Sync without MobileMe

I am trying to sync calendars on various Macs, iPods and iPads for different members of my family. Using MobileMe is no longer functional. For example, if someone sends me an appointment on one email account, I cannot move that to a different calendar without sending an update to all attendees - which is a pain. Also, I can no longer enter appointments from an older iPod Touch.
So I'm looking for a simple solution to sync iCal calendars over my wireless network without using MobileMe. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Jan-Peter

Creat a gmail account
For syncing with iCal:
open ical, click "iCal" at the top and then click "preferences"
Then navigate to the "accounts" tab
Click the "+" in the bottom left hand corner
then change the account type to "google"
then enter your gmail info
then you can add events and whatever, if you want to make sure that your calendar synced, you can click "calendar" at the top, and then click "refresh all"
Sycing on an iOS device:
open system preferences, open "mail, Contacts, Calendars"
Click "add account"
select "Microsoft Exchange"
for the email field type in your gmail email address
for the username field type in your gmail address
for the password type in your gmail password
then for the description type "GMAIL"
click next
then for the server field type "m.google.com"
leave the domain blank
click next
then you can turn on/off sycing for Mail, contacts, and or calendar.
since you only want calendar for what you are doing, slide the mail and contacts to off.
then you are good to GO!

  • How to sync iCal between iPhone and MacBookPro without MobileMe?

    Hello,
How can I sync iCal between iPhone and MacBookPro without MobileMe?
I'm still using MobileMe, but I will stop soon.
I'm using my iPhone in India a lot to create new events or to add new contacts. At the end of the day I would like to able to sync it with my MacBookPro without using MobileMe. Internet Connection is often very bad in that area. The iPhone I only use without UMTS and all that Data Transfering stuff. Best for me would be to sync directly by wire or Bluetooth if possible. If you have a solution with and without Internet Connection, that would be very helpfull to me.

On the Mac, in iTunes with iPhone attached, click on the iPhone section. Go to the "info" tab. There you will see a list of items that can be synced. Make sure that "sync addressbook contacts" is checked, along with the appropriate choices under it.
Don't know what else to say, it works fine here.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to trigger Bookmarks (Safari) syncing without the need to merge??

I found that my bookmarks were out of sync on my home Mac (although iCloud was active), after I did some sorting and cleaning on the office Mac. Since I found no other way (wait or reboot did not help), I did deactivate and then re-activate bookmarks syncing in Preferences => iCloud => Safari. This DID trigger syncing, BUT (after I was offered the option to cancel or to merge) the result was that now the sorting and cleaning work I did before was lost. In fact, it was worse because of the merge in two directions.
    So the question is:
What can one do to force syncing in a way that avoids the merge?
It is really stupid that there is no option (like with MobileMe) to select the sync direction. Or did I miss that?

OK, you are correct, but this is only due to the phrasing of my last comment and not because of the quality of iCloud syncing. MobileMe was MUCH better in this respect! It DID offer the option to overwrite the data WITHOUT the need to manually delete before.
In addition, this was not the core point.
The main point is that iCloud for (at least to me) unknown reasons did stop performing its job for the bookmarks that were synced before.
I would like to know if there is an option to trigger syncing, without the need to delete manually, and then switch of and on again.
    Again, the question is:
What can one do to force syncing in a way that avoids the merge?

Are you running Snow Leopard or later?
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.

  • Contact Groups not showing up on Iphone when syncing with Mobileme

My contacts show up in my address book on my Iphone but when I go to look at my groups the page is blank and I cannot get back to my contacts without closing and reopening contacts but still no groups. I want my groups to show up. I have at least 4 groups that show up on my me, and syncs fine with ipad....
I THINK THIS IS A ISSUE with the new verizon iphone.
    Please help if anyone has

I am having a similar issue. As is my wife. I also believe that it is a bug in the current iOS on the CDMA iPhone 4.
It is just as you described, and I have to close Contacts completely in order to restore my access to the contacts list. And, like you, our groups show up just fine on our iPads (within minutes of making changes, as we sync over MobileMe).
It doesn't appear to be a letter-case issue, as at least my login is in all lowercase letters.
I sure hope that this is fixed in an iOS update soon! It's rather problematic for those of use who use their iPhones for business purposes.

  • Deleting iPhone contacts & syncing with MobileMe

I had been syncing iphone contacts to a mobileme account and then wanted to instead sync them to another mobileme account (the main account in a family).  This is a problem since you cannot delete all the contacts on the iPhone (I had 2000 of them.) and iPhone syncing with mobileme does not allow you to replace contacts on the iPhone with what is on mobileme.  (iPhone allows only a merge which would duplicate contacts and add many I no longer wanted.)  After considering the "solution" offered by a "Genuis" which was to reset the iPhone and start over which is a painful process to reorganize the apps and login all apps that require it, etc.  Instead I developed the following procedure that worked great (This was with Mac OS 10.6.8 and IOS 4.3.5):
    1) Sync address book on Mac to make sure mobileme is up to date.
    2) Backup all the address book to an address book archive and/or select all contacts and save in a vcard file (File -> Export)
    3) Uncheck sync of contacts in MobileMe (Apple -> System Preferences -> MobileMe -> Sync tab)
    4) Select all contacts in Address Book and hit delete (Edit -> Select All, then hit delete)
    5) Select all groups in Address Book and delete (select first group, hold shift and click last group, then hit delete)
    6) Connect iPhone and sync.  Go to info tab in iTunes and select Sync Address Book Contacts, then Under Advanced, check Replace Information on this iPhone - Contacts.  This will transfer contacts (none) from Mac to iPhone which will delete all existing iPhone contacts.  Click apply and then sync.
    7) After sync, disconnect iPhone and verify there are no contacts on iPhone.
    8) On iPhone, go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Accounts -> MobileMe (login if you haven't done so), turn on Contacts (to sync with mobileme)
    9) In a few minutes, the contacts on the iPhone (none) will be merged with the desired contacts in MobileMe and the contacts in MobileMe should show up in the iPhone Address book - This completes the iPhone.
    10) On the Mac, go to Apple->System Preferences->Mobile Me->Sync tab and recheck Contacts.  Click Advanced, Reset Sync Data, select only Contacts and transfer contacts from MobileMe cloud to the Mac, and click Replace.
    11) In a few minutes, all contacts and groups from MobileMe should show up in the Mac Address book and you are done.

    Yes I did select merge.
Did it 2 times without anything happening on iPhone or MobileMe.
Third time it deleted my contacts on the iPhone.
Is there no option to tell it which direction to do the merge/sync?

  • Synching without MobileMe

    Hi,
Without MobileMe, is the only way to sync my iPhone with my Mac is via cable? ... In other words, is it not possible to sync via Wi-Fi home network?
    Thank you in advance!
PS. I have iPhone 3gs running iOS 4.2

Cable is it for direct sync. An alternative is to sync Google Calendar/contacts with your Mac and your iPhone with Google.

  • Added calendar in iCal not synced to MobileMe

I moved a calendar from "On My Mac" to my MobileMe account group, using the export-import method. The new calendar, however, does not sync to MobileMe. I even tried an overwrite (bookmarks, calendars, contacts and keychains) from my Mac to MobileMe but the added calendar still did not appear in MobileMe.
I quit and relaunched iCal, which started an immediate sync. The new calendar promptly disappeared from iCal and I got a string of error messages (one for each entry in the new calendar, it seems) all ending with
    The server responded with
    “HTTP/1.1 409 Conflict”
and asking me to either "Go Offline" or "Revert to Server". It didn't seem to matter which one I selected – the error just kept cropping up. Eventually, I gave up and force quit iCal.
How can I add a new calendar to iCal that will sync with MobileMe?

    Derek,
I presume that this procedure represents exactly what you have tried to accomplish?
Import an iCal calendar or event
If you use iCal and want to add your iCal calendars and events to a MobileMe calendar, you can import them.
    Hide
    To import an iCal calendar:
Open iCal, and then select the iCal calendar you want to import into your MobileMe calendar.
Choose File > Export > Export.
Type a calendar name, choose a location from the Where pop-up menu, and click OK.You can store the exported file anywhere, and you can delete it after you finish importing it.
Choose File > New Calendar, and then choose a MobileMe calendar (by default, your MobileMe email address).
Type a calendar name (you can use the same name as the calendar you just exported), and press Return.
Choose File > Import > Import, select your exported iCal calendar, and then click Import.
Select the destination MobileMe calendar to which you want to add the imported iCal calendar, and then click OK.
Quit iCal and go to the Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder and delete any/all files with "Cache" as a part of the name. Log out/in or restart and reattempt using the exact procedure which I copied from the MobileMe Help page.

  • Problem when syncing with MobileMe

I am using iPhone 3G, software 2.1. I use GMail for email (no problems) but my contacts, and only my contacts, sync through MobileMe.
The problem is that with MobileMe active, my Contact list, "Mail, Contacts and Calendars" settings and several other minor features simply do not work - they open, pause for a few seconds, then crash. The Mail application also hangs and crashes every other time I open it.
My local Apple Store restored 2.1, after which my Contact list and Email worked perfectly until I re-activated my MobileMe syncing, after which the problems resumed.
As the problems occurred only after MobileMe syncing is turned on, I assume this is the cause of the problem, but because "Mail, Contacts..." settings crashes every time I open it I cannot disable MobileMe syncing.
Any suggestions please? All help gratefully received...

This was resolved by completely removing the MobileMe account from the iPhone, rebooting it and adding the account again.

Hi at the moment my ipod is on manual sync mode. Is there any way of changing this to auto-sync without losing the music on my ipod or library? Possibly more importantly is there a way I can transfer the ratings from my ipod onto my i-tunes?
This is so I can delete music from my ipod knowing its rated on my i-tunes so I can then see later if I want to re-add it based on its rating
    Thanks

    Unfortunately there is not.

  • Missing a calendar in iCal after syncing with MobileMe....

i am having some problems with iCal ...i am missing one my Calendars in iCal and wasn't sure how to get it back. I downloaded the calendars file and calendar.plist from my Time Machine backup...the missing calendar showed up at first, but it seemed to disappear right away (i assume after syncing with MobileMe.) Not sure what would be the easiest way to bring it back.......

It's possible to restore from Time Machine, though it's a slightly complicated process. Please follow very carefully the steps described here:

  • New Macbook iCal will not sync to MobileMe

I bought a new macbook air and when i turn on syncing, my mobileme account will not sync the calendar saying mobile me needs to be fixed...the dialog box says:

Sounds like exactly the same problem I have. Have Black MacBook and iPhone 3Gs synced to MobileMe and everything works. I set up a White MacBook (both MacBooks are 10.5.8) with new HD, formatted, new install of Leopard, new application installs, ran software update until all are current, then ran Repair Permissions.
Then turned on MobileMe sync. Safari bookmarks, Mail, Contacts, etc all sync fine and near real time for changes. iCal on computer is completely blank--didn't even update the 4 named calendars. I reset iSync history and tried replacing data on computer with MobileMe content. Nothing. Then reset iSync history again and tried merging all data. This time it said there was over 3,000 calendar events to add. Sounded good. But nothing happened.
Looks like I can create a new event in iCal and it syncs to MobileMe, then delete in MM and it updates on MacBook. But zero existing events in MM show in iCal on MacBook, even when I edit one and resave it.
Update: I sent a message to Apple at www.apple.com/feedback.

  • ICal not syncing w/ mobileme

iCal has stopped syncing with Mobileme. When I try to sync I get the error message "Calendars could not be synced due to inconsistent data. Confirm that your computer's data is valid, then reset Calendars on MobileMe in System Preferences." I have unchecked Calendars in Syst Prefs, synced, rechecked, and synced and it does not work. How can I resolve this and sync it?

I am having the same problem with iCal not syncing. I have 3 Macs (iMac, Macbook, and G5 Tower) that are all normally synced using MobileMe and 2 iPhones that sync as well, but the computers just stopped syncing the other day. It seems to be an Apple problem but I don't know how to remedy it. I've tried what has worked for some other folks here where you changed the sync to the computer from the mobile me in sys prefs but once the main computer that holds the calendar has a change it messes up the others again. It's becoming very frustrating and I can't seem to get to the proper link on the support pages to get an Apple tech to help. I noticed on the Mobile Me page it says that they did an update the other day that could affect peoples syncing but it says it's now resolved. Not for me, anyone has any thoughts I'd sure appreciate it.

  • When I receive appointments by email and accept them they go into the enourage "on my mac" ical calendar which is not synced with mobileme.  How do I change where appointments are put ?

When I receive appointments by email and accept them they go into the enourage "on my mac" ical calendar which is not synced with mobileme.  How do I change where appointments are put ?
Or how can I choose where the appointment is put ?
I use the mobileme sync services so the ical calendars that are synced are those in the "[email protected]" group.
    Please help !
    Nick

Actually you can't drag the appointment to ano calendar - its says "You can’t make changes to this invitation., Only the organiser can change this event"
Also if you double click on the received appointment and open the window the only calendars shown that you can select are the 'on my mac" ones, and not the sync'd ones.
    Any ideas welcome !!

  • Ical not syncing to mobileme after upgrade

upgraded to new mobileme calendar. i cannot get my calendar to show up in mobileme. i have already tried resetting and syncing from my computer to mobileme. stuff on my computer calendar still does not show up. it will sync from mobileme to the computer. so do i just do all my calendar stuff on mobileme from now on?

I've put everything over to my MobileMe account in iCal, restarted my computer, made sure my account info is correct in iCal for MM, and it's syncing, but it's SO SLOW I've been at this all day and it's synced maybe 1.5 calendars. They aren't big at all. The biggest calendar I have is about 150 events and it's a baseball schedule. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? It doesn't seem like it should take this long!
