Sync via cable versus over the air

when travelling outside USA (Vancouver BC Canada) have "Airplane Mode" turned ON and Data-Roaming OFF
- but have laptop (Mac Book Air) - how to 'force' a 'sync' using cable when iPhone 'apps' and iTunes think I'm syncing 'over the air'?

POP (post-office protocol) is only for email retrieval (and SMTP, simple message transfer protocol, for sending).
If you want to sync calendar/contacts, then it is done over SyncML (synchronization markup language).
Also "proprietary" synchronization protocols, like Microsoft's ActiveSync allows message/contacts/calendar/tasks synchronization.
Nokia supports ActiveSync over-the-air through the Mail for Exchange software.

  • Your contacts are being synced with your iPad over the air from iCloud

tl;dr: iPhone works properly with iTunes 11.1 and iPad does not. Can't sync with both iTunes and iCloud to separate, distinct Calendar/Contact/Notes groups.
    Explanation:
Ever since iTunes 11 was released (I'm on 11.1 now) I'm unable to sync Contacts, Calendars, and Notes via iTunes because I'm using over the air syncing from iCloud. As late as iTunes 10.7, this was okay, because "On My PC" groups would sync perfectly with iTunes, and iCloud groups would sync perfectly with iCloud.
In fact, this still works, today, but only on my iPhones.
However on the iPad I get the message "Your contacts are being synced with your iPad over the air from iCloud." (Well, yeah, I know that. My iCloud contacts should continue to sync via iCloud. I don't want to turn off this behavior.)
The "workaround" used to be sticking to iTunes 10.7, which had correct behavior for both iPad and iPhone. Of course iOS7 nuked that option.
Is anyone aware of another workaround? (Merging my professional Outlook stuff into my iCloud stuff is not a workaround.)

I can place a bounty. $20 USD to your Paypal account for a fix.

  • What does it mean, in iTunes, "your contacts are being synced with Microsoft Exchange over the air"?

    Hello,
I'm trying to sync the contacts on my iPhone 5 with my contacts on my Mac Book Air (merge them), I'm also using Outlook (Microsoft) to manage my email account and my contacts.  I used to sync my contacts from my previous iPhone (4S) with my contacts on my Mac and also with contacts on Outlook.
Now that I have iPhone 5 I missed that sync (iPhone-Mac-Outlook), so I figure it out that in iTunes there is this message: "your contacts are being synced with Microsoft Exchange over the air. Your contacts will also sync directly with this computer. This may result in duplicated data showing on your device"
Every contact created on iPhone doesn't sync with my Mac or Outlook.
How should I configure my iphone and my mac to sync properly??
    Thanks a lot!
    Kind Regards,

Not surprisingly there have been no answers to this question because the only person who knows how to use iTunes/iCloud/iPhone is too busy.

  • Can you sync calendar and contacts over the air to...

I'm considering getting an E71 or E63, but apart from email I really want to be able to sync calendar (and contacts)over the air, not just from to/from Outlook on my PC - is this possible ? It's not really explained clearly in any of the specs and doco I've been reading.
Also, if I receive a calendar invitation as email, will it appear on the Nokia and can I accept it, and is it written to the calendar locally and at the POP server, or is this kind of behaviour only supported by Windows Mobile devices?

POP (post-office protocol) is only for email retrieval (and SMTP, simple message transfer protocol, for sending).

  • Sync iPhone over the air?

    Hey everyone,
iPhone n00b here. Does anyone know if it is possible to sync the iphone over the air either via 802.11 or Bluetooth?
I don't want to have to plug it into my laptop every night.
    Cheers

What are you trying to sync? And where does that content reside.
If you are sycning email, contacts, and calendars, then you can sync with Mobile Me "over the air."
If you want to sync music, podcasts or otner content stored in iTunes, then your computer that hosts iTunes must be turned on. WFI can be uused to connect but the compute must be running.

  • New iPhone 5 syncs contacts to Microsoft Exchange over the air?

Just got a new iPhone 5. It's not syncing my contacts. I've tried everything I can find here. However, there's this one little difference. In iTunes, I'm being told that my contacts are being synced with Microsoft Exchange over the air. ***? I don't have Microsoft anything on my comptuer!
This is a new iPhone 5. I've imported all my contacts from my previous phone which has never been synced with anything. (Syncing didn't exist when I bought the phone.) I've switched all of the contanct information on, and ... nothing. I've tried syncing via iTunes. I've tried sycning via iCloud.
Any new additions I make will sync via icloud (or iTunes), but none of the old contact information will sync to my comptuer. I know it has something to do with the "syncing with Micorsoft Exchange" message, but I have no idea how or why it defaulted to that setting. How do I change it? How do I get my contacts to sync from my phone to my computer?
    Thanks.

    randers4,
Thank you for your reply. Strangely, the offending email account was the account set up at the store (not Apple store) for an iTunes account. I have no idea why they would have turned on the exchange sync in the fisrt place.
I now know how to turn off the exchange sync. However, I'm not given the option of keeping the contacts on my iPhone if I switch it off. It will delete all of my contacts. Is there a way to avoid this? I'm sure I read something in the discussions here, can you point me back in the right direction? The same thing is going to happen wiith my emails. Unfortunately, I have dozens of emails already...
    Again, thanks for your help.

  • How can I turn off over the air sync settings on my Mac iPhone

    Hi,
For some reason I am attempting to sync my iPhone with my laptop as usual but now in the iTunes app when I attach my iPhone and go to Info, it reads: Your contacts are being synced with your iPhone over the air from MobileMe. Over the air sync settings can be changed on your iPhone. So here is the thing, I have looked online and have found nothing at all to show me how to do this on my iPhone. I want to be able to add info on my iPhone and then connect it with my laptop and sync it immediately with my laptop and also to add info on my laptop and immediately sync it with my iPhone. Please help. Thanks

On your iPhone go to Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Then select your MobileMe account. Turn off the items you don't want synced over the air.

  • Over the air sync can be changed on your iPhone

iTunes says that "Your contacts are being synced with your iPhone over the air from MobileMe.
Over-the-air sync settings can be changed on your iPhone".
How do I change that so I can sync my contacts with Windows Contacts? When I tried to sync with MobileMe I lost all of my contacts and I want to get them back on my iPhone.

    Hi,
I did the same thing deleted my email account and recreated it, went with the same settings and same issues.
I certainly am not a Mac or iPhone expert, but I can tell you what happened to me then. I obviously had the same issue with "over air sync can be changed on your iphone" and my contacts had been wiped out. I was concerned as I had lost all my contacts off the iphone however my mobileme account had all of the contacts there. I found that all I had to do was give it some time to really sync between mobileme and the iphone contacts. I was being too impatient expecting them to appear instantly once I agreed to the sync with mobileme. I left it for a few hours and the contacts finally syncd.
    Hope this helps

  • Over-the-air sync settings

iTunes says that bookmarks are being synced with my iPhone over the air from MobileMe. I only have MobileMe for my computer and not for my phone. Would this be the reason that I cannot find the over-the-air sync settings on my phone and also why they do not match the bookmarks that I have set on my computer? If that is the case, how can I manually set the bookmarks on my phone to match?

I only have MobileMe for my computer and not for my phone.
If you have MobileMe, it is for any and all computers/devices that you have set it up for.
Have you enabled Bookmark syncing in:
    Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > {Your MobileMe Account Name} > Bookmarks
BTW, the *MobileMe Sync* forums are here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1264

  • Upgraded to iTunes 11...now insists on syncing contacts/calendars 'over-the-air' but can't change settings

Upgraded to iTunes 11, at which time it decided it was better for me to sync my calendar/contacts "over-the-air" from iCloud (when I never had this activated before).  Now it says "your contacts are being synced with your iPhone over the air from iCloud" (which is not true...it doesn't work and changes in one place are not made in another - same goes for calendars).  Also states "Over-the-air sync settings can be changed on your iPhone" (likewise not true...I've got them deactivated in my iPhone and still doesn't work).
Not sure why Apple thought they should go ahead and change my preferences that were setup to go to iCloud, especially when it doesn't even work.  Now no contact or calendar changes I make in Outlook transfer to iPhone or vice-versa (even with a manual sync).
Anyone know what the h*ll is going on with this?  To say I'm annoyed would be an understatement.  May be time to ditch Apple and the iPhone, first no YouTube & Google Maps now they insist on not allowing me to sync the way I want.  Total BS.

I have this same problem too - thanks for the heads up that all my NOTES will get wiped.  Going to have to workaround by dumping all my notes from Outlook to ONENOTE on the cloud.  Then not really using NOTES on my iPhone and iPad.  Apple is slowly becoming more and more successful in getting me to NOT use MS products, like Outlook.  Actually, my cloud strategy will be to keep my longer notes on ONENOTE and relegating NOTES on iPhone/iPad to just quick hits that I jot here and there.  I guess iPhone/iPad notes will then get synced over iCloud but will not end up in Outlook.  What a pain in the arse!  I need a seriously freaking flow chart to keep track of all of my cloud activity.  It's making my head spin.

  • Bookmarks syncing issue - 'over-the-air from MobileMe'

    Hi,
Just bought a new iMac running Mountain Lion so I've now got iCloud capability back. My Safari bookmarks on my iPhone 4 are a mess and I can't delete them or get them to sync properly with the iMac Safari bookmarks.
When I connect my iPhone and look in iTunes>Devices>Info>Other, it says that 'bookmarks are being synced with your iPhone over the air  from MobileMe. Over-the-air sync settings can be changed from your iPhone'. There's no option to change this default and I can't find anything on the iPhone that lets me change over-the-air sync settings. I used to have a MobileMe account but thought that was all dead and buried now.
What do I need to do to make sure the bookmarks are synced from the iMac and the current ones on the iPhone are deleted?
    Thanks,
    Pete

Before doing a whole restore, try adding the account again without the on air syncing turned on, then sync. It may not authenticate if you have cancelled the account but if you continue to tap "Save" it will accept it with a message stating that it may not be able to connect to the server.
After, then sync so that iTunes gets the updated settings.
Nice, thanks, that did the trick.
I had to tap "save" twice (first time, then the alert pops up, dismiss the alert and hit "save" again) and accept to add the account although it could not authenticate. Then I synced and afterwards deleted the account again *on the iPhone*. Syncing again and iTunes now lets me sync contacts and calendars again.
    Thank you!

  • Contacts and Caendar won't sync - how to turn off "over the air" syncing?

I have an 2nd gen 8GB Touch, a Macbook and use iTunes 8.0.1. I do not have Wi-Fi at home. I also have a dot-Mac (or Mobile Me, I guess) account.
When I first got the Touch, I opted in the iTunes Info section to sync both calendar and contacts, and everything came over fine. However, all of that somehow disappeared, and no amount of re-syncing will help. Now, my Info tab indicates that my contacts and calendars are being synced with my iPod over the air - I do not have the option of checking any boxes there. I have tried every permutation of settings in the iPod, but this doesn't change anything. I also cannot find any helpful help screens anywhere (including on this forum, where I have already searched).
Could someone please advise me how I can regain the checkboxes so my contacts and calendar information syncs when I connect to the Macbook and use iTunes to sync everything else (photos, music and movies all work fine).
    TIA
    BobF

This sounds like a MobileMe problem; or, rather, the solution will be found there. Try this page:

  • Transfering over the air sync with an iPhone to a new computer

I am in the process of switching over to a new PC running Windows Vista. Having installed outlook and itunes on this new PC, my iphone continues to sync Calendar and Contacts over-the-air successfully with my old PC but I can't get it to sync with my new PC. iTunes on the new PC informs me that calendar and contacts will sync over the air, but it doesn't work out on this new PC.
I have tried reinstalling itunes, but the sync still does not work.
Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong with the set up on the new PC?

I'm guessing your MM sync is not set up properly for your new machine check the links
