Sync in fstab?

does anyone use/recommend using sync option for harddrives in fstab? it sounds like a sensible thing to use but i dont know why most or all distros not use it by default. is it too slow?
(does not windows do asyncronous file operations too?)

No problem Try it if you want, it will not break anything. It may be safer, but less quick - though on BSD it's quick. Never used it and never loosed data, so I don't think it's mandatory...
You can try dirsync if you want metadatas (ie directories, symlinks, nodes) to be written synchronously but datas (files) asynchronously, too. Maybe a good compromise between speed and reliability
From the manpage this option seems to work only on ext2/3 and ufs, so if you have another filesystem it may be ignored.

  • Mount ro vs. rw,sync

I'm building a linux system that will be powered off simply by switching off the power, so the / partition is mounted read only. Problem is that it needs to copy or delete some files occasionally.
For this purpose I have another ext2 partition which is mounted with options rw,sync in fstab. The power would never be switched off during file creation, copy, ..., but only after such tasks are finished. Could I just switch off the power or would the filesystem get corrupted?
I could also mount ro, then before copying remount to rw and back to ro. It is a bit awkward, though. And I'd need root privileges for that.

I'm not sure about this unionfs. It means additional space and a kernel module.
I am not building a live distro. The data I need to write is small. And it needs to be written on very rare occasions. But it needs to stay on disk after shutdown.
Basically what I wanted to ask is: will an unclean poweroff cause any corruption on ext2 (non journalizing filesystem), mounted with "rw,sync"? I can safely assume none of write processes will still be in progress when the power is switched off. The media is compact flash, so there is no need to fear of any disk cache?

  • Best solution for usb storage mounting ?

    Hey there
i installed arch on my wifes computer, keeping it xfce4 for right now to  conserve resources. my daughter has a usb camera that i can mount via fstab (sometimes) and mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 yadda yadda.
is there a way i can simplify this so that it automounts ala ubuntu style ?
i have looked at susbmount and automount . what would be the best way to go here?

nephish wrote:cool, does sda1 stay at a permission that will allow users to mount / unmount ?
With ivman? Yes, I believe so, although I would try to stay away from it. In the past I've experienced corruption problems. I'm sure its fixed now but personally, I feel safer not using it all.
I run dbus and hal (added in that order to daemons() array in rc.conf) to dynamically sync the fstab with the proper entries once something is plugged in and xfce4-mount-plugin to manually mount the device. It sits in the task bar and you can mount/umount each device by clicking on it and then clicking on the corresponding device icon. Its in aur.

  • How do I add photos to the camera roll that were not taken on my iPad? I imported photos to my iPad from my camera, and now I want to add them to my camera roll which is sync'ed with Dropbox as a back up mechanism.

How do I add photos to my camera roll that were not taken one my iPad? I have iMported photos from my camera to my iPad. Theses photos are in the imported photo album. I want to move these photos to my camera roll but can't figure out how to this. I want them in my camera roll because that is the album that syncs with Dropbox where I want to backup my photos. Thank you for your help.

Consider using sshfs to mount your Pi from your Linux boxes.  It's much easier to configure and manage than samba.  It sounds like you already have your Windows machines mounting your Pi so Samba is doing its job in that respect.
More info on sshfs in the Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sshfs
To help get you off the dime, here's a modified line from my fstab that I use to mount my Pi with:
    gav@PI:/mnt/backup /mnt/rpi/backup fuse.sshfs rw,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,allow_other 0 0
Subsitute my mount points with yours.
    For a password-less mount:
         ssh-copy-id gav@PI
after you've set up ssh and generated some keys on your client box.
Here are some relevant lines from the smb.conf file on my Pi that I use for my one Windows box in the house that might help you with your write permissions:
       security = user
      hosts allow = 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
      guest account = gav
    ; And my share setup:
    [rpi]
       comment = Public Stuff
       path = /mnt
       writable = yes
    ;   printable = no
    ;   write list = @krb
    [torrent_dl]
       path = /mnt/video/torrent_dl
       writable = yes
       create mask = 0770
       directory mask = 0770
       guest ok = Yes
       case sensitive = No
       read only = No
    Hope this helps.

  • Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

OK, a new issue that I can't resolve...
Having made my new kernel without any hiccups, I then installed it by using pacman -A kernel2.6.12.pkg.tar.gz. However, on boot-up it only gets so far, then gives me an error:
<0>Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
I've looked around on the 'net, and it seems this usually occurs when there's some problem with the hardware. However, I've used the config file from the 2.6.10 kernel I'm currently in as I type, so there shouldn't be any problems support-wise :?
    What could be wrong?
My fstab and config for the 2.6.12 kernel are below (I've included the fstab so you can see I've got support for my filesystems compiled into the kernel):

Arch is running on an Athlon-XP 3000+, with an Audigy 2 Value sound card, ASUS NF7 mobo (nforce2), 2 IDE hdds, 1 SATA hdd, a floppy drive, 3com Boomerang ethernet PCI card, and an ATI Radeon 9800SE.
I thought that I might have enabled both APM and APCI in the kernel by accident, but that's not the case
I know, as I've mentioned earlier in the thread, that there's an issue with the emu10k1 drivers used by my audigy in this kernel, but I've compiled that as a module under ALSA, and I assume it wouldn't have an extreme effect like this even if it were statically compiled.
    Any ideas???

Problem was resolved by self; I recompiled the kernel, again using ABS... I think I may have not incorporated an I/O Scheduler into the kernel, lol. Cheers anyway.

  • Best approach to a sanity check based ram-to-disk sync?

    Here's the scenario;
I'm working on an embedded project using ArchLinux at its core. The application I'm running creates a cache of content utilized by the end-user at first runtime, and updates it each subsequent runtime. If the content directory reaches around 4000 items, this causes menu selections to become quite slow, since its reading from a disk-based cache. This will almost certainly be the case in the deployed application, therefore the appropriate action in my mind is to run as much of the application from memory as possible. Given the gratuitous amount of 4gb of ram, I can copy the entire program directory, a large cache, and all interface elements into ram at boot, and run the application from there (tmpfs entry in fstab -> cp -R from static directory on disk -> ram) This leaves only the actual content elements (~40gb) on the disk for runtime access. The problem with this approach is runtime usage statistics and information relevant to the user experience is also written to the program directory (which is now in ram); this is fine, since it lowers the amount of writes to the solid state disk greatly, and I can sync the data back to the disk on a clean shutdown... however, in the event of power loss or unexpected interruption, all data would be lost.
I know how to quickly check if data was changed, since the tmpfs will have timestamps on all the files. However, what is the best way to sync the data back to the disk? Should I just write a bash script to copy data to tmpfs, start the front-end in the background, and re-launch it if terminated, and also check data every 15 minutes, followed by either doing nothing or copying data to the static directory?
The end goal, obviously is to minimize the amount of "Please Wait..." time there is on screen...

    Chris,
I did the reinstall via Recovery, and have to admit it was pretty sweet that everything just came back.
Unfortunately, there have been intermittent probs.
I believe you may be suggesting a reinstall from scratch though, which is my intent at this point. Haven't done it yet. I do maintain a backup, yes.
I thought simply re-copying the iTunes folder might bring any crud along with it, but I don't suppose it would hurt to try. Then I can avoid the stuff I'm hoping to.
    Thanks,
    Markie

  • Sync with USB pendrive in KDE

    Hello,
When i insert an USD memory, KDE correctly detects it and open a konqueror window with the USB content. Perfect. Then, i copy various MB to it. Perfect. Close the window, right-click over the icon and select "Safety extract" (i've translated it, as i've KDE in spanish), and a moreless 0,3 sec. later, the icon disappears.
It seems that all the process was OK but it isn't. When extracting the USB, inserting again all the MB of data that  were copied aren't in the USB.
What really happened was that the sync operation is not made when i copy the files, umouting instead. But, as the icon in the desktop dissapears, it appears that i can safely remove the USB. The copy process is done after that icon have dissapeared, as the lights of the USB keep "flashing". If i remove the USB when that lights stops, and insert again, the files have been copied.
Well, the question is how can i make to avoid that the device icon dissapears unless the copy process finished ok... or isn't this the normal behaviour?
I think that this can be controlled moreless with fstab, but i haven't no entry in fstab related to extraible devices, as with pmount is no necessary, so, any solution?
Searching the forum found similar questions but not exactly this.

A provisional trick that "solves" it.
In KDE, i've set up the option that in the desktop only must appear mounted devices. I changed it, so an ummounted USB is shown in the desktop too.
With this "trick", when i "safely extract", happens this:
    - Select safely extract
    - In 0,3 seconds the "green" avatar (is mounted) dissapears.
    - The USB device keeps on in the desktop, but as if it was umounted
    - No progress bar
    - When all the copy process has finished, the icon disappears

  • Can't Sync Files in Dropbox Subdirectories

I installed both dropbox and dropbox-cli from the AUR, and I noticed that files don't get uploaded or synced when I copy, move, or edit a file into my Dropbox folder. For instance, I run dropboxd, daemon starts up, syncs up with cloud, then it says it's up to date from the icon. But let's say I edit a file with vim. The changes do not sync, and if I restart dropboxd, a conflicted file is generated. If I copy or move a file into the Dropbox folder with cp or mv from the terminal, that file just don't get uploaded, even when I restart dropboxd. So far, I have been able to use the online uploader, but it's very inconvenient, and the online uploader is terrible for folders. My Dropbox folder is located on another drive, so could it be a permissions problem? Here's the relevant line in my fstab:
    /dev/sda3 /media/universal ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
it might not be, however. Any ideas? I could install nautilus and dropbox-nautilus (or some other equivalent), but I'm trying my best to stick to just the terminal for now, so I don't particularly like the idea.
Edit: The problem is actually that files don't sync with copying/moving/editing files in any subdirectories in the Dropbox main directory. Files sync just fine when copying/moving/editing files in the Dropbox main directory. Dropbox's preferences have selective sync on all files and folders (essentially complete sync. Is there a difference?).

Ok, I did update my clock, and I don't think it helped. At least I know how to update my clock now, though.
I experimented a little bit more and found out more specifics on the problem that I have. Let's say I have a test.txt file somewhere. If I copy/move/edit the test.txt file into the Dropbox main directory, the file syncs fine! I almost went on here and said the problem was fixed. However, let's say the Dropbox folder has a subdirectory Test_Dir. Now if I copy/move/edit test.txt into the Test_Dir directory, no file syncing happens at all. Wait around for a while, restart dropboxd, nothing. Doesn't show up on the dropbox website either (while in the previous case it showed up right away). This happens for any subdirectory. So, the problem is more specifically files don't sync when copying/moving files into Dropbox subdirectories. I checked Dropbox's preferences, and I have selective sync on all my folders, so that shouldn't be the problem. Any ideas? (I edited the topic subject to be more specific)

  • Sync folders to network shares?

I set myself up a windows server, running AD, print services, filesharing, network installation stuff, and what not. I got bored really, but I figure I may as well make use of it, since I don't know what else to do with a dual P3 system. actually, to be honest, the whole reason I got the dual P3 was so i could get some hands on experience with server 2008
anyhow, after much trial and error, I managed to get some shares mounted in fstab via cifs, one of which, is a backup folder for myself.
basically, what i want, is to have my home folder on this machine synced to the one on the server. I tried devicesync, which works....which was a bad idea because as it turns out, it wants to replace everything everytime, so its not really a viable option.
so I'm looking for something that can sync my data to the server, pretty much the way that it is, so that i can access it across my network in the same manor of organized chaos that I do locally. I figure a weekly cron job will come into play, but right now I just need something that can do the incremental changes, adding new files and modified files.
I'm hoping that if i can get this setup the way I want, rather than scattering stuff across multiple machines, I may be able to keep stuff on the main linux machine I use, and as long as things stay synched with the network folder on the server, I might just be able to quit scattering stuff across so many machines, and just have everything on the main machine, and then the network backup that i can access from any machine, since I'm running AD, and managed to get some login scripts to map my folders
    any suggestions?

thats a start, I'm sure it should do the job.
but I'm looking at the examples on the site, and it seems they have splitting files by the day of the backup. I'm safe to assume thats not necessary?
just started looking at the wiki page, should have thought to check for that first.
it should do the trick, if i can figure it out, I thought I was a tech guy.....until I went linux....windows I can do in my sleep...but some of the linux stuff, man........at the same time though, rsync looks like a much simpler and straight to the point than anything i've found for my windows clients, i hate the windows backup for splitting files into folders in all sorts of wierd ways, and I really don't consider offline files an option for backup, I don't know why that would ever be suggested, at least for my scenario....
anyhow, Thanks a lot for the speedy reply, I'll post back with results, or if I need another suggestion, but I'm 99% positive rsync is what I'm looking for
just thought i'd note, I'm actually quite impressed by that specific wiki page, props to whoever wrote it, for breaking down the commands and explaining the switches, saves me doing rsync --help to get that info, jsut a nice touch I feel I sometimes don't see often enough

  • [SOLVED] FSTAB and File Permissions

    Hi Guru's
I'm a new Arch user migrating from Ubuntu.
I have one hard drive partitioned as follows:
         SDA1     NTFS
         SDA2     / ext3
         SDA3     / swap
         SDA4     NTFS
I also have a semi permanent USB Hard Drive and various other USB devices which seem to be mounting fine under autofs. When / if, I solve my fstab problem, I will look into Udev to  give these devices static names.
My problem is that no matter what I try, I cannot make the two NTFS drives accessible by a normal user (me).  The following is from my current fstab file:
/dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 ntfs  rw,user,auto,uid=1000,gid=100,sync,umask=000     # my uid and the users group
                   /dev/sda4 /mnt/sda4  ntfs  rw,user,auto,uid=1000,gid=100,sync,umask=000
This is one of dozens of combinations I have tried based on  research and "RTFM".   I just  keep getting more confused.  The directory entries show me as the owner, rw permissions and belonging to the user group, the only problem is that I can not write to those partitions as a normal user.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Any suggestions for links that tie in how fstab, autofs, udev and hal work together.  I have seen links on all of them, but would like to see a brief overview on how they work together.  As you can see, I'm one of those linux noobs.
      Thanks
      Larry

    Hi luca,
Thanks for the link.  I made the following changes:
       /dev/sda1  /mnt/sda1  ntfs-3g  users,noauto,uid=1000,gid=100,fmask=0113,dmask=0002,locale=en_PH.utf8  0 0
       /dev/sda4  /mnt/sda4   ntfs-3g  users,uid=1000,gid=100,fmask=0113,dmask=0002,locale=en_PH.utf8         0 0
Except for the locale, its working great.  I still have to mount sda1 as root, which is probably a good idea for the other OSes partition.  If I change it to auto it does mount automatically but thats flirting with danger
       On to Udev
      Thanks Again
      Larry

  • Fstab and preferred options

At one time when I installed my arch systems it was recommended to use defaults, relatime for the mount options for ext4 partitions in fstab.  However I am trying to look into an issue with mirror database syncing and I looked through the install wiki areas and did not see any mention of using relatime any more.  However I did see in the fstab wiki that noatime was mentioned a number of times.
Can someone clarify what the current recommended mount options are for ext4 filesystems in fstab?  (defaults, relatime or defaults, noatime for example)
    Thanks

It's all quite a mess (man pages, wiki and reality all show different things), but relatime has been the kernel default for a long while; there is no need to specify it manually. My only fstab option is "discard", and mount outputs:
    /dev/sda1 on / type ext4 (rw,relatime,discard,data=ordered)
Also, "defaults" are included by default ( ), so there is no need to specify this option explicitly (i.e. "defaults, noatime" is equivalent to "noatime"). The only situation in which it is needed is when you use no other options — then not writing it would leave a blank space and it would be an error.
So, "recommended options": leave it as it is and only specify what you need.

  • NFS4 fstab mounting

    Hello,
Is there a way to have nfs4 shares mount at boot, but also have a timout? At the moment I have nfs4 shares mounting in fstab and that works fine except if there is a network problem or if the nfs server is down. Is there a setting to have the nfs mount timout if unsuccesful so the client at least gets to a place to make changes if needed? I have tried "retry=1" and "bg" as options. I have also tried putting the mount in rc.local hoping that would allow a faster failure, but it didn't. So far, if the network or the nfs server is down, the client will not boot. Is autofs a solution?
I am mounting the equivalent of "my documents" to home, and pacman "sync" and "pkg" directories.
    192.168.1.202:/pkg /var/cache/pacman/pkg nfs4 async 0 0
    192.168.1.202:/sync /var/lib/pacman/sync nfs4 async 0 0
    192.168.1.202:/bryan /home/bryan/Data nfs4 async 0 0

    Thank you both.
I have removed nfs from the modules. I moved netfs after the nfs services. I can boot now with only a delay.  I guess I should have been referencing the NFS wiki as well as NFS4. I am not familiar enough with each daemon to recognize the order requirement (especially netfs as I can't find much documentation on what all it does)
The delay is three minutes per share. Again I tried retry=1, but it has no effect. I read on another post, that they also did not have success with retry=n. For me I get three minutes instead of the "default" two.

  • Firefox with Profile-sync-daemon creates duplicate cache directory

I've set up the Profile-sync-daemon https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pr … ync-daemon (mainly to ease on my old SSD) and it works fine but Firefox keeps creating entries in
    /home/<username>/.cache/mozilla/firefox/<myprofilename>
    It contains 3 directories
    /safebrowsing
    /startupCache
    /thumbnails
Since I set up psd I've been using
    browser.cache.disk.parent_directory : /home/<myusername>/.mozilla/firefox/<myprofilename>
What can I do to address this issue? What I tried:
    1. browser.cache.use_new_backend 0 (restore to default)

Apparently I suck at symlinking. I wouldn't want to waste anybody's time. I'll revisit the topic once I learn the basics of symlinking. I'll use ASD in the meantime.
    EDIT:
OK, I got it now. The problem was that at the time I issued
    ln -s /home/<username>/.mozilla/firefox/<profilename>/0CachesSymlinked /home/<username>/.cache/mozilla/firefox/<profilename>
    the
    /home/<username>/.cache/mozilla/firefox/<profilename>
already existed (I left it out, don't ask)
Since I'm a symlinking savvy I'm going to symlink my ~/Downloads to my external drive
graysky wrote:@OP - Yes, since v21 of firefox, it uses ~/.cache for the caching just like chromium.  The simple solution is to mount ~/.cache as tmpfs in your fstab.  I documented this is psd's man page.  Here is a link describing how to do it.
I'd rather preserve contents of ~/.cache between reboots. Especially because it holds nautilus thumbnails. I'd rather keep my Firefox cache as well.
