Sync MBP with external HD

Hi all,
I'm looking at a MBP. Since disk space is at a premium I plan to keep my music library on an external HD. When travelling though, I'd like to take a selection of music (a smart playlist) with me on the MBP.
Is it possible to sync a playlist to an MBP like I'd sync a playlist to my iPod?
Steve

Ya I understand what you would like to do, but I don't think it is possible. So while the external can be permanently the main computer's iTunes library drive, you can hook up the external temporarily to the MacBook Pro, tell iTunes to ADD which every folders or songs you want, they will be copied into the MBP and the external left unmodified, then put the external back on the main computer.
Unfortunately there really isn't another way that I can think of to do it.

  • Sync Problems with External HD, iTunes freezes

I sync all my music without any problems from teh computer's hard drive (HP Notebook ze4805, AMD Athlon 2800, 512KB, 60GB, XP).
The photo sync is directed to folder on a Seagate 300GB external hardrive which the computer regognizes and iTunes sees all its subfolders.
Once the music sync finishes and the photo sync is ready to start the iTunes simply freezes and do not respond anymore. It does not sync one single picture and the external HD is not accesed becuase the activity ligh does not blink at all. I am able to stream from that same external hard drive connected to my main home computer (HP, Intel, 2 GB, 200GB, XP) but I want to have all the photos for faster access on the Apple TV.
I tried synchronizing one folder at the time instead of the whole 20K pictures but same result.
Can anyone help me? I have spend many hours trying to figure this one out. Thanks

I have a 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini with 1GB of DDR2 RAM Memory. My HD is connected via USB 2.0 directly to my computer. It would be really great if you could tell me what might be the problem since my HD crashed again and this is the 3rd time in two months.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Is This Even Possible? eDirectory syncing passwords with external RADIUS servers.

We are currently have a solution that allows us to use a campus RADIUS
server as the authentication mechanism for accessing the Internet. We want
to integrate this so users can authenticate with their campus IDs but gain
access to the Novell server (home directory and printing) using the same
    information.
    Is this even possible?
So, essentially, we would like the external RADIUS' user/password data to
be synced with the eDirectory data, but have the eDirectory receive updates
from the RADIUS (or LDAP, Kerberos or whatever system is necessary). Or is
an all-Novell solution the only possible way to use RADIUS authentication?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    -=Bryan

    Hi Bryan,
As jim said, you can use idm to do this, but another option for you
might be to use somthing like freeradius and point it back to
    edirectory as its authentication source.
    Cheers,
    Steve

  • MBP with External Display Crashes Frequently - DRIVING ME NUTS!

I have 2.66 i7 MBP purchased a few months ago. I love it. As an upgrade from a G5 its nice to be mobile again. I've a SERIOUS issue however:
If i'm working with its single display, things are great but if I plug it into my External Cinima Display (older model from 6 years ago) and run dual screens, it crashes A LOT!
Both screens go completely black and nothing is responsive. I have to hold down the power button to do a hard reboot to get it to start back up. And It can be running for just a few minutes before it happens again. But then it may not happen for a few hours. Its completely random but sometimes it happens during certain actions, like opening a server connection with Transmit or Performing a screen capture with Quicktime.
I took it to a Genius and he ran some diagnostics. everything looked fine. He suggested doing and archive install (reinstalling the system over the existing one) but the problem persists.
I would hate to be out of a machine for a few days to get the graphics card or motherboard replaced but I fear thats where its going. Since it seems to happen only with the External monitor I wonder if its the MiniDisplay Adapter or the Display itself causing it. Is it possible the older display is causing the issue? It certainly shouldn't.
    Any feedback is appreciated.

The issue was resolved ages ago but I don't remember how....... sorry.

  • Sync photos with external drive

I'm just release the space of my Mac Book Pro storing the iPhoto Library to my time Capsule. Now when Sync iPad and iPhone with iTunes it erase all photos and not show any photo. When try to change the iPhoto Library and cloose the one into the Time Capsule, it is not grayout and cannot choose it. Any idea how to resolve it?

You can create a bootable clone using a second external HD. You will need to purchase either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. In each of those apps preferences you can set them to do updates to the clone at a pre-designated hour. For example I have mine update my clone every night at 2:30 AM. DO NOT repeat DO NOT create a bootable clone on the same EHD as your TM drive. It is wise to have redundant backups because EHD's fail and you don't want to lose all of your backup when this occurs.

  • Final Cut 7 audio sync issue with external audio

Ok, I've seached around a lot and still haven't found the solution for this common issue, which is sync between video and audio wich were recorded in two different devices.
My video is from a conference (a lady speaking all the time) ProRess 29.97 and my audio is wav recorded at 44.1 Khz. I have already converted my external audio to a fine AIFF 48 Khz, and I have already re-imported it with the correct 29.97 easy setup, as it shows on this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt-nfelM8KA. That helped a lot but audio still goes out on sync when playback goes further (not that much, but it shows).
On Premiere Pro, that wav file a correctly in sync, and I have had this issue before with FCP and now it has come back! help!
Anyone found a real solution for this issue?

Why not just use Premier? FCP is going to slowly die out anyways....
Anyhow, a work around... using the speed change tool (sss) adjust the audio to be the same length of the video so it is in sync... Press command-J, make note of the percentage you sped up your audio. Now open your audio in STP, select all of your audio go to Process>Timestretch and adjust the audio and apply the same percentage.
Listen to your audio. STP's time stretch is excellent because it adjusts the speed without changing the pitch.
    Save as, re-import your audio.

  • Syncing iPod with external hard drive

I've had my iPod synced with my iTunes on my PC for some time.  However, lack of space on my PC's hard drive meant that I had to move my iTunes music collection to an external hard drive, and I've since added music to that library.
My question is, how do I now sync my iPod with my music collection on my external hard drive?
    Thanx in advance.

It shouldnt matter where the music is.  I used to hav my library on external drive before getting new computer with bigger internal drive.  As long as external is connected before starting iTines and the files are in library as being stored on external it should work.
What may be issue is how you moved library to external.  Did you use iTunes to move library to external?

  • ITunes won't sync correctly with external hard drive

I have long kept my music on an external hard drive and had absolutely no problems with adding files to my iTunes library. Whenever I added songs to iTunes, they would automatically be copied over to my external device (a Seagate Freeagent 1TB USB External Hard Drive) everything would be fine. I could erase the song data remaining on my notebook without any problems.
But, after recently upgrading to Windows 7, I'm having some trouble keeping everything organized. I did a clean install so I had to reinstall iTunes, and upon doing so I specified for it to access my library from my external device like before. It does that just fine, but when I add songs to iTunes, they don't copy over to the hard drive, and when I consolidate the files, all of my songs get copied onto my notebook hard drive.
Is there a fix to this? Something I skipped when telling iTunes where to get/keep my music? I want to be able to add songs to the library and have them copy directly to my external device.

Hmmmm. By any chance, do you have 4 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset on the Fujitsu? If so, perhaps see the following Microsoft document:

  • MBP with external LCD TV in dual display mode

    I’ve got MacBook Pro 15" 2.O 2GBRAM with Mac OS X (10.4.10) .
I know there is a way to hook up my MBP to my LCD TV (Sony 32” that support PC input). I’d like to use it in dual mode with “Apple Logic Pro” so that mixer setting will be on LCD TV and arrangement window will be on MBP.
I know this is possible with desktop units that have dual monitors but I wasn’t sure if I could do it with MBP(???)
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks

It'll work exactly the same way as it does on a desktop.

  • HELP:  Sync Issues with External Hard Drive

Since I have moved all my music to an external hard drive I am having issues syncing. My Next Gen Ipod syncs, but never gets rid of the syncing notification. I have to disconnect it and restart it. Also, when it syncs it leaves two copies of the songs on my library, one copy has the explanation mark on it. Can anyone help me stop this?

I'd say bad power supply (if it has an external power supply).
Two external enclosures have done that to me already (but one is almost certain to do it while the other just started to do it recently), if the HD I have in the enclosure is a bit older (and noisier) I can even hear the HD spin down a little and spin up again, of course that whatever I was doing explodes in the process.
Mind you that the HD is confirmed to be working properly by connecting it inside a desktop pc.
I have couple other power adapters I can try. I got the same enclosure for my dad. I have a brick for a LaCie drive too. (I bought the lacie drive a year ago, but the power supply buzzed loudly. I put in a support request, but ended up returning the drive, and they sent me a new power after that)

  • Sync logic with external video

i want to run logic pro 8 during live shows with audio and synchronised video art. but i want to connect two macs and put the video data on the other one, so the first is totally dedicated to the audio. how do i link the two together so the video will run in sync?
    thx a lot!!!!

What kinds of Macs? If one of them is a desktop then you could run video out of a second monitor output, and thus do it all from one computer.
I don't know if any of the laptops have facility to run more than one monitor display, but if so then as above you could do it all with one computer.
That aside, and sticking with the two-computer setup, would you be running Logic on both computers? If not, whatever video app you're running on the second computer would have to be able to accept MIDI (either via a MIDI interface or perhaps via MIDI-over-ethernet) and read MIDI Time Code ("MTC"). In this situation you'd set Logic to the same frame rate as the video and enable Logic's MTC output.

  • MBP Retina low performance with external displays

    Hi everyone!
I have a very bad performance with my MBP 15´´ retina display when it comes to ad an external display. I have a FUL HD LG monitor that looks very bad when i connect the HDMI or the thunderbot port with the proper adapter (as bad as you can´t even read). I want to know if this may ba a hardware problem just with my computer or if it is a software problem, any ideas? does anyone have the same issue?
How can i update my NVIDIA card???
    Thanks a lot!

Topic seems to come up here often. Apple has a tendency to dismiss the issue.
Its a pretty well known problem that Mac font smoothing doesn't seem to work well on high resolution third party external displays, making text hard to read. In addition, I think the Mac HDMI resolution support is limited to 1080p, so you must use DP or DVI video interfaces to see full monitor resolution.
The OS default is no font smoothing on external displays (except perhaps the apple display). There is a terminal command that will enable font smoothing for any external monitor, but it often doesn't work well enough. I found that using the OS zoom feature magnifies text to the point to be easily readable. You can set zoom parameters in the accessibility systems preference panel.
For some reason, sometimes the Mac OS thinks some monitors are TVs and use YCbCr instead of RGB. You can open the color sync utility and brouse the settings to see what is being used. There are scripts available that can fix that but are more complicated to install than an app.
It seems that PCs are way ahead of Macs with external display implementation. Most folks having monitor problems with a Mac do not see the same issue with PCs or Unix/Linux OSs.
Oh as far as updating the video card, can't. The monitor  "drivers" are built into the OS. When a new display is connected, the OS finds the profile for it.

  • How to sync iPhone with MBP connected via ethernet to PowerBook where iTunes and iPhoto content resides

I just got the iPhone 5, but I am still using a PowerBook G4 machine that will not sync with my new iPhone.  I was wondering if I could
    1) create a new user for myself on my brother's MBP
    2) connect that MBP with my PowerBook via ethernet
    3) have iTunes and iPhoto on my new MBP user to be mapped to my PowerBook iTunes and iPhoto Library folders respectively
    4) sync the iPhone with my new user on my brother's MBP and acquire all of the content from the iTunes and iPhoto libraries that reside on my PowerBook
Will this work?  Does anyone recommend a different solution to get the content from my PowerBook G4 1.33 to my new iPhone 5

Now I have made a search and you are right. A problem which seemed unique to me is, in fact, very common. It is unbelievable that on one hand the Apple programmers can create great software, but on the other hand they act like retards when they forget about some basic functionality. I really can't believe that I will lose my purchases simply because at Apple nobody thought that people do install a fresh system from time to time. What a shame.
But what about consolidation of accounts? I am being asked to provide account ID which I don't even remember anymore. It seemed natural for me that I download some applications and simply go on with life, just as in about any other website on the internet. But suddenly Apple says that I will not be able to save or transfer my application because I need some funky ID. Hello Apple... My application is already on my phone so I should be able to copy it where I want without some ID. That's really odd.
Anyway, I will try to search the forum and solve my problems. I simply didn't even think in my wildest dreams that Apple software could be sometimes so ********.

  • External ITWorks Numpad won't work on MBP with Mavericks

    Hello,
I'd be really thankful if anyone knows the solution to this one:
I have a new MBP with Mavericks 10.9.2, for working in Sibelius (notation software) I always used an external
numeric pad, an I.T. Works model (KP-6910W) via USB.
It perfectly worked with my old MBP (OS 10.5.something) but isn't even recognised by my new computer.
Choices in "change keyboardtype" in the system preferences menu only contain full keyboards by either japanese, european or
    american standards, but no numpads...
    Thanks!
    Philipp

    Philipp,
I use KeyRemap4MacBook as a numeric keypad substitute. On a US English keyboard layout, pressing the fn key provides the following “built-in” numeric keypad equivalents:
    7890-   to   789/=
    uiop    to   456*
    jkl;    to   123-
    m,./    to   0,.+

Reinstall MacFuse with the one from http://www.tuxera.com/mac/macfuse-core-10.5-2.1.9.dmg. If that doesn't work, you can use Paragon NTFS for Mac 9.0 which has been designed to work with Lion.
