Sync drifts when capturing in FCP 7 in DVCPRO-HD

Very puzzling - captured clips in DVCPRO-HD drift out of sync. We are capturing entire 30 minute tapes shot with the Varicam, played in Panasonic 1400 deck, ingested through Kona LH via HD-SDI, onto large external eSATA HD. We have done this hundreds of times on the old G5 with FCP 6 in FCS2, with never a problem.
Now since installing the new FCS with FCP 7 in our new 8-core Nehalem mac Pro, the capture drifts out of sync. Tried many settings, cant get it solved. New Kona drivers, everything updated, prefs trashed, etc. Note that we are on Leopard not Snow Leopard.
thanks for any help. Maybe we should go back to the G5 and fcp 6!

Firstly, this is not a 29.97 vs 30.0 issue.
You are right...because 720p is NOT a 30 frame...nor 29.97 frame...format. It is a 60 frame format. 60fps running at 59.94. And you are trying to convert that to 29.97...might cause issues.
So when most of us say "30" here in america, we really mean "29.97."
I think only Americans responded to you. A guy from Wyoming, one from Denver, and me from Los Angeles. We know what you mean.
FYI the Varicam 27F can be set up at a system level to run at either 59.94 or 60.0 but it is almost always set to 59.94 here in the US.
Yup...I know that...
However, we generally do not use the term "pulldown" to describe the extraction of the "30" actual frames from the 60 frame cadence
OK, true...sorta. Any sort of frame removal is called PULLDOWN. But is isn't as complex as 30 to 24...pardon, 29.97 to 23.976.
we have been using the workflow I described for 2 or 3 years, with excellent results.
And now it doesn't work? So, what changed in that time? Anything? If you are doing the same thing you have been doing for years, and then suddenly it stops working, then the culprit will be anything you did differently, or any new software, or new version of software that you "updated" to.
So this worked with FCP 6, but not with 7. Hmm...and you are sure that everything is set up EXACTLY the way you did before? Are you missing some setting somewhere? I don't do this conversion, so I'm not sure where to check.

  • Monitoring audio in sync with video when capturing in FCP studio

Is there a way I can monitor audio in sync with video when capturing in FCP Studio? I know you can plug headphones into your tape deck but that sound is not in sync with the video in the capture window due to time delay. I tried plugging the headphones into my Powerbook but could not get any audio coming through these, nor audio through the Mac's inbuilt speakers.

The preview checkbox is ticked and the audio monitor indicates that sound is being picked up (the levels rise and fall) but I still can't hear anything! The audio/video sync on the external monitor is ok, but because there is a time delay between that and the video capture window, I can't use that as a reliable monitor for sound sync. If I could resolve the video sync problem there, then I could monitor the sound through the external monitor.

  • When capturing HD, FCP breaks up the raw footage into many separate parts

I'm using FCP and trying to capture some HD footage. When I try this, it captures, but all my footage (about 30 mins worth) is broken up by FCP into smaller segments, so instead of one single 30 minute file (which is what I usually get) I get 45 separate chunks that range from 2 minutes long to only 3 or 4 seconds. Obviously, this doesn't lend itself to very easy editing.
I've captured HD without this problem before. I've also captured this exact same footage to iMovie HD without any problem, so I'm pretty sure it's not my tape. Anyone know why FCP would suddenly start doing this?
    I'm using a G5 iMac 20 with 2.5 megs of RAM and OSX 10.4.9
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I'm just using a Canon HV-10 as my "deck" and importing via FireWire 400.
I think the problem was my external capture drive. I have only firewire 400 and I don't think it was fast enough to capture, so it broke it up. I could capture the entire thing in one shot if I captured direct to my internal hard drive but not to the external.
Anyone know how to fix this beyond capturing to the internal drive and then transferring it over to the external one? I bought a 1 TB external firewire drive specifically for my HD projects and I'd like to be able to capture directly to it, if at all possible.

  • Audio sync lost when capturing

I have recently encountered a problem while log and capturing the past two tapes. This is something that is new to me because in my previous 3+ years of using FCP I have never came across this. I am using the Sony DSR-11 and FCP 4.5 with 4 GB of Ram on a G5. I have corrected the problem within FCP by moving the video +7 frames to match up the audio, but was wondering what I can do to fix the problem while I capture. If anyone has encountered such a thing or knows the fix please let me know. I'm not sure if it's the deck, computer, or hard drives.
    Thanks

One way to test is to do a capture using the camera as the tape drive.
If it syncs ok using the camera and using the DSR-11 it does not, there is something in the way the canon wrote the data that the sony is having difficulty reading.
What was the format of the recording - straight NTSC (or PAL) DV?
How are you monitoring the disfunctional sync? Are audio and video going out firewire to their respective devices or do you have video going out firewire and monitoring audio off of the computer audio out?

  • Audio sync drifting when recording

    Hi everyone,
Has anyone experienced something like this?
I'm recording a webcam.  A Polycom CX5000.  I have it set to record the encoded video and audio with a limit of 30 minutes (creates a new file).  While doing the encoding, I get no notification of any dropped frames, yet when I play back the resulting .FLV file, the audio drifts out of sync in the first file after about three minutes.  When the recording went over 30 minutes, FMLE started a second file and for some reason, the sync pops back on.  Is there a bug in FMLE or some setting I can do to avoid this?   I'm encoding on an i7 PC so I don't think it is a hardware issue.  For encoding I was using 15fps, 640x480 and audio at mp3 224.
    Thank you,
    Mark

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
    >1. Does the sync problem aggravates over time or does it remain constant from 3rd min to 30th min?
It aggrevated over time.  You can't really notice it until around 3 minutes into the video.  I watched it again and it looks like it the sync fluctuates slightly. Goes out of sync, gets back in sync (or nearly) and then goes out again.   Listening on headphones I hear tiny, split second drops outs or glitches (related?).
    >2. Did you observe the sync problem in the live stream also?
This time didn't even do a live stream.  Had similar issue two weeks ago that was live stream and file save.  Assumed the issue was due to network issues.
    >3. Can you reduce the file split time to let's say 5 min and reproduce the problem again?
Will be trying this today or tomorrow.
    >4. Which audio device are you using? Is the audio and video device coming from the same device?
It is from the same device (I think.)  I am remotely troubleshooting for someone so I'm not 100%.  It's a Polycom CX5000.  The first one we have.  We previously had a Microsoft Roundtable which is the same device.  The device names come up differently though so that's why I'm not positive.  The Video device is currently listed as Integrated Webcam (which must be correct as I'm getting the right picture).  The audio though lists "Microphone Array (IDT High Def..." something..    That might be the laptop's built in microphone?  If so, that might be the issue.
    >5. If you have a different audio-video devices, please try with them and come back with the result.
    Will let you know.
I'm hoping it is #4 as that would be an easy fix. I would find it hard to believe Adobe released a product that couldn't keep audio and video in sync, right?

  • Unknown file error when capturing in FCP 6

I capturing from a DVD, using AJA Kona card, component in. I can preview the video in Log & Capture, but when I try to Capture Now, I get an unknown file error and cannot capture. Just a regular DVD, analog capture. I've tried creating new projects. I save to an internal HD with over 300GB of available space. What am I missing?

If it is a data file drag and drop it on your desktop and open it.
If it is an encoded movie file can you play it? If so you can use the software I suggested to rip it from the DVD.
    Give it a go.

  • Converting 2:3:3:2  to 2:3 when capturing to FCP?

Hi.. I'm having a bit of trouble capturing a few tapes for a current project. Most of the footage was shot in the standard 2:3 pulldown in 24F mode, on a Canon XL-H1 (using DV, not HDV). However, the camera was in the shop one weekend, and we used a loaner of the same model. I didn't think to check the pulldown, and it turns out to have been set to 2:3:3:2.
I'm using Sony HVR-M15U decks to capture. Though the decks are equipped to handle various pulldowns, I can't seem to get the footage to capture properly to FCP.
What is the best way to convert the footage to the proper pulldown? I'm pretty sure that I can playback from the camera with no problem. Should I try to use the cam as the deck for those tapes, or is theres some combination of decks and project settings that would allow me to avoid this (I try not to use cams as decks, if possible).
    Thanks,
    Cesare

So you used the DVX100 for the loaner? Far as I know only Panasonic uses the 2:3:3:2 pulldown method.
Are you trying to edit in a 23.98 timeline? If not, then just capture regular 29.97 for everything and edit in a 29.97 timeline. Either way, you captured 29.97. That is the only way to capture on tape.
You can capture 29.97 and use Cinema Tools to convert the footage after capture. There is a reverse telecine for the 3:2 pulldown. Not sure if Cinema Tools has a conversion for 2:3:3:2 pulldown, but you can capture using the DV-NTSC Advanced Pulldown removal setting.

  • DV Audio drifts after capture - What's the Solution?

    Greetings,
Pardon me if this is covered territory, but other posts don't seem to address this scenario directly.
I continue to have audio sync problems when capturing DV footage.  I'm using the same camera for capture that was used in the field (Panasonic AG-DVC60).  When clips are captured, audio is already out of sync, before placing them on the timeline.
I've checked my settings before capture:
    Selected DV Capture
Selected Panasonic as the camera type
Using the same scratch disc (external media) as the project (not HD drive on my iMac).
What's odd is that the 1st DV tape I captured handled audio perfectly.  I logged 1 clip, then captured it, audio is fine.
On the 2nd DV tape, I logged several clips, then batch captured.  I also checked "Scene Detect", and "Abort on Dropped Frames".  Could any of these options be causing audio to drift?
In the past, I've used iMovie as a work-around, since it stores video in DV codec (video and audio combined in 1 stream).  Whereas Premier saves Video and Audio as 2 separate streams.
Have any of you found the solution?  Thanks in advance.
    Blessings.
    Doug Palmer

Whereas Premier saves Video and Audio as 2 separate streams.
This should not be the case.
Premiere captures DV material in .avi (pc) or .mov (mac).
As for drifting audio, that should not be the case either.
Have you monitored the tape output outside of Premiere?
Are you certain the audio sync trouble is not recorded on the tape?
I also checked "Scene Detect", and "Abort on Dropped Frames".  Could any of these options be causing audio to drift?
These options should have no bearing on the audio sync.
What version of Premiere are you using?

  • Capturing "Now" FCP automaticly making multiple clips

When capturing "Now" FCP is cutting a single clip into multiple clips during capture, on its own. Any suggestions?
    HDV 1080i60
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi,
it does seem unlikely, but sometimes FCP breaks up continuous shots when working with HDV. Most of the time, this happens towards the end of a shot, so I end up with 3-4 seconds of the first shot.
Very rarely, that happens with MiniDV, too. The TC seems to be fine, but there may be minor problems, and FCP seems to be a bit picky when it comes to that, so you get a TC break when (at least on your deck) there seems to be a continuous TC. And HDV is even worse than DV. But that's just my own experience. Maybe its as simple as your playhead being clogged up?
    Cheers,

  • Fcp 5.03 halts when capturing

when capturing g5 halted and random happens, and another problem i set still frane time to 1 but after i imported the still frame sequence and i find the length of still frame's length is not 1 and in fcp 4.5 it works fine and i was troubled i would be if you anyone helped me great thanks to you and tell me why

Welcome to the forums, blankmac. When you say you have random halts when capturing, do you mean that the capture stops but you still have the media, or do you mean that the program halts/quits, or do you mean your entire computer stops (kernal panic)?
What is the length of the imported still?

  • P2 card video out of sync when importing to FCP

Go into the LOG AND TRANSFER preferences, that sprocket menu on the upper right, and uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN.  It really needs to be defaulted to OFF.  It causes so many issues.

  • Video source sync when imported in fcp loses sync

    Hi
I have an issue I can't figure out:
When played in Quicktime player (format hdv60i) the video and audio are in sync but when imported in Final Cut Pro 7, they lose their sync.
I made my sequence to the exact specs as the original movie file and tried different settings but it is always out of sync.
Another thing, in FCP 7 the movie file does not want to play until the end but when I tried to make a Pro-Res 422 LT version, the out of sync issue remain but now the file play from start to finish.
    I am speechless...
    Anyone help???

    Hi,
I made my sequence to the exact specs as the original movie file
What are the specs of the original file please.

  • When capturing mini dv footage into fcp,  the media comes in sped up.

DVCam decks should automatically lock onto the control track and playback OK, it's normally not the case the other way around with regular DV decks that don't pick up on the fact it's DVCam material and play back slowly and with picture and sound breakup.

  • [FCP S2] How to make each scene a clip when capturing video?

    Hi,
I'm totally new to Final Cut Pro and have recently purchased my Mac Pro and FCP Studio 2. I come from background of Pinnacle Studio on PC and so this seems like a huge leap.
Any way, With Pinnacle Studio, when capturing video it automatically made each scene (point between Start rec and Stop rec on Video Camera) into a clip. I could then drag&drop the clips I wanted into my project timeline. I can tnen eaily add transitions inbetween these clips in my time line.
Now with FCP S2, it seems to capture the video as one long clip and apparently, as I've been told, the only way to separate each scene is to manually cut at the point of a scene cut. Now I can't believe that $1200 software would make you do that and $99 software does this automatically. So I have come here in the hope to find an expert who can explain to me, in very simple terms and steps, how I can achieve this in FCP S2.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Here is a bit of the FCP manual that relates to capturing a single tape and capturing individual clips for each break in TC:
How to Avoid Capturing Clips with Timecode Breaks
The “On timecode break” pop-up menu in the General tab of the User Preferences
window gives you several ways to avoid capturing clips with timecode breaks. It’s
important to set this option to suit the way you intend to capture your clips. You have
    several options:
Â Make New Clip: This is the default option. Video that’s already been captured before
the break in timecode is saved as a single media file, with its Out point set to the
frame occurring immediately before the timecode break. Final Cut Pro then
automatically continues capturing video after the dropped timecode frame as a
second media file. When this option is selected, clips captured after timecode breaks
are named with the original name and the number of the clip. For example, if the
first captured clip’s name is “Cats Playing,” the second clip’s name is set to “Cats
    Playing-1.”
This is a good option to choose if you are capturing an entire tape. For example,
suppose you are capturing the entire contents of a 60-minute tape that has four
timecode breaks. Instead of restarting the capture every time a timecode break is
detected, Final Cut Pro captures all media from the tape as five clips, skipping over each
timecode break and ensuring that the timecode of all captured media is frame-accurate.
    There you have it.

  • SYNC  Loss when converting FCP 6.1 Video thru compressor for DVDSP 4

This is an intermittent problem; video is perfect when viewing in FCP or on tape; but there is an intermittent loss when the MPEG-2 ecode is done... any suggestions to correct?
    KGD

So we take it that it's a bug which strenghens the
usual warning: never update your software in the
middle of a big project. Acually the more I look at
FCP 6, the more I wonder if it's worth upgrading...
I have another six months to go on this project, and I love smoothcam, but still....
I'm going to try 6.0.1. If I don't get any satisfaction with that, I am going to go back to 5.1.4, which was working fine. Actually, FCP 6 solved what for me was a huge problem with version 5.1, which involved management of media and clips. Previous to version 6, if I moved a sequence from one nested bin to another one nested in a different bin, FCP silently and without any warning broke ALL links to the master clips in that sequence. FCP 6 has fixed this problem. But created others.....
I will report back to this thread after I try 6.0.1.
