from my Air using OSX Mail and my Apple email address. I have no record of this email having been sent when I look at the sent mail boxs on my iPhone or iPad. And the same if I've sent the mail from the iOS device it doesn't show up on the laptop sent mail folder?
Can't see a trick around this, any ideas?
Thanks
This solved my question by dawnrazor  on Jul 31, 2012 11:39 PM
okay found it...
this only pertains to iCloud accounts
iOS devices SENT folder defaults to the device. So an email sent from your ipad will be kept on the iPad only. to change this you need to dig a bit...
on your laptop:
open Mail preferences, select Accounts at the top and select your iCloud account. and select mailbox behaviour, tick the check box for sent messages, make sure the delete option is set to never.
okay on each iOS device:
settings / Mail,contacts, calenders / iCloud / account / advanced / advanced / sent mailbox
the default for sent mailbox will be on my ipad/iphone. Change this to Sent Messages.
do this on both iphone and ipad and now your sent mailbox will be mirrored across your ipad / iphone / laptop / iCloud website....
Easy when you know how...
See the answer in context
I have this question too (1) Reply Categories: Mail

• Where do I find the "On My Mac" mailbox files and can I Sync them across computers?

I want to find out if I can sync them across computers and have the files show up on my desktop and my notebook.

Here's where mine seem to be:
Macintosh HD > Users > (MyName) > Library > Mail > V2 > Mailboxes > (etc.)
Not sure if yours are there.  I haven't tried syncing them between computers with a program such as Chronosync but it may work.
Maybe this helps.

• How to stop syncing Documents & Data?

When unchecking Documents and Data in System Preferences/iCloud I get the threatening message that
all synced Documents and Data on my Mac will be deleted... Shouldn't that be the other way around?
Anyway, it's not what I want: I just want to keep the Documents and Data on my Mac as they are right now,
and I don't want them in iCloud any longer.
Can anybody enlighten me on how to accomplish this?

Well, the ones that are synced to iCloud (or kept there) when the item "Documents and Data" is checked in
System Preferences/iCloud. Also the ones that are threatened (by OS X Lion) to be deleted on my Mac when
I uncheck that item. Heck, I dunno, I suppose there must be documents there, otherwise OS X (or iCloud) wouldn't threaten to remove them, right?
FWIW, I signed up for iCloud when I got my iMac last year, but now on reflection I don't like the idea of my files or backups to be on some server somewhere in the world. So, a wider question is: how does a person get out
of iCloud altogether without losing any files. It was easy getting into iCloud, but I find it difficult to get out of it.

• Documents from Mac added to iCloud do not show up in Pages on iPhone 4S

Synopsis: Dcouments added to iCloud through Safari on Mac do not show up in Pages on iPhone 4S. New documents created in Pages on iPhone do not show up in iCloud. I expect the doucments to appear on my iPhone soon after uploading them from my Mac to iCloud through Safari, and to appear in iCloud soon after switching to the document listing in Pages and leaving the app. Several hours passed by without transfer happening, and I have waited a day and reconnected to Wi-Fi to wait several more hours. Still nothing shows up either in Pages on iPhone, or in iCloud in Safari on Mac. They are listed with their sizes and extensions (.pages or .pages-tef) in the iPhone Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage > Pages, though they don't seem selectable from there.
Software versions and Settings:
Mac
Mac OS X 10.7.2 (Lion)
Safari 5.1.1
Pages 4.1
System Preferences > iCloud: signed in; everything selected, except Photo Stream (no iPhoto).
Everything seems to work, except Find My Mac is flakey.
iPhone 4S
iOS 5.0
Pages 1.5 (417) [no other iWork apps]
Documents:
the defualt "Getting Started";
a test document with default name "Blank" and content with the word "Testing", shown with upwards arrow in upper right corner; tried renaming to "Just testing", no transfer resulted.
Plus button + offers: Create Document; copy from iTunes, iDisk, WebDAV; no iCloud (probably because it's supose to be auto);
Settings > Pages:
Use iCloud: ON
Restore: OFF; I have tried this, it automatically turns itself off after restarting Pages. No obvious changes result in Pages.
Settings > Wi-Fi: ON, connected to a network; tried several networks around town, as well as at home with a Time Capsule router.
Settings > iCloud:
everything ON, except Photo Stream;
Documents & Data:
Documents & Data: ON
Use Cellular: ON; also tried OFF initially.
Storage & Backup:
Manage Storage > Pages:
three documents in iCloud are listed, one of which I had created before iCloud on iPhone 3GS, and deleted from iPhone 4S after documents added to iCloud from Mac weren't showing up as expected;
their sizes are given;
suffixes are .pages for the two created on Mac, and .pages-tef for the one created on iPhone 3GS (before iCloud);
iCloud Backup: ON; successfully backs up everyday;
Email works, contacts are synced, calendar works, and everything seems fine except access to documents.
Approaches:
Software updates
Updated all software, no further updates available. Please confirm with aforementioned version numbers.
Add and Remove Documents
Used Safari to add two documents to iCloud with its menu for Pages of iCloud's iWork section, one at a time. Documents were originally created in Pages on Mac, and continuously edited since then. Explicitly saved documents (Save a Version on Lion) before uploading. Documents appeared listed in web page without problem.
Have tried deleting a document on iPhone that was originally created with Pages on iPhone 3GS prior iOS 5 as a way to jog the listing on iCloud. Listing on iCloud in Safari on Mac continues to show document deleted from iPhone. [Before deleting document, I had updated iPhone 3GS to iOS 5 and signed into iCloud a couple days before getting iPhone 4S, then immediately used the restore from iCloud feature for the iPhone 4S in the Apple retail store, updated all apps on Mac and iPhone, then deleted the document in Pages on iPhone.]
On iCloud in Safari on Mac: deleted the two documents uploaded from Mac; added the same documents again; edited documents on Mac, then uploaded and chose "Replace documents"; removed documents again; added them again. Never showed up in Pages on iPhone, even after waiting a day.
Have used iTunes to add the same documents to Pages on iPhone. Successfully opened documents in Pages on iPhone through plus button + > Copy from iTunes. Deleted documents from Pages's document listing, though they remain in iTunes section.
Removed documents of same name, though older copies, from Pages in iTunes for the iPhone.
Created a new document with Pages on iPhone, simply added one word "Testing" and then switched to document listing. New document has name "Blank" and an arrow in the upper right corner indicating it will upload next time an internet connection is established. That hasn't happened regardless of being connected to Wi-Fi and cellular for several hours. Next day, reconnected to internet with both Wi-Fi and cellular, the new dcoument "Blank" still is not in iCloud when I visit the site in Safari on Mac, and still has the arrow in the upper right corner in Pages on iPhone.
iPhone 4S Connected to Internet
Connected to Wi-Fi several hours each day, and cellular all day except from about 10pm to 7am when I switch it to Airplane mode. Always connected to Wi-Fi and cellular when attempting to access the documents in Pages on iPhone.
Restart iPhone and Pages
Have double-pressed Home button on iPhone to reveal along the bottom of screen a list of apps currently open, touched and held an icon to reveal the close badge on all icons, and selected the close badge on Pages, waited a few seconds, then started Pages again.
Have held On/Off button until "slide to power off" appears, then powered off iPhone, waited a few seconds, then held button again to start. Have done this with Pages either open or closed, per previous note. Still no change in document listing for Pages: test document still has not gone to iCloud, documents in iCloud still have not shown.
I think the only thing I haven't done is a complete restore.
Question: Can anybody point out what I might have missed or haven't tried that would get the documents from iCloud to Pages and vice versa?
I'm not looking forward to several hours of restoring, but if I must…
TIA

Okay, I'm not sure what finally jogged it. It seems to be finally working.
After downloading any documents I could from iCloud to my Mac, I deleted all the documents from iCloud. I also deleted all documents from Pages on iPhone, except the original "Getting Started" document.
I duplicated the "Getting Started" document (Pages on iPhone) and edited it by moving the butterfly to the left on the same page, then switched to the Documents view. It had the arrow in the upper right corner of "Getting Started Copy", but no progress bar and nothing showed up in iCloud.
Then, I think I went to Settings > Pages > Use iCloud: NO. Went back to Pages and got a dialog in the Documents listing:
         You are not using iCloud
What would you like to do with the
         documents currently on this
                        iPhone?
Keep on My iPhone
Delete from My iPhone
Continue Using iCloud
I tried keeping them, then going back and turning it back on in Pages's settings, then going back to Pages. Finally something different happened: a progress bar on the "Getting Started copy" document. It never seem to finish, and would disappear if the phone went to sleep. I tried the whole sequenece again with same result, and nothing on iCloud.
I then tried Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data: OFF, and agreed to "Turn Off Documents" and have all documents stored in iCloud deleted, because as far as I could tell there weren't any documents in iCloud at this point anyways. I went back to Pages and the "Getting Started copy" suddenly disappeared.
So, I went back to Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data: ON, and did the same for Settings > Pages > Use iCloud: ON. Oddly, Pages now tried to download "Getting Started copy" even though it really shouldn't have existed anymore. I tried iCloud in Safari on Mac and saw there now was a document by that name, but when selected it said "Updating…" on it. I deleted it in iCloud, and it disappeared (I think, or I deleted it) in Pages on iPhone.
I gave up and waited a bit, maybe an hour or two.
I made sure all the settings were how they needed to be, noticed no documents in iCloud, and only the original "Getting Started" document in Pages on iPhone. I duplicated that document, and that's when it seemed to actually work. First, the arrow in its upper right corner appeared briefly, then a progress bar appeared on it instead, then the progress bar actually moved and completed. (I think. Some indicator happened. Everything is kind of fuzzy at this point while I'm writing this and juggling a couple other technical tasks.) Then I checked iCloud in Safari on Mac and the document was there. Wow.
So, I immediately tried uploading to iCloud from my Mac the two documents I had been trying, one at a time. Each time the document succeeded in iCloud, it suddenly appeared in Pages on iPhone. In fact, the second document began to appear in the documents listing in Pages on iPhone just before the progress bar in iCloud completed.
I tried opening each one in Pages on iPhone, and iCloud immediately updated each one with a preview and as downloadable. I downloaded them to the Mac and they opened fine. [Admittedly, the Pages version from iCloud of the "Getting Started copy" with the moved butterfly was a little different in Pages on Mac: it had the butterfly on the previous page underneath everything; the PDF version of that document had everything correct.]
Anyways, the document listing between iCloud and Pages on iPhone is working now.
I thinking it might have helped to clear out all the documents in iCloud and deleting all documents in Pages for iPhone. However, be sure to at least email copies from Pages on iPhone first if you don't have any backups. I think it might also have helped to turn off Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data: OFF, so it'll send that signal to delete the documents in iCloud, even if there's already nothing there. I don't know for sure, but that's probably the way to start from scratch. Oh, and maybe wait an hour or two after that before doing anything again, then turn Documents & Data: ON, and Pages > Use iCloud: ON, and then start by creating a new document in Pages on iPhone.
I'm just glad I didn't have to do a Restore from iTunes. And now that it's working, it's so instant between Pages on iPhone and iCloud! This is seeming like it will definitely be great, now that it's working.

• How do I sync audiobooks across to my iPhone?

Can anyone tell me how I am supposed to sync audiobooks across to my iPhone?
I have a whole bunch of them, and they are all plain old MP3 files, with a .mp3 file extension, but I have changed the "Media Kind" for them, by selecting File > Get Info, and then choosing the Options tab. Under there, I change Media Kind from "Music" to "Audiobook".
Having done that, they do all show up under the Audiobooks section in iTunes on my Mac.
I have my iPhone set to auto-sync, ie: "Manually manage music and videos" is unchecked.
I have "Sync only checked songs and videos" checked, and the relevant individual audiobooks that I do want to copy across are checked.
I just want a few at a time, so I only have a few checked.
Needless to say, Apple doesn't supply an Audiobook tab when viewing the iPhone settings in iTunes when the iPhone is plugged in.
I have plenty of space left on my iPhone. I do not get any error messages when attempting to sync. iTunes on my mac has no problems locating the files. But still, the audiobooks will not copy across.
The only way I can get them to copy across is to create a playlist for them, copy them from the Audiobooks section into this playlist, then go under the iPhone's settings/preferences when it's plugged in, and check this new playlist that I've created.
Then they will copy across to the iPhone.
But that's a bit of a hack-job. Is there no way to "correctly" copy across an audiobook to an iPhone?
I am running the latest versions of everything:
Mac OS X 10.5.5
iTunes 8.0.2
iPhone OS 2.2.1

I'm such an idiot...
Well, actually, I'm not entirely to blame on this one...
I just figured out that Apple has buried an "Audiobook playlist" checkbox under the Music tab in the iPhone's settings / preferences.
I didn't have this "playlist" checked.
So even though the individual audiobooks themselves were checked, because the main playlist itself was not, nothing was copying across.
So I'm the fool for not noticing the box wasn't checked — but can you blame me when Apple decides to hide the "Audiobooks" section under the "Music" tab instead of in its own dedicated tab, like they do with "Video", "Podcasts", etc.
Why does "Podcasts" get its own section, but "Audiobooks" doesn't?
How is an audiobook any more like "music" than a podcast is?
Now where's that rolls-eyes emoticon...?
