Sync Documents Folder on two Mac via iSync

Hi there,
i have two OS X 10.4 Intel Mac's and want to sync my documents folders on the two computers via iSync (You see i although have a .Mac Account).
My idee was to move the documents folder on to the iDisk. It should by possible to work offline with my documents via the iDisk utility.
It should be possible two sync the the two documents folders on the macs via iDisk.
Is my approach correct? How can i move the documents folders to the iDisk?
Where is the path of the documents folder stored?
Thanks for your help...

  • Sync a folder between two users on the same computer.

I would like to sync a folder between two users on the same computer so that they are always the same when I access them from either user.

then place this folder somewhere where both users have access to like in /Users/Shared. then there is only one folder to deal with and you don't need to sync anything.

  • Directly Connect Two Macs Via Ethernet

This has certainly been answered before, but a quick search didn't give any results. So here goes ...
I wanted to connect two macs via ethernet. I use the mount tool in finder "connect to server" all the time with machines on a network, but I've never done with with two macs directly connected.
So I connect them and my first instinct is to check the IP address of the machine I want to connect to. I then go to "connect to server" and type it in using the AFP protocol, but it doesn't work.
At this point I'm stumped and not sure what to do. I don't use the "network" item in the finder sidebar very often but I clicked it, and sure enough the machine I want to connect to was listed, and I was able to connect / mount.
So here's my question ... if I wanted to use "connect to server" tool, or even mount it manually with the mount command, how would I do it? Is it using AFP still to mount and the IP address is just bogus? Something else going on?

But I'm telling you I tried using the IP address ... here, let me try again ...
I find this address on the machine I want to connect to: 169.254.177.122
I put this into "connect to server" on the machine I want to connect from: afp://169.254.177.122
It spins for a while, then says it can't connect. Strangely, if I do a cmd-i on the machine in the network sidebar, it says: nfs:// automount ... into /Network
So are you sure putting in the ip should work? If so what am I doing wrong?
Okay ... plot thickens. When I cmd-i after I connect, it indeed says it is an AFP connect, but it gives the "local" name, say powerbook.local. But then, if I "ping powerbook.local" if gives me back the same IP I tried in connect to server. Huh?
    mbp:~ rjcarr$ ping powerbook.local
    PING powerbook.local (169.254.177.122): 56 data bytes
Weird. It isn't that big of a deal ... I just like to know what is going on.

  • Is it possible to connect two Macs via USB ?

Is it possible to connect two Macs via USB just like Firewire back in the day via Target mode or is there something similar? I am asking this because about 2-3 years ago I would normally image Macs via Target Mode. I used to have a regular Macbook running 10.6 along with a customized-ready-to-go .dmg image saved on the Desktop. Whenever I needed to put that image into any Mac I would simply connect the two Macs via Firewire, I would then press "T" at startup which will get me in Target Mode, I would then see the disk appear in the desktop of the Mac I had the image. I would then copy that image to the T mode macbook using super duper. Can this still be done through USB with new models and if so will I also need to press T at startup ?

No, USB connection does not qualify for this, only firewire and thunderbolt, as I read (but cannot test, for the time being I have only one such mac around).
This is why the short series of alu MBs (2008) are not qualified for target mode either.
p.s. What ‘new models’ do you refer to?

Is it possible to use the time machine to sync a folder on my Mac with an external hard drive?

    Not using time Machine.

  • Can I sync my phone with two Macs?

    Howdy,
I have a Mac at home and a Mac at work, both of which I keep sync'd with .Mac. I have a bluetooth adaptor on the Mac at home which I use to sync with my Sony Ericsson T637. If I put a bluetooth adaptor on the Mac at work, can I sync my phone with either Mac interchangeably? That is, if I sync my phone with my home Mac, then come to work and sync it with my work Mac, will iSync do the right thing? Will it realize that all the data is the same and not try to duplicate everything, even though it's syncing with a different computer?

It's not a good idea, because the complexity of such synchronization events. While ideally you should be able to attach your other devices to any workstation and synchronize at any time - if each workstation is, in fact, kept up-to-date through .Mac - in reality, such data exchanges are not reliable.
You are best advised to avoid any action which complicates an already relatively complex, limited and - at times - unstable and unreliable - technology. The best approach is to pick one workstation as a sort of 'synchronization server' to which all other devices are attached, either through USB, Bluetooth or, in the case of .Mac, wireless or terrestrial ethernet.

  • How to sync a folder on a Mac and a PC ... how and with what limitation?

Most of the time I work on a Mac (when I work from home ... love the Mac), but sometimes I need to work on a PC running Windows XP Professional (when I m in the office company policy).
My question now is how I can automatically sync my work folder between my Mac and my PC? I would prefer the sync process to run on the Mac, but I am open to suggestions.

Where is your work folder being stored? On a flash drive or on a server on your company network? Somewhere else?
Provided your company's server is set to allow "offline files" Windows XP has built-in sync services. You can usually select a folder on the server and right-click it and then look for the synchronization option. This works great for Windows. Possibly your files could be synchronized to a flash drive.
On the Mac side Synchronize Pro from Qdea has been a reliable way for our company to synchronize files between two servers during migrations. It would probably be worth looking into.
Some folks might suggest a .Mac account, which will allow you to store files on .Mac and then have your Mac automatically synchronize. I suggest against anything that stores company files on the Internet, but it's your prerogative.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Mirroring folder on two Macs?

I have a Macbook Pro and iMac on the same network.  I'd like folderX on the MBP to be basically mirrored on the iMac.  If the MBP goes down or I need to send it in for repairs, I want the iMac to always have an updated version of folderX so I can continue working on this content from the iMac.  Then when I get the MBP back, I'd like the MBP to be updated with latest changes from the iMac and then have the MBP once again become the primary and ship folderX updates to the iMac.
I believe a Time Machine from the MBP to the iMac might work?  I do have a 2TB TimeCapsule and TM is in use on my MBP.  But can I only have 1 TM per computer?
    Any other suggestions?

@benwiggy: Unfortunately, I discovered that goodsync resets your job options and renames the job if you add new folders/files.  I have no idea why someone would want to use such a program.  It was good before I found that option.  I'm now using bit torrent Sync.  Hopefully it doesn't have this limitation.
Sync authorizations are done over the Internet but does it send files through the Internet or across wifi?
Goodsync? Never heard of it. As I said, I use BitTorrent Sync and it works flawlessly. However, I wouldn't rename the folder whose contents I wanted to sync, though. If you need to rename or add/delete folders, then make sure they are in the container folder that you are syncing.
BT Sync sends data over your LAN, using Ethernet or WiFi. It doesn't go beyond your router, unless you configure it to do so, so that you can sync two Macs between different locations. There are no servers that your data gets stored on.

  • Can I sync IPhoto albums between two computers via ICloud?

I have some pictures on my MacBook Pro, and some on my desktop.  Other than offloading to a hard drive and trying to duplicate the two drives, is there a way to create albums and have them show up on both computers via the cloud??

No you cannot sync an iPhoto library between two macs. If you do you will corrupt the iPhoto Library file. iPhoto is a consumer level app, and this feature is not supported.
What you can do is share the photos but not the library. Each machine will need to have it's own library file.
The easiest way to do it this is to enable sharing (in the iPhoto Preferences) on both machines (one sharing the library, the other looking for the share). When you do this the shared library will appear in the Source (or left-hand) pane and pics can be dragged from that to the library in the other machine.

  • Sync iPhoto '08 between two macs

I am trying to sync iPhoto '08 between two of my macs, but can't seem to get it, unless I copy the whole library file (all 10gbs of it!).
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    ckg1999:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can't sync two libraries like you can two folders. That's because the data inside the library's database file needs to be the same and you can sync the contents of data files. The only way to keep two libraries the same is to use iPhoto Library Manager to copy new events on Library A to Library B and copy new Events on Library B to A. You would have to be sure to keep the Events as they were imported so you would know which are new and need copying to the other library. If you were to move photos to an earlier event what I propose wouldn't work.
Using any other syncing application will only mess up both libraries.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Getting iCal to sync with iCloud for two Macs, and a 3G iPhone

I currently have a Macbook and MacMini both running 10.7.2, and just started using iCloud this week to sync contacts, iCal, bookmarks, etc. I thought I initially had problems with iCal as I was getting two copies of every event showing up on my MacBook, but then realized I had two sets of calanders, ("on my mac" and "iCloud"). After I unchecked the "on my mac" calanders, everything appeared normal.
The problem I face now is with my 3G iPhone that can't run iOS5, and thus, no iCloud. My iCal on my iPhone is set to sync with my "on my mac" calanders, so with those unselected, the events are not showing up on my Macbook, and thus, aren't being synced to my MacMini.
My question is, can I have my 3G iPhone sync to my iCloud calanders everytime I connect it to my Macbook to sync via USB, instead of syncing with the "on my mac" calanders as it is currently doing without have iOS5 capabilities on my iPhone? If not, is there a way to have iCloud keep syncing with my "on my mac" calander list, so that it is always up to date, and data from my iPhone will be synced over to my iCloud calander list from the "on my mac" calander list?
I'm just trying to figure out if I'll be able to transfer new iCal dates I create on my 3G iPhone over to my iCloud calander list, and ideally, vice versa.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I understand that iCloud won't run on it or with it. I'm just trying to figure out if there is a way to sync the "on my mac" calanders (which sync to my iPhone iCal everytime I connect via USB) continually with my iCloud calandars so the two are always up to date.

  • How can I sync important folders between two Macs?

I've had a Macbook Pro for about a year and a half and love it so much that this Christmas I decided to buy myself a second Mac. I got a refurbished 24 inch iMac and just set it up last night. During the setup it occurred to me that there are certain folders on both computers (documents, pictures, audio, downloads, etc) that I would like to have available and synchronized between both computers. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to do this. Does this functionality exist in Snow Leopard? If not, are there any 3rd party apps that will solve my problem?
    Thank you for reading.

no. not unless you want to use a command line tool like rsync.

you can use Chronosync or ForkLift. also, you can sync not directly between computers but via a cloud. there are many services that do that. there is apple's own mobileme. another very popular one is DropBox.

  • Is it possible to sync one iPhone to two Macs? One for the music library and one for contacts, emails etc

At home I have two Macs, one for work and another which acts as a sort of entertainment hub storing all my music, podcasts and videos as well as being for the family to use.
Is it possible to sync my one iPhone to both Macs, with the work one just syncing things like my contacts, emails, calendars and apps while the other Mac would sync just the podcasts and music to the iPhone.
Would this cause any problems and what is the correct way to go about this?
Thanks for any help, tips and advice.

As wjosted said, it's possible, but it's not recommended.
Email does not sync with a computer. Only email account information is. Mail itself is synced with the mail server.
Why not just sync with the computer you keep your media on and use iCloud (or whatever cloud service you want) to sync the rest? Seems simpler to me.

  • Can I sync iphoto library between two Mac's?

I have two Macs (an iMac and a Macbook Pro) and want to sync the iPhoto (6.0.6) library between the two so whenever I change one the other is updated. I thought about using iDisk but my library is apx 5gb. I am new to Macs- is there a utility built into OSX 10.4.9 or hopefully some freeware or very-cheap ware... preferably automated. Thank you very much.
