Synching a Large iTunes Library...and a Streaming Question....

My iTunes library has grown to about 220GB. My ATV is the 160GB model and I also have about 20GB of photos I wish to synch.
First Question:
How do I "selectively" synch music onto the ATV given I have more GB worth of data than the ATV capacity? Do I need to remove some sub folders from the iTunes directory? I would like to keep the reference data in the iTunes browser and not remove it.
Second question:
I tried streaming over the weekend by reconnnecting iTunes to my PC, and the the "loading library" messge was displayed for well over 8 hours without my being able to access any photos or music. I guessed that this was because of the size of the library. Is this typical?
I am connected via Linksys Powerline, hard wired ethernet over my AC lines. Synching works well this way, but I am wondering if streaming does not do so well over this type of connection.
Any assistance is appreciated.

You can choose which playlists get synced to the tv, use playlists to collect all the tunes you want synced.

At 8 hours it won't be anything to do with the size of the library.
The size of a library can make a difference to the time it takes a library to load but only in terms of maybe taking a minute or longer instead of 15 seconds or so. Actually it's the size of the library database file that counts here and not the size of all the content. For example my content occupies
1.7 TB but my database is around 22 MB, I have around 10,000 tunes and 1,000 videos of one kind or another, but if your 220 GB of content is all music you may have 40,000 tunes and a database of around 80 MB.

If I'm not mistaken AC uses one of these and I don't think he has mentioned any problems with.

    Hi Lisa,
I know from experience that this must be a frustrating situation for you especially if you don't want to loose the music/video content that is currently on your ipod. Unfortunately though you may have to consider re-syncing it as it thinks its currently synced with another computer.
If you bought any music that is on the ipod through itunes you can opt to right click the ipod in itunes and 'transfer purchases' if you authorise your library in the 'Store' menu in itunes. Some reasons for this happening may include some of the following:
Deleting and reinstalling your itunes on the computer.
Removing the account you had on the computer you used itunes in and making a new one. (User account, eg: Lisa).
    Changing computers in the past.
A friend or family member syncing it on their computer to give you there music.
A sign of a failing iPod.
Alternatively you can opt to not sync it and keep the music that is on your ipod there but this means you will never be able to update your ipod.
    Hope this helps!

  • I have an older ipod with a large itunes library and a new ipa 2. the both have the same email but different passwords. Can i sink th old ipod's library ith the new ipad's library?

I have an older ipod with a large itunes library. I have a new ipad2. Both have the same email address but different passwords. Can I merge both itunes libraries?

    Not sure if this helps:-
The music files, were they bought from your iTunes account or did someone gift them to you after buying from the iTunes account? If they are yours you can download them again if you clear or de-authorise the ipod, it has to be done by whoever gave you the ipod to do this (the registered  owner). If they were bought for you on another itunes account I don't think Apple let you use them as they are copyrighted and they don't belong to you, they belong to the person who bought them. If the music files where ripped from music cd's then click and drag them to a new folder on your desktop and have the person who gave you the ipod to de-authorise and unregister it. Then you re register it and put your files back from your desktop folder in your iTunes folder and synch. Hopefully that would work.  Any files which you did not buy, I would not know how get around this, best bet is to take it to you nearest Apple  Store and explain that they were gifted to you and ask how you can use them.  The best way to gift music files is to buy the gift tokens and give these. Hope above helps.

  • Large iTunes Library and iTunes Match

I have over 300 GBs of music in my iTunes library.  It is accessed from an external hard drive.  I would like to use iTunes Match, but hear it only allows 25,000 songs.  Any hope of them expanding this?  How do they determine the 25,000 that are used?

    CP10934 wrote:
I find it interesting that the Apple allows you be purchase music fro them but after you reach the 25,000 tune limit which supposedly, Apple does not admit to this, is due to an agreement between Apple and the music industry.
Apple clearly states that there is a limit of 25K and that itunes store purchases do not count towards this limit.
My itunes library is substantially over 25K but only 24,980 tracks are uploaded or matched. I have a large number of tracks that have an Icloud Status of "Removed"
I achieved this by creating a second blank library - I signed into match and was able to view all tracks in iTunes Match.
I then deleted some tracks from this library - effectively deleting tracks in the cloud.
When I went back into my original library, those tracks were shown as "removed". iTunes Match will now ignore those tracks. You can now add new tracks provided you kept matched and uploaded less than 25k.
If you keep your total below 25k you should be able to contue using Itunes Radio ad free.\

  • TS1702 My IPod Nano is synched to my ITunes library, but when I click on the Device name, all of the music is "grayed out" and I can't click on anything.

My IPod Nano is synched to my ITunes library and shows up under Devices, but when I click on the Device name, all of the music is "grayed out" and I can't click on anything.

In order for this content to not appear grayed out, you need to enable the Manually manage music option from under the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes.  Keep in minding that manually managing your iPod's contents is different from having content automatically sync to your device from iTunes.  See here for more information.

  • IPad synched with another itunes library

Recently my pc's hard drive died - I've installed a new hard drive but having problems with itunes and the ipad I have.
When I try to connect the two a message comes up stating that my ipad is synched with another itunes library and the options i have are to erase & sync replacing the ipads content with the library's content or transfer itunes store purchases over - my problem is that there are music files on the ipad that i will ose if i follow this way. Is there any way I can copy these files?
    Any help/pointers is much appreicated.

    Noboers-
One possibility is that you have more than one account on your computer, and previously synced with a different user account.  You might log into each account and try again.  If that is the reason, one should work.
We can guess at other scenarios that might cause the problem, but the solution may be to go ahead and choose Restore instead of syncing the iPad.  You would lose any changes since the last time you synced.

  • Large iTunes Library Streaming Issues

I left sync on and it filled up the 40GB drive with about 7,000 of my songs.
I then went to the sources in Apple TV and selected my iTunes library for streaming. The screen displays:
Loading "iTunes Library" and the spinning icon shows for about five minutes. My screen then goes blank, and the AppleTV resets itself. When it comes back on it asks me for my language choice, and then asks if I want to recover my AppleTV, continue, or reset to Factory settings.
I have tried this a few times with the same results each time. Any help is very much appreciated.
Hardware - Apple TV, Mac Mini, 500gb external drive with music and movies
Network - Linksys cable modem and switch with a wired connection to the Apple TV.

Well the journey continues. I "factory reset" my Apple TV last night after another unsuccessful attempt to stream my music through Apple TV. It can see my iTunes Library under "sources." It says that it is loading and then after six minutes or so (I timed it) it restarts the box and presents me to select my language preference as it did when I initially installed the AppleTV. Once I do this it gives me three choices. I can "Restart" or "Restore Factory Defaults" or "Recover". If you chose "Restart" the machine reboots again. If I try and stream again, six minutes later I am asked what Language I want. If I try recover, it tests the system and says everything is good. I decided to perform a Factory Reset, and this did not work either.
I have a large iTunes Music Library, and have been using it successfully streaming through Elgato's EyeHome product for a couple years. We have had issues with new software updates, but they were very quick to provide solutions.
HERE IS WHERE I AM CURRENTLY AT:
I went to my computer, turned off iTunes, went to my iTunes folder and copied all of the files from the iTunes directory (remember my music is on an external drive) to a folder in another location. I was surpried to see my iTunes.xml file was over 150mb in size. I then restarted iTunes and of course had no music in it. I am now importing my file library in again to see if it helps. Maybe I has a corrupt iTunes file.
Anybody else with any ideas? Apple?

  • HT204088 How how can I synch my ipod + iphone music to my new computer? I get the same error  "my ipod or iphone is synched with another itunes library. An Ipod can be synched with only one itunes library at a time. What would I like to do Erase and Synch

How can I synch my ipod & iphone music (purchased from itunes on my old laptop) to my new laptop? I keep getting the same message on my itunes on my new laptop: " The ipod/Iphone is synched with another itunes library. An ipod/iphone can be synched with only one itunes library at a time. What would you like to do - Erase and Synch or Transfer Purchases?" What do I do?
    A couple of other items:
    1) I am guessing Apple does not keep a history of all my music purchases? As I did not have my entire library backed-up anywhere, and relying on the music I have on my ipod and my iphone as my only source of itunes music....I have lost over 500 songs!!!
    2) I used to have an Apple account under another account name, and since have switched to a new account name. Is there anyway to find the history of purchases from my old Apple account name and transfer these over to my new account name and onto my new laptop?
I hope someone can help, I am having a very difficult time trying to obtain answers. Angie

The iphone/ipod is NOT a storage/backup device.  Not maintaining a backup copy is a big mistake.
You can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone/ipod to your computer:
Authorize your computer for all accounts and then click  File>Transfer Purchases

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.

  • HT1329 My large iTunes library is on an external hard drive. Can I set up iTunes on my new Macbook Pro and copy the library to it or are there any pitfalls?

I have my large iTunes library on an external hard drive. Can I set up ITunes on my new Macbook Pro and transfer/copy this library to the internal hard drive or are there any problems I should be aware of?

ITs an old Iomega 100gb external HD that has about 90gb of music on it. The Macbook has a 500gb HD. I would like to put the iTunes library on the internal HD so I have room to expand.
    Phil0124 wrote:
You can copy it to the internal hard drive as long as it fits on it. How big is your library, and how big is your internal HD?
The only thing you do not want to do is over-stuff the internal hard drive. The OS needs some space to operate correctly, so if your iTunes library uses up more than say 80 to 85% of the internal HD's available space it may not be a good idea to transfer it over.
With that said, the internal HD will provide slightly faster access to the library than the external would, but other than that, you can point iTunes to the external drive just fine.

  • Apple TV slow performance with large iTunes library

We have a rather large (movies + music) iTunes library and the appleTV is performing very poorly... Are there any suggestions how to improve wake-up time, menu response time or performance overall? Will it help to put our music on a separate HDD and turn that off when we want to use the appleTV? Anything else?

Sorry to butt-in, we have a 2.6TB iTunes library. Music and Photos are kept on the AppleTV all else is streamed. We use a Lacie 4Big Quadra attached to a iMac G5 streamed via Airport Extreme.
The only delays we get are for the Lacie coming out of sleep mode (takes about 45 seconds), which sometimes results in an on-screen message of File Format not compatible (which just means "not found"). Retrying the selection starts the streaming. I expect the iTunes library streams the Movie/TV programme to the AppleTV which buffers it for delivery. This could be the delay you're experiencing, maybe 15-20 seconds before it starts to play - is this what you mean?
As our library has grown we've noticed no significant performance drop-off.
Possibly it's a network issue, have you run the network diagnostics on Apple TV ?
