The Linux kernel mailing list has some information that may help on identifying what sync_supers is doing, http://lkml.org/lkml/2012/4/11/147.
While you wait for kernel patches, there are some mount options that other people have suggested may help:
Use noatime or at least relatime for ext* filesystems
Use the option commit=60 or commit=300 to lengthen the time between syncs of data and metadata from 5 seconds to 1 or 5 minutes.  However, if the computer crashes between commits there may be some data loss.

  • IP address 192.168.1.255 active every 30 seconds - why?

The IP address 192.168.1.255 is active every 30 seconds - why? I use Virus Barrier and also Little Snitch to monitor network receiving and sending activity... Since I began this process I've been baffled by the fact that this particular IP address, 192.168.1.255, is so active - about every 30 seconds the Little Snitch window shows sending and receiving activity after the the line "cupsd." I assume it's harmless - but since I can't seem to determine why this is happening, I can't be 100% sure... I hoping someone familiar with this network issue can explain why this is happening. Thanks very much.

    Hi there,
An IP address starting with 192.168 always is associated with a router. To have items being sent to and from it is therefore normal.
    Nothing to worry about.

  • Hard disk always working - sync_supers writting to disk every 5 second

As the topic says. My computer is on my desk while I work and I can't stand the noise of hard disk doing something every 5 seconds. I think I noticed this since 2.6.36 kernel.
When computer is completely idle it still writes to disk.
Tried Ubuntu 10.10 and got the same result. I have WD Caviar Blue 500gb. On ext4 filesystem there is jbd2/sda* doing write every 5 seconds or so and on reiserfs there is sync_supers doing the same. I guess those that is journaling acitivy, but its anoying to hear hard drive working when computer is completely idle.
    Any tips?

  • Hard drive activity every 10 seconds

While troubleshooting a problem with my power saver/screen saver, I noticed that every ten(10) seconds my hard drive activity lamp flashes and a small blue circle appears on the screen (about one second).
I suspect that this is why my PC never sleeps even though the power option is set so sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity. My screen saver never activates either.
My system is an ENVY h8 1500t.
Task manager shows no applications are running but there are many processes and services running.
Any idea what could be causing this recurring activity???
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Using "Event Viewer", I found that error events are being initiated at about every 10 seconds. There are thousands of them. I suspect that this may be th source of my problem.
    There are also many warnings.
    The errors pertain to "HPConnectedRemoteServices.exe.
    Event ID's are 1000, 1026, 7031
What is this service and how can I stop the errors?

  • Process "mdworker" Writes to Disk Every 10 Seconds

I noticed disk activity occurring every 10 seconds while my computer was idle. In Activity Monitor I could see this writing going on and at the same time the process "mdworker" would tick up just a little bit of processor activity. A Restart didn't help. The following is what I did to make it stop. I've seen many posts on here with a similar problem so maybe this info will be helpful to someone.
I brought up a Terminal window and entered the following command:
    sudo fs_usage -w -f filesys
That will show youa continuous list of all processes that are reading/writing to disk (use Control-c to make it stop). I found mdworker doing a fair amount of disk activity every 10 seconds. But the important thing is that it was the identical activity every 10 seconds, and the common thing in almost every entry was "Default Folder X". So I concluded that it was having trouble indexing something about Default Folder's data. (mdworker is used to index your data via Spotlight.) After uninstalling and reinstalling Default Folder, the constant writing stopped and has yet to happen again.
If you're having a problem similar to this you may find this method of identifying the culprit and fixing it useful.

Try this, courtesy of Baltwo. It will delete the Spotlight V-100 index and then force Spotlight to re-index.
Be absolutely certain to only copy/paste these commands exactly. DO NOT try to type these in. One typo or wrong space in the first one could wipe your drive competely. Hit return after each.
Delete the entire Spotlight directory and reindex, running these commands in the Terminal app:
    *sudo rm -R /.Spotlight-V100*
    *sudo mdutil -i on /*
    *sudo mduitl -E /*

  • Streaming freezing while playing, unless I touch the screen every few seconds to keep the streaming actively flowing.

Streaming from iPad, through an app and the streaming will stop unless I touch the screen which seems to wake it up and will begin from where it stopped. Can anyone tell me why it does this? Kind of makes watching something a little annoying. It's as if the iPad goes to sleep, which stops the streaming. Is there a way to keep the streaming going without having to touch the screen every few seconds to have a the streaming continue as a steady feed?
    Thanks,
    David H.

If you are streaming through an app it may need it to be awake so it can receive the feed on the iPad and then airplay it, depending on how  the app functions. You can set the auto lock to never

  • Problem with MacMail on MacBook Air - mail with 32MB attachment appearing in "recovered messages" folder every 12 seconds

Problem with MacMail on MacBook Air
3 days ago I failed to send a mail with a large (32MB) attachment - and it is no longer in my outbox, draft mails or sent file.
BUT a copy of this same mail now appears every about 15 seconds in my "recovered messages" folder
I noticed when I received a system error saying I had a disk almost full issue - there were over 580 copies of the mail with 32MB attachment in the "recovered messages file"
I deleted them all, and deleted the Trash
BUT the message still keeps re-appearing every 15 seconds or so.  So I keep deleting them.
Since then I have not been able to receive mail (altho' I am able to send) and Mail is VERY slow
    I am running MAC OS X 10.6.8
    I am running Mail version 4.6 (1085)

Also here's the log before it happened. As you can see there is no activity from 9:48 to 10:00 am when the sound occurred.

  • MacBook Pro freezes every few seconds

    Hi All,
My two year old MacBook Pro started freezing randomly one day. It happens with any application that I have open (Safari, Word, Finder), I get the beach ball every few seconds for any operation I try doing. When the cursor comes back I have seen spikes of CPU usage and the relevant program also shows as 'Not Responding'.
I have tried everything, PRAM/SMC resetting, hardware test, disk repair etc. The latest being a clean install of Mavercks. It was fine for a few hours until it started freezing again like before. I made sure not to install much and didn't even copy my backup over yet.  Here is my EtreCheck output, can someone please HELP!!

  • Macbook pro Display freezes and darkens every few seconds

    Hey ,
I just bought my Macbook pro 15 inch late 2013 few months ago , I'm new to Apple products ,
My screen started freezing and darkening every 4 seconds , starting from when I power it , until I shut it down even If I don'tt run any programs
I can't move the cursor while it's freezing or do anything , but for example If I write any text , the text will show up when it unfreezes , and If I'm listening to music the sound doesn't freeze . I tried the safe mode , and reseting the PRAM and NVRAM , running disk utility in single user mode and said that everything is fine , I checked my hardware using apple hardware test and also said that everything is fine , I removed the flash player thinking that it may be the problem but nothing changed . I don't know what I'm doing because as I said I'm new to all of this but I tried random things and nothing seems to work , I would really appreciate any help .
PS. when I tried taking a screenshot of the screen when it freezes and darkens a little , it appeared normal in the screenshot .

After the PRAM reset did you reboot the MBP and the projector?
If not, connect and power up the projector, the power up MBP.
The monitor itself could be on the way out, is there another monitor you can check it on.
Another thing you can try is a VGA cable with the DVI adapter and see if that performs better.
You can also try a different cable, since it worked fine in the past, I'm just trying to help you.
    check some of these out:

  • My macbook pro freezes every few seconds

    Hi everyone!
About a week ago my MBP started freezing every few seconds showing the well known spinning beach balls every time, even when running no apps, I've sepnt plenty of time looking for a solution, I've read this problem might be due to a physically damaged hard drive, bt I've tested it several times using different apps and it shows no error, I've read from another discussion about Etrecheck as a useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem, so I hope some of you guys can help me checking the log output. If you see that pop up you enabled icloud. Whether you want or do not want now to use it irrelevant until you actually disable activation lock.
In order to do that you have to change your apple id back to do that just long enough to sign in and back out. System will ask you to verify, don't.
Just sign in on the prompt you getting and then logout. Once done, change apple id to what you have now and verify. Then decide if you want to
use icloud (who does not want to be able to track their phone if lost or stolen).

    Hello khanhlinh98,
I would recommend performing the following steps in order to stabilize your iPhone.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?
    Contact Apple Support.

  • A pop up is displayed every 10 seconds "You can't open the application NotificationExec because PowerPC applications are no longer supported"

Shortly after upgrading to version 10.7, I installed an application that was not compatable with the LION operating system.  The application was for an external Maxtor hard drive that appearantly was intened for an earlier Mac operating system.
Now I get the popup "You can't open the application NotificationExec because PowerPC applications are no longer supported" about every 10 seconds.
How to I get rid of this.
There is nothing to Force Quit.  The process (if it is a process) does not show up in Activity Monitor.  I have also tried to use the KILLALL command but no process is found by that name.

Absolutely frustrated by the same problem, just lost 3 hours of my day trying to uninstall after getting the same error message. The ONLY thing that worked for me was going to the following Maxtor (Seagate) URL:
    http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/199931en
I downloaded their "remove maxtor sw.zip" file
Click here to download the remove_maxtor_sw.zip file and store it on your system's desktop.
And it worked perfectly. Took 10 seconds and - after restarting - it was done.
What a waste of the day!!!

  • Mouse sputters every few seconds

I just got a brand new customized Mac Pro direct from Apple. Every few seconds, there is a delay in mouse input, but instead of just stopping, the cursor "jumps" across the screen. This would normally not be a huge problem, but in intricate tasks like 3D art or gaming, it's an incredibly serious issue. I've tried a wireless USB mouse, a wired USB mouse, the "Magic Mouse", and several different mousepads. It happens regardless of whether I'm connected to the internet. How can I figure out what the problem is? Does this issue affect anyone else?
    SPECS
    Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 3.2 GHz
    6 GB RAM
Thanks in advance...I really need this fixed soon.

After some troubleshooting I have determined that the monitor was causing the issue.
Running Activity Monitor showed me that on systems that were experiencing the mouse lag the "kernel_task" process would fluctuate between 7 and 14 percent. On systems that were not experiencing the lag the "kernel_task" would max at about 6 percent but usually was settled in below 1 percent.
A co-worker and I began disconnecting devices and watching the "kernel_task" cpu usage. When we disconnected the monitor I observed the computer with ARD and noticed that "kernel_task" dropped to a sub 1% range. When we reconnected the monitor it shot back up.
We swapped the monitor with one that was connected to a system not experiencing the issue. Once we connected the monitors to their new systems BOTH systems were stable. This led us to power. We determined that turning the monitor off and back on did not help the issue, but actually disconnecting the power from the monitor did restore "kernel_task" to a happy, stable state. This solution has now been repeated on the remaining symptomatic computers and it "fixed" all of them (not sure if it is a permanent fix or if this is going to reoccur)
Specs: Mid-2010 Mac Pro, Radeon 5870. Connected to a Dell SX2210b via DVI cable.

  • InDesign 5.5 "interruption" every 7 seconds

This problem started just this week. I'm working on a multi-page document and InDesign appears to "interrupt" every 7 seconds. I see whatever tool I'm using at that second flicker and a brief "beachball" and whatever I'm doing stops for a second, and if I happened to be doing anything at that moment, i.e. deleting text, the action is duplicated. If I happen to be moving an image or text box, the movement stops and snaps back to where it was.
I turned off PreFlight, because it first appeared that was driving the activity, but even with PreFlight off, the problem continues.
The document is 88 pages and is photo heavy, but it's only a 37 mg footprint. The photos are all jpeg placeholders until the document is ready to go to press. No images are linked to an external hard drive. All images are properly linked and no links are broken.
I have another document that is 96 pages and is 97 mg footprint and does not have the same activity, so it must be just this particular document. But, I can't figure out what InDesign is checking to cause this consistent interruption.
I've never had this problem before. I have recently updated Suitcase, but the "interruption" was happening before that update. I've used Disc Doctor to repair permissions and check the disk.
Any advice that anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    SBL
    InDesign 5.5, Mavericks 10.9.3, Suitcase 16.2.4

The document has several hyperlinks that are eventually supposed to be what they are in a digital version of the publication, but obviously not in print. Is InDesign checking those hyperlinks every 7 seconds? They imported with the text, so they were set up by writers and editors outside of InDesign, probably in Word.
I've not seen this "interruption" happen in other projects with hyperlinks that I set up whilst in InDesign.
Before I go and delete all those hyperlinks (because unfortunately I will need them later), could this be the cause of the problem?
