Sync iTunes and iPhoto

I have an iMac and a Macbook (just bought today, woohooo). I want to sync my iTunes Library and iPhoto Library on the two computers. I could just copy the libraries to my time capsule and point the programs to that location, but then when I take the Macbook on the road I won't have access to my iTunes or iPhoto library. What I want to do is sync like I do with my .Mac, but that doesn't work for iTunes or iPhoto.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

I've done some research on the net and it doesn't look good. I think the best solution is to put the iPhoto library on the time capsule and assign the library for each computer to the file on the Time Capsule. I can then copy the library from the time capsule to each hard drive from time to time. That will mean I have three copies which is a nice backup and I can still access the photos when I'm away from the network. If I make any changes while not a home I can flag those photos and move them individually.
Two questions:
1. how would I move the photo's individually?
2. how can I setup something to automatically copy the iPhoto library down from the time capsule from time to time?
Sorry if these are stoopid questions, but I just made the switch to Macs this month.
Thanks!

  • IPhone will not sync iTunes and iPhoto

Just bought an iPhone a couple weeks ago. No problems transferring (sync) iTunes and iPhoto (and everything else) on day 1. Now looking to sync a second time and no luck. When I connect iPhone to my MacBookPro, iTunes and iPhoto automatically open but no sync. And under File >> in iTunes, there is no option to sync iPhone. I have tried restarting computer, restarting iPhone, trying both ISB ports on the computer (the basic troubleshooting in the manual). Again, iTunes and iPhoto open automatically as if it wants to sync, but does not. Any suggestions ? Sorry if this is a common problem. I could not find it with a cursory search. Thanks.

Try downloading the current iTunes version and re-install it over the existing. No need to delete iTunes on your computer first.

  • How to sync iPhone with MBP connected via ethernet to PowerBook where iTunes and iPhoto content resides

I just got the iPhone 5, but I am still using a PowerBook G4 machine that will not sync with my new iPhone.  I was wondering if I could
    1) create a new user for myself on my brother's MBP
    2) connect that MBP with my PowerBook via ethernet
    3) have iTunes and iPhoto on my new MBP user to be mapped to my PowerBook iTunes and iPhoto Library folders respectively
    4) sync the iPhone with my new user on my brother's MBP and acquire all of the content from the iTunes and iPhoto libraries that reside on my PowerBook
Will this work?  Does anyone recommend a different solution to get the content from my PowerBook G4 1.33 to my new iPhone 5

Now I have made a search and you are right. A problem which seemed unique to me is, in fact, very common. It is unbelievable that on one hand the Apple programmers can create great software, but on the other hand they act like retards when they forget about some basic functionality. I really can't believe that I will lose my purchases simply because at Apple nobody thought that people do install a fresh system from time to time. What a shame.
But what about consolidation of accounts? I am being asked to provide account ID which I don't even remember anymore. It seemed natural for me that I download some applications and simply go on with life, just as in about any other website on the internet. But suddenly Apple says that I will not be able to save or transfer my application because I need some funky ID. Hello Apple... My application is already on my phone so I should be able to copy it where I want without some ID. That's really odd.
Anyway, I will try to search the forum and solve my problems. I simply didn't even think in my wildest dreams that Apple software could be sometimes so ********.

  • IMAC Using sync in iTunes and iPhoto?

When my first set up my Mac,I had several apps set up to sync. Since, I have added iTunes Match.
in iTunes I see both devices, iPad, iPhone and noticed the music, photos and even books are not checked to sync. Is this because of iTunes Match and in ICloud? I want to know more about these while I am getting more familiar with my Apple products Over the years.
instead of leaving things the way they are, I want to make sure everything is set correctly. I want music and photo contents on all three to be different. Right now, the most important is to make sure iTunes on my Mac are set correctly for syncing. Shouldn't music and photos set to sync or this being done by iTunes match?
dont know why but suddenly not sure and want to find out recommendations and examples of what some of are set up. I know making this more than it should and appreciate your help.
    thanks,
    DOn

I had the same error (1102) ~ both my iTunes and iPhoto Folders are located on my external drive which is a Drobo, and what I discovered was this: The Drobo (USB Connection) needed to be re-mounted (by unplugging the USB cable and re-plugging it) ... although I could see files in the Finder window, the Drobo was not showing up when I opened the Drobo Dashboard. Re-mounting it fixed the accessibility problem, but iTunes still did not seem to know where my iPhoto folder was, so I opened iPhoto while holding down the option key to tell iPhoto where my iPhoto Library folder is (on the Drobo) ... then re-opened iTunes and the photos synced properly. Previous to this the "Photos" tab in iPhoto did not show any folders or albums, so this may not be exactly the same issue you had, although perhaps it will help? Good Luck!

Do you have a local network setup either wired or wireless? If so, then have both computers connected to the network. Enable File Sharing on both computers in Sharing preferences. Select the startup drive on each computer. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the box labeled, Shared Folder.
You can now keep both computers in sync by using a third-party backup/sync utility that will work with a network setup such as:
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro

  • Sync two iPhones with two different iTunes and iPhoto libraries script

I'm sure this is answered elsewhere, but I was not able to find a solution to this easily. My wife "L" and I, "J" have iPhones, also different tastes in music, and wanted a way to not have all of our own pictures filling up our default iPhoto library. So we first set up two different iTunes and iPhoto libraries. Two diffrent contact libraries would be nice, but contact groups worked okay for this. But then everytime we would sync, it meant opening both iTunes and iPhoto while holding the option key then selecting which library depending on which phone was going to be pluged in. Believe me, you only need to have "Automatically sync" turned on and plug in the wrong iPhone before all sorts of problems arise!
Let me state, I am not fluent with AppleScript, but rather I found bits and pieces close to what I wanted here and there on the www and kept playing until it worked. This works flawlessly everytime on our MacBook, and, unless your initials are J & L and there are only two of you, you will have to change some letters here and there throughout the script to make it work for your situation. Think of this as a rough draft and start to play. I'm sure there is a simpler way to write this script, so to all the real authors, please re-write!
So we have two libraries for iTunes and iPhoto. One set of libraries named J's iTunes library and J's iPhoto library, and another two named L's iTunes library and L's iPhoto library. I wanted to create one app that would close the current libraries, and open the correct ones (or return to our default libraries) depending on what iPhone was to be synced. Using AppleScript Editor and saving the script as an application, this is what I came up with:
display dialog "Do you want to continue to set iTunes and iPhoto libraries?" buttons {"Cancel", "Continue"} default button "Continue"
    tell application "iPhoto" to quit
    tell application "iTunes" to quit
set Y to the button returned of (display dialog "Which libraries do you want to use?" buttons {"L's", "Reset to Defaults", "J's"} default button "Reset to Defaults")
if Y = "Reset to Defaults" then set Y to "i"
    if Y = "L's" then set Y to "l"
    if Y = "J's" then set Y to "j"
    tell application "System Events"
      key down option
      delay 1
              tell application "iPhoto"
      activate
      delay 3
                        tell application "System Events"
      key up option
                        end tell
              end tell
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      keystroke Y
              tell application "System Events"
      key code 36
              end tell
    end tell
    delay 2
    tell application "System Events"
      key down option
              tell application "iTunes"
      activate
                        tell application "System Events"
      key up option
      keystroke return
                        end tell
              end tell
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      keystroke Y
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      key code 36
    end tell
if Y = "i" then tell application "iTunes" to quit
if Y = "i" then tell application "iPhoto" to quit

    Hi, thanks for your answer.
Unfortunately this does not work because iTunes still keeps one account with the store active regardless which library I open. So when I switch the account in the store it will be switched for both libraries. That means that I can not separate the iPhone applications and all the other specific sync parameters.
I thought about using my wife's account on the Mac and pointing iTunes to the new library - the problem here is that then the iPhoto library is not accessible any more......
I can't really believe that there is no solution from Apple - I mean there must be more couples and families out there with 2 and more iPhones syncing with one iTunes / iPhoto etc libraries.
Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • Any way to restore iTunes and iPhoto libraries from failed Time Machine backup?

Is there a way to restore iTunes and iPhoto libraries from an unmountable Time Machine backup?
Background: I received an update alert on my iMac (mid-2010, 1TB) from Time Machine (wirelessly connected to a Time Capsule, 2TB 2013)  that it required an update and required rebooting, of course, it happened when I was in the middle of a project and I postponed the restart for later.  That evening I turned off the computer and coincidentally the next morning, the iMac would not start; it loaded to the Apple logo and about an 1/8 of the progress bar would load before the iMac would turn off.
The iMac had been fine to that day (OS upgrades and all since 2010) so I was assuming something misfired when I declined the Time Machine update. I tried the PRAM and SMC resets mentioned in the forums but no dice. I then went into Disk Utility to try repairs and there were errors on the hard drive that could not be fixed. My next step was to erase the drive and restore from my Time Machine backup. Before doing that I checked Disk Utility and to my horror,  it told me that my Time Machine backups were unmountable so of course my first thought was that all my files were gone.
The TC was under warranty so I called support and they referred me to the local Genius Bar. The Genius was great and showed me that my files weren't lost even though the Time Machine backup was unmountable. They recommended I erase the partitions, starting from scratch and I would have to transfer the Time Machine backup files manually by directly connecting an ethernet cable from the TC to the computer. If that didn't work, the hard drive was bad and needed replacement which they could take care of.
I followed their recommendation and the hard drive is fine. I was so relieved to hear that my files were safe that I forgot to ask about all of the metadata that was lost in iTunes (de-selected songs, playlists, rankings, play counts) and iPhoto (geotags, names, etc). Any ideas / help? I sank considerable time into my music and photos and would love to have that time back.
FWIW, I'm in the process of buying an external hard drive as a secondary backup to the TC as my confidence is a little shaken on the product line - the first time I ever actually need a backup and the backup is unmountable. My whole point of spending a little more and buying into the Apple ecosystem for a backup solution was to streamline the backup process and avoid these types of issues.

Thank you for the reply. I tried the Disk Utility to repair my TC's Time Machine backup disk with no luck, it stopped with the message:
    Disk utility stopped repairing "iMac"
Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
It took a night but I was able to copy all the TC Time Machine files to the external hard drive as a backup to a backup just in case. I'm still pretty bummed the TC's backup didn't allow for Disk Utility's restore functionality. Fortunately, the iPhoto library backup I dragged to the iMac from the Time Capsule backup worked without a hitch. On the downside, the "iTunes Library.itl" backup I dragged over is locked so now I'm checking out the forums for any ways to fix that. I temporarily created a new iTunes library with all my apps and music but plan on reverting to the old iTunes library if possible so I can start syncing my iOS devices again.

  • My iPhone 4S is picked up by both itunes and iphoto but doesn't show up in Finder

My iPhone 4S is picked up by both itunes and iphoto but doesn't show up in Finder and I can't get it to sync with iCal.  Any ideas?  I've had trouble in the past with cameras and other devices not showing up in Finder and I don't know what is wrong!  I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 which is quite old but this is its main problem...
    Thanks!

The sync is 2 way. If you created items in the calendar on the phone, however, BEFORE you set up the sync relationship, those items are stored in the calendar on the phone only.
Go into the calendar and tap the "Calendars" button in the upper left. You will see lists of all the calendars. On my iPhone are those that live exclusively on the phone. You will also see From My Mac (or something similar) as well as any that are synced with Exchange accounts, iCloud, etc.
Now go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Scroll down to Calendars and make sure the Default Calendar is set to the correct calendar.  I don't believe there is any easy way to move all your entries from the local calendar to the one that syncs with iCal, but you can go into each entry and specify which calendar it belongs to.

  • How to fix continued crashes and hangs of iPhone, iTunes and iPhoto.

    PROBLEM
I started to suffer these immediate problems when getting iPhone:
    1. When the iPhone is connected to the computer, iTunes would hang, and also iPhoto would hang.
    2. Both would need to be restarted from the opt-apple-esc key option.
    3. When iTunes was re-started, it would not "see" the iPhone, or even if it "saw" the iPhone, it would refuse to sync. This refusal was either from (a) an error reporting a connection error, or (b) the process of synch would hang.
    4. iPhoto about 1/2 of the time would not properly import photos.
    DIAGNOSIS
After trial and error, I came to the following conclusions:
a/ Part of the problem involved the USB connector on my laptop. It was not connecting 100%, so by jiggling it and making sure it was clean, the connection errors started to decrease some, (but did not go away).
b/ By pulling up the Process Monitor, I noticed that the CPU was becoming overloaded each time the iTunes and iPhoto applications crashed. (I have an older machine, a PowerBook g4 17" with 1GHz CPU, 2 GB RAM.
    HOW TO FIX PROBLEM
    The following worked for me:
1/ For iPhoto, change the settings so that it does NOT automatically launch when the iPhone is plugged in. This is done with iPhoto>Preferences>General: "Connection Camera Opens" > No Application. You can still use iPhoto with your iPhone, but it will not automatically launch when the iPhone is plugged in. This will stop the hanging. [at least it did for me]
2/ For iTunes, disable the option to "sync when plugged in" iTunes>Preferences>Syncing> check the box "disable automatic syncing".
The effect of these actions is to disable the complex chain of events that occurs when the iPhone is plugged in. I believe my CPU just can not handle them. So once they are disabled, there is no problem doing this manually. iPhoto does not launch, even if you have not photographs to upload, and iTunes does not try to launch and sync all in one giant transaction. You simply click the "sync" button when you wish to sync.
My suggestion is that if you have an older mac, check to see if the CPU is getting overwhelmed. If it is, then these setting might help you. For me, after they were put in place, I've not had quite as many problems. About 1/2 the time, iTunes will not sync, but this is easily fixed by simply quitting and restarting iTunes. That seems to work most of the time.

    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Stop iTunes and iPhoto from launching?

Currently when I put my iPhone into the dock, iTunes and iPhoto both launch automatically.
How do I make it so that when I dock the iPhone, no applications autostart?

  • STOP iTunes and iPhoto from stealing focus...

I was curious if there is anyway to stop iTunes and iPhoto from stealing focus when I plug in my iPhone. I do not have pictures to sync, yet iPhoto still popos up. Not only that, when it finishes loading, it steals focus, so if I am working on something else, now all my mouse commands and keyboard stokes are all in iTunes.
    - Is there anyway to stop iTunes from stealing focus? To just have it pop-up in the background and bounce for all I care, just not steal focus.
    Thanks!

I already have iTunes configured so it doesn't open up when I plug my iPod touch in. What I don't like is when it steals focus after it's done syncing. Programs on Windows are supposed to "play nice" and not steal focus. They can request focus and flash the taskbar button, but that's it. So, if anyone knows how to prevent iTunes on Windows from stealing focus, I'd really appreciate it.

  • I would like to connect an external hard drive to my time machine and use it as a network drive to store itunes and iPhoto  how do i do this

I have just purchased a new my book hard drive and would like to connect it to my time capsule and store my itunes and iphoto contentent there to free up space on my internal hard drive . Can this be done and what is the process?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.
