Sync with my new MBP *without* losing anything and without copying itunes

Hi.
Here is what I had:
iMac. iTunes library with over 10,000 songs. My iphone was synced to it.
Now, what I have:
A new macbook pro. With iTunes. Because this is a laptop I don't want to fill it up with 10,000 songs, so I do not want to copy the whole itunes from my old imac. All I want it to sync the iphone with this one.
Any thoughts? Why is it so hard for apple to allow me to sync two itunes and keep them all synced? What law will I break?
Anyway, would appreciate some suggestions on how to make sure that my iphone copies all the current apps and settings to my MBP and then syncs with it.
Thanks!

as long as you make sure your iTunes is authorized for both Apple ID's, yes.

Sorry, but this does not seem to be an iPad question. I'd therefore suggest you ask in the iTunes for Mac forum.

  • Having trouble syncing with my new iPhone cable, keeps crashing and saying that the device cannot be found

The iTunes sync keeps crashing and saying that the device cannot be found. I have bought a new cable recently off eBay and it manages to charge my iPhone when I plug it into my macbook but its not allowing me to sync or import pictures.

  • What do I do if I have an older mac working great and I want to sync with my newer phone via iCloud?

I am really disappointed that my older Mac will not be able to use iCloud to sync with my newer phone.  Has anything been done to remedy this problem.  You make a great product that lasts, but it appears people are being forced to upgrade when nothing is wrong with their computers. Why support other brands but not your own.  I want to continue to buy Apple products, but not if I am forced to upgrade before I need or can afford too.

I'm afraid that five years is a long time in computer history; and while an older machine will continue to work as well as it ever did you often can't take advantage of more recent developments in technology.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mountain Lion, provided it meets the requirements.
If you are running Leopard on an Intel Mac you will have to upgrade to Snow Leopard to access the Mac App Store - it's available in the online Apple Store. However if you have a PPC Mac you cannot run Snow Leopard and cannot proceed further.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
The requirements for Mountain Lion are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
    and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • I am getting a new computer: what do I need to backup onto an external hard drive so that I will be able to sync the ipad with the new computer without losing anything?

I am getting a new computer and need to be sure to back things up from the old computer in order to put everything onto the new computer.  I know that itunes music I have uploaded from cd's will not sync from ipad to new computer, but what else should I be aware I will lose when I move to sync with the new computer?

IMHO the best solution is to clone your disk. That will give you a copy of everything. You can do that with either SuperDuper or CCC.

  • How do I sync with a new computer without losing everything?

I no longer have access to the computer I originally synced my iPhone with.  I want to sync it with a new computer and back everything up without losing anything.  How do I do that?  Please help!

Using the information below you can transfer content to your new computer.  Thiis will at least update the content to have what is on your phone but you will still be syncing with a new iTunes library.  It will replace your content but hopefully you can make the replaced content match your existing content.
Make a backup of your computer always.  This is the digital age and it is all too easy to lose music and photos in an instant.
Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

The problem is that all services are bundled with your Apple ID ([email protected]):
Your iCloud account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Backups, etc.),
also iTunes & App Store purchases (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.),
    and the iTunes Match services.
(I guess that all your devices - yours and your wife's are connected to one iTunes library, right?)
If you want that your wife gets her own iCloud account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc. but gets also access to your media then you have two set up two things on her device:
iCloud (Settings > iCloud) with her account (e.g. [email protected])
    and
iTunes & App Stores (Settings > iTunes & App Stores) with your account (e.g. [email protected]).
In this case she gets access to your library and could use the same iTunes Match account.

You can transfer iTunes purchases by:

Most other stuff by the third-party programs discussed here:

However, your app data such as saved games will be lost unless you have a backup file from your old computer.

  • New laptop imap but iphone currently pop. Can I change without losing anything?

    Good Afternoon.
Apologies if this has been asked I have tried to search but didnt quite understand some of the answers.
My partner currently has his iphone set up using pop.
Yesterday we set his new laptop up and I set email up using imap.
I am not sure if there is going to be any conflict.
We simply want to be able to use either phone or latop and the other to respond to what he has done if that makes sense. If he puts an  email in a folder on his phone we want the same to happen on his laptop. If he deletes an email we want it to disappear from the other  device. In other words we want each to act like the other.
I believe he may need his phone to be set to imap for this.
How do I change it to imap as i am worried if I delete account before setting up an imap account on his phone he may lose all the emails currently on his phone.
Can you change from pop to imap without losing anything.
Thank you. If your answers could be kept as simple as possible I would appreciate it as not very technical with either iphone or laptop.
Thank you and have a lovely weekend.

If the account is an IMAP account, deleting the account on the phone will not affect any emails still on the server unless you delete these emails directly on the phone. So, first delete the account on the phone, the add the account back, this time setting it up as IMAP.

  • My iphone 4 is synced with the macbook at home, but I want to copy my music from itunes on my pc at work without touching or loosing anything else than music

...but when I connect it on my pc at work on iTunes and try to check "manually sync songs and videos" I get a window asking to "erase and sync".
But it is not very clear about what is going to be erased. What will it be erased? Only music and videos? Also Apps, emails, contacts, calendar?

When you connect the iPhone to sync with the new computer,  a number of things will happen. If the new computer/iTunes does not contain any music, then yes, you will receive a prompt saying this iPhone is synced to another library, and if you continue, you will lose your music. However, you risk losing a number of other things, such as apps, contacts and calendar data. When you ask about photos, any photos that you have on the iPhone that were synced from the previous computer would also be lost. You need to save the photo folder from the old laptop and transfer that to the new desktop. You also need to sync the contacts and calendar to the same supported application that you were using in the past, such as Outlook, unless you are using an outside web-based sync, such as Google. Also, when you first connect the iPhone, it will make a backup, or at least make sure that it does before you attempt to sync, or you will not have a backup of some of the other things, such as mail settings, SMS, and the contents of the Camera Roll. I would import the photos from the camera roll to the new computer before trying to do anything else in iTunes.
