Sync Options? Dot Mac sync? Dual Mac Sync?

Hi,
I own about one of everything Apple makes , but I'm struggling with the sync functionality on the iphone.
I've read where some have figured out how to sync their music library on one computer and their address book, ical, etc from another computer, but that seems to be the extent of the options list.
---See this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6088977&#6088977
I would like to sync my contacts, mail rules, and ical via Bluetooth with my MacBook Pro and my music via USB with my Mac Pro home media server (this is where I sync my ipods, etc - it's the only place I store music and video).
Is there any way (yet) to sync address book, ical and other business-related apps via BLuetooth, or, if not BT, then via wireless?
I keep searching and finding 'rumors' that this is 'coming' from a couple months ago, but no instructions per se as yet.
Thanks for any help.
PS: Apple - the interface is slick, but you're falling down on the 'business application' side of things, as has always been your achilles' heal. Please pick up the 'business' pace a bit! We're not all college students...

You can not sync and info via bluetooh, the blue tooth is only for headsets at this time. All your contacts, ect. haveto be synced via iTunes no other way.

How can you confirm it is bidirectional ? I have not seen a site that confirms that is it bidirectional.

ONLY when Google Sync is activated from Address Book, you will see a file created in ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.google.GoogleContactSyncAgent.plist which contains the sync schedule, which by default is 3600seconds (an hour).
The user can change the sync schedule by editing that file using TextEdit.
*_Duplicates using Google sync with Address Book_* ?
I've noticed that my 2000 contacts where duplicated at least 3 times which then I had 5800 contacts about.

  • 10.4.6 - dot mac pref pane doesn't remember password

With the recent update on my G4 alBook to 10.4.6 from 10.4.5 (using combo updater and due precautions, including doing a sync before updating as Apple recommends) The dot mac/sync pane of System Preferences is acting weird: it doesn't remember my dot mac password. Every time I write it in, it connects and checks and says it is verified and I have so many days left in my dot mac subscription. If I then go to the sync tab and try to sync- it hangs with the Beachball of Death. If I just write in the password in the dot mac pane and quit System Preferences after it has been verified, next time I open the pref pane I am back where I started - an invitation to join dot mac, my user name filled in but not the password. So obviously I can't sync my stuff with dot mac on the Powerbook, though I can on the G4 Dual MDD running OSX 10.4.5.
Anybody else seeing this behavior? I'd be grateful for suggestions. I have repaired permissions and checked the disk which is OK and I reset the PRAM at startup with the 4 finger exercise. I could trash some preferences...but which?

    Nina,
Are you familiar with the concept and the troubleshooting procedures which are associated with the removal/replacement of plist files? .plist files, contain instructions for recording and executing tasks associated with the the application or function that owns them. They can and do become corrupted. If you look in the ~Library/Preferences Folder you can usually guess what application or function the .plist serves by analyzing the file name.
Proper identification of the appropriate .plist is not always so obvious, but for example com.apple.Safari.plist is the preference file for Safari. When an application malfunctions, removing the associated .plist file from the preferences folder to the Desktop is often the best first troubleshooting step. If you have a problem with an application, Quit the application, find the associated plist file in the Preferences Folder, and move it to the Desktop as a first step in your troubleshooting procedure. Then log out/in or restart and re-evaluate the performance of the application.
A new default .plist file is automatically created in your Preferences Folder after you remove the recalcitrant .plist and initiate the log out/in restart sequence. You can expect default application behavior and you will have to reset some preferences. If the application or function returns to normal after removing the .plist file, it will prove that the original file was corrupt, and you can now safely trash the .plist file which you placed on the Desktop. If the application or function is unsatisfactory, the original copy of the plist file which was placed on the Desktop can be safely returned to the preferences folder.
If you are having problems with any aspect of OS X, experiment with deleting the appropriate .plist file. Plist corruption is common and .plist file deletion often cures many problems. Too many users try intricate solutions first and end up complicating their problem. If you are familiar with the concept and understand the consequences, I would recommend that you explore removal/replacement of the com.apple.DotMacSync.plist.
Another troubleshooting procedure you may want to explore is Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption, by Dr. Smoke.

  • Trouble Viewing iWeb site on dot Mac account

I have a home office and I also have a studio. When I am at home working, I have no trouble viewing photo pages on my dot mac account from either Safari or Firefox.
When I am at my studio, however, I cannot browse my photo pages on Safari nor with Firefox.
Safari gives me the "server stopped responding" error and Firefox displays "the server timed out".
    So, what's up with this?
At the home office, I use wireless DSL access with a MacBook. At my studio, I'm using an iMac wirelessly on my network. The the service provided is through Comcast broadband cable modem.
On both machines, I have iLife & iWork 08. I do not sync my dot mac account with the 2 machines. The original files for the photo pages reside on my studio iMac.
So why can I browse my way through my photo pages when I'm surfing the web from my home office, but am unable to see them when I'm working at my studio?
Thanks for assisting me if you can.

I will when I go back to my studio. I'm just trying to understand where you are going with this. I have contractors who work in and out of my studio with their laptops. They use XP & Vista and they have absolutely NO problem what so ever accessing my photo pages. In fact, when I couldn't access from my iMac, I had one of them check to see if the site was down. They could see my pages just fine with no problem. So...if they can reach them using the same network while sitting at the desk next to mine...why can't my iMac reach the pages?
    Thanks.

  • Does iCal work with out dot mac?

I know this sounds like a stupid question.. but my freind is a top web designer and is offering to host my iWeb site for me but I would still like to use iCal and have it viewable on line somehow.
I know that I can do this with iWeb no problem but would appreciate help with the iCal issue. Eventually I hope to get an iPhone as well and sync ical betwen that and the macbookpro but have found the iDisc to be slow and the iWeb to be limited.
It is just this issue with iCal which has kept me paying £70 per annum for dot mac.
    Cheers

That's a good question and I may not be able to technically answer that since I use the dot Mac service for that.
At the present time, I believe that is one of the key features of dot Mac, the ability to sync across multiple computers as well as the ability to publish your calendar to the web. All of this is done through the dot mac service.
I am not sure, however, if there is a work around where you can tell iCal what URL to publish to. But to answer your question, no, you cannot use the share online feature without dot Mac.

  • Why do I still have all contacts in dot mac instead of iCloud?

Why do I still have all my contacts in dot mac instead of iCloud? I cannot access my contacts on icloud.com. Me.com contacts are also no longer available and redirect to icloud.com

Please always post your system when you have a query: the answer to many questions is different depending on system, and this is one of those questions.
Let me guess: you have Snow Leopard or Leopard (or even Tiger) and when you migrated from MobileMe and were warned that you needed Lion you ignored it.
You cannot sync contacts to iCloud on anything earlier than Lion. When you migrated your contacts were removed from MobileMe but because you don't have Lion the process could not place them on the iCloud server.
There is no workaround for this other than downgrading from Lion - not a process you want to undertake lightly. If you have an iPhone you can sync your contacts using iTunes.
If my guess is wrong, and you do have Lion, that's a whole different can of digital worms.

  • Dot Mac aliases

I finally got myself an iPhone despite what I read about how it does not handle the aliases I use for my dot Mac account. I've been using the work-around for it where you set up your account as a generic IMAP account with the alias as the e-mail address however, even though I set the alternate account as the default and I am very careful to read all my dot Mac mail from the generic IMAP version, when ever I reply to an e-mail it has been sending it from my regular account address rather than the correct alias. This will not work for me. I'm glad I've only replied to a couple of family members but I'm trying not to use that address for ANY e-mail, just the alias.
I tried disabling the regular dot Mac version that the sync set up but then the IMAP one doesn't seem to update properly and the mail program would freeze or not work properly. When I turned it back on so I had the regular dot Mac setup (which lets me send photos to my web gallery automatically, something i like) and the generic IMAP account using the alias my mail downloads and opens normally. I just have to put up with getting told I have twice as much e-mail. I think that disabling the regular dot Mac setup and just using the generic IMAP setup worked to force it to reply from the correct account but I am not sure.
I really need to know how to make this work properly since there is no way for me to check that it is sending from the correct account when I reply to e-mail.

Am I really the only dot mac user who uses aliases instead of my account address who also uses an iPhone? It's very hard to reply to email on my phone because of this. Even if I remember to go and turn of my dot mac account in the mail settings so that the alternate setup will reply properly my replies don't include the original message because wthout the dot mac account active the regular IMAP setup won't download the entire email. I'd really like to be able to fix this. I figured that I'd find the answer here since this was where I was told how to do it.

  • Pages )8, dot Mac and Windows XP

I've tried to store documents created in Pages '08/Leopard on my Dot Mac iDisk. If I open them in my MacBook, all is well. If I go to work, and access the docs on a WindowsXP PC, I get a Windows folder containing a zip file of an xml document, and some pdf thumbnails of lower quality versions of the document. What's happening here? My colleagues and I need to be able to edit the documents. So exporting to pdf, though desirable as it retains fonts/formatting etc more reliably than Word 2000 and 2003 which is used at work, is not really an option. Is there a way I can create a document in Pages '08, store it on my iDisk and retrieve an editable, correctly formatted version at work the next day?
I am a school teacher, so a lot of the documents I create have to be child friendly - this means that they should retain their layout, transparent objects, colour gradients, shadows etc as much as possible.
Whilst I am on the subject of Pages '08, is there a way to change the direction of text within a cell of a table, so that it reads "sideways"?

    Hello
Every iWork component create documents whose structure is "package".
This is a special kind of folder containing several objects. One of them is Index.xml.gz which contains the description of the document.
As Windows is an old beast, it is unable to decipher this kind of document.
When You create a document with Pages for instance, save it as a Pages document then export it as a .doc file.
You will be able to send it in the other world.
I may be wrong but as far as I know, Pages is unable to "read sideways".
I was said that the best application doing that is Mellel
    <http://www.redlers.com/>
    but I never used it.

  • Publishing from two different machines to same DOT MAC - WATCH OUT!

As of this week - not sure if it's iWeb 08 or changes on the DOT MAC back end, but here's what I can reproduce:
I have two machines set up with iWeb: a MBPro and an iMac.
The MBPro has iWeb set to publish about 6-8 sites to my dot mac account - I often use it for scratch sites or temp sites.
The iMac has iWeb set to publish 3 additional (different) sites to my dot mac account. One of these sites is part of a business site - and is rather critical.
As of this week, when publishing from the MBPro, it wipes out the dot mac installation of the first of three sites published from the iMac (the first site listed in the site list column in iWeb on the iMac).
If I publish from the iMac, it wipes out the dot mac installation of the first of eight sites published from the MBPro (the first site listed in the site list column in iWeb on the MBPro).

I just found this overwriting problem when my daughter updated her site to our shared .Mac account. I have developed this workaround that is not too painful. Only one computer can post directly to the .Mac account. The other computers will have to mount the iDisk and use iWeb's "Publish to a Folder..." option to save the site on the iDisk. Before you can save the site, you have to create a new folder for it. Go to your iDisk, then to the /Web/Sites/ folder. There create a new folder that is appropriate to the name of the site you will be publishing. Now publish to that new folder from iWeb. After that you should be able to get to the new site by going to http://web.mac.com/YOURDOT_MAC_NAME/NEW_FOLDERNAME/
Hope that works for you, AskJacob.

  • Publishing to a non dot Mac site

I'm trying to make a slideshow in iWeb and upload it to my usual web pages which are not dot mac sites. Nothing is working, so I wonder if maybe that's not an option and iWeb can only be used to publish on Mac.com pages.
    rtk

Big sloppy gooey mess. I published it all to Dreamweaver and then I got into the icky sticky html and managed to make the slide show on a black background, but the timing didn't exist and I couldn't reduce the screen size to allow for any text or hyperlinks. So, I thought I'll just do it the old way in Dreamweaver, but I have the 30 day trial which doesn't seem to permit me to use my older DW. Now, the shockwave and flash don't work any more. I suppose that's so I'll buy more stuff. Discouraged? I sure am. It seems all this software has little things planted in them that scream Buy More! Now I'll see if there's a free trial on Flash, but it's getting more confusing. I like the simplicity of iWeb, but I need more control. I like the control of Dreamweaver, but it's sloppy.

  • Teachers sharing one dot mac with iWeb need help- sites are being lost

Sorry to be lengthy- Here's the question and issue first and then the background.
Question/Issue: Anyone know a way we can have multiple people (eventually 20 or so) with their own computers creating sites in iWeb and publishing them to a common dot mac account without wiping each other out?
Background:I am a teacher and at our school we have a single dot mac account. A few of us have been using iWeb (2 on iWeb 08 and 1 on iWeb 06) and posting our sites to dot mac with no problems. The iWeb 06 sites went to a folder under Web> Sites>iWeb in our dot-mac's iDisk; the iWeb 08 sites were directly under the Web>Sites folder. When sites were uploaded from different computers there was no problem (they all had unique names) and it worked great until this week.Even the 2 users both on iWeb 08 could send their sites to the iDisk and nothing would be deleted, just more site folders were added.
We are now all on iWeb 08 and so nothing goes into the folder on the dot-mac's iDisk under iWeb, they all go as unique sites- no problem I thought.
Our problem is now that when any one of us update our sites, it wipes out everyone else's site (since their site isn't on our computer). It didn't used to be that way 2 weeks ago !!! Could this be something new with the migration to mobile me (if it is, this really ***** for us)
I know a solution is to publish the sites to folders and then drag to the dot mac in sub-folders under Web>Sites instead of publish and each of us can have our own folder, but its a pain and not all of the teachers will be able to do this.
I think there is a feature in iWeb06 called personal domains, but I think we can only have 2, so not sure if this will help.
Does anyone know a way to set the defaults in the domain.sites2 file or in iWeb so it will use a sub-folder when loading up to dot mac? This way each of us can have our settings different and it will load for us automatically on the iDisk.
Does anyone know why this used to work and now it doesn't?
    Any other ideas- Help Please

    From my own experience.
When you publish to dotMac the index.html file in the root redirects to the top Site in the list of the iWeb domain file.
I use ca. 40 Sites in some 30 domain files. And most are customized after publishing. Plus a lot more irregular stuff.
iWeb remembers what Site in which domain was published last.
When I choose a different domain file, iWeb will create a new index.html file to redirect to the "new" Site.
As far as I could determine, none of the either published Sites are deleted. If iWeb did delete previous published Sites I would not change domain files.
In your case the following will happen. Every student publishes his/her Site(s). The last one published will be the default Site.
As long as no-one changes his/her Sitename or add a new Site at the top of the list, the default Site last published will be that.
Make sure everybody's Sitename is unique.
I use a custom index.html file in the root. So I have to pay attention that when I publish a new site, the custom index.html page is overwritten. I keep a copy of that index.html file in the root. I can replace the index.html file in case of emergency.
Does anyone know a way to set the defaults in the domain.sites2 file or in iWeb so it will use a sub-folder when loading up to dot mac? This way each of us can have our settings different and it will load for us automatically on the iDisk.
Don't look for hidden settings. If it was possible, it would be visible in the preferences. Accept the way iWeb/dotMac does its job. It wasn't designed to be used by multiple users with multiple computers and only one account. That should give you a hint.
All other problems are purely organizational. Personally I wouldn't trust multiple persons on one account. Give them their own account. If they mess up things they are responsible. Or find another solution.

  • How do I change the primary SMTP server address on my iPhone DOT-MAC accoun

My original account smtp settings were for dot-mac. I am having ever increasing problems getting mail to send. I can find the settings for my primary SMTP server, but cannot edit or update them (currently smtp.mac.com), as they are all gray'd out and cannot be changed. I would like to update these settings to smpt.me.com. Is it necessary for me to delete this account in order to update the settings? That seems rather lame.

What did not work? You could not add an additional SMTP server? It does not matter what the primary is listed as....turn it off. Then turn on the additional server you added.
Better yet remove your .mac account and add it back as .me account.

  • Back To My Mac - Dot Mac Family Pack

Anyone know if Back To My Mac will work with two computers using different accounts with a dot mac "family pack"? BTMM works fine with two different family pack accounts while on the home network, but I can't seem to make them talk over the Internet (using Airport Extreme routers at both locations with UPNP turned on)...

It just so happens that all the impossible problems happen to me.

Is there a way to publish a calendar to dot mac so that it shows up in month view instead of week view? Perhaps a modification of the URL ....

Yes, I know you can change the view once the page loads. I was just hoping you could display the month view as a default. Maybe something will change when Leopard come out next week.

if you've changed your startup options on mac to start in windows, how do you fix and go back to mac. I can't get my mac to switch back to mac, it is like stuck in widows mode, I have tried holding down the options key upon start up and that did not fix it either.

The Apple drivers you install in Windows also puts a Startup Drive icon in the Task Bar. Choose that to change the startup disk back OS X.

  • Using iWeb on other servers than dot MAC?

Can people confirm that one can use iWeb with other servers than Apple's dot Mac site? The fine print says: *iWeb publishing requires Internet and webserver access (.Mac recommended). So from that I guess it is feasible but is it easy to set up?
    Thanks

After the sales rep at the Apple store confirmed vehemently that I would lose no functionality publishing to my own server, I was disappointed to discover this was not the case.
I wanted to use my own webserver, since there is a perfectly capable apache server already running on my iMac. I do understand that Apple wants to sell their dotmac product, but they have stranded too many users with their approach on iWeb.
I upgraded to iLife 06 specifically for iWeb, and I feel cheated by the withdrawal of functionality unless I buy their dotmac product.
