Sync erases podcasts on ipad

I was on a long trip and dutifully downloaded a weekly podcast to my iPad.  Now, I come home and hookup the iPad to my Mac and my downloads are gone and apparently irretrievable.   What do I do to keep the Mac from wiping out what I have put on my iPad during a sync?   Over the past year, I have lost all sorts of documents and podcasts and have gotten to the point where I never want to sync again.
If Apple assumes what is on my Mac should always overwrite what is newer on my iPad, then they do not understand the concept of syncing.
I am just bleeping furious.

"Each time you sync,  content is synced between your iOS device and computer to reflect new,  updated, or deleted content."
Not true.
I dont nesessarily like it or understand why it can't be differrent, but I accepted it a long time ago and thus don't have any problems in regards to its apparent design flaws.
I download everything i want directly to my ipad and avoid using itunes until absolutey necessary. (ie; podcast app)
Sorry to say that is a pretty sad state of affair for the Apple software.   I would like to use the iMac to back things up, update my podcasts and reflect any changes I have made to my contacts and calendar.  I do not use Apple's cloud because I am on OS 10.6 (so I can still use a few PowerMac programs I have).

I read through all of these (BTW, I had read most of them before).  As mentioned above, the Cloud is not applicable for me.
None warn me of losing my data.  Nor how to prevent it.
The last link is mildly helpful.  However, I would like to auto sync my music (which comes entirely from my Mac), calendar and contacts to keep them up to date.  But if I do that, and deselect books and documents, it erases those.   No help.
BTW, you paid for a premium device, why wouldn't you then pay for premium support?
Google can often be very helpful (usually not snarky)
I have never had to pay for premium support.  If I have to, I have selected the wrong product.  If I can work in Terminal, set up the inner workings of a LAN, act as tech suport for free for non-profits, create websites using Dreamweaver, I should be able to figure out how to sync my iPad with my Mac and not lose data.
I have searched Google.  Some of the equally frustrated quotes that I posted came from Google.
Thanks for trying to help.  Sorry to say that your conclusion was to not use iTunes and do not sync.

  • ITunes won't sync HD Podcasts to iPad

My iTunes (every version since the iPad 3G came out) will not transfer HD podcasts to my iPad. It reports that "Some of the videos in your iTunes Library, including.... were not copied to the iPad... because they cannot be playe" (yes, it drops the "d" at the end of that)... HD movies play fine. And, if i directly download the HD podcasts to the iPad, they WILL play just fine. Why won't iTunes transfer them if it CAN play them (theoretically and by direct download to the iPad) I'd rather control it all through iTunes than have to individually download HD podcasts to the iPad. Is this a bug?

    Here's the reason why...
iTunes on the desktop is very strict about the video you can sync to the iPad. If the video falls outside the guidelines (*see below) for videos on the ipad, iTunes won't transfer the video.
I just downloaded a full HD podcast video from iTunes to my iPad and desktop computer. Both of these videos play just fine. When I synced the iPad to my desktop computer iTunes would not transfer the video to the iPad. The video is 1920x1080, this outside the guideline for iTunes to transfer the video to the iPad.
The iPad is capable of playing a 1080p videos. When i need to send a 1080p to my ipad I use the GoodReader app to do so. It is iTunes (on the desktop) that is placing these restrictions on the videos that can be transfer to the iPad.
If you want to you can voice your opinion  to Apple:

Upgrade to Snow Leopard - it's compatible with the latest version of iTunes, and still supports PowerPC applications.
    $19.99 - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Snow Leopard is required if you wanted to upgrade to Lion, anyway, which you may want to in the future if the latest version of iTunes no longer supports Snow Leopard.

  • New iPad will not sync music, podcasts, or photos

So I sync'd my new iPad yesterday and cannot figure out why my music, videos, movies, photos, and podcasts do not sync. All of my apps carried over, but that's it. I might have 2 seperate email accounts associated with my iPhone and my iPad, but I don't know how to get them on the same account. Any help?

    Hi and welcome........
I might have 2 seperate email accounts associated with my iPhone and my iPad, but I don't know how to get them on the same account.
Merging two different e-mail accounts isn't possible but you can use multiple mail accounts on your iPad. Tap Settings / Mail, Contacts, Calendars / Add Account. Do that for each mail account you want.
cannot figure out why my music, videos, movies, photos, and podcasts do not sync.
Make sure iTunes recognizes your iPad.

  • ITunes Match Sync Erases ID3 Tags

I have had no problems with the iTunes Match syncing between the iTunes that was on my PC (version, I don't know, but it was older than 11.4) and my iPhone and iPad.
But today I upgraded iTunes to the latest and greatest version (11.4), and now everything is MESSED UP. When I connect this new iTunes to my iTunes Match account, now all of a sudden all of the playlists on both my iPhone and iPad got messed up and came out of the Playlist Folders they were in and are now top-tier playlists. When I try to move them back into their appropriate folders in iTunes and re-sync, the re-sync effectively erases from iTunes the changes I just made. For example, it puts the playlist right back to where I moved it FROM. If I try to create new playlists, the sync erases them from iTunes. Even if I try to update an individual song's ID3 tag (like, for example, if I add some text to the "Grouping" field of a single song) and re-sync, the updated text disappears and reverts back to what it was before I synced. I don't even have my iPhone or iPad connected by cable to the computer, so it's not like iTunes is getting confused between whether to sync via cord or via iTunes Match.
I don't know what to do. Is my iTunes update corrupted? It seems to be functioning fine otherwise. No alerts. No bad DLLs. Nothing weird other than the iTunes Match syncing problem.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Sean

You should check with the head unit manufacturer; they can most likely answer your question.

  • How do I delete synced photos from my IPad 2? My computer is no longer holding a charge and I would like to delete photos I synced without my computer

I hope that it is not true that I cannot delete photos thaI synced to my iPad. I cannot use my computer because it is not charging. How do I remove synced photos from my iPad without the use of my ITunes?

This is a problem. Normally you do need to connect to the computer you've synced ith previously to delete albums that were copied from that computer.
In the case where the old computer fails, crashes or is sold or discarded, you need to get all of your stuff off the iPad and onto a new computer. Visit Apple support to learn how to do this. Once you establish a new tunes library on a different computer you can sync and delete the photo albums you no longer want.
Another option is to restore your iPad to its original state. That will delete everything including photos, non default apps, music, videos, etc.
Once reset and erased you can download all purchased apps again.

  • Recently I am getting a message when I try to sync photos to my iPad from my PC in iTunes suggesting that photos already on the iPad will be removed if I sync.  I don't want to remove existing photos.  Any ideas?I

I am trying to copy photos from a recent vacation to my iPad2.  The process was straightforward using iTunes until recently. Now I am getting a message warning me that if I sync photos from the folder on my PC to iTunes and my iPad, photos already on the iPad (except ones taken by the iPad) will be removed.  I am running iOS 8.0.2 and the most recent iTunes update. I do not want to remove all the other photos from my iPad, so I cancel the sync.  I have tried copying the photos using the Apple SD card connector, but it does not recognize my SD card (it does recognize an SDHC card, but I am unable to copy the photos to that card).  Is anyone else gettinga message like what I describe above when trying to sync photos to an iPad2 in iTunes?

It is really a very simple fix. Place ALL of the photos that you want to sync to the iPad into one photos folder and sync that folder to the iPad. In your case, place the next set of photos that you want to sync, into the folder with the first set of photos that you already synced to the iPad. You can only sync from one main photos folder and if you choose another folder that does not include the photos that you previously synced, those photos will be erased from the iPad - as you have now discovered.
You can sync one level of sub folders with the main photos folder. You can have as many sub folders as you want (as long as you have the storage space available on the iPad) but you can only sync from one main photos folder. After you place all of the photos into the one main folder, when you go to the Sync Photos From drop down menu in iTunes, select that main photos folder and all of the sub folders that you placed in there will appear and you can select each sub folder to sync as well.

How to sync between iPhone and iPad at Podcasts app?

    Just guessing here...
Any sharing is probably a result of being logged in with the same Apple ID on both devices.
For apps/music: Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Automatic Downloads OFF.
For iCloud: Settings > iCloud > Delete Account.
For iMessage: Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.

  • çnow won't sync back to my iPad because it says I don't have permission on this computer. I don't want to download it from iTunes again because it took up a lot of bandwidth. What's the deal

I bourght "E O Wilson's Life on Earth" and backed it up to my iMac. Now it won't sync back to my iPad because it says I don't have permission on this computer. I don't want to download it from iTunes again because it took up a lot of bandwidth. What's the deal?
I also made the big mistake of downloading a free book about the making of the movie "Frankenweenie." Mega-memory eater. Now it wants to download additions and started to do so---now says paused. I can't delete the bloody thing. Seems like nothing I've downloaded, including free books, can be deleted. How can I get rid of this garbage?
Is there any way to just transfer my music from my iMac to my iPad and not affect anything else on my iPad? The whole iBooks thing is just a mess as far as I'm concerned. Is there any way to just drag and drop?

"I have logged in to my itunes account on a different computer and none of my purchased music is showing up."
Correct.  it does not magially appear in other places.  It will only be where you put it.
"I also have plugged my iphone in to get updates but it says I will lose all media and apps if I don't update on the computer where  I sync everything. "
Correct as well.  Iphone will sync with one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content.
You need to copy everything ( itunes library/contacts/pics/calendars/files/docs) from the old computer, or your backup copy of the old one, to the new one.

  • Syncing more than 1 iPad to an iTunes account

    Hi,
I want to buy 10 iPads for our business and use them as a sales tool, is it possible to have 1 itunes account with all our company assets pictures, videos, etc and then sync each of the 10 iPads to the same iTunes account ?
    Thanks
    Paul

Since you can transfer iTunes content and photos from a single computer only, which Mac do you plan on doing this with?
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod, iPhone, or iPad, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
Assuming you have a single iTunes account and the Mac Mini is authorized with the same iTunes account with iTunes as your iMac, with your iPad connected to iTunes on the Mac Mini and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPad.
The sync process for photos is a one way transfer process only - from the computer to the iPad. Photos transferred from your computer are optimized for viewing on the iPad - the original resolution of these photos is reduced as part of the iTunes transfer process. If you transfer photos from your Mac Mini, all photos transferred from your iMac will be erased from your iPad first.

    I'm sorry about your loss.
Are you trying to recover data from this iPad, or to set it up as new (erase everything on it, and simply use the iPad as if it were brand new as your new iPad)?
If the latter, you can place the iPad into recovery mode as shown here.  You may have to try this several times:

  • ITunes: How can I sync my podcasts between Macs and iDevices?

    Hi,
Using iTunes for a decade now, I still having the same problem that I don't know how to solve:
How can I sync my podcasts subscriptions and play states between Macs and iDevices?
I am having two MPBs and one iMac, as well as an iPhone and iPad (yes, making someone rich in California), all of them are linked to the same iTunes/Apple account, they are not in the same Wifi.
What I would like to have that all these iTunes (plural) have the same Podcasts with the same played/unplayed states...
Is there any way to do that now, possible with iCloud? I am completely confused now that they have introduced podcast.app for iDevices...
Thank you for any idea for good solution!

From what I can tell, the Podcast app should do for your iOS devices what you're describing--as long as they all use the same Apple ID. Here's an article with some helpful information about the app:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5295
To keep your subscriptions in sync across all devices, the article says this:
"To subscribe to a podcast on your device, tap the Subscribe button from the podcast provider's page from the Podcast catalog. Enable subscription syncing to keep your subscription up-to-date across your iOS devices. On your iOS device tap Settings > Podcasts > Sync Subscriptions > ON.
To sync playback position, the article says this:
"Playback Sync automatically allows you to sync your playback position to all of your iOS devices with the Podcasts app installed, using your Apple ID. In order for Playback Sync to sync your playback position, you must be signed in to the iTunes Store using the same Apple ID on your iOS devices."
As for keeping playback position on your iOS devices in sync with iTunes on your Macs, you'll need iTunes 11 on all your Macs. So if you're still using iTunes 10 or earlier, you'll need to run a software update to get the latest version. Incidentally, I came across this discussion, which offers some helpful setup/troubleshooting tips about using this new podcast playback syncing feature:

    Hope this is helpful!

  • ICloud sync for Podcasts?

I just jumped in and started playing around with Podcasts.  I see that there is supposed to be iCloud sync.  I don't get how to get it to work though.  I have a bunch of subscribed to podcasts on my iPhone.  I have iCloud sync turned on in the Podcasts preferences.  I thought I would go home and my podcasts would sync to my iTunes on my home computer but nothing happens.  What am I missing?  I have iCloud setup on my Mac at home.  Is there some other option that I have to enable to start the syncing to my iTunes?
    Thanks,
    jake

I was pulling my hair out with this app for a while.  I did some playing around with it last night and confirmed that since upgrading to iTunes 11 (I actually didn't want to but it did so automatically when I upgraded to Mt. Lion), and using the last version of Podcasts (I didn't update yet), it is syncing playback position with my macbook.
Up until last night I had each podcast set on my iOS devices (iPad 3 and iPhone 5) NOT to automatically download.  Then I would listen and then still sync to iTunes.  It would update them via syncing, yet the app would show new episodes before I had downloaded them, I was just doing it this way.
However, last night I tried unchecking the "automatically sync . . . " and then only selected some old podcasts that I like to have on my device, so in other words it will not update my current subscriptions via the cable (I still sync for musice that I rip from CD's and photos basically, and to backup).  Then I turned on automatic downloads for each current podcast I subscribe to on the two iOS devices.  So we'll see how it works using the automatic downloads.
One thing is clear, if you have iOS devices set to sync subscriptions via iCloud and still sync those same podcasts with iTunes on a mac, you will have a lot of screwups.  Mainly you will listen to something, it will show as unplayed, then you sync with your mac, and it will re-sync that same episode which your mac thinks you didn't listen to, and then screw up your play status.
I did verify that the playback position does sync with itunes over iCloud, HOWEVER - if you look at each episode it doesn't look like it, because it still shows as unplayed with the full circle filled on.  Yet if you click on an episode that you've already started listening to on an iOS device, it will pick up where you were, but it's decieving.
Sorry for my confusing post, but this topic is confusing, and they haven't made it any better.  I'm about one more screw up from downloading Downcast.  What I'm trying now is to just stop syncing those podcasts between the mac and iOS devices, so I basically turned that off, however, I didn't completely uncheck to sycning "Podcasts" in iTunes because I thought I might lose some episodes.  Eventually I'm going to turn it off becasue in reality I rarely ever listen on my mac.

  • I cant sync songs to my iPad Mini

So today I was trying to sync songs to my iPad Mini and it wont sync as you can see in the above image. It shows that cross sign. Now that file is completely compatible with the iPad beacuse I had synced that song before and it got removed accidently. No songs cant be synced! The songs that are already there are which I purchased using my apple id. There was no problem until I deleted the songs through the iPad (by sliding to the right and deleting) or maybe after I clicked the "Sync music library of itunes" Afterwards I disabled that option but still I cant copy songs. I am using an external software called SynciOS to copy songs now. But it cant edit the tags of the songs. When I check itunes for editing the song tags (the songs are not copyrighted), it dosent allow me. When I click the tabs like Summary it doesnt allow me to type anything in it. I have tried reset to factory settings but it dosent help. SOME BODY PLZ HELP

Check your Restrictions. Do you have Explicit turned off?
Settings>General>Restrictions>under Allowed Content>Music & Podcasts....do you see the word "Explicit" next to them? If not, then click on that and turn Explicit ON. Or, turn off Restrictions altogether.
