Sync iPhone 4S - Moving from XP to Windows 7 or 8

I'm currently running iTunes on an old and decrepit tower desktop running Windows XP, syncing both my iPod (80gb Gen 5 Classic I think) and iPhone on it. I also have a newer laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium, with iTunes installed and kept up to date, but no other content on it.
With the imminent demise of XP, how easy is it to start syncing my iPhone via iTunes on the laptop?
Is it a simple case of launching iTunes then plugging the iPhone into it (I assume I'll have to tell iTunes about the iPhone as I've never connected them before) and syncing or is it more complicated than that? Will I end up losing all of the apps that I have and need to download and reinstall them again?
Another option I'm looking at is buying a new Windows 8 desktop as I don't want the laptop to be my main computer and there's no way I can afford an Apple equivalent (unless I win the Euromillions). The same question applies - is it an easy thing to switch between operating systems or is it going to be a hassle.
Sorry if this is a stupid question that you're all already fed up of answering, but I'm not much of a tecchie, just a normal user who's a bit scared of buggering my phone.
Many thanks

Hello cheshireman,
Thank you for the details of what you are trying to accomplish.  The best way to start syncing your devices with a new computer is to move your iTunes Library from the original computer you sync with to the new computer you would like to sync with.
The article below describes several ways to transfer your iTunes Library, but for what you described, I recommend transferring your iTunes Library using an external drive:
The following table compares the methods to move music from your old computer to your new computer.
Method
Considerations
Home Sharing
The easiest option, as long as your new computer is already connected to the Internet.
External drive
Requires additional hardware but backs up your iTunes library.
Transferring purchases
Fastest, but only moves the content you purchased from the iTunes Store. Also requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod with the content on it.
Windows Migration Assistant
Works best for migrating from an old PC to a new Mac, and transfers more than iTunes.
You can find the steps for each of these methods in the article:

  • Need Help moving from mac to Windows

I did search the forum, but could not find it, so I thought I will ask.
I have to move from PowerBook to a Windows XP machine. (I see lots of threads moving from mac to windows but not otherway around).
How do I move the iTunes music. I want to keep the ratings, don't want to redo the ratings for 1000+ songs.
If it was previously asked and answered, please point me towards that thread.

    Folks,
Sorry for the redundant post. I had problem doing this, and was able to make it work. The trick was renaming the file iTunes Library to iTunes Library.itl (with the extension).
Once I did that, it works well.
    Thanks

  • PSE 9 Organizer Slide show can't find the slide show project files after moving from XP to Windows 7

A bad computer virus forced us to move all our files and programs from XP to Windows 7.  The PSE Editor seems to be working properly, but the Organizer Slide Show can't find the project files.  The structure of each of the 15 slide shows (blank slides) is there and any text I had added, but the pictures and music are missing.  Our computer Tech is not too familiar with PSE and may not have the files in the right spot.  Evidently XP and Windows 7 are organized a little differently and use different names.  He still has all the PSE files from our old hard drive in a folder and probably just needs to know where to put them.

+Windows Vista has different file locations than Windows XP+
This is the problem - the iTunes ITL file from XP is using XP paths, which don't exist in Vista. Here are some directions that have worked for others:
    - Copy your entire iTunes folder --- not just the iTunes Music folder but basically everything under "My Documents" - to external storage
    - Copy those files to your "Music" folder on your Vista system. The end result should be that you have "Documents\Music\iTunes" on Vista, where you had "My Documents\My Music\iTunes" on XP
    - Put a fresh install of iTunes on the Vista system.
    - When you run iTunes for the first time, hold down the Shift key. If it asks you to select a library file, pick the one you just transferred over.
    - The end result should be your library, including all ratings, play counts and play lists, sitting on the new system.

  • Moving from XP to Windows 7 - How to I take contacts?

    Going round the twist here!
I am moving everything to a fresh install of Windows 7. Currently my iPhone syncs my contacts to Windows Address Book in WinXP.
However Windows 7 does not have an Address Book, so how do I go about keeping all my contacts when I install iTunes onto Windows 7 and sync my iPhone to it?
    Thanks.

  • Can't sync iPhone 5 or 5S with iTunes, Windows 8

Having no luck syncing either an iPhone 5 or 5S with iTunes. Connect a phone and iTunes hangs. Followed KnowledgeBase article HT1923 to completely remove iTunes and other components, Restarted machine then ran CCleaner to remove all traces from the registry, restarted again, downloaded and ran itunes64setup.exe.
During the install got this message:
    DifXInst64.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click ok to close the application.
iTunes will start normally but when you connect either phone the "iPhone" tag will appear after a few minutes and that's it, nothing more. Can't access the phone through iTunes and can't access iTunes.
When I use the Task Manager to kill iTunes it indicates iTunes (32 bit) is not responding. Why 32 and not 64?
    How can I resolve this?

  • Sync iPhone 4 with Outlook 2010 via Windows 7

Is there a fix for this problem?  I have the current updates of Outlook 2010, Windows 7, and iTunes for my iPhone 4.  I cannot sync my iPhone contacts with Outlook.  When I entered new contacts into Outlook, and sync with iPhone, the contact information does not sync.  When I had an earlier version of Outlook, the contact information was sync with my iPhone.  But now, it does not work.  I made an appointment with the Apple support technician and the technician tried to help but he could not resolve the problem.  As indicated by himself, the tech said he was their best tech, and he had not heard of this problem.  Instead, he recommended placing all my contact onto iCloud.  Again, is there a fix for this problem?

Problems with a calendar sync in Outlook can generally be traced to a corrupt appointment at some time. It can happen from a shutdown in Outlook or any number of other reasons. If you can remember when the trouble began, see if you can locate an appointment on that day. You can also try and reset the sync history in iTunes, and can also run scanpst.exe and troubleshoot your Outlook file.
I've used every version of Outlook since 2000 and have been able to trace this issue a couple of times to an appointment that has a recurring setting. You can change the view of your appointments and list them. When you do that, you may be able to locate an appointment that doesn't look right. I had to print out all of my appointments once and then reenter them. Luckily I didn't have that many, so it didn't matter. Again, this is usually something corrupt in the Outlook file that will make the problem appear, and since everything else in Outlook is syncing except the calendar, that is the place to look.

  • How to sync iPhone video back from Mac to iPhone?

I synced a number of iPhone recorded videos to my iMac and deleted them from my iPhone. I now want to put some of them back on my iPhone. I made a playlist in iPhoto, dragged the videos into it and tried to sync that playlist back to my iPhone, but neither the list or the videos in it made it back to the iPhone.
Does anyone know how to get videos back to the iPhone again?
    thanks,
    Erik

You can use the iTunes Photos setup pane to sync photos and videos (Mac only, iTunes 9 or later required) back to the Photos application on iPhone. I added my video to the album I sync to my phone.
Be sure to check "Include videos".

  • Syncing iphone with itunes from "summary" tab

I normally sync my iphone with itunes.
When I connect the phone, I go to the “info” tab on top, the marked fields to sync are the contacts, calendars and notes. In the rest of the tables, nothing is marked (in the photos tab, sync photos is not marked and in the music tab, sync music is not marked) and the apps usually are copied during the sync as well.
Today, by mistake, instead of going to the “info” tab and pressing sync. I pressed sync as soon as I connected the phone, which is while I was on the “summary” tab. I noticed that the sync went as it does every time (backing up, syncing contacts, calendars, notes, copying apps)
After I was done, I went through the music and photos tabs to make sure they are still not marked, since I only want to sync the contacts, calendars and notes, as usual and I checked, there was nothing different than my usual every time sync. Nothing new was copied except my contacts and calendar entries that I want to sync.
I just want to make sure if it is any different between pressing “sync” while I am on the “summary” tab and pressing “sync” while I am on the info tab. Does it matter which tab I am on, or what matters is the marked fields to be synced?

Okay I think I now know what happens.
    - Just had new apps installed on my iPad
    - Deleted two of the new apps on iPad
    - Connected iPad to MacBook Pro
    - Watched out what happens on iTunes and it didn't show those two apps on the Home Screen preview windows but they were checked on the app list on the left and when I hit "Sync" on lower right corner iTunes placed those apps on one of the Home Screens on the iPad
Now, iTunes on my MBP is set to download any new apps bought on App Store on my iOS devices and when iPad is connected the checkbox for installing new apps automatically is unchecked.
So, for some reason, those new apps that have got downloaded to iTunes on my MBP but are already deleted on my iOS device, on sync iTunes treats them as they would or should be installed on my iPad. I don't know why that is but I think that has to be a bug and I'm reporting it. I thought iTunes checks which apps are installed on connection but it seems to unregonize that those apps were not installed on the iPad anymore.

  • Problem syncing iPhone apps with iTunes 12 on Windows XP

I'm having problems on multiple machines completing a first sync after restoring from iTunes backup.
I keep getting this pop-up error message once iTunes has identified the apps to sync (Step 7 of 7)
"The exception unknown software exception (Oxc0000417) occured in the application at location 0x78b2af3e"
I've attempted a complete iTunes re-install but it still throws up the same error
Has anyone else come across this problem?

Lovely, helpful detail, scott. Many thanks.
Get an error message "The application or DLL C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple Application Support\Core Media.dll is not a valid Windows image.
Taken at face value, you're having trouble with an Apple Application Support program file there. (Apple Application Support is where single copies of program files used by multiple different Apple programs are kept.)
Let's try something relatively simple first. Restart the PC. Now head into your Add or Remove programs control panel, select "Apple Application Support", click "Change" and then click Repair.
If no joy after that, try the more rigorous uninstall/reinstall procedure from the following post (although it's for Vista and 7, just read "Computer" as "My Computer", read "Uninstall a program control panel" as "Add or Remove programs control panel" and assume the system is 32-bit, and you'll be doing the right things):

  • AVCHD I'm moving from Mac to Windows I need advise for Transcode

My question is now that I no longer have ProRes422 because I'm now going to switch to a windows machine.  (Company invested into Windows Plugins, is the reason for the switch).  I need to know what format is suggested instead of ProRes.  I want to maintain video integrity and be able to easily edit like I did with prores422.  I can't seem to get a straight answer.  I realize there are many options.  But there has got to be a favorite or a recommended codec for smooth editing in Premiere Pro CC on a windows machine.
I also would love some advice on my workflow below.  Maybe someone could help me be more efficient.
I have a 6 hour event that is recorded with 5 panasonic cameras. AVCC Cam 3CCD HD Cameras.
This was my workflow on the MAC and why.  (I'm looking for advice, I realize I could have done this completely wrong)
All Adobe Products are current version of CC
I do all my Multicam syncing with Red Giant Plural Eyes 3 via the audio waveform matching.
I have a multichannel recorder that records various things in the venue that the cameras all sync to.  .wav
    1.  For my interview segments 1 camera I ingest SD card into Prelude and create sub clips and organize the small clips there and then import and edit in Premiere Pro CC
    2. For my 6 hour long footage.  (4 other cameras).  I have an AVCHD file.  During a 6 hour event while the camera is recording, the panasonic creates up to 24 or more .MTS files.
Note: that sometimes the camera men shut off the camera to change the battery or make an adjustment.I convert the .mts files individually to ProRes 422 for editing.  I don't merge the .mts files together, because when I multi cam sync I want to make sure that each .mts file is an independent file that can be synced via audio waveform.   There is a small overlap of the .mts files.  so each .mts file is it's own camera for the syncing process.  (This is very time consuming)  I would love suggestions on how to make a better workflow for this.
    Thank You

Okay, Ann!  I'm going to give it a try.  I have a great machine; however, Final Cut Pro X said it could handle AVCHD natively as well I also used Premiere Pro CC for mac trying AVCHD.  It hung up and turned my machine into a doorstop whenever, I applied any color  correction or effects.  So it was a really smooth option using an intermediate codec.  I'm willing to give it a shot on my windows machine here;however, many other discussion forums have warned about avchd being highly compressed and not very fun to work with.  I don't mind using an intermediate codec if it makes my job run more smoothly.

  • Moving from Mac to Windows..how to mess things..

Today i instaled a new laptop with windows 8...
Instaled iTunes and since i have near 1Tb of music, all my music files are in a volume in my MacMini , ex : "Music"
As coping take to long, i connect my MAC external drive, the volume "Music" to my windows pc, and maped with "M".
Before open iTunes in w8, exported my library, and with notepad changed the path from ..volume/music to "file://localhost/M:/", my path to music files in w8.
Open Itunes, changed the media folder to "M:", and imported my library from the xml file.
The clicks for keep itunes media organized are ON..
From 22000 songs, and almost 1200 albuns, ONLY 860 albuns are imported and thousands of songs are lost!
Message"Some songs are not imported because they cant be found".
Some albuns are incomplete, some songs with long names are imported, others not.
    Mostly classic...
    Truncate filenames ?
Strangely, the songs that are not imported they ALL have filenames truncated, but some songs with small filenames are not imported also.
And now my external hardrive with +22000 songs are completely messed songs filenames.
I use iTunes to catalog my music, listen when working and my MacMini conected to an Exoteric DA converter.
I also have all the cds....
I have backups from Mac, but i dont have a copy of this drive at this moment.. so i need  to crawl al my music in iTunes and fix all.
    Tedious work.
Any ideas how to fix this ?

  • Audio/midi out of sync when project moved from different computers

i work on logic with both my imac and macbook. when i move project x from one to the other machine (in either direction) the audio and midi get out of sync. as i do not do things to the grid, i can't specify how far things are going out of wack. recording delay settings are the same, as are those for buffer size, etc. I am using a Duet interface with both machines.
    any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
Have had the same problem but with Powerpoint. All I could imagine is that this problem has something to do with the difference of the internal speed of the Imac and MacBook Pro. Solution: nothing but always working on the same machine (for me).

  • Moved from Mac to Windows and DNxHD files will not relink

Hi, as I have benn having problems getting '1080p/25 DNxHD 36' files to play smoothly on Mac I have booted into windows and thought I would give it a go.  I installed the Avid Codec pack and launched the project.
It came up with the relink dialog and I started selecting the files (bit annoying, what if it was a big project, would I have to spend a day just relinking). I select the first file and got a error saying 'canont link media' and 'The selected file canot be relinked because its type (audio) does not match the original file's type (audio and video)'. so I clicked cancel. I played the file in windows and it had audio and video.  I then tried importing it in premiere and it thinks it is audio only;(.
    Any ideas?
    Ben

If you attempt to start a new project and import one of those files does it allow you to simply import them?

  • Sync Probs after moving to Windows 7 on a new hard drive

Hi, I desperately hope that you can help me.
I have a 2G iPhone and moved from Windows XP to Windows 7. I did the same on another PC with an iPod, and it worked flawless, moved the library to the new folder, bingo.
But with the iPhone it didn't work. iTunes doesn't recognize the phone correctly, and iTunes doesn't recognize the library.
Is there any way to reinstall the iPhone from one of the previous automatic backups, so that iTunes recognizes it after the procedure?
Can someone please tell me in which folder the backup files usually are? I still have the old hard drive in my PC, only with a different drive letter now, but all folders/files are still there.
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Best regards,
    Peter

From the 2nd article I located the 'Backup' folder, but it only contains a bunch of files with extensions .mddata, .mdinfo and three .plist files, but no .ipsw file to backup from.
Try quitting iTunes> copying the folder from your backup drive to the new drive(place in location mentioned in the article above)> then launch iTunes again> and restore the iPhone from backup.
    Any more ideas please?
Would it let's say get me back to normal if I 'buy' all programs again from my account? Because if I log into my account it doesn't recognize that I already downloaded and bought anything? Or does iTunes and the iTunes store think I'm coming here with another brandnew iPhone and have to buy it all over again?
Of course I can restore everything manually this way, but it's a pain...
You can download the apps again for free, but that will not recover any saved data that is stored in the iPhone backup.
Also, iTunes can switch between multiple library folders by holding shift while you launch it. This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589 provides more details. So, you may have to point iTunes to the music library, if it's still on the backup drive.
If you decide to move the iTunes library folder, this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364 will help ensure nothing is lost.
