Sync without iTunes?

I just thoroughly dislike iTunes.
I quit using my iPhone because I don't want it on my PC's.
I thorougly hated the fact I can't drag and drop files of my choosing to the phone and do away with the need of a USB flash drive.
Cant I use Active Sync? Please?
iTunes is useless and lousy for my uses.

Thanks, I'll check it out.
Would I have to install Missing Sync on every PC?
It appears one way for Mac only, can't use WMP.
Looks like another early antiquated platform due to proprietary nonsense.
Thanks. I guess I'll continue with my Smartphone and place this gift in the drawer. The phone as a gift was a nice thought, but proprietary needs of the platform just didn't fit into my life.

  • Syncing without iTunes

    Hi,
    Q1:
Why does the iPad need to be activated using iTunes ? I only have a linux machine and have no intention of buying a Win or OSX machine just for activating the thing. Can it be activated without iTunes ?
    Q2:
Can you ONLY sync the iPad with iTunes or does it pop up as an other USB device of more generic type ?
    /RaceMouse

iTunes is the only tool that will "sync" with the iPad. You "could" bring your iPad to an Apple store and get it set up for you (you'd create an iTunes account and get it initialized there). You "could" just buy music and videos directly from the iPad. But if you have your own mp3 collection, you can ONLY use iTunes to transfer them to the iPad.
AND, any software updates/fixes that come along are delivered VIA iTunes, so you won't be able to enjoy those updates either.

  • How do I turn off Sync without iTunes deleting all the songs on my iPod!

Well that's basically my question. I want to keep all the songs that are already there, but from this point on just add new ones manually. When I unchecked the Sync box it wiped out my iPod. Thanks in advance for any help.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You need to turn off automatic sync before you delete all your tracks from iTunes. If you don't, then you need to prevent the iPod from synching when you connect:
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Command and Option keys on a Mac. This should stop the iPod from auto synching with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer. Then you can set iTunes to manual synchronization.
Of course, this won't help if your iPod has already had the tracks removed. But you'll know what to do next time.
    Regards.

  • Can't sync without iTunes 10

Just bought my new iPhone 4 and LOVE it. However, no one ever said (Apple or Verizon) that you will need iTunes 10 to sync. I am devastated and ticked off. My PowerBook g4 will not take the intel based ITunes 10, so I'm scr_____. The Genius Bar at the Apple store had no solution, other than perhaps getting the old Leopard OS system. But they said it would slow down my system.
Do you have any solutions? Where can I complain LOUDLY to Apple and get my voice heard? Is this an Apple ploy to force me to buy a new computer??

"no one ever said (Apple or Verizon) that you will need iTunes 10 to sync. "
From the box the iphone came in and Apples website:
    "Mac system requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.1 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access"
"Do you have any solutions? "
    You must update your OS.
"Where can I complain LOUDLY to Apple and get my voice heard?"
The requirements are clearly printed on the box. There is nothing to be done. You can leave feedback for Apple, if you feel the compulsion at: http://www.apple.com/feedbackI
"Is this an Apple ploy to force me to buy a new computer?? "
No. This is technology advancing as it it constantly does. Nothing unusual or odd at all.

  • Turning off sync without loosing music

After a year of managing my own music transfers I made the mistake of using iTunes sync to give my iPod a fresh reload to make sure all my edits to the library were up to date. Now I can’t turn off sync without iTunes threatening to erase everything on the iPod. As a temporary patch I’ve got iTunes set to only sync checked items but it’s really lame to have to trick iTunes into leaving my iPod alone. Anyone know how to turn the feature off without wiping the iPod?

#@!&%$# ... using my "sync on checked" trick wiped everything without warning. I guess I got my wish and I can go back to manually managing the iPod. I HATE iTUNES! It's deliberately crippled in so many ways ...

  • Hard drive crashed on my MacBook pro and had to replace drive and logic board.  When I connect my iPhone and try to sync I get a dialog box stating iPhone is synced with another iTunes library, erase and sync?  How do I sync with iTunes without erasing?

Hard drive crashed and had to replace drive and logic board on my MacBook pro.  After Install tried to sync with my iPhone and a dialog box pops up stating "this iPhone synced with another iTunes library, erase and sync?".  I checked the manually manage music and videos box because I don't want all my wife's pics and music on my iPhone.  How do I Sync without erasing what I have on my iPhone???

    columbus new boy wrote:
    How crap is that?
    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

    Yes, windows to Mac too.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

Will i be able to listen to music, watch videos and take pictures and sync with itunes without a sim in my locked iphone 5?

You will need a SIM to activate it. There is no way around that. The SIM does not have to be active, but it must be from the correct carrier if the phone is carrier locked. Once activated, it can be removed and used like an iPod touch, but if you ever have to restore or update iOS, you will need the SIM to re-activate it.

update : so after reading numerous posts, I tried unchecking entire playlist and just tried one of my playlists. That sync seemed to work, so I rechecked entire playlist and did the sync. It worked. Then I went in to my "walk to work" playlist and added some songs to see if it would sync now, and it did!!! so happy now. will see what happens tomorrow.

Are you running Snow Leopard or later?
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.

  • My itunes says that my ipod is synced with another library when it is not and cannot update or sync without wiping it and all its data

My itunes says that my ipod is synced with another library when it is not and cannot update or sync without wiping it and all its data
    Can anyone help me

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your iPod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
All media content will be erased during the first sync, but you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • IPad mini iTunes sync without Bluetooth??

I have a wifi-only iPad Mini on order for my wife. Her computer is an older iMac5,2 without Bluetooth. Will she be able to transfer/sync her contact data, photos and music using the iMac's USB connection? Would any additional adaptor/'camera kit' be needed for this?
    Thanks in advance.

Here are the iPad Mini Technical specs for syncing with iTunes. She has to be running iTunes 10.7 and that requires an Intel Mac. Bluetooth is of no use anyway for syncing purposes.
Apple ID (required for some features)
    Internet access6
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
    Download iTunes at www.itunes.com/download
There are some WiFi transfer apps available in the App Store that will move photos and videos to the iPad from the Mac - assuming that the Mac meets the requirements for those apps.
Without knowing more about her Mac, more than likely, she will not be able to sync with iTunes and may have problems with the WiFi transfer apps of her Mac is that old.
