Sync is a nightmare...

With iTunes, sync is very very hard. Well, let's see my problem :
I have a 16 Go iPhone 4 ; it is a great phone and I love all his features. But its space is not enough for all my photos. For example, if I want to have all my friends' faces in my iPhone, I cannot because there are too much photos. I would like to sync only "x last faces" but I cannot. iTunes enables only syncing faces but not a part of faces.
Another example to the nightmare of iPhone users : iTunes
What can be done with this ?

Loyal Mac users upgrade to Lion.
What fantastic bit of info.
All I have to do is replace a bunch of my Macs with the latest and greatest and then get rid of all my clients that insist on using older uncool software to generate those annoying files that I'll no longer be able to work with.
Terri, don't blame Apple for the situation, particularly with Quicken.  Apple opened Lion up to developers a long time ago, and most software publishers took advantage of this time to update their products so they would be compatible with Lion once it came out.  Intuit, the publisher of Quicken, either chose not to update or is still working on it.  Your problem with Quicken rests with Intuit, which simply has not kept up with advances in the technology.  Look at what they say on their web page about Lion:
"Quicken for Mac 2005, 2006 and 2007 were originally built for the older PowerPC architecture, and were able to run on newer Intel-based Macs due to an Apple technology called Rosetta. As of Mac OS X 10.7, Apple has discontinued support for Rosetta."
http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/install--register--and-convert/quicken-fo r-mac-compatibility-with-mac-osx-10-7-lion/GEN83208.html
PowerPC Macs have not been made since 2006, yet Intuit continues to rely on outdated hardware for their flagship software product.  I understand your frustration with all this, but you should direct your ire at the proper party:  Intuit.  By not updating their software as so many other software publishers have already done does a disservice to their customers, as you are finding out.
I never mentioned Quicken at all in my posts. Personally I don't use Quicken.
I do need to open up FrameMaker, Pagemaker and dozens of other files that clients give me.
I just need an OS that runs programs that I need to use in order to work with my clients. Lion is not that OS.

I have just been given an iphone, and I am finding it impossible to sync my contacts onto the iphone???... Help

It's pretty much impossible to offer much in the way of help when you include no details. We need at least the following before anyone can even begin to diagnose the problem and offer suggestions:
    - What OS is running on your computer?
    - what version of iOS is on the iPhone?
    - in what application are you keeping your contacts on the computer?
    - how are you trying to sync?
    - and what happens when you try?
Once we have that information, then someone can probably offer advice.
By the way, you posted originally in the iPod touch forum. I've asked the Hosts to move your thread to the iPhone forum.

  • ICal syncing from desktop to iPhone and iPad is a nightmare

I have a mid-2011 MBA running Mountain Lion, an iPhone 5C, and an iPad 2.
I use the Lightning add-on for Thunderbird for a calendar, but it is buggy. I really want to go back to iCal so I can have my calendar on my phone and on my iPad, but syncing is a nightmare. I cannot find any plain language information on the rationale behind why syncing works the way it does so that I can figure out how to make it work correctly.
    What I want:
iCal desktop to be my primary calendar and to sync all updates to my iPad and iPhone. If I add an update on my iPad or iPhone, I want it to show up on iCal the next time I connect my device to the computer.
    What actually happens:
iCal desktop is the secondary calendar. Anything that happens on the iPad and iPhone is more important. If I add an iCal event on the desktop app while I am connected to my iPhone and iPad, the events I create disappear because they do not exist on the iPad and iPhone. If I create them when the devices are not connected, when I do connect I either lose the events or they get triplicated.
I do not use iCloud to sync, only iTunes by checking 'sync calendars.' I have given up on ever making iCloud syncing work for anything. Last time I tried it, it just deleted all my books, music, movies, etc. (thank goodness for Time Machine backups) and quadrupled all my calendar events...
Can someone please take pity on me and explain how to make syncing

Can't edit posts for some reason and my post got truncated.
"... to make syncing work between my Apple devices. I am a savvy computer user and that this boggles me frankly boggles me."
    Thank you.

  • Store sign in error "network connection was lost"

I'm trying to sign into my iTunes account and it keeps telling me: "We could not complete your iTunes store request. The network connection was lost."
But I am still connected to my network and able to get on the internet. I have rebooted my Macbook and I am still getting the same errors
I am running MB Pro, Snow Leopard 10.6.7, and iTunes 10.5.2.
I get this error if I try to sign in or out of my iTunes account.

Yeah, I also reset the router and cable modem but that didn't do anything. It's so frustrating, everything that Apple does is so intuative and usually so user friendly but iTunes has been one big headache for me from the beginning, between me, my wife, 2 daughters and son, we have 3 iPhones and 5 iTouches, and I have the house iTunes account, and a work one, my wife has a work and my daughters have ones at their stepmothers house also, now trying to keep these all synced is a nightmare!! All I want is to be able to plug in whatever I have an update the software of drop daughter A's Cody Simpson CD on daughter B's iTouch... but since it's synced with her mother's computer she's out of luck, and that *****.

  • Multicam editing and live art

I've been doing a little bit multicam editing with FCPX now and when using multiple cameras on a single occasion everything goes nice and smooth. But now I have a different kind of situation that I need some good ideas with. I have been shooting a live art performance with a single camera in multiple occasions and I want to cut them as a one multiangled video. The thing is, the show is never quite the same. There is (pre-recorded) music and dance that always goes the same, but there is speech and other not beat-by-beat stuff in between. Syncing is a nightmare since the whole thing is unsyncable.
I am now open for all kinds of ideas, so keep them coming. Should I edit every music/dance-piece by themselves as a multicam clip, export, import and put together in a new project? The speech parts might be undoable with multicam tool, but that won't need lots of cuts anyway. I've been trying a bit of this and that, but have no idea what would be most convenient way to do this. I think some kind of splitting into scenes kind of thing needs to be done anyway for my media.

If I understand correctly, you want to make a movie out of multiple takes of more or less the same performance and I'm not sure how Multicam doesn't create more issues than it solves.  The idea of multicam is to display different angles of a single take – usually with a common audio source.  So unless I'm overlooking something (which wouldn't surprise me in the slightest) introducing multicam into the workflow would make your task more difficult.
One approach would be to lay out the parts (clips) of the performance you feel best tell the story on the primary storyline. Then use secondary storylines from the best takes to add interest as cutaways. Alternatively, if you wanted single source sound, you could experiment with a music bed as your primary stroyline, but then I think you would constantlly be wrestling with sync.
Best of luck on your project.

  • TS4097 we have multiple users in our family and multiple devices all sharing one itunes account.  i think we are all synced to one icloud account and it is a nightmare....contacts lost, text messags showing up on multiple devises etc.  how do we fix this?

We have our family sharing one itunes account.  we have 3 iphones, 2 macbook airs, 2 ipads and 1 mac.  I am not sure how we even got started on the icloud but somehow we did and everything is a mess.  The ipads are showing the text messages, the contacts are all combined, the apps that my duaghter downloads are appearing on all devices.  how do we fix this so contacts are not shared, messages are not shared and apps are not automatically synced to all devises?

You have two different issues going on.  You are getting each other's messages because you are sharing the Same Apple ID for iMessage.  This can be corrected by going to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive on add the devices and doing one of the following:
Either uncheck the email address shown under "You can be reached by iMessage at" on all of your devices; or
If you want to continue to receive iMessages at this email address on one of your devices, on all of the other ones tap the Apple ID at the top, sign out, then sign back in using a different Apple ID (so all devices will be using a different Apple ID for iMessage).  Note: you can continue to share an Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and App stores.  It does not need to be the same as the ID you are using for iMessage, FaceTime and other services.
The second issue is that you are sharing the same iCloud account on your devices.  When you do this any data you sync with the shared iCloud account such as contacts is merged and will appear on all devices connected to the account.  To fix this you both need to have separate iCloud accounts (you can continue to share the same Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and app stores).
First decide which device(s) will be keeping the current iCloud account.  On the one(s) that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that in your camera roll or backed up somewhere else that you want to keep on the device(s), save these to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this device, not from iCloud.  The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On [iDevice].  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a separate Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.  Repeat this process for all the devices that you need to migrate to new accounts.
When finished, to un-merge the data in your accounts you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting the other person's contacts from your account, and vice versa).

  • Ever since I updated to iOS 7, organization of my music is a nightmare.  It is organized perfect on my iTunes, but will not sync properly to my phone.  I signed up for iTunes Match hoping it would help and it only sent me further down the spiral.

Any changes I have made to my iTunes after the iOS 7 upgrade do not sync and it has even reorganized music I had before very poorly.  iTunes Match made it worse.  Now, I cannot even get into my music on the phone, it just tells me it can be synced from the Cloud.  However, the Cloud apparently does not like my organization either.  I just want the music on my phone to match how I have it organized on iTunes.  This is driving me crazy.  I am totally Team Apple, but this music thing is quickly turning my loyalty.  My music is the main thing I use my phone for.

  • Restoring new iPhone 4S from iCloud backup has created an app sync nightmare with iTunes

I've restored my new iPhone 4S from iCloud and plugged it into my computer to sync over the apps so they wouldnt have to redownload via iCloud. Hit the initial ok dialogue button, which had an auto-sync apps option checkmarked under it (this was the only dialogue option and only checkmark). Now iTunes wants to reload all apps and erase app data.
The phone is peforming as expected, downloading the apps one-by-one from iCloud, however, I won't be able to sync the phone, as leaving apps sync checked will rewrite all apps (erasing app data and adding apps I don't want on my phone), and unchecking apps sync will delete all apps from the phone. I've tried removing the ~/Library/iTunes/ folder, hoping it would force iTunes to re-initialize the sync config. This didn't help at all.
Any suggestions? I really don't want to re-restore from iCloud, but thinking I'm gonna have to and hope that not checking the auto-sync apps (when the phone is plugged in for the first time) will fix the issue. It's rather mindnumbing that there doesn't appear to be a less painful option for the simple task of setting up a new device from an old device iCloud backup. Thanks in advance and I apologize if this is hard to follow.

Ok, so this is pretty infuriating. I've gone ahead and restored from iCloud again. This time when I plugged my phone into iTunes for the first time, I unchecked the option to automatically sync apps. As expected, the Apps are not set to sync now, however, the computer does not display the apps loading on the phone, so if I did go ahead and turn on App sync, I would end up losing all app data. It appears that I will have to let all apps redownload from iCloud before I can do anything regarding syncing with iTunes. I can't believe this is the only option. I suppose I could turn off iCloud backup on my iPhone 4, allow it to create a local backup, then local restore onto iPhone 4S, then turn on iCloud backup. That seems a little too band-aidish to me, though.

Edit: Yes, I have 10.7.2 and all available system updates as of today (10/14/11).

  • We just bought our boys iPad minis.  We have a "family ipad" now with lots of music and apps the boys love.  Will syncing them to icloud cause a nightmare with calendars, music, and emails etc being shared?

We just bought our children 2 ipad minis.  We have a "family ipad" now that contains lots of their apps, music, books etc.  I am afraid to connect the minis to icloud for fear they will also sync our calendars, email, etc.  Does anyone have experience with a family using icloud and do you recommend starting over with everyone having their own account or merging the family?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
To begin with, I would like to try to explain Apple's confusing nomenclature in regard to iCloud.
Apple have called the whole cloud thing iCloud, there are a number of features under the iCloud umbrella, some of which require their own login. iTunes is one of these, another is what Apple have unfortunately also called iCloud too.
You can use the same Apple ID (account) to login to both iCloud and iTunes, but you don't need to and often users will login to each service using a different ID.
The part that you need to remember is that the services available when you log into iCloud are completely different and unrelated to those when you log in to iTunes. Your iCloud login enables mail, contacts, calendars, find my phone, Back to My Mac, Documents & Data sharing and photostream, it does not affect any of your iTunes services.

  • Why syncing is a ridiculous nightmare

On my Mac Pro I have all my photos in folders. There are appx. 30,000 images in many folders, so appx. 60,000 if you count RAWs (I always shoot RAW+JPEG). I use Adobe Bridge and the Finder to organize my photos into categories. For instance I have "~/Pictures/Cats/Milner Paw Licking", along with appx. 35 other subfolders in "~Pictures/Cats/". I also have "~/Pictures/Airplanes/Hillsoboro Air Show 2010/" in which are subfolders, "/Good/" and "/Blurry/" where I have sorted the wheat from the chaff. Each such subfolder, whether it be nested in "Cats" or "Airplanes", has both the RAW and JPG files, as well as varios TIF and PSD edits.
Now, say I wanna put onto my iPhone only the JPG, TIF, and PSD files, but not the RAW files, from certain subfolders, for example lets just say for the sake of argument: the JPG images in the aformentioned "Milner Paw Licking" and "Good" folders. And whenever I add new images to those folders then I want syncing in iTunes to automatically add the new images to my iPhone.
AND NO; you fools, I do not use the pathetic iPhoto software, for it is garbage that *****; and NO I refuse to pay money for Aperture, since it makes me want to carve my brain out with a rusty spoon, the way it does away with the sensible file/folder architecture I have used to organize my photos, and all my files, on my Macs since FREAKING 1984!
So please tell me, how do I achieve the above task of syncing said subfolders WITH ONLY iTunes and the Finder?
OH WAIT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE. Can someone please shoot me now?

    Graham Outterside wrote:
Why do you NEED 60,000 raw images on your phone ? Not that they are in RAW format of course. Its a phone not a portable computer.
You did not understand my post. In fact you got it backwards. I don't want the RAWs to sync. Only the JPEGs in the folders I select, which contain both RAW and JPG. The problem is you can not do this. Instead, iTunes copies the RAW and the JPG so there are two of every photo on my phone, which is dumb.
    Out of interest purely.
Profanities will get your thread pulled - it impresses no-one and makes people even less sympathetic.
I'm not looking for sympathy and I didn't curse. Though you wouldn't know what word I actually used, since it was censored, but it was not a curse word. Just me being blunt.
If there were two applications, one for music and one for photo's there would be many many more complaints about having to sync twice in effect. The current solution serves the overwhelming majority - even me with 10,000 images on the phone quite happily and without fuss.
No, you misread me again. I did not suggest two different apps for syncing. I am suggesting one app for playing music, and a different one for syncing music, photos, movies, etc. That is much more sensible than kludging a feature into iTunes (syncing photos) that it was not originally intended for.
The fact that iTunes is used for syncing is merely an accident of bloatware evolution, stemming from all "iDevices" having the old iPod as a common ancestor. Back in the days of the first iPod, it made perfect sense to sync the device with iTunes, since all it did was play music. Since all "iDevices" share this common ancestor, they inherited its method of syncing. This is because Apple has not bothered to renovate, modernize, or update the syncing paradigm since the original iPod.
However, now that the iPhone 4 and iPad are mobile computing devices that are more powerful than the Macintosh computers from decades past, it's high time to totally renovate and redo the syncing process. My photo syncing problem is just one example of how broken and incapable the current syncing system is.
Its clear you don't understand the iTunes GUi and thats fair enough as you don't appear to need it. Just as well you don't need it to sync photo's really so I don't see why you have an issue.
Wrong again. I fully understand it, and worse, I do in fact need it. Because right now it's the only option, therefore I need it if I want to sync photos. Sigh, you really don't understand any of what I'm saying.
The software clearly isn;t designed for your pattern of use which is again, fair enough so perhaps you could use something else which gives you more of what you want - like a Droid and Windows if thats what it takes.
You are right that the software is not designed for my pattern of use (syncing photos from my Mac Pro to my iPhone in the way I described in the first post). Also, it is not a constructive approach to tell me to give up on Apple. No, I want Apple to clean up this mess. It's ridiculous. Switching to Windows or Android is not an option for me for many reasons. But I am really tired of Mac people putting up with, and making excuses for, inferior aspects of the Mac platform, like iTunes photo syncing. Why can't you just agree it's garbage and that it would be way better if it were done properly?

  • Facebook sync NIGHTMARES!!!!

I have recently discovered iphoto's capability of syncing with facebook. (or should i say incapabilities, lol)
I have 2 major issues with Faces/Tags and Syncing in general.
    Faces/Tag Issue:
I have used the Facebook App on my iphone to sync my Friends with my Contacts( which is synced with the contacts on my computer). I have spent time to add Faces to a majority of my photos in iphone, however they are not translated to Facebook tags. The Names of people on the tags are correct, they are just not linked to their facebook name. This is weird since Facebook has already synced with my contacts on my iphone (adding the images and facebook page addresses to my contacts).
    Syncing Issue:
Anytime I try to edit or add new photos to the facebook albums, it doesn't sync to facebook. It either freezes during the sync, or it finishes but doesn't actually add photos to facebook. I will also have to Force quit iPhoto anytime this happens. At rare occurrences, iPhoto will sync to facebook to add the new photos, but it loses all of my facebook tags (even if the photos had 'Faces" marked from iPhoto)
I have tried deleting the preference files on these, but still having the issue. How can i fix this?

The iPhoto/Facebook name link is via the person's facebook e-mail address not their name - make sure that each one you want to show in Facebook has their facebook e-mail address included (faces page clic on the "i" and turn the entry over and check/enter their identification info

  • 3.01 update has been a nightmare - now 3GS won't sync

    Hi there,
I updated my 32Gb 3GS to 3.01 on Friday (iTunes also updated to 8.21 on my MB Pro at the same time). Like many people, I had to restore the phone afterwards. Unfortunately, it 'hung' during the restore, and I had to Force Quit. I have been through this 'restore-hang-force quit' scenario about 20 times now. On the lucky occassions when the restore completes I am unable to sync movies, music or photos (apps seem to be ok). The sync gets to about song 16 of 5000 odd and just hangs again. I've re-installed iTunes twice, deleted phone backups and done a new iPhone set up, but still the same. iPod Touch/classic etc still sync as they should. Any further suggestions? Thanks

  • Nightmare with repaired AUDIO slipping out of sync ???

I have a concert shot on Sony camcorders 48Khz, and audio recorded to LOGIC PRO 44.1 Khz
    My workflow is roughly this:
    1. Log and Transfer footage into FCP.
    2. Arrange the clips into a rough edit on the timeline.
    3. Export the camera audio from FCP, as it is on the timeline. ( to 44.1 AIFF file)
    4. Sync up the good audio in LOGIC PRO to the camera audio track.
    5. Bounce the good audio in LOGIC PRO ( to Both 44.1 and 48 AIFF files).
    6. Reimport the good audio track into Final Cut Pro, to replace the camera audio.
Logic is working in 44.1 as that what the multi-tracks were recorded in...
I tried importing the 44.1 and the 48 and both do the same
Theoretically, this should sync everything, lThe problem is the "good" audio from the Logic slowly slips out of sync with the camera audio.
BUT !!!!!....The WAVE FORMS SHOW THEN IN SYNC ????????
It just plays back a little faster....??? and goes out of sync
Another clue is that when I export the audio from the rough edit in the timeline (step 3), I can reimport the file that FCP produces and, when I put it on the timeline, it exhibits the same behavior: The exported audio track from FCP slowly slips out of sync with the EXACT SAME audio track on that's already on the timeline. How could it be slipping out of sync with itself after an export?
    What a pain ??????

the Wave form is looking correct and all in sync
So, (to confirm) the audio waveform is syncing with the video?...very strange situation with the playback/sync.
Have you tried running Disk Utility/Repair Disk and/or trashing prefs? (I realize trashing preferences is a bit of a pain, but it does resolve many issues).
