Sync only checked songs is greyed-out

iPod shuffle on an iMac.  I have Manually Manage Music checked.  I am unable to check Sync Only Checked Songs because it is greyed-out.  Thus -- no surprise here --- after I sync, ALL of the songs on my iPod play, rather than only the checked songs.  How do I enable Sync Only Checked if it is greyed out?  Thank you.

I called Applecare and got the answer.

  • Won't keep "sync only checked songs" setting

I am trying to sync only the checked songs to my ipod. The problem is that when I change the setting to "sync only checked songs," it still syncs the unchecked ones. When I eject my ipod and then reconnect it, the "sync only checked songs" setting is off again. I've tried both hitting apply, and then syncing, and syncing multiple times. Very frustrated. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

It's been a while since this question was asked... maybe you figured it out?
I found a trick that seems to get iTunes to re-evaluate what needs to be removed from the iPod. You change the "sync checked songs/videos" option back-and-forth. See this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17344534#17344534

  • Sync only checked song and videos - not working

On my iTouch, the only way I can get music on it is manually or through a playlist. The "Sync only checked song and videos" will not work. Am I doing something wrong?

Under the 'Music' tab (when you connect the iPT, and under the 'Devices'), make sure that 'Sync all Music' is selected, not the 'Sync playlists' option.

  • I have an iPhone 5s and in my iTunes music library have the songs checked that I want downloaded onto my phone. Instead of doing this, it is syncing all songs whether they are checked or not even tho I have the "sync only checked songs" box checked.

I have an iPhone 5s and in my iTunes music library have the songs checked that I want downloaded onto my phone. Instead of doing this, it is syncing all songs whether they are checked or not even tho I have the "sync only checked songs" box checked. So basically it's syncing all of the songs when I just want the checked ones on. This is very frustrating.

When your device is connected, check the tabs at the top ("Summary" "Apps" "Music," etc. Under the Music one, check to see if "Sync Music>entire music library" is checked. If it is, that may be why all the songs are syncing.

  • Sync only checked songs isn't working

I recently bought a nano for my husband (I already have an iPod classic). Since our music is pretty similar, I decided to choose the "sync only checked songs" option.
I thought I followed the instructions appropriately. I plugged in the device and selected it. When the summary came up, under options, I selected "sync only checked songs and videos". Then it did the sync, but that's NOT what it did-- it synced EVERYTHING! Then when I exited iTunes and went back in, the option didn't "stick." Am I doing something wrong? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated because it's driving me crazy

*I selected "sync only checked songs and videos". Then it did the sync, but that's NOT what it did-- it synced EVERYTHING ...... then when I exited iTunes and went back in, the option didn't "stick."*
Did you click "Apply" down in the right hand corner of the Summary screen before syncing the iPod and/or before exiting iTunes?

  • What's the dif  "sync only checked songs and videos"&"manually manage music

Can someone please explain the difference between "sync only checked songs and videos" and "manually manage music and videos"
It probably makes sense to someone that uses many iTunes features but I just download podcasts and music.

Okay , I had "*Manually Managed*" checked in the summery and had restored the iPod to get rid of some videos that wouldn't go away. When I went to Music and checked *Sync Music* Selected Playlists, etc. it appears that the *Manually Manage* box in the Summery un-checked itself.
    Interesting,
So just to clarify ; When *Manually Managed* is checked you can only drag things into the device from your library (outside the device), using the Music tab within the device will negate this ?

  • My iPhone never had a problem syncing with my iTunes. I check all the songs I want and when I manually connect the phone to the computer via USB, i would select "sync only checked songs and videos". No music will sync now and I've tried everything?

Normally my phone would connect with my computer and replace all the songs on my phone with all the songs available in my library. Now it seems as if the songs on my phone are permanently there, and nothing from my iTunes library will sync. I tried syncing with another library on another computer and nothing would sync onto my iPhone from that one either. I feel like it's a problem with the phone, not the iTunes, but I'm not sure. Ive been trying things for the last 8 hours. Why won't my music sync to my phone??

    1. Open iTunes.
    2. Click the View option in the iTunes menu.
    3. Select the Show Sidebar option.
Connect your phone, select it in the Sidebar...the various tabs will now show as before.

  • How do I transfer my music from my laptop to my iPhone? I've already checked the sync only checked songs and videos box, the manually manage music and videos box. I only want to sync the songs I checked, but it transfers all the music.

I dont want to transfer all the music just the checked ones. My macbook transfers all the music from my library to my iphone. I dont get it. Please if you could help that would be terrific.

    Hi RaulRod,
Are you pressing the Sync button to transfer music after connecting your iPhone or do you have the option checked to 'Automatically Sync when the iPhone is connected?'
Have you tried manually dragging and dropping music from your library into your phone?

  • I deleted all songs from the iPad multiple times.  Each time I reconnect and sync all of these songs sync instead of the chosen playlist. Settings on Summary page are Sync Only Selected Songs and Videos. Music only the playlist is checked.

How to I stop iTunes from reloading what was on the iPad instead of what I have selected?  Summary screen shows "Sync only checked songs and videos"  Music has only the selected playlist.  All songs were deleted from iPad by swiping them to the left and hitting delete (very time consuming).  Sync is set to manual.  However whenever I hit Sync, the old music gets put back on the iPad.  I have had this happen at least 6 times.

Solved it.  "Automatically fill free space with songs" was checked on the Music page.  Worked perfectly once this was unchecked.

  • How can I just sync the checked songs from my iTunes to my iPod?

Okay, I cannot figure out how to sync my iPod (5th gen touch) with only the checked items.
I noticed on the summary page it says, "sync only checked songs and videos" well I have that box checked.
I have all my music checked that I want on my Ipod as well. So what am I doing wrong?
No music is syncing to my iPod?

What exactly happens when you try to sync?
Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
If so have you done anything like update iTunes on the computer since it last successfully synced?

  • What's the diff btwn: Sync only chkd songs & videos and Manually manage them?

There's no way to logically logic this out. Sounds like a Mensa question. OK, the full text:
For iPhones, iPads, I assume iPod Touch too (don't have one), when you set your sync/backup prefs in iTunes, under Summary > Options: checkboxes #3 and #6 read:
Sync only check songs and videos
    Manually manage music and videos
To confuse more: if I cycle thru the tabs after plugging an iDevice (Apps, Tones, Music, Movies, TV Shows, Books, Photos), except for the Apps page, each has a checkbox at the top of each page such as: Sync Tones, Sync Music, Sync Movies, etc.
Checking any of these boxes allows you to "manually" then check the content you want to move on to your iDevice, and of course unchecking an item on your iDevice will remove it upon Sync/Backup
    Back to Summary > Options:
    I thought I'd experiment:
I had #3 checked plus the Sync boxes on the Music, Movies, TV Shows, Books and Photos (from iPhoto). I unchecked it and nothing changed.
Then I checked #6. Oooops. #3 grayed out, and all my checks on each page unchecked.
Worse, going to the Music page, where you can see all your songs in your iTunes Library, without the Sync Music checked, the page is blank. Checking it again brings forth a very scary alert
So.. until I figure this out, seems my experimenting may cost me to cleanse my iPad Air of all it's music. Not the end of the world, I just have to recheck what I had on it from Library and reSync.
Adages a side (curiosity killed the cat comes to mind)
I have to assume there are differences, even if just nuances between all these options for managing your stuff on your iDevices. These options have been in iTunes for as long back as I can remember. Unfortunately today I was backing up readying for iOS 8 and got curious, and here I am. Woe as me.
I'd sure like to understand all this, and know what should be checked if you want to manage your media and apps manually.

How to undo unwanted changes like mine above:
I luckily opened my iPad Air in the left column of iTunes where Playlists are and clicked Music (still experimenting, will I EVER learn?) but I got a message noting that I had made a change and did I want to Apply, which as you know from above I didn't. I clicked what ever the negative was (No, Cancel, etc.) and my settings were all restored as before I started checking and unchecking. Even my Summary > Options #3 was checked as before starting all this.
    Whew. Saved.
But I still as I bet many others want to know how to manage the manage checkboxes

  • How do I sync just checked songs & playlists, not everything in iCloud?

I used to be able to sync selected songs, especially playlists, to my iPhone 5.  Currently, the window for syncing music in iTunes when I connect my iPhone tells me that I can access music from iCloud and therefore seems to have copied all my playlists to my iPhone.  However, my iPhone lacks the capacity to store all my music, so most playlists are effectively empty.  I'd prefer to choose manually which playlists are copied to my phone, particularly because when my phone is connected to the audio system in my car, it's distracting to have to scroll through a very long list of playlists to find what I'm looking for.  Is it possible to "turn off" the iCloud feature so that I can select which music to have on my iPhone?

You set that in iTunes on the Summary tab of your iTunes sync setting (check Sync only checked songs and videos, then check the songs in your library that you want on your phone, check Sync Music on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings and sync).
