Sync User Folder

hello all:
i have multiple computers like most of you (one @ work, one @ home, laptop, etc...) and i just purchased a 500 GB firewire drive and what i want to do is sync all of my home folders so they are all duplicates.
right now i am at work copying my entire User folder to the firewire drive. my question is, am i going to be OK just running Synchronize Pro when i get to my laptop or any other computer to sync the entire home directory or will i run into problems? all computers are running the latest updates so they all have the same version of software 10.4.5 on them.
thanks in advance for your help!
john.

finally i found some information...
(but i have not done the experiment)
in the cmdlet New-SyncShare there is a parameter for spec the -UserFolderName<String>
article: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn296635.aspx
as specify in the Deploy Folder procedure: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn528861.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
On the Specify the structure for user folders page, choose a naming convention for user folders within the sync share. There are two options available:
User alias creates user folders that don’t include a domain name. If you are using a file share that is already in use with Folder Redirection or another user data solution, select this naming convention. You can optionally select the
Sync only the following subfolder checkbox to sync only a specific subfolder, such as the Documents folder.
User alias@domain creates user folders that include a domain name. If you aren’t using a file share already in use with Folder Redirection or another user data solution, select this naming convention to eliminate folder naming conflicts
when multiple users of the share have identical aliases (which can happen if the users belong to different domains).
But in the Set-SyncShare cmdlet there is no way to modify this parameter, so i think that in the question there are only wrong answers.... (i'm preparing for the exam 412 too)
please, Microsoft could verify and let us know? (at least one year after the first question...) :)

  • Sync a folder between two users on the same computer.

I would like to sync a folder between two users on the same computer so that they are always the same when I access them from either user.

then place this folder somewhere where both users have access to like in /Users/Shared. then there is only one folder to deal with and you don't need to sync anything.

  • Is it possible to sync a folder from another drive?

i have a imac with a partitioned drive for pro tools and wondered is it possible to set portable home directories to sync a folder on that drive as well as the standard user documents library?

It is easy to create the link. I've not made it back to the lab so this is untested.
Here is the scenario. Let's say you have your boot volume and a data drive (/Volumes/data) for video content. The user's home folder is in the standard location (/Users/myhome) but the user has data on the second drive that you want to backup in /Volumes/data/Projects. Using a symbolic link, you can create a pointer in the home folder that links to the Projects folder on the second drive. For example, try this through the Terminal application:
    ln -s /Volumes/data/Projects ~/Projects
The syntax is: (ln) link command, (-s) create symbolic link, (/Volumes/data/Projects) the real file/folder that you want to link to, (~/Projects) the name and location of the symbolic link - does not need to be named the same as the target file/folder - the ~/ is shorthand for the root of your home folder.
Once created, you will see what looks like an alias in the Finder. If you double click the symbolic link ~/Projects, the Finder will send you to the Projects folder on the second drive.
Again, I've been meaning to test this but I will not get to the office till Friday at the earliest. Give it a shot. It can not hurt.
    Hope this helps

  • Sync "Pictures" folder I mean the main folder content and not its subfolder

I really search here and all over the internet with no success...
That SIMPLE thing I want to do is to sync "pictures" folder with my iphone. iTunes only lets me sync its subfolders but not the images at the main pictures folder itself. This is driving me crazy because if I select to sync my user folder, and then select "pictures" as a subfolder, then it says "0 images" and nothing is sync'd...
    Please? Any idea? Thank you

It has always been this way.  it was never different.  This is how the iphone handles photos - always has.
There are NOT two copies,  There are simply two ways to access the very same photos.  All synced photos will ALWAYS be under Photo Library ( you can look at all photos at once this way or do a slideshow of all photos).  Those very same photos can also be accessed from the individual folders so you can show or slideshow just that folder.
Just as a book can be in the library and in the fiction section, there is only one book/photo.

  • Centro User Folder

Need to know if there is anyway possible way to recover or restore a user after it was removed from Palm Desktop was helping someone and they didn't want me to have the address book so I removed the user then when we turned on the phone the address book was blank guess what no user folder looked in Recycle Bin no folder any chance of a it being in a temp folder somewhere on my computer? searched for .DAT files no luck and .BAK file also I think it is gone but wanted to ask
    Post relates to: Palm TX

If you deleted the user in Palm desktop it is more than likely gone. Have you tried to do a system restore on the PC to revert back to a previous backup of Windows? Here is a link to show where the user folders are located on the PC. See if the folder is possibley in those locations.
Click on the following link to the kb.palm.com webpage for the article regarding Find your device's User Folder on your desktop computer.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=26674
You can recover the data from your user folder provided you have only sync'ed once with the PC when you discovered the data missing. When you sync to the PC there are files created for each PIM category in your user folder. For Example; datebook.dat or datebook (Depending on the version of Palm Desktop) and datebook.bak. On Vista the file names are .mdb and mdb.bak.
The files are named .dat and .bak. When you sync, the current data is stored in .dat. The next time you sync the data in the .dat file is copied to the .bak file. You can rename the .dat to .old. then rename the .bak to .dat. If the data in the .bak file is intact, it will now be in palm desktop when you reopen Palm desktop. I have included a link to show you how to find the userfolder on the PC.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=26674
    Here is another link regarding data loss;
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=39503
The best way to backup your data is to use the export feature in Palm Desktop. Make a new folder on the PC desktop named Palm Desktop Backup data. Next, select the category you want to export. You will get a window that asks where you want to save the file, save in the folder created on the desktop. There is a button that allows you to select currently selected record or all, select all. If you don't select all, then only the record highlighted is exported. You will then need to name the file for export, I suggest the name of the category, eg: datebook (With current date). Do this for all critical data in each category. With the data exported to the folder on the PC desktop, you can save this data to a flash drive, external hard drive or a CD-RW. With this method you will have your data in a seperate place than Palm desktop and the device. If you "Lose" data again, you can import the data back into palm desktop.
Make sure that when you make changes in palm desktop or the device to export the data to the folder created for the backup.
    Here is a link for other options for backing up your data;

  • Can No Longer See User Folder in Intrnl Drive after transferring to Ext Drv

I'm trying very hard not to freak out right now, but I can no longer see my User Folder/Home in the Finder Bar after dragging and dropping it into the my newly formatted Seagate External Drive. I have OS 10.4.11 and am trying to install Snow Leopard, but before I do I wanted to back-up my hard drive. So I plugged in the Seagate, formated it for Macs, and then dragged and dropped he User Folder into the Seagate and now it is gone!
Would greatly appreciate advice on how to find the User Folder so I can return it to the Internal Drive AND help on how to properly copy it to the Seagate External Drive as I have been unsuccessful.
    Many thanks!

Not really. I previously tried that already. I added Chinese (Taiwan) and moved up pre-existing English as the phone language. Also set navigation voice in Here Drive+ to Chinese. Result:
    1. Street names still shows in English (it goes with phone language obviously), like "Da Xing Rd." However, some landmarks will show in both languages.
    2. Navigation voice is in Chinese but all the street names are announced in English, so e.g. "Da Xing Rd." is announced as "Da-Sing-R-D". ("St." will be announced as "S-T"...) (This is the same as in WP8)
    Thank you.

  • How do I remove "other users" folder in mail and on my iPhone

On one account only I have "other users" folder that lists all of the folders of every user on the server. On my iphone I have to scroll past pages of other user folders to get to any folder named with anything after "O"
Does anyone know how to get the server to stop showing "other users" in both mail and iphone mail?

Unfortunately that is really the only work around since
Comcast uses POP3 and not IMAP like Gmail or
    iCloud.
I had received an email quite some time ago that they
were beta testing IMAP with select customers but I doubt
if it has gone much further than that.

  • How best to move user folder to a Mac Mini + external drive

I am streamlining my desktop computer setup. Whereas before I was using a PowerMac G5 as my primary desktop computer, I realize I am using my MacBook Pro more often, so in the interests of conserving space, I will be switching over to a Mac Mini connected to my AV system for hosting all my iTunes music, videos, media, photos, etc.
Here is where I need advice. My PowerMac has a lot more media on it than can fit on the internal hard drive of a Mac Mini. I have already secured a 1 TB external drive which will be permanently connected to the Mac Mini, but I am unsure as to how to best go about copying my data to it.
My initial thought was that I could move the iTunes music folder to the external drive using the library consolidation feature, and I could copy my iPhoto library to it, then point the respective applications to the new location. However, I want the external to act as my home folder where the OS looks for all my personal data, including movies, documents, etc.
I know there is a procedure for changing your home folder's location to an external drive, but because of the limited size of the Mac Mini's internal HD, I would like to use migration assistant when I first start using the Mac Mini. Should I hold off on moving the home folder until after I have migrated, or can it be done beforehand?
Anyone have any thoughts or ideas? Thanks!

Thanks for the procedure. It seems very easy, but I am wondering about the consequences depending on when I do it. For example, let's say I first copy my entire home folder to the 1 TB external drive, set up the PowerMac to use it as my home folder, then use migration assistant to import my user accounts, applications, and settings onto the Mac Mini. Will it try to extract the data from the external drive onto the Mac Mini's internal drive? There won't be enough room for everything.
As an alternative, I can move my iTunes library and iPhoto library onto the 1 TB external first, keeping the rest of my user data in its original location. Then it can fit on the Mac Mini, and I can do the migration, then move the home folder to the 1TB external once it's all up and running on the new computer.
    Which will work best?
I had heard about people using a single drive as their home folder across multiple computers, but that is not the case for me. My MacBook Pro will become my primary computer, but I intend to keep it clear of media, whereas the MacMini will become my media server for my AV system in my living room. The 1 TB will be constantly connected to the Mac Mini, so there shouldnt be a problem with starting it up once the user folder location has been moved.

I saved my "users" folder to an external HD. I did erase and install on my imac. Now how do i get the accounts to open up on the fresh installation?

To move a home folder, create a new home folder, copy the contents of the old home folder into the new home folder, and then delete the old home folder.  Take a look at this link, http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/UserMgmt_v10.6.pdf

  • How do I move my user folder back to my main drive

A while back, I bought a 265 GB SSD. It was too small to accommodate both the system and my user folder so I moved the user folder to another drive.
Now that SSD prices have come down, I have purchased a larger SSD. I want to add this drive, install Mavericks and then pull my user folder back to it.
What I am thinking I can do, but would like input, is the following:
First, this is a Mac Pro so the old SSD, the new SSD, and HD containing my User Folder are all inside.
    1. Install Mavericks on the new SSD and create an account with the same name as the existing one. (This should create a new, relatively empty user folder on the new SSD).
    2. Use Advance User settings to point to the current user folder on the HD and reboot.
    3. Drag contents of the User folder from the HD into the New user folder on the new SSD.
    4. Use Advance User settings to point to the new User folder on the New SSD and reboot.
Does anyone see any problems with this? Any assistance is appreciated.

If you create another user on your new drive, then drag your old user to the Users folder, then create amother user with the same name, then it should ask if you want to use the current folder.

How do I resurrect the functionality of the "ghost" folder icons in the left-most column?
