Sync to a new computer...restore from iCloud backup?

I have been trying to find the answer to this specific question, but haven't been able to.  I know this is a question that has been asked a lot, so I apologize in advance.  I am wanting to change the computer I sync my iPhone to.  I have read that when you sync to a new computer, you lose all of your data.
My question is, can you use your backup from iCloud to recover that data?  I'm not worried about the music, I have copies on my desktop.  I am mostly worried about my photos and contacts.  I have over 700 pictures and I really don't want to email them all to myself to be sure I keep them.
Would it be easier to reset my phone to factory settings and then use the iCloud backup to restore my info?  Then can I sync it to my desktop with no problems?
My laptop, which I sync to now, is still able to be used.  It's just getting older and I would rather use my desktop to sync from now on.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks!

I've seen that, but that doesn't really help.  I really don't want to restore from my other iTunes folder.   I want to start over on my desktop.  I went through my music on my desktop and I have it set up how I want it.  I just don't want to lose my info.  Plus, I don't have Windows Address Book or Outlook on my computer.
This is my question:
All of my music is on my desktop, which I want to start syncing with.  I backed up my phone on iCloud today. Can I just restore my phone and then retrieve the backup from iCloud?  All of my data (contacts, apps, notes, etc) will be on there, right?  I don't care about the music...I will add that back.  I just don't want to lose my contacts.
If I do restore from iCloud, can I then start syncing with my desktop as if I never synced with my laptop?

  • New iPhone restore from iCloud backup then sync from computer

    Hello
I am getting a new iPhone 6 tomorrow (fingers crossed delivery is ok).
I back-up my current iPhone using iCloud and use iTunes match for music but I am getting a 128GB new iPhone so intend putting all my music on that new iPhone.
What I want to do is use the iCloud restore function to have my new iPhone take on the same settings and app data etc as my current iPhone (which is backed up through iCloud) but then sync all my music from my iMac. It appears that when I plug in a phone to my iMac for the first time iTunes won't let me sync without first either setting the phone up as new or restoring the phone from a iTunes back-up (not an iCloud back-up). Is there anyway to get around this?
I hope that is clear, it sounds convoluted when I read it back.
PS additional question for extra credit. Do I need to update my current iPhone to iOS 8 before running a back-up to allow a restore to work on a new iPhone 6 (which will be running iOS 8)?

If it were me, I would setup your iPhone as a new phone. You will be asked during the setup to enter your Apple ID and password so you can log into iCloud. As long as you have been using iCloud for your Contacts, Notes, Reminders, etc. once your phone is setup iCloud will sync your Contacts, Notes, Reminders, etc. I think you will also be prompted to setup your email account(s).
I think iPad iCloud back ups are different than iPhone and you can't restore an iPad back up to an iPhone and visa versa. I'm not 100% sure since I don't own an iPad.

  • After syncing my ipod touch with a new computer, will an icloud backup restore my app data including game progress?

I have an ipod touch which I have USB synced in the past on my Windows Vista laptop.
Now I want to stop USB Syncing with the laptop and USB start syncing instead with my Windows 7 Desktop machine instead.
Both PCs have the latest version of itunes running and I have transferred all purchases from the ipod to the Windows 7 desktop machine.
Home sharing is turned on on both PCs, so now their libraries appear identical.
The ipod has the latest IOS installed, and I have set up automatic icloud back ups for the ipod.
If i USB sync the ipod with the windows 7 desktop PC it warns me that all data will be erased, and replaced with data from that computer. I know that this will mean that all game progress is lost since it is not included in a USB sync backup and virgin copies of all the apps will be loaded onto the ipod.
    My Question is this;
What is the best way to keep the app data intact on the ipod?
Do I simply carry out a USB sync with the Windows 7 desktop PC, let it wipe all the game save info away, and then resore an icloud backup onto the ipod?
Will this result in me being able to sync with the Windows 7 desktop PC and keep my game save data intact?
    Thanks

    Two ways.
    - You can sync with the new computer by following these instructions
Sync Your iOS Device with a New Computer Without Losing Data - How-To Geek
All the apps have to be in the iTunes library so the app data will have a place to go.
    - Or just restore from iCloud backup. That will also pull down the apps from iCloud. Your apps data will also be restored.

  • New phone still restoring from iCloud backup

i have purchased a 5s four days ago, it's stating still restoring  from iCloud backup.
my old phone 4s I backed up to cloud wifi and launched new phone data through wifi as have no computer.  it won't let me access any apps or iTunes or complete iOS 8.3 until this is completed. Help please.

I finally got mine to work. I let the iphone run its course and it finally restored everything. I wanted to make sure I got everything back, but it didn't sync my non itunes purchased music, so I had to manually do that via the computer. By my estimates it took almost 80 hours, minus 20 of those spent at work and odd hours here and there when I wasn't connected to wifi. So about 50ish
It is frustrating though that it took so long. Apple needs to come up with a better solution in the future. I thought this problem was solved last year with the problems that plagued the ios7 update. It will probably only get worse since iCloud storage just got upped for everyone.

  • HT4859 I forgot to click Restore from iCloud Backup on new Device.

I forgot to click Restore from iCloud Backup on new Device, and then signed in on the Cloud with the same Apple ID I used to create the Cloud on my old iPhone.  Can i still access my CLoud backup for apps, photos, etc.?

You'll have to start over by going to Settings>General>Reset and tapping Erase All Content and Settings.  Then go back through the setup screens again and this time choose Restore from iCloud backup (see image below).  Note: your iCloud account and iCloud data will still be in your account and will be synced back to your device when you sign back in.  You also may want to connect your device to your charger as restoring from backup can take some time to complete.

I had a new handset delivered today due to my old one being damaged. As I went to restore from iCloud backup it is telling me I can't due to the handset not having iOS 7.1. How can I resolve this issue?
Could I select 'Set up as New IPhone' and then update to iOS 7.1 and then proceed to restore the phone from my most recent iCloud  backup ?
Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated.

    Hi again razmee209!
It has been updating since your last message and it says there's another 6 hours to go, does this sound right or is there a possibility I've been sent a re-con and the update will slow down my new handset considerably?!

  • I had my iPad 2 replaced by Apple today. All my backup was iCloud and so proceeded to restore from iCloud backup point but couldn't proceed as the new iPad needed iOS 7. How can I get I get around this?

I had my iPad 2 replaced by Applestore today. On the new iPad I tried to restore from iCloud backup point but was told I was unable to do this as the new iPad needed to have the latest running system iOS 7 loaded. Is there a way I can do this so I can get my iCloud backup or do I need to go back to Applestore and get an iPad preloaded with iOS 7?

If you feel comfortable you can do the Update to iOS 7 yourself and after you have successfully done that... then Restore your iCloud Back Up.
If you are not comfortable in doing it yourself... Then go back to the Apple Store and get them to do it.
They will be Happy to assist you.

  • Trying to restore from icloud backup to new phone

I have just bought a new phone as old one was damaged.  I am trying to restore from icloud backup.  when it asks for a rescue email address it won't accept the address I am submitting even though it is not any of the addresses that are already registered with icloud as apple id, alternate or rescue emails.  this has happened with two different email addresses now, neither of which icloud have a previous record of.  not sure what to do now!

You actually have to go through extra steps of setting up your phone as new, updating and then erasing and restoring from that back up.

    Hello, Anita.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are wanting to restore your new iPhone 6 from an iPhone 5 backup.  This sounds like the iOS version of your old iPhone 5 may be newer than what was installed on your iPhone 6.  Try going through the steps in the article below.
iOS: Unable to restore from backup of a newer device
I would also check to see the backup dates in iTunes and if the  backup is located on iCloud instead of iTunes.

  • My new iphone 6 plus has been restoring from iCloud backup for days.  I do not have all my apps or music yet

my new iphone 6 plus has been restoring from iCloud backup for days.  I do not have all my apps or music yet.  How do I fix it?

    Hello Bernharp,
Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPhone 6 Plus is taking a long time to restore from an iCloud backup. I can understand why you'd be concerned after several days of waiting.
This might happen if your backup contains a lot of content such as pictures or your Wi-Fi connection isn't consistent.
If the restore still hasn't completed, take a look at the information in the "Restoring my device from an iCloud backup is taking a long time" and "A message says restore incomplete or some items could not be restored" sections of this Support article:

  • My phone has said its 'restoring from iCloud backup' for 2 days

I received my brand new iPhone 6 two days ago.
When I fired up the phone, I restored from iCloud back up that I did about 10 minutes before hand to make sure it was up-to-date.
Two days have passed, and my phone STILL says its restoring from iCloud backup yet everything is on the phone as far as I'm aware.
I have plugged it into my mac and synced to iTunes, yet its still displaying this message!
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

If you still have your old phone, back it up to your computer using iTunes (connect it, open iTunes, go to File>Devices>Back Up and choose to back up apps and transfer purchased if prompted).  Then stop the iCloud restore (Settings>iCloud>Backup>Stop Restoring...hopefully you can still do this in iOS 8) and restore the backup on your computer (connect your new phone, open iTunes, go to File>Devices>Restore from Backup).
Be sure to save any new data you may have (such as new photos) before restoring the backup again.

  • Iphone 6 been restoring from icloud backup for 9 days and still not finished?

I got my iPhone 6 on the 19th when it came out.  It's an ATT 128 gb model.  I started restoring from icloud backup on that Friday (9 days ago).  It still is saying it's restoring from backup. Daily it's asking me to delete the data or keep downloading.  This phone is for my business, so the info is very important.  I am also worried that all the things in the last week have yet to be backed up since then, because I can't back it up till the restore is complete. I also can't do the new software update 8.0.2.  I am on a fast WIFI nearly 18+ hours a day and I can surf the net just fine, but why is my restore from 9 days ago still not finished?

    Apple:
This needs to get improved. I had the exact same issue migrating my 5 and wife's 5S previously. It's never worked well. We need status bars, and indications of what has been copied, what remains to be copied, and ways to resume it and pause it without hoping it works and getting messages in the morning asking if you want to resume it, making you wonder if anything actually occurred overnight. The message doesn't pop up within 10 minutes of connecting to power and wi-fi so I have no idea how long it actually takes to come up.
It's unacceptable to think any device owner wants to roll the dice and hope they have all their data. We use these devices for our jobs and that data is critical for some of us. It's not all just pictures of the dog! Even though those are critical, too!! It would be different if this wasn't a known issue and the resolution wasn't so easy...get this fixed!!!
