Bookmarks vanished on multiple computers.
Error message on all platforms: Sync encountered an error while syncing: Unknown error.
Android device seems unaffected. Attempts to re-sync good data from android device have no effect.
I filed a bug report but after over 15 days it was marked as a duplicate and rolled into another bug report.
The solutions there are way (WAY) beyond my technical level of expertise, and look to be for the unix OS.
Something about a corrupt root.
I've been very reluctant to clear my sync data, because the impression I get is that I'll lose all my bookmarks. The entire reason I started using Sync was to back them up!

If you've lost bookmarks then you should make a backup copy of the JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

I'm using Firefox 4.0.1 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
I set up a sync account to transfer my history, etc. from my old desktop to my new laptop (details above). Since then, i haven't used my desktop, just the laptop.
For about the last week or so, the following error message keeps popping up at the foot of the screen:
"Sync encountered an error while synchronising: Unknown error. Sync will automatically retry this action." And there is a 'Sync now' button.
I can't think of anything that I've done (installing extensions, etc.) to cause this to happen.
Any ideas, anyone? All help appreciated.

Go to [https://account.services.mozilla.com/ your sync account], log in, and click clear your sync data.
Then click the Sync now button on the error message.
The error went away for me.

Why do I need to set up sync when I only use 1 computer. A warning showed up that says: Sync encountered an error while connecting: Unknown error. Please try again.

For months, now, I continually get the message "Synch encountered an error while synching: Unknown error. Synch will automatically retry this action." This happens on both my desktop and laptop machines.

My problem is, sync encountered an error while connecting: unknown error please retry preferences. I tried to resync, but my email address was already synced. Help!

The above just started happening yesterday, I click it off and it pops back up again. Today, I tried to set-up sync and it showed my email already existed.
I have problem number 2, which has been going on for sometime now, "we noticed you may have signed in or signed out in another window. Click o.k. to reload your page. Today, I went to file and clicked exit and restart Firefox and the same thing happened. Please help me!

I had the same error,
I accidentally saved the password server XXXX.services.mozilla.com
Once the password unregistered, synchronization started to operate.
for more logs, we can look at the variables in about: config and doing a search services.sync
services.sync.lastSync may be useful to track the status of the synchronization

How to fix "Sync encountered an error while syncing:Unknown error."

In mid July, after the firefox update, I had decided to close firefox like I usually do before I open the client for my MMORPG Aion, so I did. I end up not turning on firefox for a few days and when I did my bookmarks were gone as well as my toolbar bookmarks and my history. I start to wonder what happened and then I realised that there was a grey bar at the bottom of my browser stating, "Sync encountered an error while syncing: Unknown error. Sync will automatically retry this action.." I had no idea why this would happen as I never had this problem before so I look at the firefox support database but since I'm quite the greenhorn when it comes to programming there was only so much I could understand. I did try looking for corrupt or locked profiles but I saw none. Now as of today it's going on 2 months since the problem began and just today I recieved the firefox 32.0 update but still have this problem so I'm at my wits end and I not sure if I'll ever get it working again. Also my sync account is the one under the new system I had updated a few days before the problem began it also seems to be working on my other devices. Im lost without my bookmarks please help.

Hello Firefox support. I just started working on a 64 bit Windows 7 machine running Firefox 5 and am constantly getting the following Sync error: "Sync encountered an error while syncing: Unknown error. For 2 days now, I have received a message at the bottom of my browser stating "Sync encountered an error while syncing: Unknown error. Sync will automatically retry this action." I have tried to change my sync settings but that has not worked. I would appreciate assistance with this issue. Thank you.

The syncing doesn't work anymore. This message is displayed at the bottom all the time:
"Sync encountered an error while syncing: Unknown error. Sync will automatically retry this action."
Retrying doesn't help.

I had some luck doing the following - Go to https://account.services.mozilla.com/ and login using your sync info. Find the link to Clear Cache data and clear your sync cache (first time failed, then worked). Then do a manual sync to get back in sync. Seems to have cleared up my issue for the time being.

I am trying to connect to the site - https://login.salesforce.com/?ec=302&startURL=%2F5003000000EIhFk and i just cannot login. the site is accessible, but could not log in and I have this error in the status area on the bottom - Firefox Sync encountered an error while syncing: Unknown error

I think I managed to fix this.
Go to [https://account.services.mozilla.com/ your sync account], log in, and click clear your sync data.
Then click the Sync now button on the error message.
The error went away for me.

"Sync encountered''' an error while syncing: Unknown error. Sync will automatically retry this action" - this error message keeps popping up whenever I am on my email accounts. I hit the "Sync Now" icon, but it comes back after a while.

Note: I just tried deleting and re-creating my Sync account, reinstalling firefox, and deleting places.sqlite, with no success. And "Eooro" from the title is supposed to be "Error".
