Sync local media library with iTunes Match after format

iTunes Match is a wonderful service but there's one thing that's really making me hate it.
I'm the type of person that uses multiple computers and that probably formats more than he should.
So here's my issue.
Pre-format
1) I match my 12,000 songs library with iTunes Match
2) Once done my songs are in sync with the cloud meaning that the content I play is local and it updates through the cloud at the same time
Post-format
1) I reinstall iTunes 11
2) I change iTunes advanced preferences to point to my original and untouched media path and I check both options underneath.
3) I sign into my account and turn iTunes Match ON
4) iTunes Match does its thing
Now here's my gripe. Every single song has the download from cloud button. Every song I play streams from the cloud even though I pointed my library to my original media path. Why won't iTunes sync the cloud with my local files just like it was before the format ?
Re-adding the whole media folder to my new (not backed-up) library will only create a 12,000 duplicate songs in the cloud to make matters worse.
So my question is : is there any way to preserve what I had prior to formating ? Having to wipe my cloud content and rematch my local files after every single format is non-sense.
Thanks in advance

When restoring the library (itl) files, do I need to re-add the folder to my library ? Or will the songs automatically appear based on the library settings in those files ?
No, you will not need to add anything if you drop, at minimum, the iTunes Library.itl file into the User/Music/iTunes folder. Ideally you would restore all the library files, though. As long as the path isn't different, say you created a User Account with a different name from the original, it should be fine.

I noticed that by holding the shift key when launching iTunes it prompts you to select a library or creating a new one. Which makes me wonder if I can just point it to my different drive at all times instead of always having to copy files back and forth between /music/itunes and a backup location.
Yes, you can run the iTunes library off an external HDD, no problem. However, I believe the best way to do that is to set the path in iTunes Prefs. Also, keep in mind that if the external is not connected iTunes will not be able to find the files and it will not defaul to streaming the music from the cloud. And you should still have a backup scheme in place.

  • HT204406 Hard Drive wiped out - Can I rebuild the library with iTunes Match?

My hard drive and external back of my entire music library (15,000+ songs) were completely deleted. I would like to recover this in some way other than loading each single CD one at a time again. I have iTunes Match so I was wondering if there is someway for me to rebuild my library via download from the cloud or something so that I can maintain a new physical copy of the files on my computer again? Or will I have to do this from my iPod?

    Hello Mclary101,
Thanks for your question! Im sorry to hear about your computer but it sounds like you had iTunes Match turned on before this happened. You should be able to use this article to get your music in iTunes Match re downloaded:
iTunes: How to add a computer or iOS device to iTunes Match
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4913
To add a computer to iTunes Match
Open the latest version of iTunes on the computer you intend to add. You can download the latest version of iTunes here.
Sign in with the Apple ID you use with iTunes Match.
Choose Store > Turn On iTunes Match.
Click the Add This Computer button.
When prompted, enter your Apple ID password.
iTunes will automatically begin scanning your computer's library for matches.
A status indicator will allow you to track progress. You may also manually pause and resume the process at any time by clicking the Stop or Start button.
Once iTunes has completed matching and uploading your iTunes library, your music in iCloud will be integrated into your local music library. A download button will appear to the right of any content that you have in iCloud that doesn't already exist on your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Can I sync contacts and calendars with iTunes Match enabled?

I’m getting an iPhone in a couple of weeks and really want iTunes match but the more I read about it the more I’m wondering whether it’ll be worth the hassle. I’ve loads of old CD rips at 128 kbps and protected iTunes files, also at 128 kbps, and what really attracts me is the idea of upgrading all these to unprotected 256 kbps.
I have a Macbook for personal use and a PC for work, being able to sync both computers to the phone will be essential for me. I know that I wouldn’t be able to sync music with iTunes match enabled but if I can sync contacts and calendars and drag Office documents to the phone from both computers that would be OK.
Please could someone tell me whether this would be possible?

I think I understand now, it's nothing to do with syncing music - everything is synced through iTunes. Have I understood properly?
    Yes. Including music.

This could be a major blow for me as I'll be using the iPhone mainly for work so I will have to Sync with the PC. If I understand this correctly, once I decide to sync with Outlook on the PC as the main priority I can no longer sync with the Macbook?
What if I ditch iCloud and sync everything through USB?
If it is possible for you to do so you might want to consider signing up for an iCloud account <http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/pc.html>. Keep in mind that iCloud and iTunes Match are seperate services. One does not require the other. However iCloud will work with Outlook 2007 and up so you can keep all your contacts in sync across the devices. You can also sign up for iTunes Match if you want. Or you might even consider using Google to do what you want. It is not necessary for you to keep syncing via USB, unless that is just what you are comfortable doing.

  • Advice on managing library with iTunes Match

    Hi All
I am running out of hard drive space on my mac for my music and need advice on how to manage my vast libary of music.
I have itunes match + timecapsule but can't put trust in a cloud backup + don't know how have a media backup on my timecapsule
Should I just think to delete my hardrive media and put trust in a itunes match?
Any help on best practice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Should I just think to delete my hardrive media and put trust in a itunes match?
    Adam,
Absolutely not.  You must always keep a backup on physical media.
Here is a user tip by Michael Allbritton with more explanation:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4112
And here is the official legal notice from Apple:
"iTunes Match is provided on an “AS IS” basis and may contain errors or inaccuracies that could cause failures, corruption or loss of data and/or information, including music, playlist, and play history, from your computer or device and from peripherals (including, without limitation, servers and other computers) connected thereto. You should back up all data and information on your computer or device and any peripherals prior to using iTunes Match. • Can't update iTunes Match after upgrading to 11.1.5

    Hi,
Is anyone else (in Australia) having problems with iTunes Match after upgrading to iTunes 11.1.5 on Mac? I’ve found that whenever I play a track (i.e. update the play count), set a rating or edit a playlist, all my cloud songs become greyed out, the updates are not synced to the cloud (don’t appear on other devices), the iTunes Cloud music icon gets a lightning bolt through it (lost connect), and then my changes are lost. I can reconnect as many times as I like (by clicking on the cloud icon or restarting iTunes) and for a while everything ‘looks’ fine (can download and play songs) but actually nothing is saved to the cloud and the lightning bolt appears again when I make any of the above updates. I have another computer that still has 11.1.4 and iTunes Match is working fine on it.
    James

Thanks Michael, I’d already tried both those (including applying the latest OS X security update and restarting). I kept trying to use iTunes Match every hour, and eventually it started working on my 11.1.5 computer and has staying working for the rest of the day. 11.1.4 was working the whole time.

  • Optimum set-up with external library and iTunes Match

I'm a little frustrated with iTunes Match and iTunes, as it doesn't seem to play nice with libraries stored on an external disk on a network. Here's my current set-up, and any tips on how to eliminate some of the steps I have to take would be much appreciated.
    Set-up:
One iTunes Media folder stored on external network drive at home
Another iTunes Media folder, titled "Away from Home", stored on Macbook
iTunes Match is turned on and has all songs (that qualify) uploaded onto it
Own multiple devices that access iTunes Match
If I leave my network and want to use iTunes Match, I have to:
    1. Turn off iTunes.
    2. Option-click iTunes and hold option to select a library.
    3. Choose my "Away from Home" library (or create a new one for those who haven't done this already)
    4. Sign in to iTunes, Turn on iTunes Match and add my computer/library to iTunes Match
    5. iTunes Match does it's thing which obviously means it adds 0 songs due to having an empty library, then all my iTunes Match songs populate my library
That is all fine and great. However, when I return home and want to listen to ALL songs, meaning those that didn't qualify and the unedited versions (since iTunes Match STILL pushes clean versions of songs), I must take these steps:
    1. Turn off iTunes.
    2. Option-click itunes and hold option to select my library on external network drive
    3. iTunes loads up, but only loads ~16,000 of 19,000 songs
    4. Turn iTunes off again.
    5. Open Finder, hold option when I click Go in menu bar, go to Library<Preferences and delete the com.apple.iTunes.plist file.
    6. Open iTunes again, this time not holding option
    7. iTunes opens as if it's been updated or newly installed (meaning it asks if I agree to the T&SA).
    8. All songs now found and appear
This is downright stupid. I shouldn't have to take all of these steps to do each of these. It may not sound like it takes a long time, but when you come home and want to turn on music while cleaning, entertaining friends, etc., taking these steps is a hassle and makes iTunes become a chore to run. Is there not a way to simply access my songs in the Cloud without closing iTunes and having to choose a different library? Or are these really the only steps I can take to access music from home and, subsequently, when I get back home?

  • How do I sync iTunes playlists on my iPhone with iTunes Match?

My experience with iTunes Match so far has been mixed.  On one hand, the face of iTunes on one computer to the next is virtually identical, and the streming over the wi-fi from the laptop at work to my home computer is perfect.  At the same time, iTunes Match on my iPhone seems terrible.  Playlists don't sync and are deleted from my iPhone.  Songs that are already on my phone, for some reason, still make my phone spin and drain my battery life.  Even after disabling the "allow cellular data over 3G" message, or whatever it is, is turned off, still the phone keeps spinning and draining battery life.  So, in one sense, iTunes Match is nice because I can access my music from multiple computers, but in another, the mobile connection - which should be awesome and seemless - is terrible.  Is there a way, aside from turning iTunes Match off, syncing manually to iTunes, and loading my playlists like the old way (which isn't a perfect science now, either)...Basically, how can I sync my playlists from iTunes on my computer to iTunes on my iPhone using iTunes Match?

With iTunes Match enabled on an iOS device direct syncing with iTunes via USB or Wi Fi is disabled. To sync in the traditional way iTM must be disabled on the iOS device. At this time is it either/or.

  • Ipod nano 6th gen. not syncing with itunes match

After the new itunes 11 release I cannot sync my Ipod nano 6th generation with Itunes match without downloading all the songs I want to copy to my ipod to the computer first.
It is a little compersome to download 8Gb to my mac just for syncing and after sync delete them from my computer so that I just stream it again (airbook simply does not have enough space)

iTunes 11 won't even recognize my 1st and 3rd gen nanos. They've just rendered all the devices I love useless.
You can send feedback on the upgrade here:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html. I'm hoping enough legacy iPod users will speak up that they'll rethink and/or fix it.

  • HT4914 If I do not resubscribe after the first year with itunes match will any songs that have been upgraded in quality lose this upgrade or will it remain?

If I do not resubscribe after the first year with itunes match will any songs that have been upgraded in quality lose this upgrade or will it remain?

    Dottie,
If you want to upgrade the quality of a song in your library, you have to delete the library copy and download the matched copy.
Once it is downloaded, it will stay in your library even you don't renew Match.

  • I can't sync iPod classic with iTunes Match since I have updated to iTunes 11

When I open iTunes (11) and connect my iPod (classic) it does not recognise the device.  I am using iTunes Match.   My question is how do I transfer the music from PC to my iPod?  I just bought a new PC and thought getting Match would be useful and save time transferring from my old PC.  It was fine to begin with until the iTunes 11 update.
    Any help would be appreciated!

The iPod classic not bring recognized is unrelated to iTunes Match. You should post this problem to either the iPod Classic forum https://discussions.apple.com/community/ipod/ipod_classic or the iTunes for Windows forum https://discussions.apple.com/community/itunes/itunes_for_windows. Probably the former.
FYI it is only iOS devices that cannot be synced via USB with iTunes Match enabled.

  • Song syncing difficulties on new iPod touch with iTunes match

I've got all my songs backed up on iCloud with iTunes match. I've been able to download most of the songs I've wanted from iCloud to my iPod touch but there a few songs that won't sync and I can't play on my iPod. I've tried to load them on the iPod manually with no success. Suggestions?

Couple of things come to mind. When you've got the list selected in iTunes, do you have Name selected on the top bar so they sort by Name? Try selecting the ^ to the left of name.
If it's a smart list, see [Smart Playlist not syncing as expected|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3044]
    Hope that fixes it.

  • With iTunes Match, does each library you enable on the same computer count as separate device?

I have four iTunes libraries on my Mac, my main iTunes library, one for Christmas, one for Christian, and one for CDs. Additionally, my husband and daughter each have their own computers with a single library on each.  Since we are only allowed 10 devices with iTunes Match (per Apple ID), including computers, I need to know if each of my four libraries on my Mac will count as a separate device if I enable each of them for Match. If so, this would cause us to exceed the maximum number of devices needed for all of us.
Also, if I use Match for all four of my libraries, is there any way to maintain my separate libraries without having everything from all of them end up intermingled with each other? If not, I suppose I may as well consolidate my other three libraries with my main library.

All the libraries you add to Match are merged together, so you may as well consolidate them.
In that case I assume that the first question becomes irrelevant, but I will try to answer it anyway. Whilst you are allowed 10 devices, only 5 of them can be computers. However, it does state "devices" rather than libraries, so I think that each computer would only count as one even if you have more than one library.
I haven't got multiple libraries on the same computer though, so my assumption may be wrong. If so I'm sure someone will correct me.
