Sync with my desktop, but still connect to my notebook for Charge/Tether?

I Sync my iPhone 4s with my desktop computer.  Can I still connect it to my Notebook with iTunes on it, and NOT have it sync?  The only reason I want to connect it is to use my Verizon Personal Hotspot tethered, and for charging.
I don't want to connect it and screw up everything that is workinig good now, but I need to travel this weekend, and want to charge and tether.
Is it as simple as just not opening iTunes on the notebook?

To be clearer. I get a message saying that the machine is not authorised (although I know it is) then I choose authorise and type in the correct apple ID etc and then get a message saying that the computer is already authorised. When I click OK on that I start all over again!

    I ask for help please

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
    Thanks again!

  • , I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive. Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing, Can't play music .. how to restore back to original state .

I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive.Cant play any music as it "can't find" the library  Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing.   How to restore back to original state . I have tried re-installing  - with no change

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Centro will not sync with Palm desktop - Calendar and/or Contacts

I have used a Palm device for many years. Acquired a new Centro. Upon installation of Palm Desktop (on Windows XP) that came with Centro, all contacts, calendar, to do, memos, etc transferred to the Centro during installation.
Subsequent changes to contacts and/or calendar on Centro are not syncing with Palm desktop when Hot Sync is performed. Hot Sync starts and appears to complete normally. To Do list and memos appear to sync just fine. Have tried changing conduits to have Centro overwrite desktop. Have uninstalled/reinstalled Desktop many times.

I have a Centro/Verizon Wireless using Versamail with accounts established for personal POP and Exchange e-mail synchronization.  The latter account is for work.  Previously I owned a Treo 650p using Versamail.
When I first installed Palm OS Desktop and synched to my Centro device, it was on a Windows XP home computer, and no Versamail accounts were defined.  First I downloaded and installed the Versamail version which allowed Exchange synchronization.  I exported the Treo650p contacts list to a disk file, and imported it onto the Windows XP home computer into the Palm OS Desktop installed with the Centro-supplied CD.  This synched the imported contacts list to the Centro fine.  After I defined all the POP and Exchange accounts, synchronization with the office Exchange contacts list worked fine, and still does.  Synchronization with the windows XP home computer for contacts seems to still be ok, too regardless of the MS Exchange Versamail account commingling with my personal POP accounts.  Maybe the install sequence is overriding the previous posts' notation that MS Exchange mail definition will override synch with Palm OS Desktop?
The problem now is I have a different/second home computer that's Vista os.  I installed the Palm OS Desktop and synch with the Treo.  The contacts list is not synching to this second home computer, maybe because I didn't follow the exact same sequence as for the Windows XP pc?  I can still synch my Centro with my Windows XP pc and that includes contacts.
Is there a way on this second pc to override the MS Exchange contacts override for synchronization without having to go through the exact same install sequence as occurred on the Windows XP machine?

  • I have two homes and I would like to keep my iPad2 in sync with my desktops in each home. How do I do that?

I have two homes in two different staes and I spend time between the two. I would like to keep my iPad2 in sync with my desktops (PCs) in each of the homes as I travel between the two. When I try to sync with the second PC ( with my iTunes ID) it threatens to wipe out my iPad2. I just want to keep the two desktops and my iPad in sync. Please help.

Put a copy of the most current iTunes Media library onto a USB hard drive. Replace the older library with the newer one. Repeat the process when you return to the other home.
Or you can sync everything to iCloud where it is accessible anywhere you can connect via your Apple ID.

I recommend reaching out to Citrix via their support system -

The receiver app has a specific list of servers it's compatible with, if the server is not on the list the app won't work in OS X.

  • WIM Chat Slow but still connected

    Hi Everyone,
During the chat session Agent usually see the alert on the close “Slow but still connected” as per the document it’s a connection speed issue between Customer and the Web Server (Please correct me if I am wrong)
If this is the then can anybody advise what is the minimum bandwidth requirement for this link or is there any workaround for this. I know this check can be disabled but is there anything else we can do about this.
    Thanks,
    Atif

Bandwidth for agent is at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/cisco_interaction_manager/cim_432/reference/guide/cim441bom.pdf.pdf
    page 8
work with tac, slow connections can be analyzed through logs and we can tweak the polling intervals. Also if connection of customer is slow there is nothing you can do to speeden up chat but you can tweak the length of polling to allow these chats without it being disconnected. Web server can also be optimized by following best practices

  • Syncing with new computer, but want to same info

I am currently using an iPhone 4. I was originally syncing with our iMAC, but last week, I purchased a MacBook Pro. This is now going to be my primary computer and I'd like to use this to sync my iPhone, too.
I am planning on transferring photos and contact info to my new computer.
How do I go about syncing my phone to my new laptop without losing data?
Is there anything special I need to do?

Where is this 'Migration Assistant'? Do I need to hook up the computers?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3322
What about contacts? Do I just transfer everything over or will my iPhone do that automatically when I sync for the first time?
If you use the Migration Assistant, the contacts in the Address Book on your iMac will be available in the Address Book on your MBP. If not, before syncing contacts with the Address Book on your MBP, enter one contact in the Address Book on your MBP. The same applies with a calendar event with iCal on your MBP. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.
Is it okay to transfer everything using an external hard drive? I don't have a firewire.
Yes. If your iMac does not have a firewire port which seems odd (your MBP does), you can do this with the computers connected via Ethernet, or with both computers connected to the same wireless network.
Or you can use the external drive to transfer your iTunes named folder from your Music folder on your iMac to the Music folder on your MBP as long as the external drive has enough storage capacity to store the folder.

I purchased a used 2008 iMac. And although the previous owner said he deleted all of his information, his iCloud account is still the primary. I don't have a clue about what to do about it. I signed him out and logged in with my info, but still no go. Is there any way to eliminate his iCloud account and make mine the primary without rebooting it back to factory settings? There was an update, I believe, that I couldn't install because i didn't have his password that is what made me aware that his acct. was still active. I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.
