Sync macbook pro data only to external drive
How can I sync the data (not only music and movies in iTunes but also documents from Pages, Keynote, Numbers, pdf, photos and etc) to an external USB drive? I only want to sync those data and not backup the whole system. If I delete the data on my macbook, it should also delete from the external drive. Is there any software? Something like DropBox concept. I tried the Time Machine but it seems that it can only do whole system backup.

I just picked up a nice USB3 250GB pocket drive that is affordable $160.
You can install your programs and use the external device, and it is light and small and gets around 90MB/sec which should be fine using it for programs and data. you could have NTFS and use some of it as HFS+

Title pretty much sums it up. I've had an external firewire 800 drive (Iomega eGo) for about 2 years now. I've got it partitioned and am using part as a time machine backup and the rest as a data storage/ data moving partition. A few days ago I realized that any data I put on either partition can't be copied off by either my computer or either of my two friend's MacBook Pros. The copy starts fine, but then always screeches to a halt around 5% (this is via firewire). This same drive also cannot be recognized via USB by any of our Macs (I plug it in, light comes on, but doesn't blink), but if I plug it into my Windows Desktop the USB recognition is immediate. I found this very strange. I could also copy files off of the drive via USB onto my desktop. If I let it sit long enough on a failed copy on our macbooks eventually it gives me an error code 36. I traced that to a likely hard drive failure on the part of the external. I found this odd because not even 3 days ago I was pulling iTunes songs off the drive onto my desktop with no trouble. Is there any way to fix this via software or the terminal or anything? Disk Utility says both partitions are 'OK'. I'd really like to not spend another chunk of change on an external, as I just spent $180 on a new HDD and SSD for my desktop.

I just bought a 27" iMac with an intel core i5 processor. Most programs and files have tranferred successfully. The dimensions of the MPEG-4 movie files have been horizontally distorted. What can I do to correct this problem and prevent the dimension distortion from occurring in the future.

The HD will probably have to be removed from the MacBook Pro and connected to a USB adapter or placed in a dock to get your data off of it. I would take the MacBook Pro along, the folks at the Apple Store should be more than happy to help transfer your data to a new iMac.

MacBook Pro can´t locate external drives
Sudenly I got a warning telling me the disk (iPod Classic) wasn't ejected properly (which wasn't ejected at all), now non of my external drives (2 connected through a USB2 hub) are mounted on the desktop, neither from the hub nor directly through the machine's USB ports. The machine is brand new, this is its second day of ussage :'(

Is that I sold my macbook pro an the person who bought it needs it quickly so I have an external drive but it is not portable so I bought a portable external drive but it may take a while to arrive so I backed up my data with the external drive that I have in my house but I would like to know if I can restore my data to the new external drive without the macbook pro and just with the external drive of my house to the portable external drive.
Thank youNo, that's not possible. A computer is required in order to effect such a transfer. Connect both drives to your computer. You can use Disk Utility to clone one drive to the other. Be sure you first partition and format the new drive:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new external drive. Source means the old external drive. -

Yes. Find the LR catalog file by looking in Edit/Catalog Settings/General. Close LR and navigate to that spot. The catalog file is the one that ends in .lrcat - move it to wherever you want. Next to the .lrcat file is a subfolder called Previews.lrdata. You can move that over as well, but if you don't LR will generate new previews. Double-click on the .lrcat file in its new home and LR will open with that catalog. Set Preferences to When Starting Up Use Most Recent Catalog.

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?
Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

We could use a little more information, are you trying to move from a folder to an external drive? Or are you moving from IPhoto.
Either way should be able to select the pictures you want and drag them to your external.
If you have not used the drive before you may need to format the external drive with Disk Utility. You will need to choose a catalog method and what you choose should depend on if you plan to use a Mac only, or Mac and PC. -

hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed and restored. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files' After my new drive was installed I plugged in time machine and it started backing up. I paused it when I realised that it was running for more than a few minutes. I now realise that it probably started backing up the new hard drive all over again. Which makes me think that the original back up must be on the WD back I cant seem to access it. Any ideas would be helpful.

No, sorry. it won't work with the 2007 MBP. You can replace the optical drive yourself - just go shopping at OWC.

Transfer music from PC to Mac using data disks or external drive?
I have my iPhone synced with my office computer (a PC running XP Pro) and originally had my iPad synced with the same PC computer.
But now I synced my iPad with my Macbook pro at home.
Is there anyway to transfer the music and playlists via data disks (or external drive) from the office PC to the home Macbook?
If so, can you please tell me very slowly how to do that. What do I need to transfer and what is the file called, etc... I'm not very familiar with PCs (I'm more of a Mac person).

Hey, I know there are other posts on what enclosure you can use and if it's a possibility, but I haven't seen any that tell me how I get OS X on the SSD without a disc? Can I download the installer on a flash drive somehow? Also, I am wondering if this really is a good idea, using my Macbook Pro's HDD for a backup HDD, instead of buying one? I have no use for it anyway, if and when I get a new SSD. BTW, the HDD is the upgraded factory 500gb 7200rpm. Also, do you think it's smarter to have a bigger backup drive than internal drive? Put the SSD in the externel enclosure and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner, to clone the internal drive and all it content to the SSD. Then swap them out.
Always good to have more than one backup. -

Most external drives are formatted for Windows; you should be able to format it for Mac. Plug it in, open Disk utility, highlight the drive and choose the Partition tab. Do not worry about any software on the drive - you don't need it and it will be erased. In the partition tab, choose how many you want, name them, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and, under the Options button, choose GUID partition scheme. Hit Apply. The drive will be erased and formatted. If that process does not work, contact Seagate and inquire about the Mac compatibility.
