Sync email via iCloud vs. IMAP account

I have access to my iCloud email account set up via IMAP on all my Macs, and I also have accounts on my iDevices. IMAP keeps my email in sync by storing messages on the server, so what's the added advantage of checking "Mail & Notes" on my Macs? Does that just add notes to the synching process, or is there something else?

@PDADoc: I just tried activating Mail & Notes on one of my Macs on which I hadn't manually set up an account to access my iCloud (formerly MobileMe) email. Doing so immediately created an iCloud account in Mail.app. In the past, I had always set up my Mac-based MobileMe accounts manually, since I wanted to use a different replyto address than ****@me.com or ****@mac.com. With MobileMe, that wasn't possible, but I just discovered that you can specify another replyto address for an iCloud account in Mail.app. I just tried sending email from that account, and the alternative address worked as expected.
So maybe that's the reason for the Mail & Notes checkbox in iCloud. Unlike iOS, where iCloud is one of the explicit choices when you add a new email account, there's no such option on the Mac.
I'll be interested to see if this works for you.

I cant send email via icloud account.  I have a BT router for vision

Thanks for the suggestion - it turned out that it was actually my workplace's network that automatically blocks external SMTP servers (for some security reason), so the email(s) sent perfectly once I went home and connected to May home network. Annoying!

  • Setup procedure for email via iCloud simultaniously on MacBook Pro-Retina, iPad2 and iPhone3GS

I am looking for a "clean" and official procedure to setup email incoming/outgoing/sync service via iCloud simultaneously on three different devices:
    MacBook Pro-Retina ( Mac OS 10.7.x Lion)
iPad2 (with data plan via Verizon3G)
iPhone3GS (with data plan via AT&T)
Primary email account is [email protected], and iCloud is the only profile setup on all three devices at the moment.
Secondary email account is [email protected] but it is automatically forwarded to the primary one, as well.
However, in such simplified basic setup scenario, still multiple copies of the same email messages are received on MacBook, iPhone or iPad devices / mailboxes.
All of your suggestions, ideas and experience would be highly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Here is the official documentation how to set up an iCloud account on your iOS devices, Mac, and PC: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
To set up your iCloud account follow these steps:
    - On your iPhone/iPad (iOS 5): Open "Settings > iCloud"
    - On your Mac (Lion/Mountain Lion): "Open "System Preferences > iCloud" (If you do not have an iCloud icon in System Preferences: "System Preferences > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > iCloud")

  • Can I sync my regular email via icloud

Currently I have two email accounts that sync on my iPhone with my home based computer.  My @mac.com email address, and my "regular" email address associated with my business.  That is the one I use most.
Will this "regular" email also continue to sync via iCloud, or does this only work with my @mac.com email account?

iCloud does not have anything to do with any other email account. The facility which MobileMe had for fetching POP mail from other accounts is not available in iCloud. However you can perfectly well set up both accounts in the Mail app and access each directly.

  • Trouble syncing notes via icloud

I recently turned on notes to be synced via icloud.  In doing that, notes asked me to sign up using an icloud email.  That ID differs from the ID that I used for all my other icloud activity so it won't sync.  How do I correct?

Are you sure it asked you to create a new iCloud ID rather than to create an iCloud email account?  (You have to have an iCloud email account in order to sync notes.)

  • Who can give the right information to receive my email via iCloud on a iMac with Snow Leopard? It can't be upgraded to Lion.

I still have problems since migrating to iCloud with receiving email through my Mail app on my iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (and it can't be upgraded to Lion). Like I found on different places on internet, in Mail Preferences I made a new account, once with imap.mail.me.com and once with p02-imap.mail.me.com, like differently advised. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, untill I fill in again and again the advised changes in the Preferences.
Is there a good advise arround to have my settings once and for all running well, as I expect from Apple stuff? Is Apple listening to the many complaints on this iCloud matter, or is my Apple Micro becoming too Soft to be heard?
Thank you beforehand for helping me (and many others). Best regards,
    Jerome from Belgium

    Dear Roger and all interested,
Right you are with stating you can't have MobileMe and iCloud at the same time. To explain the history of my problem:
I have a small network of 3 computers: 1) MacBook Air 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - 2) iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 - 3) iMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo
For the first time hesitating to upgrade as soon as a new system is available, a friend nevertheless could convince me of the usefullness of Lion and iCloud. During upgrading process I found out that my - 3) iMac just was narrowly to "old" for Lion.
And indeed the migration from MobileMe to iCloud went almost automatically. But quite soon I established that my "old" iMac was no more receiving @mac.com mail. Having a look to the preferences of Mail, I couldn't change anything as I had no more MobileMe access, being migrated to iCloud. Apple information told me to select "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" in the System Preferences, but Snow Leopard has no such thing.
Search on internet told me more or less how to set up an IMAP account in Snow Leopard in Mail preferences with as server address "imap.mail.me.com" with SSL on and use of port 993. This shortly worked. After restart no more. Setting up the account again and again, sometimes working, sometimes not. This is not exactly an almost automatically migration. Some other information told me to use "p02-imap.mail.me.com".
Current situation: after start up, a window from Mail asks me to give my password for the account on the MobileMe IMAP-server "mail.me.com" (which I expected to be "p02-imap.mail.me.com"). Password not accepted, retry and retry, then just click on Cancel. Result: iCloud account has a kind of lightning symbol next to it (= not working). I click on the symbol, one time it disappears and the account works, one time it asks for the password again, and again not accepted. Repeating this procedure untill it works. So for 3 days I realized to make it finally working up to now, but all this does not look to be the right way and doesn't sound a too reassuring situation to me.
When I look at Mail preferences in Snow Leopard now:
    Account Type: MobileMe IMAP
Incoming Mail Server: mail.me.com (expected here p02-imap.mail.me.com)
    Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): p02-imap.mail.me.com
    (Advanced) Authentication: Apple Token
What I find in preferences (automatically established) on my Lion computers:
    Account Type: iCloud IMAP
Incoming Mail Server: p99-imap.mail.me.com (shows grey)
    Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.me.com
(Advanced) Authentication: Password (no Apple Token option)
So I tried to make Snow Leopard Mail similar based on the Lion preferences:
Account Type: MobileMe IMAP (found no way to change to iCloud IMAP)
Incoming Mail Server: mail.me.com (shows grey, found no way to change to "p99-imap.mail.me.com")
    Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.me.com
(Advanced) Authentication: Password (no Apple Token option)
Same result as before: asks for password, which I have to cancel, then click away the lightning symbol, after which it works (but perhaps not tomorrow).
    Best regards,
    Jerome from Belgium

  • HT4864 Problems sending email via icloud

I am having problems sending email via my iCloud through Mail or Sparrow, I have checked the mail server settings and they are correct based on what is described on the Apple site.  Anyone else having this problem?

For some reason, iCloud smtp servers haven't been working well over the last couple weeks. I have experienced this twice, in as many weeks. Very frustrating as I send numerous emails on a daily basis via my iCloud account. If I login through the browser, the sending works fine, but via Mac Mail...no go. Very irritating to say the least. Apple, please fix this fluctuation problem.

  • Cant sync notes to iCloud using gmail account

My notes aren´t syncing with my Ipad, so I went to Settings, iCloud and the Notes button is Off. I tried to put On but when I pull the button it appears the following message: "Create a free @icloud.com email address to turn on Notes", but I´m already syncing with my gmail account... What can i do?

An iCloud email account is required to sync notes with iCloud.  You don't have to use the email account but it must be present on your phone.  Just create the account, then go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Mail section) and make sure this is set to your Gmail account.  Then just ignore the iCloud email account.

  • Can't sync music via iCloud

On the setting under 'store' on my iPhone 4, there is no option to activate Music to automatically sync via iCloud to my other devices (iPad, Mac and MacBook Pro). It is possible to activate 'Apps' and 'Books', but not Music and I do not know why.
    Can somebody help?

  • IPad 4 w iBooks syncs Books via iCloud but not pdf's on my iMac iBooks

Why dont the Pdf's come over from iBooks on the iMac to the iPad4?

They won't go via iCloud, only ibooks that you buy/download from iTunes will potentially show (whilst they remain in the store) in the iBooks app on your iPad for redownloading - if you want the PDFs in the iBooks app on your iPad then you will need to connect the iPad to your Mac and select it in iTunes, and use its Books tab to select and sync them to it.

  • Syncing email via USB

Is there any way to sync email between Outlook and the iPhone via the USB connection - from what I've read on this forum is seems like it can't be done.
What is the reason for not allowing email to be sync'd via USB?

Firstly you should not have installed iSync 1.5 under Mac OS X 10.4.11.
iSync 2.4 is the version of iSync for Mac OS X 10.4.11 and is already installed. By installing an older version you may have broken syncing completely because doing so will have overwritten important system components with much older versions.
Hopefully, you made a full system backup before installing iSync 1.5 so that you can easily revert to it.
The reason why no existing iSync Plugins (which can only be used with iSync 2.4 and later) don't support USB syncing is because the phone itself doesn't support USB syncing on a Mac. You can only sync older Sony Ericsson phones via Bluetooth.
Even if the phone was USB compatible, if you can't navigate the menus then you couldn't have put the phone in the correct USB mode. Plus, you couldn't have transferred the contacts anyway, as contacts are not visible via USB on any Sony Ericsson phones.
So, unfortunately if you can't use the phone, there is no way to get your contacts off it, unless you happened to copy your contacts onto the SIM and can put the SIM in another fully working phone.

  • Syncing bookmarks via iCloud

The sync of my Safari bookmarks via iCloud just doesn't work properly. I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro and I sync the bookmarks between the two devices. Sometimes, it works almost instinstantaneously, but now it has stopped working alltogether. What I can do to make iCloud sync my bookmarks again?

Your answer isnt't helpful, it took my 45 minutes to sync my bookmarks on both macs. The iPhone syncs so slow, that it causes even more problems. And it drains the battery. So I removed the bookmark-sync from my iPhone.
I used MobileMe before and it worked without problems. There was a sync-button and I could determine, in which direction the sync should go. I miss all this helpful funtions with iCloud.
The positions of the bookmarks in the folders are not synced. The service is not reliable, I expect from Apple to improve this as soon as possible. iCloud is not an improvement in comparison to MobileMe, the opposite is true.
Do you know alternative services, that are more reliable than iCloud?
