Sync'ing home share content to iphone

I have an imac which i sync to my iphone 4, and my wife has a win xp laptop which she syncs to an iphone 3gs. both computers have itunes 10, and itunes libraries are being shared with home sharing. I bought an audio book from itunes store on my imac, and listened to it on my iphone 4. Now that I'm done listening to the book, my goal is to get the book onto my wife's iphone 3GS (OS 4.2) so she too can listen to the book. I copied the book into a playlist on her laptop via home sharing, but the book doesn't show up on her iphone when I sync that playlist (other content in the same playlist does successfully sync) What am I doing wrong?

In the settings for your wife's iPhone, do you have the boxes checked to allow for syncing of Books/Audio books? Make sure that the boxes are checked and it should be ready to go.

    Yes.
This allows you to view your videos & music from iTunes on the computer to the iPhone (in the Videos & Music apps).
On the iPhone, Settings > Music (or Videos) enter your AppleID under Home sharing.
Open Music or Videos, tap ••• More then Shared.

  • HT3819 can you home share apps between iphones and ipads?

just wondering if we're able to share apps in the house hold.  I have iphone 4, ios 5.1.  My husband has iphone 4, ios 4.3, (still hasn't upgraded to 5....lazy.)
    and we have an ipad2.
I'm just learning about the home sharing thing.....any help is appreciated!

Sounds like you got the answer you were looking for, but I wanted to add that when you have home sharing up on the computer and the home share account is activated, the home share account listed in iTunes has a little triangle to the right of the account name, and if you click that a submenu appears that lists the apps videos etc. on the other account you then can add those to your other devices/computers the same way you add songs, just drag them into your iTunes library listed at the top of the column.
I just wanted to add this to this thread since I found that it clears things up for other people searching for an answer.

  • Is it possible to sync a home sharing playlist to iPhone / iPad?

The issue:  My children each have PC laptops which they sync iPhones to, they each have a music collection on their own laptops.  I imported their playlist to my host machine and using Home Sharing I assumed I could sync their iPhones using their laptops to avoid having multiple music folders on each laptop and my host.  I would have thought that was part of the point of home sharing so I don't have to push music libraries to each computer when we get new music?  I am not wanting to have their devices to sync to my host machine as it's in my home office and I prefer not to have them in there on my computer all the time.
Or am I going about this totally wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi judATL,
Unless I'm sorely mistaken, if you have your iCloud account set up on the new phone, and when you hook up that new phone to iTunes, if everything is set as I will indicate below, the phone should sync with iCloud automatically, and iCloud should push those contacts to your Mac. It will comingle your contacts with the ones on the new phone, because it will be Contacts in the same iCloud account. If that's OK with you, then do the following:
    1.     Make sure your iCloud ID is signed onto the new phone
    2.     Make sure that Contacts is checked to sync in the iCloud options on the phone - Settings>iCloud>Contacts (checked)
    3.      Go into iTunes on your Mac and select the option to Prevent Automatic Sync under Preferences>Devices:
    4.      Hook up the new phone to iTunes and click on the Device when it shows up (DON'T SYNC just yet).
    5.     Click on the Info Tab in the Device Profile, and make sure it says the following for Contacts (click on the image below to make it big enough to read - you may need to double-click):
    6.     Make sure both your other iPhone and your Mac have Contacts checked in iCloud
Give it a little time for iCloud to retrieve and push the Contacts to your other phone and your Mac, and for it to retrieve and push your existing Contacts to your new phone. If it were me, I would wait for a couple of hours. Probably totally unnecessary to wait that long, but I don't like to make myself crazy by checking something every 2 seconds....
Once you know the Contacts have been pushed to iCloud and your other devices and your Mac, you can then sync the new phone to your iTunes account. Be sure to set up the Profile pages as you want for this new phone before syncing. As Phil indicated, once you do the sync, everything will be replaced with what is in your iTunes library (with the exception, in this case, of Contacts, which is being sync'd via iCloud).
Hope that helps! Post back with any questions!
    Cheers,

  • Syncing both home and work computers with iPhone

Is it possible to sync my home iCal with my iPhone and my work iCal with iPhone, so all events appear on my iPhone, but not have my work events merged to home and home events merged to my iCal at work? I want to keep the two desktop calendars separate, but have them combined on the iPhone. Is this possible? (I suspect not until the iPhone calendar has multiple calendars as iCal does) Thanks -- Rick

    Hey Rick,
This is not possible, when you sync the iPhone to a computer for the first time iTunes will ask if you want to Merge, replace on computer, or replace on iPhone. You may want to Merge and choose the option to put events created on the iPhone on another calendar on iCal, that you will delete later.
You can always backup iCal before you start, by going to File> Back up iCal.
You can also leave feedback and request features added to the iPhone online here:

I have to sync my ipad 2 with all of this but don't want to do this until the sync'ing is worked out between iphone and Mac. Any help is really appreciated.

  • ITunes 9 Home Share

I am sure this has been asked, but I can't seem to find the post, so...
I am just curious about the difference between homeshare in iTunes 9 and the old "share my library". I would like to keep my laptop and my desktop in sync; will home-share do this (e.g. keep two copies of each track in my library on each one of my computers, making it possible to listen to my entire library while away from my desktop?) If so, what's the best way to set this up? I have 10 gb of music and don't really want to try it over the network.

Home share will allow you to copy files (drag and drop) from any computers at home that are set up to use home sharing.
It can sync files purchased from iTMS but not other files you import. You access these options from the settings button in home sharing.

  • Can no one help? Sync'ing iPhone with a new computer after crash on old PC

    Hi all,
I'm hoping any lack of response was because you were taking time off at Christmas and not that I defeated the best of the bests.
Hopefully your reply is simply a case of saying 'YES!' to the steps below.
Here's a sort of potted timeline history as to what has occurred:
My iPhone 3GS was backed up via sync to 2 different location PCs.
The main location was here at 'home' where I managed my Music Library and Apps on a Vista based laptop.
My 'Work' PC simply dealt with sync of Contacts with a folder in Outlook.
The home PC was backed up fully typically once a fortnight.
A few weeks ago, my home PC had a catastrophic failure and it is clear I can't recover from the HDD.
I restored the key folders from the backup to a 'from backup' folder on the new PC and not the same folder structure as it has Windows 7.
From this folder I moved the entire contents of my music folder into Windows 7's music folder (and there is a sub-folder in there called 'itunes').
So, after reading a couple of threads, bizarrely enough, this one on iPad seems the nearest scenario to mine http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11527315
user, 'virtualgeo' summarises neatly the steps of sync'ing so I guess this would figure the same here but with an iPhone?
I'veinstalled the latest iTunes on my new PC and I'm ecstatic to see all my music and apps appear on running up iTunes for the first time.
I've gone to Edit>Preferences>Devices and checked the box next to "Prevent your iPod from automatically syncing" (However I see no previous backups being shown in this window. Is it worth recovering this from my backup?)
I've also authorised the new computer successfully.
So I was going to continue following virtualgeo's steps in the thread but not sync'ing contacts if that looks sensible?
Anything else I should do before connecting my iPhone to iTunes?
And out of interest, should I be backing up my iTunes separately to my PC backup?
    Many thanks in advance!

Well I forget the exact keys, but believe pressing and holding down CTRL before clicking Restore will allow you to browse and find the backup file (may be wrong).
In the end, as far as the iPhone thinks, it is a new computer so it will erase and resync stuff and as long as you loaded everything back into iTunes all should sync back. Main issue is other stuff like the data within the apps, notes, etc that are part of the backup which is why you would want to try to restore from the backup. If you don't mind losing data in apps (eg: do you care you have to relog into some apps and start over, don't care about game scores, etc) then you don't have to worry about the backup. If you have important data in some of those apps then you will need to restore from the backup.

  • Steps to Sync'ing iPhone with a new computer after crash on old PC

    Hi all,
My first post here and please allow me to say I reluctantly post as I hate wasting peoples time but could do with some handholding and advice. Hopefully it's just a simple case of you guys saying 'YES!'.

  • TS2972 "select share" of home share on itunes - is home share an all or nothing share? Is there a way to use parent controls to share some portions with children's iphones?

Is home share an all or nothing selection, or is there a way to "select share" with children's 5c iphones. Parent control feature to home share?
    Thanks in advance!

I can't promise this works as I haven't tested this however on every iOS Device in the Settings app under General & Restrictions you have the ability to restrict a ton of options.
Here's my two cents which you could try:
On the iOS Device go to settings -> General -> Restrictions
Go to the Music section, the TV Shows section, & Movies Section and select the appropriate rating you want your kids to have access to.
After setting this up try accessing the home sharing and see if the content you want blocked still shows up on their devices.
If the content still shows up then:
On iTunes on your PC or Mac find the content you wish to block (Home Movies, Movies, TV Shows, Music, etc)
Right click on the items you want blocked and change the rating (for example to R or NC-17).
I haven't tried this myself however on paper at least I think it should work.  If it does please report back and let everyone know and congrats on the new phones
