Sync old library to new
Hi. I have an iPod that I used with PC/iTunes for PC. I have a new Mac, set up iTunes, bought some music and realized my library didn't transfer. So I hooked up my iPod and had to open the old library. The problem is now I have two libraries and I'd like them to be one. How do I do this without losing my music??
Tinay,
Photos on the iPhone will only sync one direction. If you originally synced the photos from your old computer, they will not be able to sync back to your new computer. Any pictures that you have taken with the iPhone will be able to sync back to your new computer, however.
Here is an article that explains the different ways the iPhone syncs with your computer:

Hope this helps,

SYNCING OLD LIBRARY TO NEW ITUNES
recently had our computer guy clean up our laptop and im getting a popup that reads "you're ipod is synced with another itunes library. do you want to erase this ipos and sync with this itunes library. An ipos can only be synced with one itunes library at a time. erasing and syncing relpaces the contents of this ipos with the contents of this itunes library" My options are to erase and sync or cancel. Does that mean I am going to lose the songs i already have in there because the new itunes is empty? help!
You want to get everything off the iPod and back into your new iTunes library.

The above method would work with a standard external hard drive as well.

You cannot sync it with a library that no longer exists,
Transfer purchases then sync it with this new library. -
Itunes won't sync old Itunes onto new computer.
I just got a new computer and installed Itunes and signed in. My library had nothing there. I authorized the computer, and deauthorized my old computer. I plugged my ipod into my new computer, and it recognized it, but didn't update my empty library. I clicked on "On This Ipod" and all my music from my old library was there. I looked at the summary of syncing at the music section, and it will empty my ipod completely and put my empty library on my ipod, and I do not want that. My question is, how do I get my old library onto my new computer?
when I click my iphone, everything is blank.
Do you mean there's no text in the summary pages? -
Re: iPhoto deleting photos from old library and new library
Hello. I really hope someone can help me. I'm about to tear my hair out. I recently copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive because I'm seriously out of space on my 24"iMac (2008). I am a photographer and have a mess of an iPhoto library to clean up. It was a VERY large volume, and it ran overnight. It appears that everything transferred fine. I did the transfer exactly as instructed by many forums: Home > Pictures > iPhoto Library, drag and drop to WD My Book 1 TB EHD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then I opened iPhoto via the icon in the dock while holding down the Option/Alt key and chose the new location on the ext drive to point iPhoto to the new library. My problem is this: I went into the old library, which I renamed iPhoto Library - Old (after the fact, which I hope didn't cause the problem), and deleted an event that I didn't care about. To my surprise, it deleted the event in BOTH libraries. I have tried repeatedly to point iPhoto to the right library, both using the dock and going through applications. It is as though the 2 libraries are somehow inter-connected, and not separate. At times, I will open the old library through finder, but I can see it highlight the icon for the EHD and it opens that. I am at my wits end, as at any given point in time I don't know which library it has brought up. I am trialling Aperture, and am trying to move photos over to Aperture from iPhoto, but really need to free up space on my internal drive to be able to work with it. I'd eventually like to move the masters to the EHD, etc., but I'm still in the learning curve with all that (I'll be hitting that forum soon, I'm sure). My highest priority right now is to figure out how to separate the 2 iPhoto duplicate libraries so I can delete the photos from the desktop without affecting the photos on the External Hard Drive. I've tried everything I can think of and everything I found while scouring these forums. Here is the information I think you would need:
- 24" iMac Intel, Snow Leopard (10.6.8), iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5)
- 2 TB WD External hard drive running Time Machine, (so everything from the desktop is backed up).
- 1TB WD My Book that is formatted as I mentioned above, which I copied the iPhoto Library to.
- 1 soon-to-be-bald photographer.
Thanks very much in advance for any help anyone can give me. I really like my hair, and don't wish to lose it!
Gail
PS - Just a little background. I have been working on this whole space issue for more than a week now. This is the 3rd new external hard drive I've had this week due to "issues." Had a problem with all 3 but finally figured this one out, and it's now working fine. I am so far behind in some photo editing work because of the hard drive space issues, and I cannot seem to resolve them no matter how hard I try. Hence the frustration. Thanks again.THANK YOU LARRY!! I did not realize that once you switch libraries, it kept you in that library until you switch back using the option key. I thought that the iPhoto icon would take me to the new library, and going through finder to the old library name would take me to the old one. I was actually in the new library the whole time, and all of the images I deleted were deleted from there. I just switched back to the old library and all of the photos were still there. I also tried deleting from the old library, which is what I wanted to do, and then switching to the new library and it did not affect the photos there at all. So, this was indeed the answer.
Whew, what a relief. You're a life saver. I might actually be able to get some work done now.
Thanks again so much.

How to read old library with new instal
My old G4 finally died. I bought a new G5 iMac, set it up and used back up to reload all my old prferences. Now I check iphoto and it looks like these preferences were not backed up. My library lives on an external drive. These are the files in that folder; AlbumData.xml, Dir.data, iPhoto Selection (folder), iPhoto.db, iPhotoLock.data, Library.iPhoto, Thumb32.data, Thumb64.data, ThumbJPG.data. When I open iphoto it askes if I would like to create a new library of find an old one. When I direct it to my external drive it does not see any of these files as the ones to use to read this library. I have iphoto v 5.0.4. Does anyone know how I can get iphoto to see this old library? You can also email answers to [email protected] Thanks.
Hi KRA,
Take a look at the screenshots. When asked to choose the iPhoto Library, do you choose the iPhoto Library on the external. The iPhoto Library is the file you should choose.
When you launch iPhoto holding down the Option key this is the window you will get.
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library if that is what you want to do, or choose a library to open by clicking the "choose" button.
If you click the "create library" iPhoto will open with a brand new library for you to import images to. If you click "choose" then you will get this window.
Open library
Navigate to where the library is on your computer and then choose it.

Downloading my old library to new hard drive?
Hi guys, I'll say sorry in advance, I'm a new user and completely useless with a computer.
Here's my problem, My hard drive recently packed in on me, so I had to buy a new one. I'm currently downloading Itunes again and was wondering if there is any way to get my old library and purchased albums onto this new hard drive?
Any help or support would be greatly appreciated :)!You're going to have to find someone who can extract data from a broken hard drive. They'll more than likely have to take it apart and do whatever it is they do to get lost data off a hard drive. This type of procedure is not cheap, either.
A good place to start would be http://www.diskdoctors.com. For your average hard drive, data recovery is going to start at about $500 and can range all the way up to about $3,000. So, if your hard drive has crashed, you're looking at a hefty expense. -

Syncing problems from transfer of old library to new...
I would like itunes music from my old laptop to play on my new laptop.
They seem to be showing fine in my library but are not syncing onto my ipod Nano because 'they could not be found' (100+) and 'the audio format is not supported.' (17+) Any advice?
I have done this fine before so have no idea what the problem is. I have deleted the library and tried to start again but the same error messages occur.
Thank you!Yeh I copied the entire Itunes folder, it has these items inside:
Album Artwork
Itunes library Extras.itdb
Itunes Library genius.itdb
Itunes Library.itl
Itunes Media
itunes Music Library.xml
previous itunes libraries.
Just tried launching with option key held down, selected the Itunes file and again it hasn't loaded all the music into Itunes ? ? ? -

Sync old ipod to new macbook pro
how do i sync my old ipod and its library to my new macbook pro without losing music. I dont just want to transfer purchases but all my old songs. There doesnt seem to be an easy option to do this.
Correct, there is no Apple sanctioned option to get the music to your new computer from your iPod.
Instead, transfer your iTunes library from your former computer to your new computer. -
I would like to sync my new 7th gen ipod to my current 5th gen ipod. I do not want to sync it to my Library.
How do I do this?
Thx.For songs, Apps, and Photos, sync the iPod the same way you did as the old one. For all of your App data and other things that are included in the iTunes backup, simply restore the iPod from that backup. iTunes should ask you if you would like to do this at some point the first time you connect it to your iTunes library.
