Sync/Library Question
The computer that I normally sync my iPhone 4 with is broken. Anytime I try to sync it with another computer, it says I can only sync with one library unless I restore it. If I back up my phone, then restore it, will I be able to use the backup to restore my phone to normal but be allowed to sync to a new computer/library? Just wanted to make sure before I wiped my phone clean.
The music/apps/etc will only be where you put them. You only get one download. You have to move/copy the songs where you want them. If the songs are not on the computer, then you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases
Just use your backup copy of your old computer to put everything on the new computer, then sync.
The texts should be saved if you perform a backup. If you sync to another computer and that computer has no contacts, then the contacts from the iphone will be erased. If the computer has a different contact than is on the iphone, then you will get the option to merge the data. The same is true of calendars.

With 7.0.2 can't sync library with iPod
Upgraded to 7.0.2 and during installation got a message that a corrupted Ipod had been detected. Can't figure that--all was well until upgrade. I can transfer to my library but I can't sync library to my iPod (it's all white). I've reinstalled 7.2 and restored several times but no luck. The restoration transfers new stuff but I can't do it by click & drag. Seems 7.2 is causing problems for many....any help?
Dell Dimension 5150 Windows XP
Dell Dimension 5150 Windows XPI figured it out. If you've been on manual management on the previous version, when you download 7.2 you have to reactivate your manual management on the options list or your Ipod does not connect with iTunes. As simple as that.

i originally synced my ipad to itunes on my computer before I found out about home sharing. Since I set up home sharing, can I remove the synced library? It seems to be taking up space and I'd like to free it up.
I don't think I have made myself clear... I have recently upgraded my iPhone 4 to a 5 so everything was set up to sync with no problems at all. I transferred everything across to my new device by iCloud and everything appears as it was on my old device including on the face of it my music library. However, I cannot play all of the songs in fact the majority! When at home I can access the entire library via home sharing but that is no use away from the house. I never had this problem with iPhone 4 and although I am automatically syncing the device to iTunes it is not working. If I try to play songs via the device it skips until it finds a song that cAn be played and if I try and play the device via the laptop/iTunes an ! Type signal appears and I cannot play the song!
Any ideas re solutions would be appreciated??? -
I've got about 2500 songs on my iphone, i have recently replaced my computer because the old one crashed, so i lost all the songs in the itunes library. My question is, it seems that now i am unable to drag/drop new downloaded songs without syncing my iphone & losing my 2500 songs from the phone?
You cannot. Iphone will sync/manually manage music with one and only one computer at a time. Syncing/manually managing with another will erase the current content from the iphone.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer. Use your backup copy to put everything back. -
1 song file missing from my library. Sync & recovery questions.
I found 1 song missing from my iTunes library. File recovery software doesn't find it. It's still on the iPod.
If I do a sync, will I loose it from the iPod too? It's still present in my iTunes song list, but shows up as not found.
After I've done a sync IIRC I can put the iPod into hard-drive mode. Will that let me copy the song to my PC?
Since it's only for a $.99 song, I'd gladly use a free 3rd party application, but only want to buy software for this sort of thing if I have a bigger need.I've never had the need to do it myself but, from what I've heard, the aggravation is worth more than 99 cents. However,

So I can find hundreds of articles telling me that if you iCloud storage is full, your photos won't sync anymore. But if you have thousands of photos, what will happen in my phone is eventually full?
I mean, I have my "optimize iPhone storage" option turned on, but there will be a maximum right? Or are the optimized versions really that small of size?
Thank you in advance for answering my question.
RafaelYeah - I'm not seeing anywhere that it states if there is a maximum of "optimized" photos you can keep on your device. I'm guessing that "optimized" photos must be much like iTunes in the Cloud where you can see all of your music (including what is stored in the cloud), but only the music you have actually downloaded will be on your physical device. So only the "original photos" that the management system have left on your device, or that you have specifically downloaded are actually on your device.
Sorry I'm not 100% on that. I'll see if any of our Photo experts know for certain!
But to answer your question about:
"nowhere it's stated that your oldest/never viewed pictures will be removed from your device" I think this covers that particular question:
How does iCloud Photo Library save space on my device?
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your iOS device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. iCloud Photo Library stores the original, high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and can keep lightweight, device-optimized versions on each of your devices. As long as you have enough storage, recent photos and videos that you access the most will stay on your device at full resolution.
To turn on Optimize [device] Storage on your device, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select Optimize [device] Storage. You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.
So, if original photos are the ones that are actually on your device, then it will remove older and least viewed original photos to maximize storage when needed.
This is supported by the paragraph about turning off iCloud Photo Library:
You can turn off iCloud Photo Library for a single iOS device by going to Settings > iCloud > Photos and turning off iCloud Photo Library beta. If you turned on Optimize [device] Storage, you might not be storing all original photos and videos on that device. To download the original photos and videos, select Download and Keep Originals.
If it is off, you do not have access to those photos that are "optimized", so that supports the idea that they actually live in the cloud.

HT4236 Many Storage & Syncing Photos Questions for a Genius
I am using Windows Live Photo gallery to import pictures taken on my iphone to the My Pictures folder on Windows 7 and choose the option to delete these images from the device during transfer.
At the same time, I have iTunes configured to automatically synchronize the My Pictures folder onto the iPhone.
I'm a bit confused and concerned if I'm messing this up both by opting to "delete images from device" during photo import and at the same time "synchronize".
Is it smart enough to know what photos are new and have never been transferred vs. photos that are sourced from the PC and synced?
Can someone please comment on this?
When syncing photos to the iPhone, is there downscaling of the image happening so that it is lower resolution on the iPhone than the source image on the PC?
Further, what happens when you exceed the storage capacity on your iOS from syncing so many photos?
I'm not there yet, but will be soon. Will it start to drop the "oldest" pictures first?
Where is the option to specify a threshold for how much storage on the iOS device should be dedicated to photos vs. music? I don't want all these pictures eating into space I could use for music.
So many questions!Well for the first part of your question "Itunes says 6.96 GB ipod says Used: 7.26GB" thats where you have a playlist or something selected in iTUnes.
If you have a playlist highlighted in iTUnes, it shows the size of everything in the playlist, not the main library. Then when you connect the ipod, the ipod part shows the total size used on the ipod, in other words the whole size of the library.
FOr the fragment part of your question, NO do not fragment it with windows. It doesn't matter how fragmented the harddrive on the ipod is because its accessing only music. You use the ipod updater to restore an ipod, which basicly formats and defrags a ipod http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/ -
Part-backup, full Library question
I'm about to get a 32GB flash drive (it's on offer) and will use it to backup some iTunes data. This includes a big project about 17GB in size, with lots of nested playlists and important tagged data. This will easily fit on the drive, along with my Favourites playlist. However, there isn't room for my entire iTunes folder which is over 38GB.
The question is, how to achieve this without losing any of the important stuff like playlists, tags, ratings, etc? I can, for example, drag the relevant playlists to the flash drive from within iTunes. I could also drag the iTunes Library files there too. But those will refer to the whole iTunes Library, not just the 66% - 75% of it I'm backing up.
What would happen if I ever tried to recreate iTunes on a different machine, from the iTunes Library file on the flash drive? The Library file and the music won't be in sync with each other.
I already have a full backup of iTunes on an external HDD, but this is 'important belt and braces' stuff - I want to know that my most important music and playlists and data are preserved should the worst ever happen and I need to use what's on the flash drive.I don't think you can do exactly what you want to do -- not easily.
The following is just theoretical, but it might work (I would back up first to make sure!):
You could try selectively consolidating some items to an iTunes folder on the flash drive. Consolidating, I believe, just copies files, not move them (or my references are out of date). Then once there is a partial duplicate of the library on the flash drive you could copy the library files and artwork, etc. to the drive so you reconstruct everything a normal iTunes folder would need to start with a partial version of your current library. Of course there would be many broken links but you could use one of Dougscripts to remove dead links for the files you hadn't copied.
I have never consolidated but I think you change the media location preference in your iTunes preferences. Then do not let it organize things when you close preferences -- you don't want to have it do it automatically for everything. Select items to be copied in iTunes, then there will be a consolidate command you can use to consolidate selected items. Go back and return your iTunes preferences to normal. -
HT204053 iTunes Library question
Organizing my iTunes Library I somehow deleted my 1500+ songs, it's empty! They're still on my iPhone though.
So my question is:
How do I transfer my music FROM my iPhone TO my MacBook Pro so I can restore my Library the way it was? Only 10% of these songs was purchased on the iTunes store so I already transfer those but... that didn't help too much.
I thought my music would be in the cloud but I don't even know where to find it. Not sure if it's because my iTunes Apple ID is different from my iCloud Apple ID which HAS to be a @me.com account in order to sync emails, etc.
Thanks in advance! You can't just delete tunes like that, they would at least go into the trash, however if you have since emptied the trash, you will need to restore from your computer backup.

Two iPhones, one MacBook - sync/backup question
Hi all, I've read through many posts, tech articles etc and still have this question...
My wife and I both got 3G(S)s about eight months ago. She backed up/synced her phone to her PC only once since then. We would like to be able to back up her phone to my MacBook now instead of her dying PC, and also load my HUGE legit iTunes library from our CD collection onto her phone. Also, she is not interested in having my contacts, bookmarks and whatnot synced to her phone.
My question is, will it be possible to use one computer/iTunes to share the same iTunes music library, while saving her contacts, calendars etc separately? Stated otherwise, will iTunes back up two separate iPhones and allow the syncing of a common music library?
Thanks and have a great day! MMMIn regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer only and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first.
There is no device limit for the number of iPods, iPads, and iPhones that can be synced with the same iTunes library and iTunes account on the same computer. Each device can have its own sync preferences with iTunes and iTunes creates and maintains a backup for each device.
When syncing two iPhones with the Address Book and iCal under the same computer login account, the contacts and calendar events will be the same in the Address Book and iCal and on both devices. There is an option to sync select Address Book Groups and select calendars only with each iPhone, but the contacts and calendar events with both devices will be available in the Address Book and iCal.
If you want to keep contacts and calendar events completely separate, you need to create a computer login account for your wife. You can enable Fast User Switching to make the process of switching between multiple computer login accounts a fast and easy process. An iTunes library can be shared between multiple computer login accounts. Your iPhone's backup will be updated and stored under your computer login account, and your wife's iPhone backup will be update and stored under her computer login account. -
Syncing library in manual mode
Hi folks,
well, I have a little question that schould actually be very easy to answer by a small attempt of trial-and-error, but unfortunately, I'm not able to try things out myself at the moment, so I thought I'd ask my question here. Probably someone can give me a quick answer on this one.
So, here I go: Imagine you have your iPod set so it doesn't automatically sync with your iTunes library and playlist, but so that you have to update and remove songs on it yourself. Now, in this configuration, you mount your still empty iPod. When it appears in iTunes, you simply "grab" your Library in the sources pane and drop it onto your iPod symbol. As a result, all the songs in your Library will now be copied to your iPod. So far, so good!
Now imagine you add a song to your iTunes Library. When you repeat the thing above - dragging and dropping your iTunes Library onto the iPod - the newly added song will be copied over to your iPod. Again, very fine!
Now comes the thing I'm not sure about: Imagine you delete a song from your iTunes Library and then, just as we've done above, you drag and drop your iTunes Library onto the iPod. What will happen? Will the above drag and drop action actually result in the iPod and iTunes Library being syncronized and thus the song you deleted from the iTunes Library also being deleted from the iPod? Or will the song you've deleted from the iTunes Library remain on the iPod?
I know that the above scenario (syncing the whole library) can better be done by using one of the two automatic syncing options in the iTunes->iPod-Preferences. Still, I'm curious what result the above mentioned procedure would produce. So, anyone out there who happens to know it or who is able to quickly try it out?
Greetings,
Nils

Sync library and podcast clarification
I had to erase my computer fully after it got a problem from an Apple update but my old iTunes library - whilst deleted on the computer - has remained on my iPod.
I thought it wasn't working for a while so have been using my new iTunes loading on some CDs (though not everything i own as on the iPod) and purchasing music. However, I now find the iPod has resurrected itself apparently so I'd like to start using again all together.
I have transferred the purchased music onto iTunes and that's great.
However just have a couple of questions and confirmations for syncing the two:
1. By agreeing to sync it says that the iPod memory will be replaced with that from iTunes. Does that mean that the library filed on my iPod will combine with the iTunes library or does it mean that the iPod will be wiped and I will have my more minimal CD library (although all my purchased tunes)?
2. What happens to the podcasts from my iPod? Is there a way to ensure they are transferred into my iTunes library - or are they non transferrable (which seems to be the case)
Thanks for any advice."1. By agreeing to sync it says that the iPod memory will be replaced with that from iTunes. Does that mean that the library filed on my iPod will combine with the iTunes library or does it mean that the iPod will be wiped and I will have my more minimal CD library (although all my purchased tunes)?"
Choosing Erase and Sync will wipe everything off the iPod and replace it with what you currently have in your iTunes library, it won't amalgamate the two sources. Whatever you have on the iPod that isn't in iTunes will be erased.
While the the transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod, there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod -
HT1491 Sync Library into iPhone...
I know this should be a simple question but I'm trying to download some songs from our library into my daughter's relatively new iphone. I've connected cord to phone and computer, logged in on her apple id, saw a sync going through but cannot find songs in her music app on her iphone. Any suggestions please?
You need to look in iTunes when the phone is connected, at the "Music tab". Is it checked off to sync the music? If it is not checked, then the music will not sync.

Sync ~/Library through the cloud?
As I was reinstalling my MacBook Air from scratch (too many migration assisted installs left me finding software still running that i thought i had removed 5 years ago!), I realised I was downloading almost everything from 'the cloud' and wondered how close we had gotten to being able to have 2 machines that are completely in sync.
I currently carry a MacBook Air to and from the office every day. Not complaining about the weight, but not needing to bring it means I can ditch my bag altogether and achieve the long-desired bag-less commute! For me to not need to bring the computer to and from work every day, I'd need to have the same installs on both machines, and I'd want them to be as similar to each other as possible.
That's why.
So ... thinking that through, a lot of data syncs through their existing servers such as iCloud, email, Evernote, etc. and me already syncing most of my home directory through the cloud, I figured all there was left would be a review of the ~/Library folder to see what would require syncing to get two very similar if not exact machines on both ends.
