Sync times - wireless vs ethernet

I clocked sync times for moving a movie from iTunes on my computer to the Apple TV with three different connections:
Airport Express 25:50
Airport Extreme 12:56
Ethernet 3:47
Wired Ethernet connection was 7x faster than Airport Express & 3.4x faster than Airport Extreme.

but the port on the AppleTV is not a GigE port so that should mean that it can only do 100base Ethernet speed at best... weakest link and all that...

How do I move my Time Capsule from Ethernet back to Wireless?

Problem: i need to back to wireless use of TC from temporary use of TC via Ethernet.
Background:
I have had my Time Capsule set up for years as my Airport / wireless hub and backup. No problem.
Until I went to restore iPhone from Time Machine and, separate problem, need to connect my MacBook Pro to my Time Machine by Ethernet cable in order to get a direct connection (iPhoto was not restoring from Time Machine wireless, kept hitting I/O errors. Worked fine when I did it with direct Ethernet connection, another story).
NOW, I can not see to figure out how to revert back to regular, wireless, Airport hub connection (vs. Eternet direct)
Other information:
1. When I open Airport Utility it does not "see" my Time Capsule at all.
2. Also, it does not let me "see" manual setup, or anything else, except for "rescan" which turns up without any results.
3. The amber light keeps flashing.
4. Previously I turned TC off, then on by unplugging and plugging. Flashing amber light. Same problem.
5. All cables are plugged in tight, from ISP/FIOS cable, to TC via Ethernet, and, hopefully temporarily!, from TC to my MacBook Pro via Ethernet cable (which is what I want to undo, and go back to wireless)
6. I am able to access Internet staying with cable running in configuration in previous point.

You could have the TC join your existing wireless network as a client, or you can can connect the Time Capsule's WAN port to the modem/router.
In both cases the TC's "connection sharing" should be set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If the TC "joins" the wireless network you can only back up over your wireless connection, so the second option is preferable.

Time Capsule: wireless or ethernet?

I've got a Time Capsule on my desk, backing up from my MBP wirelessly. It occurred to me that although I like having one less wire, I could connect the two with an ethernet cable.
My question is: will there be an appreciable difference in speed? My MBP does slow not noticeably sometimes during Time Machine backups, so if an ethernet cable sped that up a lot, it might be worth it. Any advice?

There is nothing slower than wireless.
Ethernet would be a great improvement.

Connecting to Time Capsule via Ethernet AND wireless

I have connectivity through an Ethernet network to which my Time Capsule is connected. I connect wireless to TC, but another Mac which is out of wireless range -but still in the same Ethernet network,- cannot connect to TC via ethernet. Is there a way to have access to TC both wireless and via ethernet?

Yes, the TC supports both wireless and Ethernet clients simultaneously. Let's double-check the Built-in Ethernet settings on the Mac that you are trying to connect via Ethernet.
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that a Built-in Ethernet option exists. If it does not, click "+" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create a Built-in Ethernet configuration, the Ethernet card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
o Verify that Built-in Ethernet is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Advanced > TCP/IP tab
o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
o Configure IPv6: Off
Advanced > DNS tab
o Verify that your ISP's DNS server(s) appear. If they do not, click "+" add them.
Advanced > Proxies tab
o Configure Proxies: Manually
o Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
o Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
o Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
o Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

Setup Time Capsule as wireless device and Time Machine with Ethernet?

I'm running the latest version of Airport Utility (6.3.4) with a TC a1254 and Macbook Pro platinum late 2007.
I have a modem/router Ryge model Wa41r.
Ive tried everything I could find in the forums and in expert pages and can't configure my Time Capsule as a Wireless Device connected to the modem/router and Time Machine with Ethernet Cable.
I tried letting it configure itself, it held the wifi signal for over 5 min then turned off. Never that way worked again.
Then I configured with other examples seen in Apple communities and expert Apple pages, but it conflicted with my routers signal. I turned off the Wireless Lan Interface and it turned off the Ethernet cable with the connection as well. I tried giving my TC different IP address.
So my Time Capsule gives me this status in flicking amber: Internet connection and Conflicting DCHP Range. (when I connect to my Mac the Internet works)
And strangely the wireless signal appears in my Macbook but not in my Android Phone.
Works fine doing backups when asked via ethernet.
Also when I go to check on it on Airport Utility in other wifi devices it appears but says "Device Not Found - device name- was previously part of your network. Check that is still in range...etc"

I would like to help you but you need to clear up some things..
A Time Capsule is plugged into the network by ethernet.. you back up to it using wireless or ethernet.. it should make no difference which.

I cannot understand.. The Time Capsule plugs into the main modem router.. and should be in bridge mode..
Time Machine is not hardware.. it is the backup software on the computer.. there is no way you can connect Time Machine with ethernet cable. .you can connect the computer with Ethernet Cable..
But you need to clarify please.
If you wish to connect TC to the Modem router by wireless this is not possible. It must connect by ethernet.
You can connect your computer to it using either wireless or ethernet.

It is likely the wireless name is not valid.
Make sure all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. 2-20 characters.. Do not use the Apple recommended names.. they can be totally wrong.
Also the password for wireless should be 8-20 characters but same rules.. pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.
Start again.
Factory reset the TC.
Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Plug it into the main router by ethernet.
Do the setup via the airport utility in a Mac or iOS device.
Follow the setup instructions above.
Then you can connect to the TC LAN ports by ethernet or use wireless on the computer.
Your modem WA41R. I cannot find details in English . .they are all Spanish so we may be having difficulty of language here.
But if the modem is working as router the TC has to be in bridge mode.. it will not work properly in router mode.
So you should see it set as bridge here.

Can Time Capsule handle ethernet & wireless connection simultaneously??

I have recently purchased a Time Capsule and managed successfully to set it up, doing the initial back-up over ethernet. I already use a BT router in another part of the home to provide internet access, there is also another imac in use in the same home. My problem is that I would prefer to keep the ethernet connection to my own imac for the purposes of speedier backing up (I do a lot of music work) but this seems to disconnect the wireless capacity of the Time Capsule meaning the other imac in the house cannot see it. If I make the connection to my imac wirelessly (so that the other imac can see it too) then backup seems to take an age. Hence my question is can I still use the ethernet connection to my imac and still have the Time Capsule accessible wirelessly to the other imac??
Any advice will most welcome.

Ok, the set-up is basically this.
1. A wireless modem/ router delivering internet access.
2. Time Capsule has joined the network offered by this router.
3. My imac is connected to Time Capsule via ethernet.
4. Second imac connected to the network via airport but not seeing the Time Capsule specifically. What it does see (under 'shared') rather confusingly is 3 different areas. The first calls itself 'mac' and then a code. The second appears as 'Nicholas's imac' and the third just as my name. The first two say it is connected as a guest and the second always says 'connection failed' even though i'm not sure what it is. Furthermore even where it appears to be connected as a guest I cannot see any access to Time Capsule.
BUT.....
if I connect my imac to the Time Capsule wirelessly via Airport then the second imac can see the Time Capsule and access it easily. This would be fine but it does mean that my imac (the main one) has lost it's faster back-up times. I also don't really want to go down the route of file sharing since this would mean both imacs would have to be on just for the second one to see the Time Capsule.
So as I say - I just want to achieve a connection from my main imac via ethernet while still having easy access for the second imac to Time Capsule wirelessly without the first imac necessarily needing to be on.

How can I use my time capsule with Ethernet cable? How is it also possible to use time capsule as a normal external hard drive?

My problem is that I don't know how to use my Time Capsule with Ethernet Cable, as when I use wireless it is really slow.

Make sure that there is an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/wireless router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule
Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the page
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off (I assume that you do not want the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network since you already have a wireless network)
Next, click the Internet icon at the top of the screen, then click the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the bottom and wait 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart and display a green light
Then, you must power off your entire network...all devices....in any order that you want
Wait a minute
Start your modem/router first and let it run a minute
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered up
If you are using Time Machine for backups, you will need to reset the connection because you have changed the way in which the Time Capsule connects to your network
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
Open Time Machine
Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backup or, it might be Use Disk
Now you can connect your Mac using an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to back up using Ethernet. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your Mac before you start the backup.
If you want to backup using wireless, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule and turn on the wireless and connect to your wireless network. Your computer will now backup using wireless.

Connecting Airport Extreme N to Time Capsule via ethernet to extend wireles

Hi, I currently have 2 Airport Extreme N and a Time capsule and would like to connect all three together. I am planning to use the time Capsule as the router and then use the other airport extreme to extend the wireless network. I am planning to have ethernet connection between the three devices ie Airport extreme N (A) is connected to time capsule via ethernet and airport extreme N (B) is connected to time capsule via another ethernet.
I have tried the Extend Wireless network option to connect them, but that seems to generate so much traffic between the airport extreme N and the time capsule that the network is not usable. I have also tried using WDS but that didn't seem to work.
The three wireless networks have some areas of overlap but the signal is weak which is why i prefer to link them up with ethernet.
What is the best wall to configure them? should I set them up so that they're each creating a wireless network but with the same name? Or is there a better solution? Thanks!

It seems to me the easiest way is to have the Airport Extreme connect to internet using Ethernet, using DHCP and the Connection sharing in off (bridge mode) and then create a new wireless network with the same name... Is that correct? I have previously ran the apple wizard and it did something weird with the network and then both the time capsule and the airport extreme are serving out IP address and both of them have the same IP address 10.0.1.1. which then messes up everything...

I'm not certain the post I sent was posted correctly, as I added it as a reply to a 3-year old thread. Since this is a recently-active thread, though not specific to the issue at hand, I thought I'd post again:
Three years ago you helped me set up a roaming wireless network in my home. It's been rock-steady and I'm forever grateful to you for the time and guidance you gave me. I'd now like to swap out my AirPort Extreme base station for a time capsule. As I understand it, I should be able to unplug the base station and replace it with the TC without problem, so long as I use all the same settings on my TC... network name, security protocol, password, etc. Given the complexity of my network, I thought I should check with you first for any advice you might have. I don't want to set up a new network or make any changes to the existing one-- with the exception of using the TC in place of the AE. I'm already using Time Machine for backups. As a refresher, my current setup has the AE as base station and 3 expresses hard-wired with Ethernet connections elsewhere in my home. I have a 4th express set up wirelessly to use with my stereo system at the front of the house. All AXs are 'n's and are set up, as per your instructions, in Bridge mode to extend the existing network. I'm running the most updated version of Mavericks on my MBPro. How is the TC connected to the main router? Is it the main router?
Descirbe the whole network and how the TC fits in.
Do not test with both wireless and ethernet at the same time.
Test from up close.
Test using 5ghz for wireless within the same room.
Give us numbers.. we cannot work with slow.. sorry but the issue can be your expections as much as the network.
Is it slow copying files to the TC pick a single large file and try. Or to another computer on the network??
Is it just internet?

Where you bought the devices is unlikely to stop them working together with one possible exception. In the USA wifi channels are restricted to channels 1 through 11, whereas in the UK (for example) wifi channels 1 through 13 can be used, so there exists the possibility that the extreme could be transmitting on (say) channel 13 and the tv might only be listening on channels 1 through 11.
Given you bought the extreme in the US and the tv in Europe I doubt this would apply unless you have fiddled with the location settings on these devices. I could see it being a possible issue if you'd bought the extreme in Europe and the tv in the US.

Does ios 5 sync podcasts wirelessly?

So I get that ios5 syncs a song or app if I buy one in iTunes on my Mac. However, if a new podcast comes out, is my iPhone supposed to sync those wirelessly every night?what if it's not working?

I've answered my own question. It seems that we need to have iCloud functional and if using a PC to install the iCloud control panel and use at least Vista and at least Outlook 2007 to share tasks with the iPad. I've done the downloads and made the transfers but it is not registering yet as used up space in iCloud. But it seems that iTunes is not the Pipe that I thought it would be for this.
I activated iCloud on my iPad. When I tried to register my new control panel on my PC several minutes later, it did not recognize my account. Then about two minutes later it did. It seems that it takes time from the original registration to be fully operable. So be patient.

Wireless and Ethernet connection for U330 not working - Help

I need help with my wireless and ethernet connection for the U330 notebook. I can not connect to the internet since I received my U330 and if I try to connect to a wireless router, it knocks other users off. I called customer service already and they asked me to download the driver on the Lenovo Downloads and Drivers page. The page can not be found when you try to download the drive so I was not sure if there is another place I can download it since customer service mentioned that they will send me a disk which will take some time. Your router may be knocking you due to lots of facts. Those Ensteins suggested drivers reinstall because that's the only thing they know.
Try changing your encryption mode, try adding your laptop's WiFi MAC-adress of whitelist of Route, try disabling firewall, try increase strength of signal.
Driver is located at consumersupport.lenovo.com - do not hesitate to check.

my current network goes like this..........
cable modem to airport express.
airport express to the g5, powerbook, printer, airtunes.
everything works.
i just bought a sgi fuel that i would like to have a connection to.
so i bought a smc switcher (8505t)....
now the cable modem goes into the switcher.
g5 into the switcher.
airport express into the switcher.
sgi into the switcher.
in the network prefs, i then have to change from airport to ethernet. so i reset the modem (at comcast's direction) and choose ethernet. now the mac and sgi can talk. internet works, but not for the powerbook.
i guess my question is can airport express do both wireless and ethernet at the same time? or do i need something else?

The ISP provides one IP address. Whichever device connected to the switch gets that IP address first will be allowed to connect to the internet. None of the other devices connected to the switch will be allowed to connect to the internet.
You need a router to use the single IP address provided by the IP address and then create multiple local IP addresses. The AX is a router but the single Ethernet port prevents it from sharing any local IP addresses with Ethernet clients. If the AX did allow that (as the original 802.11b graphite AirPort base station did) it would conflict with the ISP's DHCP server and draw the ire of the ISP.
