Sync playcounts without using "autofill"?

Hi, folks - I'm new to this, but it appears to me that using the "autofill" setting in iTunes will do 2 things:
(a) Pull in new play-counts & "last played" dates for the songs in my iPod nano and sync/update those songs in my computer's iTunes library, and -
(b) prevent me from filling my nano manually with my own music or playlists.
I love (a), but I'm not a big fan of (b). Is there a way to keep iPod/iTunes playcounts in sync WITHOUT also using "autofill"? Can I use one without the other, or is it all or nothing?
thanks

I let iTunes automatically sync to my nano (I'm too lazy to manually manage music transfers)
In iTunes, I set my nano to sync to specific playlists (both regular & smart playlists). During syncing playcount information and play date is transfered back and forth between the nano and iTunes.
I find this feature very useful with a particular smartplayslist of mine, "forgotten songs" that populates itself based on playcounts (playcount = 0, limits content to songs never played entirely, combine this with a fixed GB cap, the playlist never gets bigger than my nano)
With this approach, everytime I listen to music from the playlist (either on the nano of iTunes), the playcount gets updated in iTunes, and the next sync results in this song disapearing from the playlist, and being replaced by another song. When I sync with my nano, I get a fresh batch of forgotten music to rediscover!
Once all songs have been listened to once, I can reset the playcount criteria to 1 and start all over.
Another note: when I hear a real gem or a real turkey, I assign one or five stars to the song on the nano. This automatically places these recently ranked 5-star songs in another smartplaylist "best tunes".
The turkeys I can search out from the iTunes library and "wish them into the cornfield".

  • Syncing iCal without using Mobileme

This is probably a basic question but I'd appreciate help please.
My wife and I each have a MBP which are synced for contacts, bookmarks and calendars.  I have a Mobileme account in my name and my wife has an iPhone.
We now want to sync just the calendars from out MBPs to her iPhone.  We can do this fairly easily via iTunes but is there a way we can do this wirelessly?  We tried adding MobileMe to her iPhone but ended up with duplicate entries for everything in iCal as it was all transferred to the Mobileme account.  We don't want to involve MobileMe as I want to keep this just for any personal/work stuff.
The iTunes system works but it would be good to be able to have the iPhone updated automatically.  Is there a way of doing this please. (BTW, I'm still on Snow Leopard if this makes a difference)
Many thanks in advance for any help.
    John

    You could use Google Sync:

How can i sync my calendar in Outlook 2007 with iTunes 11.1.3.8 WITHOUT using iCloud?

your link shows how to sync, i know how to do that.
i specifically wanted to sync my outlook calendar with my phone, not my outlook calendar with icloud calendar.
apparently you have to go into setup on phone and tell phone not to sync calendars with icloud so you can get choice to sync phone via itunes.
    thanks anyways for trying.

  • I am brand new to the Ipad.  I can't use ICloud unless I upgrade my 10.5 Leopard.  Is there a way to sync documents created in Pages to the IPad without using ICloud?

Hello.  I am a newbie to the Ipad.  I am currently working with an OS 10.5 Leopard MAC.  I understand that in order to use ICloud I would need to purchase OSX Snow Leopard and OSX Lion.  I am attempting to avoid the expense and to the extent possible sync my IPad with my MAC.  I have created documents on my MAC in pages.  Is there a way to have access to those documents on the IPad without using ICloud.
A second question concerns web browsing, sometimes you'll open up a page or image and not know how to go back to the previous page. So do I just close and reopen safari altogether or is there another way to get to the previous page.
Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Actually you can use iCloud with the Mac running OS X 10.5.8. You don't sync the documents - you upload to or download them from iCloud.
You can open a browser on your Mac - Safari is preferred - log into icloud.com, enter your username and password, click on the iWorks icon, click on the Pages section at the top - and then you can drag documents into the browser window to upload files - and you can select a file in the cloud to download to the Mac. I do this on my iMac at work running Tiger 10.4.11. It's kind of slow - and you will get a warning that you may be using a supported browser - but it works.
In any event, you can use iOS file sharing to send the Pages docs to your iPad. you have to connect to the Mac and do this via iTunes.
iWork for iOS: About iTunes File Sharing
Just tap the arrows in the toolbar in Safari to go back and forth. You can open multiple pages using tabs. tap on the + sign to add another tab in Safari.

And you must be using a recent version of iTunes on your iMac in order to activate the iPad,  So, no.
You don't need a computer to activate a new iOS device anymore. Anything with iOS 5 can be activated over a WiFi network (or cellular if that applies).

  • Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB to iPhone or iPad and permits only syncing by iCloud, which I don't want to use.  Any ideas on how to sync without using iCloud?

Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB cable from my MacBook Air to my iPhone and iPad and permits  syncing only by iCloud.  Mountain Lion permitted this via the Info tab on iTunes.  I don't want to use iCloud.  Any ideas with Maverick on how to sync Address Book and Calendar from computer to iPhone and iPad without using iCloud?

ymcneil - thanks for the work around. But isn't it amazing Apple forces us to do this to maintain our privacy.
I live in Australia where there are good privacy laws protecting  citizens. I do not want to be forced to use iCloud when the data sits in  the USA with weaker privacy laws and also able to be seen by the US  Government under the Patriot Act. Further I suspect Apple will  interrogate my contacts and calendar for commercial purposes and I do  not want that either.
I  chose to synch my calendar and contacts with my iphone and ipad. I have  relied for years on carrying around my phone with my diary on it. I can  no longer do that.
Whoever  made this decision at Apple has to be someone who knows little about  the world. I can actually see EU regulators getting very annoyed by  this.
I too woud like the itunes mac to iphone/ipad local backup given back.
In the meantime - thanks for the work around

  • Is it possible to sync a clip without using multicam ?

    Hi there,
I have some video clips recorded on 2 videos, we just say Video A & B.
On the timeline, I mostly used clips from Video A.
But for one 10 sec duration I prefer clip from Video B.
How to I sync this 10-sec clip form video B to video A without using multicam and without using the trial & error method to match the audio wave. I am looking for a sync function, is there one ? One where you click sync and the clip auto move the clip to match. (Just like how you do in in mulitcam editor where u select the clip to sync with the clip in monitoring angle).
    Is it possible ?
    Thanks

If I understand correctly, you want the 10 second B clip synced to As audio. In other words, are you using A's audio throughout your project?
    Yes that is correct ...
    Russ H wrote:
If that's the case, I'm not sure why you wouldn't just make a short multiclip and over-write (or replace) what's currently there. That would be the easiest. The manual way would only be slightly more difficult; stack them with a connect edit; zoom in and align the wave forms.
Yes, I want to put the short clip B over A. But I want to avoid the difficult way of stacking it up bcos the positioning is always not synce. Very cumbersome to match the audio waveform.
But before I make a short multiclip (I assumne you mean compound clip), I still need clip B to sync to clip A. With only one B clip, I do not want to create a multicam ...
    Thanks Russ, any ideas ?

  • SYNC WITHOUT USING ITUNE

can I stnc between computer and ipad without using itune?

What is the secret to syncing calendars, contacts, and notes without the computer?
Both my IPad and IPod are set up to sync thru icloud.  Plenty of icloud storage remaining, both units are plugged in; both are in sleep mode, but nothing syncs until I boot my computer and turn on the icloud control panel.  (I would like to leave it at home when I travel.)
And what is the secret to syncing the IPad and IPod with Outlook 2010? Sometimes my contacts, notes, and calendar sync, sometimes not; my notes rarely sync.  Must Oulook be closed? Open?  Must I manually open icloud each time I want to sync, even though the control panel is on the Windows 7 task bar?
