Sync session failed to start error

I updated my iphone 3GS to the new iOS5. The softwre unstalled fine I suppose, but it never finished syncing my music, photos, etc... even some apps don't work anymore. I try to restore but iTunes is stalling (spinning balloon) and will not complete the Syncing process, it's stuck in Step 2 of 7 (Backup).
I don't know what to do, I've relaunch iTunes several times but it will automatically try to sync, so I can't even turn off auto sync to do it manulally or can't even try to RESTORE.
Please HELP!!

1. Try doing them one at a time

  • "the iphone could not be synced because the sync session failed to start" error!

I have been having all manner of problems synching my iPhone 4s; attempting to synch gets the dreaded ..."session failed"; synch appears to happen but doesn't; synch causes iTunes to hang requiring a force-quit etc etc.
This has been going on for months & has been driving me insane. Only happens with this one phone, not our other iDevices.
I tried every bit of trobleshooting advice I could find & nothing was working so I finally went to see a Genius at my local.
He was totally mystified so after 1/2 an hour of discussion he replaced my phone with a new one thinking it must be some weird hardware fault.
I plug the new phone in &... same problems.
I then started to try & isolate every posible cause.
I totally reinstalled iTunes, that didn't work. I removed all .plist files etc, that didn't work. So I started digging around in the iTunes files that hang around in the library folder & one by one I quarantined them, restarted iTunes, tried to synch etc etc.
    Finally I struck gold!
I isolated the file iTunes Library Extras.itdb and on restart this file respawned & synch started instantly & finished perfectly.
So in short... if you are having this problem try moving this file elsewhere and then restarting iTunes & your synch to see what happens!

The way I fixed this (though I'm using a iTouch 4G): disconnect your iPhone from the computer, shut down iTunes, then reset your iPhone by holding the Power/Sleep & Home buttons together for 10 seconds. Restart iTunes, then when your iPhone restarts, reconnect it to the computer, and everything should work fine

  • Cannot sync. Error message says "sync session failed to start"

I am not able to sync my ipod. The error message "the ipod could not be synced because the sync session failed to start" keeps popping up. I have tried both syncing it plugged in and by wifi and the same message appears

Same problem today. Took five times to reinstall without any error messages. Apple has posted a way to fix and you should follow their's first. I finally got to upldate correctly by doing their fix but with one difference. I did the following:
    1) Went to the C:\program files (x86)\iTunes and C:\program files\iTunes folders and moved every file ending in .dll to the desktop (even if two files in same location had the same name, just replace)
    2) Restarted computer and still got error message
    3) Uninstalled all apple programs possible in the following order......itunes, apples software update, apple mobile device support, bonjour, and apple application support.....all performed using the microsoft control panel
    4) put all the .dll files on the desktop in the trash and emptied (this is a step apple support did not specifically put in their fix but for a final try I wanted to delete everything apple).
    5) Restarted computer.
    6) Re-installed itunes from apple website
No error messages during re-install and was able to open shortcut in one try. Even updated my ipad to make sure everything was working.

    Hello brainiac08
Typically that error occurs because of a backup issue. Check out the article below to resolve it.

Quit iTunes, restart your computer, restart your iPad and try again. If it doesn't work with a restart of the iPad, try a reset of the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

B-rock, thanks for posting the above.  I actually have the same issue, running Windows XP and I don't have that backup location, \Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\.  When I go to Documents and Settings\(username)\ there's a AppData folder followed by:\LocalLow\DataMngr\ .
I have the latest update, 5.0.1 and I have the iPod Touch 3rd gen.
I have tried removing itunes and all that is associated with it then reinstalling and keep getting the same message.  I've reset my ipod thinking that would help but still, no backup.
In iTunes, Edit, Preference, Device there are no backups.
What am I doing wrong, can you help?
    Thank you!

  • Error message help: "The iPod "CKK's iPod" could not be synced because the sync session failed to start."

I get this error message when trying to sync my iPod Touch, "The iPod “CKK's iPod” could not be synced because the sync session failed to start."  I have done the restore on it, but still get the message... I realize that the restore takes away everything on the iPod, but I was hoping I wouldn't get the message again.. nop

Just made one very simple move without having to restore iPhone or reinstall iTunes..
1st step:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 *Read 'in my case' in here first before following this link*
Follow that link to restart (or if necessary) reinstall your Apple mobile device support.
In my case, Leave iPhone connected all the way. I first exit iTunes. Then i stopped the Apple Mobile device support (by following a part on that link above in step 1) which Effectively made my iPhone undetectable on itunes but discoverable by windows as a 'camera device'. Then while device is still connected, i started the Apple mobile dev support again. Now i open itunes and there my iPhone re-appears.
2nd step: After your iphone re-appears on iTunes, press Sync and all is well...
P.S, Mine is iPhone 4 running on iOS 5, iTunes 10.5, Windows 7..

  • ERROR: "The iPhone could not be synced because the sync session failed to start.?"

I have iTunes 10.5 (whatever the most updated is) with the new iPhone 4S. Its new, i never dropped it, and i'm 99.99999% confident there's nothing wrong with it.
With that in mind, these last few days this strange error, "the iphone could not be synced because the sync session failed to start"... It used to sync properly but now it just doesn't sync at all.
I have Windows Vista also. This is not normal and i've never seen this before.
What can I do to fix this error?

The way I fixed this (though I'm using a iTouch 4G): disconnect your iPhone from the computer, shut down iTunes, then reset your iPhone by holding the Power/Sleep & Home buttons together for 10 seconds. When i try to sync my ipad with the itunes on my computer it gives me an error message.  " The sync session failed to start.  How can i fix this??  I had to uninstall itunes on my computer because of runtime error R6034.

The new iTunes has a somewhat different look from the previous version.  You can get the old look back if you prefer it by doing View > Show Sidebar in iTunes.  Or you can adapt to the new look.

  • When attempting a sync with my iPod Touch gen 5 I get this error "The iPod "****" could not be synced because the sync session failed to start."  I could not find the backup file to delete per researched support recommendation.  I have synced this iPod.

"....could not be synced because the sync session failed to start."  I have synced this iPod with this MacBook Air about 6 weeks ago.  Now it won't sync.  A possible solution is to delete the backup file located in Mac:~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/  However, I don't have a "MobileSync" folder in my Application Support folder.  Please help.
